This is one of the best Amtrak “review videos” I’ve watched. Instead of going through the nitty gritty of what the train offers, you actually interacted with the staff and other passengers. Thanks! This is going to be a bucket list for me to take the train cross country.
So, this is my first Simon video, being a longtime subscriber of people like Jeb Brooks and Noel Philips (and a 30 year vet of the travel industry). I'm hooked! He is like a ray of sunshine on a dreary, overcast day! Amtrak exists for appearances sake, nowadays. Most of the delays experienced are due to the fact that freight trains have the right of way on the rails. Having to pull over and let other trains pass (some of which have *_dozens_* of cars) can wreak havoc on a schedule. I live on the old Pennsylvania Railroad line and I've seen trains with as many as 34 cars. I've learned to take Amtrak's arrival and departure times as a wish list, unless it's from a huge city (and even then...). Also, Kiki for CEO!
"Always a fun time!" I've had plenty of not-fun times on Amtrak. I love travel by train but Amtrak coach is painful for overnight trips and sleeper rooms cost triple or quadruple what you'd pay for first class airfare.
I’m doing a 57 hour Amtrak from penn state to San Francisco, first time in America by myself (only 18) this has been a massive help mate really appreciate it !!!!
A friend and I took all the Amtrak trains around the US as well as a cruise to the inside passage on a month long travel journey. It was a great experience. All the conductors on Amtrak were top-notch. We would do it again. We started in Jeff City, went to St. Louis, then to Chi ago before starting the sleeper car "closet with a view" experience. We stayed a few days in Seattle at the Green Tortoise hostel. There was the wine train after the cruise, then criss-crossing all over in sleeper cars. We ended up in Kansas City and family drove us back home for a vacation in the Ozarks. The cruise was ok, too.
That’s a great trip, back in 2004 I did LA to NY via Chicago in the sleeper seat, spent 3 days with a friend In Manhattan and took the train straight back to San Fran, I think it was 3 or 4 nights each time. On the way there we missed our connection in Chicago so they bussed us 90 mins away to a motel. All the other customers were a bit angry at the delay, but after 48 hours without a shower or bed I was in heaven. I remember my 1 month Amtrak unlimited pass was less than $400, I spent at least 10 nights on the train, it was the best trip ever.
Its very very refreshing to see that your personality is really similar to my own being a happy person, ppl person, enjoy traveling, meeting new ppl, conversating with total strangers, adventurous, fly by the seat of my pants, no hold bars, come and go as i please, soak in experiences, and living in the moment type of person!💙💜
Love it. My dad would never fly and every year we’d take the train to from Philly to Colorado together to see relatives. It’s such a different experience. For the first day, you’re very excited and it’s blast. The next day or two, the novelty wears off and you’re just ready to be there. Lol. But everybody should try a cross country trip on the train. You won’t regret it.
A couple of years ago I took Amtrak from Los Angeles to Seattle, and back it was a fantastic experience! Everyone at Amtrak was amazing. From the minute I arrived at Union Station all the way up to Seattle, everyone I encountered from Amtrak were incredibly kind and helpful. Some of the best customer service I've ever had. They take pride in their work and it shows.
As someone who's ridden over 35,000 miles by Amtrak, my favorite part was always sharing a meal with a stranger. Got to hear so many stories and meet so many people!
Simon, I love your positivity, politeness, and willingness to take the time to compliment and thank the people you interact with. It may seem like a small gesture but it is such a meaningful gesture that I appreciate so much and I'm so confident that the people who receive those gestures are so thankful for that little bit of time that you take to make your interaction with them meaningful. That type of kindness is contagious and spreads further beyond just that one person you interact with. They go on to share a similar kind and caring interaction with someone else. I always say leading by example is the best way to make a positive change in the world and you are definitely doing your part to lead with that positive, kind, polite, and caring example! Not every person you interact with will be kind but you carry on without letting it bother you too much. I understand that has to be very difficult, especially with the way people act online toward others as well, but you carry on with the best of positivity. Please don't ever change and keep spreading that kindness that is so meaningful. I have nothing but respect for that! Good on ya mate!
First time viewing you. You are a happy chap but you somehow miss the spirit of train travel in the US. We in the US have a vast beautiful country with miles and miles of wide open spaces, small towns and many large cities. Many of us enjoy train travel...no rush...enjoying the moments...even if there are delays. You missed the peacefulness of travel by train in the US. I hope other Europeans, when they visit, see our country for what it is, proud people who are living in nature's wonderland. Peace...
