I did my own with plywood, 1"x2", and 1"x3". We did floor to ceiling on 3 sides of a room for around 200 I think. It was super easy! Cut plywood into 7" strips. Nail gun 1x2 to the wall for the height you need. nail gun the plywood to the 1x2. then the 1x3 are the supports on the sides. I am not crazy handy and they are still easy as hell. Then I painted them and added led ribbon lighting to the edges.

The shelving looks pretty good, but I'm concerned that the metal brackets will likely scratch the boxes of the movies that are at either end of each shelf. There needs to be a solid panel at each end of the shelves, that covers the brackets for the full height of each shelf.
Aesthetically, I think the brackets would look better if they were slightly shorter, in line with the length of the shelves and finished off with some sort of covering at the front of the bare metal.

Those shelves you got look amazing! I have some media shelves I bought from Best Buy around Y2K... I think they were rated to hold like 500 CDs, but the shelves could be adjusted to instead/also hold VHS and DVDs! So quaint. I bought two units for about $250. They're mostly made from wood with a black lamenate on them.
Here we are nigh a quarter-century later and those bad boys are holding up fine with my mix of 1,173 4Ks, BDs, and DVDs (no VHS or CDs on them anymore). The shelves are nearly full (I think I'll make it to 1,200), and there's no bowing in the wood, no cracks, or other visible damage other than a scuff or minor scratch from general wear and tear. Next year's going to be a challenge for me as I run out of storage space for my movies... So it's fortunate I found this video. I'll take a look at Modern Shelving. Thanks!

I built my own shelves so they'd fit the walls exactly. It's of course crooked in a few places. I'm not a good cabinet maker so I'm not surprised. I can't decide if I try again or just buy some shelves. I do like that the shelves I can make fit exactly rather than a store bought pre-set dimension. Aluminum sounds like a cool idea.

Moved into an apartment earlier this year, and haven't bought (or watched) DVDs or Blu-rays since-in part because I don't have shelves for them anymore. I had built myself a cheap media shelf when I still lived with my parents, but it had less chance of surviving the move than my Walmart prepack shelves, haha.
Recently I decided I really need to unpack and display all my movies again. This aluminum shelf would be tempting even on my tight budget, but as a renter, I can't drill into my walls. Your video did remind me of those rotating shelves you were using, though, so I think I'll use those, at least until I can move into a more permanent space.

Those are nice. I gave up trying to find quality shelves and built my own (8' high, wall-to-wall on two walls, adjustable, sturdy and anchored). They don't hold all my discs (about 3/4 worth). I used 8'x6" whiteboard (hardwood was just too expensive!) for the sides, top, bottom, and top and center cross beams (used square and T brackets on the bottom back instead of a cross beam, so the shelves can stand out from the baseboard, but still touch the walls), 1/8" and 1/4" plywood for the shelf boards (thicker ones for TV boxed sets which are more densely packed than movies), 1/8" hardboard for the backs, and shelf pins to make them adjustable. I used adhesive felt strips on the back over the screws and brackets to protect the walls and baseboard.

Bookmarking these for later. Currently I'm someone who is 25 years old and because of my work I constantly move all the time every 6 months or so and only have storage space for whatever I own to fit in a honda civic. Because of this my about 450 discs worth of my physical media collection are mainly all stored in binders and the empty cases are in storage bins in my parents attic across the country.
Once I am able to find a stable job and living situations, I will definitely consider buying one of these shelving units if they are still being sold in like 3-4 years from now. I just want to be able to proudly display all my physical media by then, but for now I am stuck with binders unfortunately.

      @weldonyoung1013 10 месяцев назад

Hello @ebinrock , I decided to come back to this comment and replace it. I have use a Prepac shelf - the Slim Barrister Tower, a single width. As far as particale board style shelves go they are very good. No voids or delamination.
After I got one I started looking for more. In my area they are not possible to get.
If you get the Barrister style be aware the last disc case on each end of a shelf can only be removed if another is taken out of a full row. Also, with wider shelfing in the Barrister type there is a strip that is wider at each division that can hide some titles.
And if you want to improve you shelving from any manufacturer, replace the tack type nails holding on the back with #4 screws 1/2 to 3/4 inch long (do drill 1/16" pilot hole for those). Secondly, get some plastic (push-in or screw-in type) feet to slide the shelf around on (will protect from clean water too, preventing the corners from deteriorating).

