@@ManofthePeople12 Alright. Jesus doesn't appreciate Judas' warning when Simon says that, he simply reacts negatively after understanding the lowly motivations of Simon and the zealots, which happens exactly after Simon asks him to add hate towards Rome in his speech. It's the contradiction between the request and Jesus' philosophy that makes Jesus react that way, I don't think it has anything to do with Jesus appreciating Judas' warning about "being too loud" at all. Jesus takes issue with the request (professing hate towards Rome), not with how loud it's being said. Jesus loudly professes love in front of the Pharisees in "Hossana"; and in the first part of this song, even though there are romans there, he is not trying to hide neither himself nor the zealots; he is happy with them until they ask him to hate in order to pursue a political goal. Man, that look between Judas and Jesus after Simon makes that "Rome" comment was so powerful. I love when actors have such a chemistry and connection to the piece and characters where little subtle things can have just as much impact as big, grand numbers.
Say what you will about it, or me for that matter but the music and joy and performance of this production did more for me and my spirit growing up than years of sermons ever could have. Lots of diversity and love and you get to see the characters not as good or bad but as human. We're all struggling with something, aren't we? Anyway, I know to some this movie and the play were and are controversial but I just love it.
As controversial as the Man it is about. I LOVE this opera. It came out as I was having my greatest struggle with faith and even though I was angry with God, I had to admit nothing moved me greater than the love of Jesus. My walls began to crumble for love, and I felt it when I watched and heard this rendition of His Life. It still moves me to goosebumps or tears.
God, I love this number. The thrilling intro and choreography throughout, the intense exuberance of the dancing, the unbelievable performance by Larry Marshall as Simon Zealotes, and the complex and deeply sad shading of the acting between the main characters. Awesome. The beauty of it actually still makes me cry, after all these years....
👏♥️ I wonder if every performer in this film was provided with deep context on who the characters were and what they wanted, because the acting is so superb, so on point
me too @Highbelter . the musicality of {"Jesus, I am on your side"} really hits me in the gut. ...I bet a lot of folks in the 1st Century uttered those words with concealed motive and half baked sincerity. As long as they got what they wanted. It's profound how a music key (is that the right word? I'm limited with music terms. it might be pitch, I don't know) can send you an emotion in nanoseconds😲
Fun fact. The female dancer that is often next to Simon with dark brown hair, black pants, and brown bikini top is LeeAnn who married Ted Neeley and they are still together.
Book Forge: they could only shoot all that awesome choreography in 30 second blocks at the most, because otherwise the dancers would get too hot and dehydrated. Don't let anyone tell you that singers/actors/dancers aren't f'in hard core! ;)
Ron Allman I met the man who played Jesus and he said that it was an amazing time, they'd play football in the desert and he met his wife (one of the dancers) whilst filming
Went to see waitress the musical this week on tour and the guy who played Simon, is in it as the old guy who owns the diner , he can still really sing 🎤 and was great in the show
There are two ways to makes a diverse casting, one is by meritocracy, as every race and gender has the same talent then a meritocratic process will generate a diverse group. The other options is by crying like spoilt babies because "not enough diversity", this second method also works but will hardly ever generates a group so talented like this one, it will only generate shit like "birds of prey" or "charlie's angels 2019"
One of the best dance scenes on film. Quite complex but they just make it look so easy and make it totally work. I don’t know but think Lady Gaga may have been inspired in some of the choreography for her video Judas. Love this sequince so much. This is how the 1970’s could look so cool. Their cloths look so good.
It is exquisite and wonderful. We knew all the lyrics from the British production recording, then the film came out. This scene on the screen being seen the first time, we all.....got up out of our seats singing with the dancers....took our breath away...Chicago, Illinois, 1973.
