    You don’t have to be vegetarian to help! Simply lowering your meat consumption to 2-3 times a week can drastically lower your environmental footprint. You will be healthier too!

      I'd like to go vegetarian, heck, I have such a soft spot for animals that I almost cry if I kill a cow in Minecraft for the leather, but in the real world, bacon is the only thing stopping me.
      Edit: I'm trying to go as a selective vegetarian, aka choosing to not eat meat if there is a choice, but not flat-out refusing it if it's the only thing on the plate. I live in a place where it's rather hard to find good-tasting vegetarian restaurants, so that is a bit of an issue. I do try, though!

    I've been a vegetarian for 4 years now. Why did I switch over? I was just really grossed out by how animals are cared for-injected with hormones (to grow a larger animal=more meat) and animal antibiotics. I don't trust our food industry, because it's also a business that needs to maximize profits. If you don't see for yourself how your food is handled, you really don't know what goes into it.

Then, this past summer I was visiting Europe, and by day I explored the country, and by night I researched and watched videos about the truth of dairy and eggs, and how they are equal to meat in their horror. I had started drinking soymilk a few months before, but that was partially because I just kind of liked soymilk, and I knew the production of dairy wasn't great, I just didn't realize how bad it was.

      @@ClosetDemon I'm in Australia, so I'm not sure the price situation where you are, here the cheapest good quality meat in supermarkets is the wild culled kangaroo meat. I know overseas kangaroo meat is ridiculously expensive (price gouging, since they know people will pay high prices for it because it's so healthy, nothing to do with production/transport costs) but I think it's likely you will find with some searching that local pest/overpopulated species are actually comparable with regular meat prices, have you looked? If not, try googling for "buy game meat", " buy venison", "buy wild pig meat" or "buy kangaroo" & then search the websites that appear with those searches to see the starting prices. You might be surprised at how affordable it is!
      You can also try to get in contact with hunters in your area & buy directly from them for a cheap option.
      Last resort, raise your own :) Probably not viable for large animals, but insects are completely viable even in an apartment. You can buy mealworms or crickets from local pet stores & find instructions online on how to raise them & prepare them for human consumption. If your parents can afford the game meat but are refusing, then if you insist on the alternative of eating home raised crickets, they might find they are willing to spend the money on eating deer to avoid eating your bugs :)).
      Note on game meats, because it's so low in fat, it cannot be cooked to well done! It must be eaten rare or minced or it will taste horrible! The flavours are generally similar to, but stronger than beef & other domestic meats, so it's great in any dish that needs an extra meaty flavour boost, such as in burgers, where the flavour's diluted by the other ingredients, or in curries & other strong flavoured dishes. You can, if you really want to, use a little less of it than you would with beef in some settings, due to it's stronger flavour, so that might be another selling point for your parents too :)) Good luck on the negotiations with them :)

I think eating bugs is just fine but my mom and especially dad would be revolted. @lilaclizard4504 5 лет назад +4

      @@ClosetDemon _"I think eating bugs is just fine but my mom and especially dad would be revolted."_ hmm well if you want to have some fun..... lol.
      You can buy insect flours that can be added to foods & your parents would probably not notice in small amounts & if gradually raised, learn to enjoy it, but they cost a fortune (as in over $100 per kilo!) but more fun than that is going to be what you can do if you raise your own. Meal worms are the easiest all round, they can be readily bought from any pet store that caters to pet reptiles. To raise them & breed them needs only a take away food container with a few holes in it for ventilation & some oats flakes (I think that's what you call them? the ones you make porridge with) that they wil live in & eat & then a tiny piece of carrot or other scrap vegetable every few days to act as their water source. They're actually quite interesting to raise anyway, going through 4 distinct stages of life, so that might help get your mum to agree or not get suspicious when you buy them :).
      Anyway, once you've got your mealworms growing, find a large one that's just shed it's skin & so is nice & soft & slip it into a frying pan while your mum's frying something :)))))) It will come out nice & crunchy & edible for you, but give your parents a heart attack lol. I'd love to hear what you think their reaction ot that would be, but I'm thinking it might make them receptive to alternate meats to stop you putting bugs in their food lol
      _"I'm afraid that until my brother gets his hunting license, or that one of our friends starts hunting"_ well at least you have an option down the track then :) If they're going to be ok with eating the hunted food then, can you use that to see if you can get them to be ok with it now? Pointing out to them that for your brother to have income options as a hunter, you need to be paying hunters for their catches now, or at least see if you can maybe convince them to buy hunted meat at least once to try it before your brother goes to the effort of getting his hunting licence. Maybe see if you can get your brother on board with this too?
      If all of this fails, try grass fed beef or bison. Your parents can hopefully be convinced to go with that by telling them the health benefits of it, but raised well, it's actually really good for the environment & there's a lot of farmers around the world actually using well managed livestock to restore land. Game meats are still better, but if you can find well managed beef or other ruminant meat, it's still a pretty good option all round. Here's a couple of videos on how it can be raised & the positive impact possible ruclips.net/video/vpTHi7O66pI/видео.html & ruclips.net/video/q7pI7IYaJLI/видео.html more & more grass fed/grass finished beef is being raised that way, so just buying grass fed will support that, or to guarantee it's done that way, go with certified organic. They have reward systems in place that almost guarantee all their producers have switched to that system. If price isn't an issue, but keeping the same food as always is, that could be the easiest option to get your parents onto.
      This stuff always works better with baby steps :) A small but consistent change is far better & more meaningful than a drastic change that only lasts for a short time before returning to old habits :) Anyway good luck with your parents, I'm sure you'll manage at least something with them sooner or later..... even if it takes until you are an adult & inviting them to your home for fresh game meat dinners :)

