    What a fantastic video! I've been waiting since 2019 to see these actually come to pass as an actual thing, and man these things look like BEASTS! The LED gyra is a bit of a let down as it doesn't look as noticeable as the mechanical ones. The K5LLAs are pretty extreme for a passenger unit, perhaps a bit too much. Then again, not too many places where one can hear K5LLAs in regular passenger service. Whatever, these things are so so awesome. I can't believe SD70s are in commuter service! That's just wild. I'm gonna be in the Chicago area at the end of January into the 1st of February and will be stopping at Elgin in hopes of seeing one. Wish me luck!

    I don’t care how everybody’s saying how much they love the sd70’s, I much rather prefer the f40ph. They are awesome locomotives in my opinion. And since metra rebuilt them by progress rail in patterson, georgia, their new paint scheme is eye catching and looking awesome these days. Metra is also the commuter agency that has been operating the f40 for the longest time having some of their units in service since 1977, which means they’re a whopping 47 years old. 😮

    ex-amtrak pacific surfliner f59phi now in metra service. Amtrak phased out the f59s in late 2018 for sc44s and sold them to chicago with the first unit entering metra service in late December 2018. To get the units service ready, metra had to inspect them for any corrosion damage and fix it if they spotted some, paint to units from their previous amtrak scheme to metra colors which includes blue and gray and a little bit of red as well as black on the roof and a bit down the sides, then test them on a doubleheader out on the main line to see if they provide successful, then release them into revenue service. This was all done at the railroad’s 49th street car shop in chicago. They eventually run solo if they can prove to not breakdown and manage to pull trains by themselves, without a backup engine being needed to assist.

    So how do they provide HEP? Were they retrofitted with a HEP generator during the rebuild?

    • @lorthathmerthy
      @lorthathmerthy 11 месяцев назад +10

      HEP is created by the prime mover. No generator.
      2 of the 6 axles are "unpowered" in terms of tractive force.
      Thus, the 2 inverters for those 2 axles are now used to supply HEP while the other 4 axles are creating tractive effort.
      The 2 HEP inverters still receive current from the generator that is rotated by the prime mover.
      However, instead of that current being used to generate tractive force, it is distributed throughout the consist as HEP.
      Hope that helps!

      The SD70MACH, in my opinion, is a much better locomotive than the Charger. With the exception of 504 recently breaking down, they run excellent from what I have heard. And with Metra's fleet being all EMD 645 and 710 prime movers, it would not make any sense in investing in Chargers or F125s. There are no interchangeable parts between their current fleet and non-EMD units along with F125s. Metra was smart in purchasing the SD70MACHs, and other transit agencies can learn a lesson or two from them

    These units are awesome for sure, but it looks like it belongs at the head of a 2 mile long freight train. I guess we wouldnt be AMURICA without such examples of overkill.

      Lol. All that power keeps the commuters on time! I wonder tho if that 1st one was MUed to the unit behind it or just pulling it in tow.

      they are easy trains with easy peasy panels to open, the more rounded the more expensive panels sadly. I feel you though. glad we have rideable trains and they are extremely nice examples too