I saw it on stage in London when I was 14 years old (1974, easy to work out my age lol) and the staging, the music, the set, all of it had such a effect on me. The film has such a special atomasphere to it. Wonderful. Recently saw it here in London for 2 years running in Regents Park open air theatre and seeing the same production (this time in doors) this year 2019 in London. The same production played in 2018 in the Chicago Opera House and was totally sold out as it was in the UK. It goes on in many different forms/productions as the music and lyrics and the pacing of the script are so strong. I have even seen it live sung in Japanese and it was wonderful.
also: the editing and fx for the early 70s both seem advanced to me and executed to perfection throughout the whole thing but especially at 2:11 , 2:32.
Young Lady, that's why they built a 'Wall".........too much hanky panky and Satriles no longer serves pork sausages but oatmeal is now the food of the gods.
Fantastic dancing and the enthousiastic Simon Zealotes and then by Judas and the Roman soldiers. One of my favorite songs of Jesus Christ Superstar...🌈🎵👏❗
This song represents one of the 3 times in the Bible that the devil tempted Jesus, in this case with (political) power. When the posessed Simon sings "Keep them yelling their devotion, but add a touch of hate at Rome...", you can see Jesus' expression change from enjoyment to disappointment and dismay. Simon continues "You'll get the power and the glory, lord...", and Jesus answers him in the next song "Poor Jerusalem". He sings "Neither you, Simon, nor the fifty-thousand..." etc. "... understand what power is, understand what glory is...". Jesus repudiates the devil's temptation, maintains his covenant with God, and continues on his path to the cross.
It also helps understand the current state of the church, in which the powerful uses Jesus teachings of love and care to hate and kill, justifying themselves by believing they know more than Jesus.
4:33-4:40 this is the shot that showed me how to flatten my tongue right for singing when I was being vocally trained. That had been the hardest part to do while singing. Thank you Larry Marshall for helping me without even knowing it. 🎶😊
People would rip on this, I honestly love it, it's so happy and upbeat, love watching all these people dance together in unison, so much feeling captured for the film
I just love the back-up vocals especially at the ending. "Fifty thousand! Love love love! Messiah! You get the glory! Forever and ever! You get the power! Forever Amen!"
Crowd: Christ, you know I love you; did you see I waved? I believe in you and God, so tell me that I'm saved Christ, you know I love you; did you see I waved? I believe in you and God, so tell me that I'm saved Jesus, I am with you; touch me, touch me, Jesus Jesus, I am on your side; kiss me, kiss, me Jesus Simon Zealotes: Christ, what more do you need to convince you That you've made it and you're easily as strong As the filth from Rome who rape our country And who've terrorized our people for so long? Crowd: Christ you know I love you did; you see I waved? I believe in you and God, so tell me that I'm saved Christ you know I love you; did you see I waved? I believe in you and God, so tell me that I'm saved Jesus, I am with you; touch me, touch me, Jesus Jesus, I am on your side; kiss me, kiss me, Jesus Simon Zealotes: There must be over fifty thousand Screaming love and more for you And every one of fifty thousand Would do whatever you ask him to Keep them yelling their devotion But add a touch of hate at Rome You will rise to a greater power We will win ourselves a home You'll get the power and the glory For ever and ever and ever Amen! Amen!
Love this! What voices! What dancers! The energy with the sand being kicked up and heat...Just phenomenal.-I always loved how all races were represented in this rock opera It was cool to stage it in the Holy Land and incorporate items from Jesus day with the present (1973). For example, the Roman soldiers carried spears and automatic weapons.
+Gianluca Sforza ciao gianluca, anche a me è il pezzo che piace di più, anche se la canzone preferita di questo musical incredibile è Heaven on their minds!!
Love this movie so much. There are so many tiny details that gives the story a new dimension. Like Jesus' smile fading when he's asked to "add a touch of hate at Rome"
What Simon feeds Jesus beginning at 3:21 is how I picture manipulative advisors act toward well intentioned Politicians. Not all politicians start out scandalous, I'd like to believe most start with good intentions. Somewhere along the way, they cut a shady deal to push their agenda and then another and another until well intentions are lost through all the shade. In this case, Simon represents the shady deal and Jesus the well-intentioned Politician.