    • @sugarkitty2008

      cannibalising is a bit far. if anything, we'd start hunting things like rabbits, pigeons and deer. however, if the ammount of people doing this is too large, these wild animals would face extinction. hence the lifestock, which is bred and slautered to keep up with the demand.
      the reason we have grown to such large numbers is due to farming and having no preditors to keep numbers down. in the natural world, carnivors starve to death if their food source is too low from over hunting. allowing prey numbers to rise. the cycle repeats.
      being omnivores, we would still have plants to sustain us as the prey numbers go down, so we'd just wipe them out 1 by 1. moving through every animal species. untill we are eating bugs for meat. only then would cannibalism be something to consider. but by then all animals would be extinct and the worlds ecosystem would have crumbled. wiping us out anyway.
      i may have overthought this and gone to far. after all, lifestock would surely come back way before it got super out of hand.

    • @lilaclizard4504

      well if they're hard to convince, maybe you could switch to eating more ethical meat - insects. Ask them to take you to a pet store & buy some crickets or meal worms & find how to breed them on the internet & then offer them up to your mum while she's preparing dinner (still alive) & tell her "I see your point now & have decided I will agree to continue eating ethical meats as long as you join me.... here you go, I grew you dinner :)"
      Bet she lets you go vegetarian then :)) Please be careful though & don't go vegan, it's not sustainable or good for animals or your health! meats like insect flours & wild animals killed to protect crops (wild pigs & deer) are much better to eat than vegan is! (and "cricket flour" can be purchased from amazon & various places btw, but it is expensive. Adding that to vegetarian or vegan dishes will give you all the nutrients & proteins you need from meat, with far less environmental costs than by eating plant foods)

      Personally, I don't think farm animals will disappear, because I doubt that all of humanity will ever go vegan. Ideally, as more people go vegan, fewer animals will be bred and/or factory farms will have better conditions for the animals to live in. So in that hypothetical scenario, as the demand for meat decreases, animals won't be bred at the same rate they're killed, and their number will go down overall.
      I hope I could help you :)

Also educate yourself on how farm animals are "made" by humans, this is NOT the natural way, so slowly the numbers of these spezies will normalize as humans dont manipulate for their pleasure anymore. And also with the farm animals that noone would eat (in a fully Veggie World) imagine how kids could go and learn about them, taking care, spend time outside and take care of them in like school projects and so on... Also with elders or volounteers. Hope this draws an epic future picture :-))

    While the entire word going vegetarian would obviously help the environment, it's not exactly realistic (at least right away). People who are set in there ways aren't likely to drastically change their lifestyle overnight. A more achievable goal would be to reduce our meat intake gradually over time, particularly beef which is the most harmful to the environment. Also, you kinda missed the fact that even if the world went vegetarian, animal agriculture wouldn't disappear due to the still existing production/demand of animal products like eggs and milk (although it definitely would shrink a lot). Great video though, such a fascinating and important issue (:

    • @bebopssbu7696
      @bebopssbu7696 8 лет назад +4

      True, but since the mass scale production of meat by the meat industry leads to mass animal agriculture, which is the problem like you said. Cutting down on meat consumption would still help the environment due to the demand of meat decreasing, which would decrease meat production, which would decrease animal agriculture, etc etc. Sorry if I sound jumbled I'm in a rush while writing this, hope I made sense.

      COmpletely the other way around. Cows consume 14x the calories that humans consume.This requires more land to grow food, whetehr it be grain or grass-fed. It would be more fficient to eat plants directly than to feed them to an animal, considering that animals waste those nutrients moving, pooping, and reproducing.

