What the hell, the dock is not working as Google home speaker? Thats insane, I was 100% sure it would work like that, I think this is a deal breaker for me
THIS is the kind of thing I think Apple should create for the iPad. I’ve loved the idea of using a base model iPad or iPad mini as a HomeKit hub, but dropping $400 on a fully-featured device that I will leave hooked into my wall just doesn’t jive with me. Having some sort of docking system that converts the iPad into an always on HomeKit hub with household controls and, weather/news widgets, and ever media control/entertainment stuff?? Super cool IMO!
Given the size of the dock I'm surprised they didn't just have it function as a google nest / home speaker with the assistant built in. Then you almost have 2 products that can function separately, and together.
I think apple or a third party company with MFi certification should make this for the iPad Air and Pro devices. They have the magnets and the pins on the back for charging, and maybe passthrough for data, I know the pins work for the keyboards but not sure about audio. But it would sell like crazy

if google didn't destroy their assistant for years, i would buy it too. we switched from alexa to google home because alexa just gets things wrong too often or turns on in multiple rooms at once. also, alexa couldn't do multispeaker delay adjustment. that google takes a little longer for the better answers was a little annoying at the beginning, but the better answers have made up for it. but more and more functions do not work with the assistant. At the beginning of this year, my soundbar no longer works in Multiroom audio, shopping lists now also no longer work except for the google version which has partly not even an android app but only a website. The response times are getting longer and often in the end, nothing happens at all.
Yeah I have both in my home but use google less and less and Alexa more I went the other way to us google works less and take way to long Alexa is near instant especially for home automation tasks
I have 4 Google Nest speakers in the house and despite resetting everything, reinstalling apps, reattaching devices etc, one of the speakers refuses to answer the first time. You have to say "Hey Google", wait a good 20 - 30 secs then ask again and it works. Very annoying.
I got a google Nest Audio and the voice assistant is really so dumb, I need to specifically phrase something before it understands me. If Google bring back the same enthusiasm with nexus line, I'll buy the tablet in a heart beat. I still have my Nexus 7, very reliable beast when I was in high school. I tried everything I learned from xda forum on that thing. Never disappointed me unlike the ipad mini that I tried from my sister. I hope Google would release 11" or 13" tablet with native Android+Linux/Windows Arm dual os support. Dex mode from Samsung is still not enough for me.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is probably the first time we could see Dave doing some B-roll shots showing his personal living space. And by the way, your daughter is so cute! ❤
They should have gone all in smart home with this dock. Be a standalone smart speaker, have temp, humidity and presence sensors and a matter hub. This would make them destroy competition. I honestly don't get their project decisions.
@basicallyhumanshould have produced it as an optional accessory. blame apple all you want but they don’t produce half assed products like Google, this is why Google glasses, Nexus series, Stadia etc all failed.
@@nikilragav several countries do not have centralized heating with thermostats. You have isolated AC on each room, with temp and humidity you can easily create automations per room, associate with door/window sensors to define if the AC is on/off/cold/heat.
@@Arts11234 my opinion come also from the fact that the echo dot 5 has these capabilities and costs 60usd. The Google dock is more expensive, does not justify for having magnets inside.
I would be concerned about longevity. Every month it seems like Google is cancelling or sunsetting another feature or product. I’m not comfortable enough with the companies history of long term support or privacy concerns to buy anymore of their hardware.
Hey Dave, I watched MKBHD's review of this before this and the fact that you threw in the dad angle on this review took it over the top for me. While this isn't a product I'd consider since I'm in the Apple ecosystem, I just wanted to say that is an awesome review for regular people.
Does it have pass through charging when docked? So it stops charging the battery when it's 90% and just powers the tablet and bypasses the battery? Like some Asus phones have. Thanks
That dock magnet problem is the same problem I face with my MagSafe mount for my iPhone. It requires some finesse. I have to sort of twist it off like an Oreo
It's... a dock. The initial enthusiasm had me waiting for it to be more than the dock I had for my Nexus 7 tablet back in 2012, but it never came. It's cool I guess, but 'Amazing' seems to be over-egging it a bit, doesn't it?