Simon was trying to persuade Jesus into instilling hatred for the Roman occupants into his followers in order to have them become violent toward opposing forces and therefore harder to deal with, despite that obviously going against his teachings.
I always love at 3:38, the way Simon belts out those lines, then seamlessly joins the already perfectly synchronized group running-man-type dance. (The Hallelujah Running Man?)
Ever since I got it as a gift, I've been listening to the soundtrack quite often. But there is something magical about seeing it on-screen (and plus the mixing on the soundtrack CD is pretty awful). I was 20 or 21 when I saw "Jesus Christ Superstar". I knew some Guy name Jesus was a cool guy who helped people. He was born on Christmas - And died on Easter- [I did not understand what he had to do with santa claus, christmas trees,etc... Who was Jesus? -This is the hardest question in the world! Needless to say there are so many contradictory possible answers, even ateist answers... Savior if you accept! :)
@@ferencrarosi8101 Savior even if you don't accept, Ferenc. Jesus saves unbelievers, not believers. People believe in Him after they are saved, not before.
Everyone is right, lol. There are multiple Simons among the disciples, including the Simon who denied three times before the cock crowed twice (whom Christ renamed Peter.) Whether or not this one, Simon the Zealot, was a religio-political revolutionary is still a point of debate among theologians and historians. Zealot can be translated several different ways, and could mean at least three different things. It seems like the actual political Zealot movement might not have got going until some years after the crucifixion, so there is real debate there-- but here, he is definitely depicted as that kind of Zealot.
Now thats what I call being seriously filled with the spirit. Such an amazing, uplifting, inspiring song, from the powerful driving music to the acting/choreography and dancing. He reacted when Simon asked him to add "hate towards Rome" in his speech, which is contrary to Christ's philosophy.
Krista Harris this movie explained everything where I could understand it
Krista Harris my mom called it blasphemy but she couldn't explain why I think they don't like the idea that it portrays Jesus as being human
I love this song and movie. I used to have the album and saw this when it first came out. So much emotion! Bless those that believe.
I agree!
the guy who plays Simon the Zealot sends chills down my spine ; what voice ; what precence !!
ABSOLUTELY, WITHOUT DOUBT, THE MOST INCREDIBLE AND GREATEST MUSICAL OF A OUR TIME!!!
Fun fact. The female dancer that is often next to Simon with dark brown hair, black pants, and brown bikini top is LeeAnn who married Ted Neeley and they are still together.
Mandu mika incredible she was the dancer i thought he married i am glad they together still
This makes me so happy! Thank you!
That is a very nice and heartwarming fun fact.
Mandu mika How do you know this ?
Is this a fact ? Mandy Mike?
Can you even imagine the fun they must of all had making this !
i don't know how to love him
Book Forge every time I see this sequence I keep thinking "OMG, the sand! they are sweaty!" I cannot imagine how they kept the energy to shot this.
The lenght of their shadows on the ground tells it must have been either early morning or evening when they were shooting this.
2:52 Judas is like "What the f*ck is going on here?!"
Resting Judas Face
That'd be my face
Went to see waitress the musical this week on tour and the guy who played Simon, is in it as the old guy who owns the diner , he can still really sing 🎤 and was great in the show
He is such a sweet man. facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10153778648849746&set=a.10153778615689746&type=3&theater
I worked with him on a production of Driving Miss Daisy. An amazing actor and a funny & kind soul, too.
The best song in the best musical(les mis close second) this whole film is a masterpiece, nearly every song is enjoyable.
Larry Marshal is absolutely amazing, he dances and sings in such powerful manner. I love it
I adore the way Larry Marshall does the line “There must be over 50,000”! With the hands and the wild eyes and that amazing voice!