    I think people should just eat less meat. Not necessarily going vegetarian or vegan. Exemple if you just eat meat once or twice a week istead of 2 or 3 times a day that would make a huge difference without being too "extreme" for people to do. I feel like people in general only see two options; being a hardcore vegetarian or a hardcore meat eater. Anyway its never been natural for humans (except a few cultures) to eat meat every day. People can afford that now only because of refrigeration exists.I think meat should be in like only the special(s) meals. Also what I hate is the way we treat animals now. Farmers now use cruel "techniques" to make meat tender or better tasting, because an old cow is just not enough anymore. When my father was young, they only ate chickens or cows when they were really old and about to die. Okay the meat was not as tender as now but at least it was not veals they kept in a small box so they can hardly move and feed them only with milk wich is really bad for them, or to stuff ducks untill they vomit to make their liver fatter. The big problem now is in the mentality I think. People don't know anymore that meat is a dead animal. They just don't know how it feels like to kill an animal to eat. All the commercials around us talk about meat like it grows on trees. Like a smiling chicken on a box of nuggets or things like "bio pig", but in the end it is just the same cruel techniques used to respond to the way too heavy demand

    I'm a vegetarian and although I'm not against people eating meat because I'm doing it for my own reasons, In my opinion people (at least in the US) should reduce the amount of meat they consume. Not due to any personal reasons such as factory farming, but because meat is becoming one of the biggest issues for heath issues because of how much we consume. Meat is alright in a balanced diet, but increasing the amount we eat as much as we would eat grains, fruits, and vegetables, that's a huge health risk and why heart problems are so often and risky in our country.
    I'm just saying my opinion, you don't have to stop eating meat but be careful how much you consume. It really could save your life.

      Skylar Adrianna good for you! It's great to hear about new vegans who are noticing changes for the better in themselves, as well as helping out the environment and the animals (or course)!
      One thing, just be careful that you're getting enough iron (I'm a vegan gal myself) and if you're a female who has her period, you lose blood! This means you need more iron than boys your age. Don't forget to eat lots of leafy greens, beans and other iron rich foods, as well as getting enough vitamin C (it helps for iron absorption)! Be careful of synthetic supplements, though. They can be dangerous. Maybe if you're worried you're not getting enough, just try and incorporate more foods like I mentioned into your diet. If you notice symptoms of anaemia, maybe talk to your doctor or get a blood haemoglobin test!
      Good luck!

    • @lilaclizard4504

      easiest solution is kangaroo meat, ALL kangaroos are wild & killed by a bullet to their head where they stand in the wild, purely for population control to prevent them dying of starvation.
      Deer is often killed in the same way, although some can be farmed, so check before eating
      organic standards are higher with animal welfare than regular
      grass fed is not as high, but for cows is generally pretty good. "free range" on chickens ususally means nothing & because they're small & can't fight back, chickens are frequently abused, cows not so much. Pigs are also housed horribly indoors on metal
      So there are options for better animal welfare, but gee I wish we could all work together to close all factory farms! There ARE alternatives! Look at this system, ruclips.net/video/ZP_tR4FNx3E/видео.html just as productive as feedlots, but clearly nicer for the cows

    • @jacklinkaur3088
      @jacklinkaur3088 6 лет назад +17

      Lilac Lizard Actually cows are treated horribly too. Their abuse is equal to the other animals (chicken, pig, sheep, etc)

    • @lilaclizard4504
      @lilaclizard4504 6 лет назад +2

      Jacklin, not really because if you hurt a cow, it will kick you & make your life hell, while chickens can do nothing & their bones are easier to break.
      Nowadays most grass fed cows are in intensive managed rotational grazing systems, where they are moved everyday. If the farmer abuses them, it makes his life hell. Completely forgetting all welfare issues, farmers want to treat cows kindly so their job is easier.
      Why do you say their abuse is equal? what's that based on?

    I was vegan for 5 years. The hardest part was the constant daily jokes/harassment from fools who couldn't handle my dietary preferences. I mean, I heard the same lame jokes several times every day, wtf is up with that. They complained that vegans were preachy, I never was, while they would mock and jeer literally all the time.
    Also barbecued boar sausages are the shit, so yeah, no more veganism. Not to mention that being healthily vegan is pretty expensive in the developing world (currently residing in Brazil). I don't support factory farming. I only eat hunted meat, and no dairy, or I'll accept meat given to me by friends or family. The biggest problem in the world is overpopulation, something society doesn't want to face up to. Less people = less material consumption = a more balanced world. Not to mention we'll stop crowding out the rest of the animals we share the planet with.

      yeh, sadly despite the claims of ethical eating, it's more of a cult & really not nice people - at least for the vegans, vegetarians are normally nice, but I'm guessing you ended up in vegan land for that negative response you got?
      Try genuinely vegetarian communities rather than vegan ones, or "ethical eaters" who may be vegetarian or may also include insects & sustainable meats in their diet. They tend to be much nicer & more supportive people :) permaculture, homesteaders, sustainable living people all tend to be doing what they are cause they're caring people & as such they'll support people too.
      Did you get your questions answered in the end & get your issues sorted? If not, what's still causing you problems? & kind of you to support others :)