Dave you nailed the comentary on profiles. Like us that have kids @apple WE need profiles on tablets. My kids always want to use my tablet, so what I had to do was give them mine and delete all apps I didn't want them to have access to. And I got a new ipad for myself.
They missed the mark on the magnets. The reason why the Magic Keyboard feels so effortless is due to the multitude of magnets that “guide” you to the right placement. I think if Google had made the dock a bit bigger to afford more space for guided magnets, it would’ve worked much better.
The dock doesn't look that large, though. I expect if they had added more magnets it would have required two hands to pull the tablet off the dock. The iPad keyboards are effectively semi-permanent while this is designed to be removed regularly and easily. If they make a larger dock eventually maybe they can add more magnets, though.
I really wanted this to be essentially a Hub Max that I could take on the go when needed, but it isn't that, so I'm not keeping it. You can’t add it to Chromecast speaker groups in Google Home, you don’t have the option to set a different speaker to play audio you call up through the Pixel Tablet the way you can with Nest displays and speakers, it doesn’t support Continued Conversation, and you can't use the camera as an additional monitoring cam like with the Hub Max. And I don't have any faith that google will ever add any of these features. If none of those things matter to you and you just want an Android tablet you can dock, then you'd probably be happy with this. Otherwise it's not worth the price.
It's good that you bring up the profile aspect of these devices. I'm still baffled that is 2023 and Apple doesn't have it, and Android has it but is really primitive. The way it should be, these things should log you into your profile by using fingerprint or face recognition. The swappy thingy at the top is only good for adults, children yes they can learn these things but can you imagine if "it just worked"
As a fellow dad, I can also relate to going from semi-professional looking to someone who just hasn't been able to escape long enough to get a haircut ;) Excellent review!
@@Dave2D just to fix any issues current version has , take feedback from users and make a better product in next iteration, like said in video ,fitting in charging dock is little finicky , no bluetooth connectivity to charging dock etc , hopefully these get fixed in next iteration
also its not like apple is releasing this product , the google track record of releasing hardware is not very good , either first version is filled with issues or they drop support for it if it doesn’t sell well , like google stadia , so right now careful of first version , hopefully second version would be really good
I work at Best Buy and have had hands on with the Pixel tablet as well…I have no clue what Dave is talking about with the stand magnets. It’s extremely simple and easy to place on the stand and take off without issue. I don’t even know where he got that from lol
Dear Dave, great video! It was not so clear to the viewer if the hub is included or not. I think this would be an interesting piece of information to someone watching a video about this new device. Cheers
When this was initially announced, I was interested. But then the price was also announced, this device was no longer under consideration. I would probably use this as a Nest Hub 75%, and as a tablet 25% of the time. So I wish they make something like this at a lower price point, and closer to the size of the Nest Hub / Nexus 7. With the Nest Hub MSRP of $100, but regularly goes on sale for half that, and Nexus 7 original MSRP of $200, I would want a "Google Pixel Tablet Mini" to be around $200-$250 price point, rather than this giant at $500.
@@genexis_ usually I can defend Apple in some sort of way or try to have an open mind but allot of simple things are just lazy or odd like no iPad calculator app!
Apple's marketing is as an iPad, the individual (i). So your device is for you. That was the initial take. Times have changed, and maybe Apple should relax that proposition. Though for many of us, even kids, I suspect if you ask them if would they like their own personal iPad or share the family one, they would say the former? So I get what Apple is doing. Of course, not everyone can afford these devices and the Pixel Tablet at £599 is expensive. I would buy two iPad 9s and let my son have that for his personal use.
I have. I like it. To remove from the docking "brick": try lifting from the bottom of the tablet. An oddity: it constantly rotates the most recent apps used onto the bottom of the screen for when you slide your finger up.
if the dock provide some sort of hub for extra storage, usb A for mouse and keyboard, and RJ45 for wired LAN, it could be a win for productivity and replacing desktop/laptop
That is great design ! I haven't seen many innovations in the tablet area in the last years. Thanks for showing it to us, otherwise I would have missed it completely.
Dang. They missed the chance to make the dock a Bluetooth speaker.. that would have made it so much more useful. Now it's just a useless rock sitting on the counter.
These engineers and higher ups need stop having the “eh good enough” mentality when theyre competing with the ipad and samsung. Make it great or let it cook.