I love how diverse this cast was
Amazing especially for a movie made in the 70s
@@leonardharris8884 there were some amazingly progressive people in the 70s. I remember the whole decade as 100% awesome.
exactly now society seems to be going backwards
There are two ways to makes a diverse casting, one is by meritocracy, as every race and gender has the same talent then a meritocratic process will generate a diverse group. The other options is by crying like spoilt babies because "not enough diversity", this second method also works but will hardly ever generates a group so talented like this one, it will only generate shit like "birds of prey" or "charlie's angels 2019"
Actually, in today's standards, this movie would be criticized by SJW retards because the good guy is a white male and the villain is a black guy.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!"
That part always gives me goose bumps
Just a brilliant ending to this piece. You don't know what he's singing until the full chorus of --MENNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMEEEEEEEEENNNN YEAH
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏😍😍😍😍😅☘️😅☘️👍👍👍👍🌺🌺🌺
(a brief moment of silence)
🎵Neither you, Simon, nor the fifty thousand, nor the Romans, nor the Jews…🎵
I gotta say this movie absolutely enthralls me every time. This dance scene in particular is mind blowing.
I bet! Great comment--I can imagine it. I saw this first as a young child, but it has always taken my breath away.
Love that Simon dudes energy!
That moment at 3:27 when Simon said "but add a touch of HATE at Rome" and Jesus changes his face is epic!
and then he looks around like "thats what you're worshipping me for?!? uh oh....."
neither YOU Simon
it is THE moment.
I never noticed that. Really cool. Good catch!
Young Lady, that's why they built a 'Wall".........too much hanky panky
and Satriles no longer serves pork sausages but oatmeal is now
the food of the gods.
Fantastic dancing and the enthousiastic Simon Zealotes and then by Judas and the Roman soldiers. One of my favorite songs of Jesus Christ Superstar...🌈🎵👏❗
Really captures the energy and exuberance of the era - just magical.
You know, the Christian message in this musical is actually pretty strong. I showed it to my confirmands, and they loved it.
Wow, you are right
It also helps understand the current state of the church, in which the powerful uses Jesus teachings of love and care to hate and kill, justifying themselves by believing they know more than Jesus.
Tyvm for this teaching. 🙏🏽🙏🏻🙏🏿
Ballet, know Hollywood. Guys in perfect sports form, especially this "dive" and smooth landing on hands-respect, Bravo!
My all time favorite sequence of the movie. Timeless.
Superb perfomance. Also, incredible bassist there playing behind.
I just love the back-up vocals especially at the ending. "Fifty thousand! Love love love! Messiah! You get the glory! Forever and ever! You get the power! Forever Amen!"
3:04 - Just *LOVE* how Ted momentarily breaks character and starts giggling, like wtf is the matter with this guy?!! ❤️😆❤️
he did not break character. It was spiritual amusement and joy.
Crowd:
Christ, you know I love you; did you see I waved?
I believe in you and God, so tell me that I'm saved
Christ, you know I love you; did you see I waved?
I believe in you and God, so tell me that I'm saved
Jesus, I am with you; touch me, touch me, Jesus
Jesus, I am on your side; kiss me, kiss, me Jesus
Simon Zealotes:
Christ, what more do you need to convince you
That you've made it and you're easily as strong
As the filth from Rome who rape our country
And who've terrorized our people for so long?
Crowd:
Christ you know I love you did; you see I waved?
I believe in you and God, so tell me that I'm saved
Christ you know I love you; did you see I waved?
I believe in you and God, so tell me that I'm saved
Jesus, I am with you; touch me, touch me, Jesus
Jesus, I am on your side; kiss me, kiss me, Jesus
Simon Zealotes:
There must be over fifty thousand
Screaming love and more for you
And every one of fifty thousand
Would do whatever you ask him to
Keep them yelling their devotion
But add a touch of hate at Rome
You will rise to a greater power
We will win ourselves a home
You'll get the power and the glory
For ever and ever and ever
Amen! Amen!
Who played Simon the Zealot. Wow what a singer!
Larry t marshall

Best opera rock ever
Yes!
Now we're really talking HD. So sick of every video having HD in the title and then it turns out to be 480p. Thanks uploader.
