When spraying a roof or hood it is best to start from the center and work out to the edge that way you are working away from the wet surface. Looked real good when completed.
aye fitz i think it wasn't coming out right because the can was at a 90 degree angle. usually if the spray paint can isn't facing up and down it causes drips and like kinda spits the paint out. oh and the paint tends to dry in front of the nozzle so you have to wipe it every once in a while
I was considering doing the exact same process to my C6. I'm glad to know it works and came out this well! I would probably also consider applying a hydrophobic clear on top to protect it.
Beautiful job, my 2020 ND has a grey top, it started to discolor so I'm babying it from now on: keeping the top covered and using ragtop cleaner and fabric protector. Black dye will be my backup in 3 years
Well I did it. Overall pretty pleased, Did yours come out with a little bit of lines because the inconsistency in the spray or do they fade after it dried?
My friend The next time you're going to spray Using the spray can put the spray 15 minutes before you use it on hot water. The painting well delude it it will be flowed. A lot Easier.
I wish you would have came back next day and lowered the top and then put it back up so we could see that it holds up. Im about to do this to my BMW 650i so wish me luck
I did this today and it came out good but once it dryeed it became dull and white looking in some areas unfortunately didnt work for me but it was worth a shot on 08 saturn sky
I know this vid is almost 2 years old, but can you give me an update on how well it held up in rain or other weather that could be destructive? I’m thinking of doing this myself but want to see if it holds up.
i used the same spray can and changed my miata tan soft top to black, its been 9 months now and i have had to respray it twice. I was wondering if u had the same issue?
Hey man, i also have a vinyl tan top, im really interested on how it looks in the sun and stuff, i really want to dye mine black but worried it will make it look really bad

Noted for the future thank you!!
Thank's very good advice.
That came out way better than I thought it would. Looks dope man!
oh 100% im very happy with it

i agree, just hard to avoid when its on the car haha

it generally worked well, could always double what I did and add a ceramic on top, i think it would last a long time

thank you! that is smart and honestly this worked much better than I thought seeing how it was an experiment haha
Hey man where'd u get the glass rear window for the soft top. Looks sick!
it came with the car. the top comes with the glass window so you would have to look for a top with one
I’m thinking about doing this to my bmw Z3. The convertible top is about the same color as yours. Do you recommend doing it this way?
Looks really good....doing the mustang this weekend
thanks and best of luck!
i spray painted my top bright red back in the day and it came out dope, this came out nice tho
bright red? and thank you haha
Did you use the duplicolor vinal dye . I'm seriously thinking of dying mine red .
im thinking of doing mine too from black to red did it last?
nice video dawg, bout to do the same thing to my vert mustang!
thanks man, it worked really well for me even weeks later
same boat here
Just bought the paint, I hope you are my savior for my nc Miata 🙏
me too man good luck

i want to try this but with.. some sort of black sealant spray.. to keep from leaking.
flex seal lol
Just got me a 06 convertible stang, I hate the tan top… thank you 💯
yeah good luck man! I saw this car on FB market like a year and a half later and the top was still black so it worked well
I have a 21. I want my top dark purple if that's possible as the top is black
I wish you would have came back next day and lowered the top and then put it back up so we could see that it holds up. Im about to do this to my BMW 650i so wish me luck
it was awesome on mine for weeks then I sold it, but held up nicely
Spray cans always have to be held upright, not flat nor upside down, that’s why.
I did this today and it came out good but once it dryeed it became dull and white looking in some areas unfortunately didnt work for me but it was worth a shot on 08 saturn sky
maybe try another coat?
@@dfitzwm did you use the gloss black or flat black
I know this vid is almost 2 years old, but can you give me an update on how well it held up in rain or other weather that could be destructive? I’m thinking of doing this myself but want to see if it holds up.
to my knowledge it held up fine for at least a year, not sure what happened to the car after that
i used the same spray can and changed my miata tan soft top to black, its been 9 months now and i have had to respray it twice. I was wondering if u had the same issue?
Mine was black as long as I knew of the car, about a year. mine was vinyl it absorbed a lot of it
Can you tell me the paint brand you used. Looks good man
the link is in the description
Hey man I realize you posted this 11 months ago and I'm just wondering how has it held up? Anything you've noticed?
Not sure, i sold it and it held up well enough as long as I had it
@@dfitzwm how long did you have the car for after spraying?
U have to know how to paint with rattle cans. Many tricks to learn with rattle cans. Flat surfaces,....full can at a slight angle.
yeah but it worked didnt it
How did it hold up in the rain did the paint run?
nah it was honestly solid, saw it like a year later and it was still black
Looks great 👍
thanks it literally worked so well, went from an experiment to a valid option
HOW MANY SPRAY CANS DID YOU END UP USING?
I THINK I USED 2
Hey man, i also have a vinyl tan top, im really interested on how it looks in the sun and stuff, i really want to dye mine black but worried it will make it look really bad
i can arrange an update video
update video?
this came out real nice
I agree man. Its still doing good a few weeks later
That was awesome sir. I'll be dyeing my soft top very soon. Let me know what you think 😁🏹
hi thank you! go for it as far as I know the top held up well with the next 2 owners, just lay it on thick
Does that work on black canvas top
probably not as well, easier to go from light to dark
Would u say this would work on a pram ?
I have no idea what that is
@@dfitzwm pushchair hood sorry a stroll I’m from uk we have different names for it
@@dfitzwm stroller
Can you make a video for post car wash?
it held as long as i had it and like at least a year after I sold it
Mine is same color: camel, but I’m try something stupid: paint with white… 😬
damn good luck
Did it last or did you get spoches later on?
honestly as long as I had it, it lasted super well, surprisingly well
Use a paint brush and fabric paint
Better no streaks and better look
interesting, maybe someone will try
How long did it last
still black to this day
How is it holding up?
still black to this day
Did it begin to flake?
not as long as ive seen the car
I wanted to paint my 2013 Mustang soft top orange... should i?
No
Go for cherry red
You didnt put sealers
yeah yeah nah nah nah yeah nah
planning to do , how long does it last?
at least a year but I havent seen it since
Why not just use a piece of thin cardboard instead of covering all the windows
that wouldve been easier yeah lol
Always wondering what became of Napoleon's brother..😅
lol
Do not do this on a convertible top, you will harden the stitching and it will crack in time rendering your soft top leaky and useless.
mmm youre about a year too late on that once cheif
@@dfitzwm did your soft top leak after you painted it?