That's wishful thinking, remember Google has been in tablet game for a long time. The Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets were released back in 2012 over a decade ago, the Nexus products were the predecessors to the pixel devices and google has already released a tablet under the pixel branding the Pixel C back in 2017.
Granted the Nexus devices where design mostly by other companies with input from google and manufactured by them not google, but they had the google name and stock android 100% google software. The pixel C however was design, hardware and software in house by google. The Pixel C received positive reviews for the Hardware and the OS but most reviews were critical of the lack of apps even from big companies that were designed with a tablet UI in mind. When it came out many hoped that it would push companies to develop dedicated android tablet apps or at least apps that have built in UI interface for tablets either with 2 seperate UIs for phones and tablets or a UI design that works well for both which is harder and necessitates compromises. But because so many android apps didn't and still don't support tablet form factory well it didn't sell well and the number of android tablets remains tiny versus number of android phones. So for most companies it's not economical or worth the money to develop another app or redesign their app for/with both Tablet UI and Phone UI form factors. Their would need to be mass adoption of this device grade school classroom use could help but them it would compete with chromebooks. Hard to compete with ipads when you can get a new 9th gen for less than $300 and even with it not have Apple's newest SOC is still faster than basically every android tablet. not to mention the way better app support for ipads Edit: Also I'm not an apple person, haven't owned an apple product since the Iphone 4 but, I also don't like tablets and prefer my XPS 13 laptop for bigger screen work supplementing my Note 20 Ultra.

Majority of this video he spent talking about charging and that alone seems to have impressed him despite everything else being mediocre at best. I like the concept of the pixel tablet and I think it's kind of the start for competitive android tablets. But personally no stylus (and if there is one to come, there won't be a charging position on the tablet like the iPad Air and Pro have) and no keyboard cover is a deal breaker. I would love to have a android tablet since I am a android user, but I will stick to my iPad. Moreover we have to wait what developers do with apps. Other than that, a great first entrance from google into the tablet game.

It’s gonna be so successful that it will make about 0.0000000000001% of the entire tablet market 😂
Even better than the regular iPad
@@eugenn2848 Its price competes with the iPad Air tbh.
@@HoodHussler That's a bit of exaggeration
@@clickbaitpro nope because it’s either that or they just terminate the whole thing
The video of your kid attempting to magnetically charge the tablet was so sweet!
"It is Google, so there could be tons of mics in here.. " lol :D
Bro!!
okay how do you do it dave. i havent seen your content in about a year or year and a half and you look younger and happier im glad.
Dex mode from Samsung is still not enough for me.
there is stuff like debiannoroot or termux but that doesnt have gpu acelleration
Connected to the dock makes it an actual contender for me. Charged and ready to go 🙌
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is probably the first time we could see Dave doing some B-roll shots showing his personal living space. And by the way, your daughter is so cute! ❤
In the iMac 2020 video, Dave showed the computer in the same corner where he put the Pixel Tablet in the kitchen.
@@JeanoLeBlanco I didn't see this video. But this is a proof that it only happened on rare occasions.
I love the way Dave pronounced 'audiosystems'.
@Farb S could've/should've made a dock pro with these extra features.... having a 'speaker' that doesn't even connect over Bluetooth is just dumb
What are you doing with temp and humidity sensors? Don't you have thermostats?
@@nikilragav several countries do not have centralized heating with thermostats. You have isolated AC on each room, with temp and humidity you can easily create automations per room, associate with door/window sensors to define if the AC is on/off/cold/heat.
@@Arts11234 my opinion come also from the fact that the echo dot 5 has these capabilities and costs 60usd. The Google dock is more expensive, does not justify for having magnets inside.
Dave2D you have the hair of a king.
Dave's kids watching this video in future and realizing that their dad called them stupid, hehe.
I absolutely loved the old nexus line of tablets and this kind of reminds me of those... Although I use tablets far less these days I'd say.
Me: Dave is not a typical Asian parent.
Also Dave: "My kids are stupid!" 💀
this lol, i noticed that. a little jarring to hear a parent say that. on the other hand, i know he didnt mean it.
Come on man, it was clearly a joke.
3 year olds are stupid. not the same kind of stupid as some adults, but still stupid
Man so much value in this product!