How many pixels minimum is HD?
720 and 1080 are the two most common HD resolutions.
THIS IS MY FAVORITE SONG IN THE WHOLE SHOW
This was my feeling when the film was released and it hasn't changed.
Judas is disgusted because it's the only song that's better than his.
me too
Heaven on their minds is great too.
What about Gethsemane?
Love this! What voices! What dancers! The energy with the sand being kicked up and heat...Just phenomenal.-I always loved how all races were represented in this rock opera It was cool to stage it in the Holy Land and incorporate items from Jesus day with the present (1973). For example, the Roman soldiers carried spears and automatic weapons.
my favourite moment of the most beautiful musical movie ever made
+Gianluca Sforza ciao gianluca, anche a me è il pezzo che piace di più, anche se la canzone preferita di questo musical incredibile è Heaven on their minds!!
Totally agree with you, these are the moments in which life seems to be perfect. In a sense this movie changed my life, beloved memories...
AMEN AMEN AMEN
Agree❤
I don't understand how some can call this blasphemy when it feels us with so much joy
I love the power of this performance. Perfect zeolot
I’m sorry, I know I’m a year late, but wanting to liberate your occupied homeland from corrupt foreign powers is “shady”???????????
Simon was trying to persuade Jesus into instilling hatred for the Roman occupants into his followers in order to have them become violent toward opposing forces and therefore harder to deal with, despite that obviously going against his teachings.
They're called 'yes men' lol most celebrities have them, if not surrounded by them
Thank you for the beautiful HD quality with the most beautiful dance scene in any movie ever made!
I always love at 3:38, the way Simon belts out those lines, then seamlessly joins the already perfectly synchronized group running-man-type dance. (The Hallelujah Running Man?)
+guyhandsome43 He looked like he was having a controlled, choreographed epileptic seizure. But he was a zealot. :)
Wow! Best dancing piece eve in the history of movie musicals!
the best dance routine ever!!!
Genius and amazing choreography.
amazing every time i watch JC Superstar
Ever since I got it as a gift, I've been listening to the soundtrack quite often. But there is something magical about seeing it on-screen (and plus the mixing on the soundtrack CD is pretty awful). Fantastic video quality. Very happy that I get to see stuff from my favorite movie of all time in high quality. Thanks for uploading this.
What an opener... "ever since I got it as a gift.." I thought you were talking about another gift... silly me. ;) But yes I love this soundtrack, too!
The slow mos and the freeze frames are amazing plus this had to be one crazy workout
I wish I could every prayer with an amen that amazing.
BigBadSeed for me the whole song is a perfect way to praise it makes more sense to me than me reciting words that I don't use and just repeat from rote
Thank you for this amazing quality!!
+JEANNIE STROUP you're welcome
I've never seen another actor make so much of this song! The choreography/location helps but damn is he selling it
Picture quality is AMAZING! Better than when I first watched it over 25 years ago!
+Amy Cope yeah noticed it too.
+Amy Cope Word.
4:32 How every prayer ever uttered should end. XD
You saw PAW's review too?
Michael Awotwi Yep! It’s one of my favorites! XD
Yeah 😆
the best version
Thanks for posting in H.D. Truly amazing scene...
What a nice song! And I like the way Neeley smiles!
Thanks for posting this! I love this song and movie! Saw it when it first came out! Never tire of a CLASSIC!!
One of many fine scenes from this film. Thank you for the remarkable picture and sound quality, along with using the correct aspect ratio. I wish others who post movie scenes would take such measures.
I tell you the truth - this is my absolute favorite Jesus movie by a mile. This scene captures the excitement of the Lord walking amongst the people. It's physically impossible for me not to dance to this scene.
Ugh wow!!! this movie is a MasterPiece. God be praised
One of my favourite scenes of the movie. Never tired to see this.
Absolutely stunning!!!
Can we just agree that this is one of the greatest performances of all time? I don't think there's anyone that will disagree with that.
