Spot on Mike. It is an easy trap to allow yourself to get emotionally involved. Never argue with an idiot - they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. Your thinking fans are watching how you respond - treat it as an opportunity to come off as the better person - the professional adult in the room.

Really good advice. The trolls, the guys and gals with nothing good to say or contribute in a positive way don't add value. the personal "joking" comment is especially relevant. In the end the work always talks for itself. Allowing any one negative and dragging you down in life or socials are a waste of everyone's time. An old tradesman told me over 2 years ago, always provide opinions and advice, but if the person want to argue then that's a different type of discussion that shod take place in the car park. Great advice.

In my experience with them, since they only want to get noticed and get a reaction, I respond a few ways. If it's entirely obscene I block them from the channel. If it's just childish desperation to get noticed I reply with "Thanks for watching." The last is someone with no social skills who needs prompting. Like, Do you mean _____?

  • @keithroute8906

Good advice. As a commenter it always amazes me how quickly people jump to conclusions and want to start an argument. Usually comes from a misunderstanding but some people just like to mess with other people. I like the channel, I don’t form metal the same way you do for a lot of reasons but I also built my business for rust repair speed living in the rust belt on the frozen tundra. We only have time for one high end build a year, then five or six quick ones, finishing metal work at your normal speed and quality level is way better finished than my place does in forming a fairly decent panel in a half hour and welding it in. So I would already know, even a tip or different technique comment would immediately be attacked, so I don’t comment. On the other end of the industry we have channels fixing floors with road signs and license plates or making panels with hammers only. You would wish they would at least try to learn metal forming but many of the cars they work on are so far rusted and the car is of such low retail value, who cares. They are not set up to work metal, they don’t have decent equipment for it nor do they have the skills and knowledge to do it well if they did. It just makes a metalsmith cringe a little watching them butcher something but that is how they do it. You can still learn things and pick up tips to save money on budget builds. Nothing wrong with it, aside from structural integrity issues in many cases and you realize it is simply very low quality repair work. I just wouldn’t do it that way nor would I want something leaving my shop built that way but they do it that way. The argumentative people are not always very old, they have not built hundreds of cars and if they did, they wouldn’t be slamming other peoples work and would have a clue on what you creators were trying to get across. Just not worth the aggravation commenting in more cases than not, the nasty commenters can’t be sent back to fourth grade and taught manners.

The problem with social media platforms is that they give a voice to foolish people who are not yet able to write a sentence without mistakes. This is one of the reasons why I don't have a Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok account. I'm 57 years old, there was no internet for most of my life, and yet I've been happy all this time. I don't want to brag about myself, but in this world there are far more people who are more foolish than I am than there are people who are smarter. Unfortunately, we can't ban the foolish people from the internet... So no social media for me...

It is jealously most of the time, I get it on a forum from time to time when I show something I have made.
Multi skilled people in your trade are at the top of the tree and make it look easy, what you have to work out is how much time you spend on nursing an enquiry! Like the 5 second rule dropping a bit of toast on the floor lol
Good engineer's don't make the best business people as we are more into making the product than dealing with a poor enquiry. Not sure if this helps but I over the years stopped doing the Garden gate welding type jobs as there would never be meat in those jobs. When people would say "can you fix the latch thing"
I would just say No Sorry.

Honestly, you know you've made it on a social platform when you start to get haters. I've been posting on IG for a decade with 400+ posts and I've never had 1 bad comment. I'd welcome some hate. Interaction helps the algorithm. Replying to a bunch of complements usually ends with my "thank you" reply. A hater will continue to engage and if you have an established "fan base." Your fans will do the "heavy lifting" in calling out those people. If I had haters, I'd let the comments run themselves at least 6 hours or so before I'd reply. Let the followers do the talking. It's engagement and it's not YOU personally doing it.

I am not going to mention who but one of the guys I have followed for a long time that you can not ask a single question without being jumped on unless you are parsing him as the god of metal shaping. Not saying someone has to be a punching bag but in some cases the reply is just down right ignorant or insulting ( not that I have seen you do that). You get 20 plumbers in to fix the same issue, one after another and they will all say the guy before didn't know what they were doing. This is a philosophy to live by in my opinion.

Most of us here have quite a few shaping tools and experience so I'm just enjoying watching machinery I can't afford. There are always those people who just want to walk around trashing everyone’s build saying they would do it different or better.