If I knew I wasn’t moving or going anywhere tho then a custom built in is definitely the way to go.

Seems sturdy but I don’t really like the design with the shelf supports a different colour and sticking out 🫤
I own 4 particle board based media shelves by a brand called Artiss. They have adjustable shelves. Mine came laminated with chestnut brown laminate. And each unit is about 1 metre wide and 2 metres tall. Resulting in about 9 shelves per unit which you can adjust to suit Blu-rays, DVDs or CDs. Once setup and against the wall, they are sturdy and safe, and in the exact same condition as when I bought them (5yrs ago) - no breakage. If you look after them they last forever.
I did not need to screw anything to the walls for them as each one has a wide base ensuring it can never tip or anything. So I put soft felt pads on the top of the back of each unit to ensure there is no minor wall rub over the years.
Each unit costs about AU$150 on eBay. And the end result looks expensive, and all dark brown. But I believe they come in a variety of shades.

Awesome shelves dude! Just bought a cheap particle board shelf with a fairly attractive oak finish. Not ideal, but I got tired of hunting for the ideal, I’ve just got stacks of Blu-rays that need a home. Maybe someday I’ll be cool like you and get something stable and lasting like this… and a place to put them, heh.
Also why’s your TV so HIGH!? Haha 😄 Would not like looking up to watch a movie. Straight ahead for me. (I know, ideals aren’t always possible.)
Now I gotta go figure out how to put this stupid shelf together… bleh. lol

I built mine with a 1x6x6 pine wood a for about $45 each and it the same amount of one of those so if I make 3 of them ill will be around 145 and is sturdy. Sorry but that’s a lot a money for shelf’s they look nice but I will never pay that much for a shelf.
I even made my vinyl record shelf with a threaded rod and are amazing and adjustable .
I’m really thinking on making all my movies digital and get rid off the cases put them on my shed and put the movies on selves in a box. And keep my space for my records.
    But is just me.
    Good video!

How about this idea… the wider shelf set with the top half as a SteelBook display (flat sheet of metal with a pre positioned magnets and a material cover) and then the normal shelf storage on the bottom? Even better an included top shelf with a lighting system to light up the display????

Custom bookcase works really well. Lot less expensive you can build it better than you can buy it. Yeah I'll never buy anything made of particular board. A lot of furniture is made of that and you still have to put it together. Might as well build it like you want with better material. If you are handy with woodworking.

Very nice Jeff. Looks great. I've got a bunch of framing aluminum T-channels, about 6footers I grabbed from work when we tore out a section of the factory. I was going to make a couple shop tables out of it, but damn, now you got me thinking. I grabbed a bunch of corresponding brackets and sliding screws and such, I could rip out my RUclips 2x4s and 1inch strapping wall shelf and extend with these. I don't have any aluminum shelfs though. I'd need to take a trip to homedepot. Damn you Jeff, you got me thinking lol.....shop table or DVD shelf....grrrr...hehe.

My friend had a video up on Facebook and her house caught on fire and everyone's life insurance claim was revoked and tied up in courts for nearly a decade and she lost even more in court fees. Her husband and 2 young children couldn't get out of the basement because the window was shown in the video to be blocked by a heavy gun safe that was since bolt in the floor and they thought it would be smart to put it in front of the basement window. Of course if you have an incident I'm sure you can just rip down those shelves.

Finding a good way to store my precious discs isn‘t easy. I like how well done and stable these shelves look, but I‘d never use something open, since you have to clean them regularly so they don‘t collect dust. Also, which maybe isn‘t a problem in your room, since it doesn‘t seem to have windows, I don‘t think that permanent sun exposure is good for longevity of the discs.

These look like they'd work really well for me, maybe no more than 1500 titles. Don't look like they'd rust or degrade - and at first I wondered why they had such short shelves, but it makes sense, they can keep material & shipping cost down by not having to build long shelves that might sag over time anyway. Thanks for this video, the first system I've seen that looks like it might be worth the $$ for me. I'll likely be using your coupon sometime before June

I have around 450 movies contained in 4 small bookcase units which cost £10 ($12/$13) each. They look decent and do the job very well. I can't fathom spending huge sums of money on shelving; that's money better spent on films!