Dont u wish u cld dance like this? If only i were young...
Fantastic song eh.
This is amazing!!!! So beautiful!!!!
I love this scene! You can hear the exhaustion in their voices (dancing & singing simultaneously can wear you out), but I know they had so much fun making this
I’m pretty sure they sang this in a studio first and then lip synced it on-camera.
I was not raised with any religious background. Jesus Christ Superstar was the first play I ever saw. It got me wondering who Jesus was? Was this play accurate in who Jesus was? This play got me reading a Bible and accepting Yeshua as my savior.
Keith Strand How old were you when you saw this play? Because not knowing who Jesus is (even if you aren't religious) is kinda serious dude...
I was 20 or 21 when I saw "Jesus Christ Superstar". I knew some Guy name Jesus was a cool guy who helped people. He was born on Christmas - And died on Easter- [I did not understand what he had to do with santa claus, christmas trees,etc... And what he had to do with easter bunnies, and egg hunts,] That was all I knew. You would be surprised how many people who just like me: did not know, and, who do not know today who Jesus is. Below is my facebook page [below] with my story.

Keith Strand AMEN AND HALLELUJAH
Who was Jesus? -This is the hardest question in the world!
Needless to say there are so many contradictory possible answers, even ateist answers...
Savior if you accept! :)
@@ferencrarosi8101 Savior even if you don't accept, Ferenc. Jesus saves unbelievers, not believers. People believe in Him after they are saved, not before.
The dancers are amazing!! 😍👏👏👏🌟
the Holy Spirit hadn't even come down to Jesus' disciples at that point but Simon was sure on fire for Jesus
ummm no, this Simon is not one of the apostles/disciples. he was a zealot hoping Jesus would lead the Jews to revolt against the romans
'Simon the Zealot', who is the Simon here, is supposed to have been one of the twelve apostles.
Jeremy Salkeld the Simon you're referring to is the one who denied him
Everyone is right, lol.
Peter is the one who denied jesus
AMAZING song and dancing. One of the best songs/scenes from JC Superstar in 1973.
Now thats what I call being seriously filled with the spirit. Such an amazing, uplifting, inspiring song, from the powerful driving music to the acting/choreography and dancing. Its the ultimate in gospel meets rock. Such an amazing scene from an equally powerful and amazing musical...one of my favs!
Simon just exploded and went OFF at 1:58! Always my favorite part!
This is a really beautiful song. I got to check this show out sometime. Still going strong.
There is no wonder that dancers are so slim. Think how many calories they expended dancing this. Its fantastic.
At last in HD I realize that Pilate's wife is watching all the dance sequence here. I understand now her reactions later in the movie.
Do you mean woman in re dress? hmm interesting, I've never noticed her before
Sweet Bliss 4:47. You can see a woman on a red dress near some soldiers
Praise Him, Amen! Praise is powerful! This song is more praising than half the songs they sing at church these days. (Is this how Christians look to others?)
Saw the original cast twice. So epic
Me too in Chicago. Lucky.
I just got cast as Simon :)
wow, good luck man
Thanks :)
Lol 😆
Cetty22 DID YOU REALLY? BRING IT. MAKE THEM BELIEVE IT
Love the HD quality! Great job!
Bellissima scenografia ,fantastici ballerini brano stupendo. X me la scena più bella del film
I legit love this movie
beautiful!!! so happy to see this in great quality! thanks! :D
O
Killer bass line.
Thank you for sharing the HD version.
To date best Simon and zealots scene. Amazing choreography: that floor work in the dust could not have been fun.
add the moving mouths, dirt goes in... Ick
Es el mejor musical, con un gran contingente de artistas, y qué decir de la música. Este tipo de espectáculo no se va a ver en mucho tiempo!!
God this is amazing, for many of as but 13 people .....doesn't get that feeling!!!
...simply great ! By the way what about the 15 dislikers ?? Are these deranged ??

Love it!!! Thanks for sharing!!! Be Blessed!!
