I grew up in Yakima and watched my dad and Wally Pease fish together often. Wally had a fishing show on KYVE in Yakima and my dad was the GM at the station. My dad is still alive but can't go fishing anymore and gave me all of his gear. There was about 100 brand new lures from back in the '80's in several boxes along with almost a dozen rods and reels that dad and Wally used. This video brings back great memories - THANKS!
Man that's super amazing to have grown up with such great influence!! I'm from Washington grew up west side, but lived in selah my junior yr in high school. Love the gorge!!
Fantastic fishing! Love watching Bill do what he does, he's got more experience then most people have in life years in one finger! He really is a true legend of the pnw!
Bull trout are a char. Before the dams they could make see runs where they could. And for you to be catching Dollies like that, that is a great sign for their recovery!
I got a 5 lbs sea run cutty on the N.F Lewis followed by a 6 lbs rainbow all on the same day it was the craziest thing I have ever seen in 30 years of fishing that river
@@brianskinner5711 why would I lie I been fishing that river for 30 years.. I’ve been a guide for over 10 years.. I have no reason to bullshit anyone..
I believe it, caught a 21 inch sea run cutthroat while winter steelhead fishing that river last December. I thought it was a small steelhead at first until I saw those red markings under his chin.
@@transient2060 I thought that my cutty was a summer steelhead!! And my partner that got the rainbow thought he had on a small springer until we got eyes on!! Fishing the waterfall at the meat hole 😁
Hey, just an FYI, its illegal to fully remove that bull trout from the water like you did. There are very specific regs for that due to their protection in the Yakima drainages. Gotta keep them in the water while removing the hook.
You just have to check regulations and think about which fish are best to eat ethically and for food quality. At times, most of the Columbia and it's tribs have salmon. Around each dam is typically a starting point. Look at more of the AWTV episodes from the Columbia and they will get you started. Just search Colombia salmon.
I swear a wild river cutty or stealy just has so much more power and will to survive they really put up a heck of a battle. The Lakers I've caught just didn't compare lbs to lbs.
I'm not even a fisherman, but even I know that you shouldn't drag your fish around on the rocks if your gonna release them. Don't you have a damn net?! Wtf?

The title said Eastern Washington, which got me excited to watch a video on my side of the state. Yakima is pretty far west though. 😔 also, it was a pretty cool video, until Bill snagged, snapped off, and when he retied his bait, he just snipped his tag ends, and let em just drop on the ground. That's a horrible example to be setting. Yall should be ashamed of yourselves. Boooo
They did swim away strong but that can be misleading. Dragging those fish into the shallows was needlessly hard on them. If you're going to let them go, please don't bang them up.
Love this guy. However, dragging a fish on the bank, while wearing waders??? Didn’t see you touch the water. Love Bill but, you’re old school fish handling is why we have no fish.
Not saying he did it the best way but it’s also hard when your landing a fish that big by yourself. He could have done a lot worse and that fish is for sure still swimming today.
He did 0 damage to that fish, the way he handled him I would argue is even better than a net. In the water almost the whole time and let him go very quickly.

Ridiculous a state record are you kidding me?! What a tank of a cutthroat trout! Bill Herzog is the man, great content.

I didn't believe that scene inside his truck, because there wasn't loud rock music drowning out his voice. You call that a road trip Bill?
This is Little Naches, right?
Congrats Bill on being prepared when the "Big One" hit. Remember you from Sportco , and reading your books from Vashon Island.

Shortly after I get my new hip joint I plan on joining you on the east side of the ridge !
Wow that was huge!!!! Nice cut!!!!! On camera!😮
What rod and reel set up are you using? I want to set up the same rod and reel you are using.
Beautiful fish👏🎣
Thank you so much bill herzog
The beginning of the theme song sounds like Black Sabbath, far out.
what type of rod/ reel setup are you using?

Do you ever keep a fish to eat? Wondering where in Eastern Washington you go to Salmon Fish?

What length and weight of a rod works best for that technique? As if I need another rod lol.
I live in Pasco, Wa not too far from that spot. Wish i knew exactly where it is at, id take my kiddos
It's the mouth of the Yakima river
what river is this? looks like a must fly fish
Leave it to Bill! He ain't a fishin' legend for nuthin'!
Bill with a biggin alert 🚨
Where is this I would like to get on some big trout even if it’s just catch and realese
What river is this? Is it floatable?
Hardcore sharpening hooks so much. 😁
what hook file is that?
Beautiful cutty, but way too long out for the water for optimum fish survival. Why no net?
The way he handled that fish was even better than using a net… 0 damage done to the fish there.
black sabbath n the fish of a F'n life time.
I want some of your jigs Bill!!!
What a legend!
General you better do a replica. Congrats .
Bull trout and dolly varden are 2 different species.
Pretty sure last year i caught one that was bigger then that and i have the pics to prove it!
Let's see a pic!
That was awesome
that fish was no 7lbs but maybe 4 and half if that
Those cuts would be a blast on a fly rod
8 - 10lbs trout they stock at lake

Yeah I'm pretty sure they are trespassing to get to couple of these spots lol. I lived in Ellensburg so I wasn't to far
Onx has changed the game. Pretty easy to know these days. It's very common for people to post land that isn't theirs which is illegal.