I would be concerned about longevity. Every month it seems like Google is cancelling or sunsetting another feature or product. I’m not comfortable enough with the companies history of long term support or privacy concerns to buy anymore of their hardware.
Especially in the tablet category: Google come up with a new tablet concept every other year to quickly abandon it next year
Yeah. I checked out after the Nexus 9 for the same reason
Dave, can you please make a laptop buying guide so far for this year.❤
3:56 💀💀💀 dave spitting facts
@@matt-langstill not easily removed with how much effort it takes to remove it from the base
You look young and movie-character-like in these shots. I don't know if it's the hair, genetics, or your choice of clothing but please keep it up.
Thank you for mentioning the profiles!
I don't think Android can make a comeback without solid app support
And nobody wants to invest in app support for android without a large consumer base having android tablets.. and there lies the dilemma
Android has way more apps on their stores, what are you talking about?
It's good that you bring up the profile aspect of these devices. I'm still baffled that is 2023 and Apple doesn't have it, and Android has it but is really primitive. The way it should be, these things should log you into your profile by using fingerprint or face recognition. The swappy thingy at the top is only good for adults, children yes they can learn these things but can you imagine if "it just worked"
Apple has it, but for whatever reason, they don't release it for customer devices, only for MDM version.
As a fellow dad, I can also relate to going from semi-professional looking to someone who just hasn't been able to escape long enough to get a haircut ;) Excellent review!
I think second version of this product would be really good
Lol, there wont be a second version #killedbygoogle😄
what would even want in a 2nd version?
@@Dave2D just to fix any issues current version has , take feedback from users and make a better product in next iteration,
like said in video ,fitting in charging dock is little finicky , no bluetooth connectivity to charging dock etc , hopefully these get fixed in next iteration
also its not like apple is releasing this product , the google track record of releasing hardware is not very good , either first version is filled with issues or they drop support for it if it doesn’t sell well , like google stadia , so right now careful of first version , hopefully second version would be really good
I work at Best Buy and have had hands on with the Pixel tablet as well…I have no clue what Dave is talking about with the stand magnets. It’s extremely simple and easy to place on the stand and take off without issue. I don’t even know where he got that from lol
"im a dad with 2 kids"
Kudos for not abandoning them to get milk and raising them
You really don't have to be everywhere
Cringe
I love how doing what you're supposed to do is commendable nowadays, I know you're joking but the joke is somewhat true.
All things aside...... Loving the new look, Dave!
Apple's next big thing: Profiles
Apple would rather every family member have their own iPad
google products are so underrated, this tablet is amazing and beatiful. As well, including the stand it's something that apple would never could
the fact that iPads don't have user profiles is crazy since iPads are probably mostly used as a shared family thing rather then one person!
"They will implement it when they perfect it".
- Every apple defender.
I think if they were used by more than 1 person mostly, Apple would have that data and implement the change. There must not be a big need for it lol
They prefer you to buy one ipad for every person so they could make more money.
Your daughter is adorable Dave. Great video as always man!
I really hope this helps get other apps to make a better tablet experience as well
I have.
They can always make it and say "you want Bluetooth speaker dock, buy it separately". These companies always keep the gap to fill later.
It's been awhile since I've seen one of your videos. Growing out the hair, nice 👌
These engineers and higher ups need stop having the “eh good enough” mentality when theyre competing with the ipad and samsung. Make it great or let it cook.

With google now in the tablet market, I really do hope they will work to optimize the apps better. Then finally my samsung tab will feel worth 🤣.
Apps are OK on android tablets. What do you mean?
Hard to compete with ipads when you can get a new 9th gen for less than $300 and even with it not have Apple's newest SOC is still faster than basically every android tablet.
not to mention the way better app support for ipads
Edit: Also I'm not an apple person, haven't owned an apple product since the Iphone 4 but, I also don't like tablets and prefer my XPS 13 laptop for bigger screen work supplementing my Note 20 Ultra.

Other than that, a great first entrance from google into the tablet game.
does support the universal stylus standard
it suports usi 2.0, literally any pen that supports it will work
Dave Really like it.Thanks so much for sharing ✌️
Why the speaker dock does not use USB-C?
