I just beat it yesterday. Working on intergrade dlc. I haven't played the original or know anything about original 7. But this just might be my favorite game ever story wise. And top 5 gameplay wise. I'm so excited to play crisis core reunion after intergrade and then rebirth
I think the amazing thing about this, is that it could be about all of it. Cloud, Tifa , Aerith, Zack, even Barret. For that reason I dont believe it is about them specifically but about the story that is Final Fantasy VII.

However I believe that Sephiroths ability to control cloud is going to be MUCH stronger then in the orginal and rather then Sephiroth killing her, Cloud controlled by Sephiroth will kill Aerith Just a hunch but playing the remake I noticed that scenes were in the orginal Zacks consciousness or persona that was guiding cloud. For instance when he first landed unconscious in Aeriths church Those scenes now have been deliberately changed where it is overtly sephiroth talking to Cloud. There were multiple instances where Cloud had to be stopped from outright executing people (Tifa stopped cloud from killing Johnny and The whispers directly had to intervene to stop him from killing Reno) I think whatever Sephiroth has done, had diminished the effect Zacks imprint has on cloud leaving him more susceptible to him And let’s be honest, the only thing that Sephiroth would enjoy more then the torment of killing Aerith in front of Cloud……is forcing Cloud to kill Aerith

Play the original FF7. Remake is a reinterpretation which is already going in a very different direction from the original. FF7R and it's second and third parts aren't remakes despite the title. Your questions are answered in OG FF7.

Its about all three. The most face value is Aerith. Level 2 is Zack, and I think this is the most poignant take. Level 3 is its Aerith or Zack to Zack or Aerith. Level 4 is its (the real) Cloud to Tifa before he stops drowning in his lost sense of self. The reality is that Nobuo Uetmatsu is an absolute genius artist and this song is his love letter to one of the titles he will be remembered for for hundreds of years.
It's really about everyone around him that died. Remember it all started with sephiroph killing his mom and mist his town. Don't think it's on a certain level. It's all of them.