      Reptilian Brotherhood , black beans and rice are your friend. I love making soups and home made breads. ( check out my soups on my channel) Smoothies and fresh juices rock! A local co-op may be pricy...but they can inspire vegan/vegetarian dishes for when you go shopping at winco like me. Vanilla soy is my favorite milk substitute. but tastes vary. I avoid the fake meat products. they are overly processes and are way to loaded with junk.
      I do indulge, but consider them junk food.
      In my humbol opinion I would say "follow your heart not your stomach". Your body Will follow in time. Mine took 3 months to get into the groove. I felt hungry for about a month starting out. ( the hunger/heart burn is just heavy acids producing in your gut to digest meat that isn't there....you always feel hungry until those secretions subside in the lack of animal protiens) After that perioud, I had a craving for a lot of new things! It's quite a revolation! After the first week your body is in the fight or flight stage("where's the beef!!!") and starts to burn calories hard! I had mad energy for months, and still do. I went from a type "B" personality to a type"A" overnight!
      Eat often , eat small amounts, keep active. stay connected with other vegetarians and keep a positive circle of inspiration to modivate you. you have already done the hard part.....making your mind up.
      For whatever your reason to go veggie, and not supporting the industry, I say -"cheers!"

    Ok so I’m a learning to be a dairy farmer 👩🏼‍🌾 although I fully accept that people do have other opinions and I am more than happy to accept that.
    In fact, if any of you guys can think of a better way to do dairy then please do tell so I can put my ideas forward and try make my local farms more welfare friendly 😊

    • @lilaclizard4504
      @lilaclizard4504 5 лет назад +2

      Look up Alan Savory & holistic grazing & then look into more practical applications of that in dairy. That's not so much for cow welfare, but rather for the welfare of the planet. It's unlikely you'd have the control to be able to implement when you're just starting out, but still interesting to learn about :) In theory, you would divide the farm into about 60-90 long, thin paddocks with a run down the middle & the milking shed in the middle of it all.
      Cows would travel to the milking shed & then that paddock would be closed off & a different paddock opened, where they would spend the day eating, then they'd make their way back to the milking shed & that paddock would be closed off & another opened & they return to that one & so on, therefore giving them just 1 day per paddock & the rest of the land 60 or so days or uninterrupted growing, resulting in lush, long grass & mass carbon sequestration due to matching long roots. Paddocks would only be small, only big enough to have enough grass for 1 day's food, which means that they also get completely covered in manure by the end of the day, therefore providing a blanket of natural fertiliser over everything.
      There is an additional option to add layer chickens into the same land too, wait 3-4 days after teh cows ahve left the paddock & then tow in a trailer set up to be full of chickens & their nests & sleeping perches (move them each night while they're in there sleeping) to feast on the maggots breeding in the manure & break it up & add to it in the process :) Extra profit, no extra land or resources needed :)
      Anyway, enjoy your farming :) I'm really just suggesting the above as something to look at & learn about, but not something you will realisticly have any ability to implement for a very long time, if ever, but you might be able to find smaller methods to improve the land based on that, but overall, just enjoy your new vocation :) It's rare nowadays for people not born on farms to choose to go into farming, you're doing a great service to humanity & don't let those that won't do the work you are going to tell you otherwise!

    • @ellieking4548
      @ellieking4548 5 лет назад +2

      Lilac Lizard. Thank you so much!! I've heard of something similar to that before and it is a really interesting set up that can be learnt from. At the moment most people are using around two larger fields and just walking the cattle across each day; for example, they would be in one field between morning and afternoon milking and moved to another field for the evening/following morning so they'd also have a variety of enrichments and less walking during the day when their rumens are active. Grazing methods are definitely a topic that I'd like for everyone to gain a better knowledge in ( including myself) so that new methods can be discovered such as patch grazing which you were talking about. Again thank you so much and I'll definitely look further in to it.

    • @doggyrobbie0
      @doggyrobbie0 8 лет назад +6

      I agree. I just mean that it is silly to only like vegans or vegetarians who are vegan or vegetarian because of health benefits. Because this doesn't really affect anyone else besides themself. The ethicality part affects lots of animals. And the environmental aspect affects everyone and everything on this planet. I do not disagree with going vegan or vegetarian for health benefits, or have anything against people who have done so, I just think it is ridiculous to discredit vegans or vegetarians who did it for the environment or the animals. And the animals and environment are saved by going vegan or vegetarian regardless the reason...

    They missed a couple things: 1. we use antibiotics on farm animals because they act like growth hormones (ex. fat chickens). This results in antibiotic resistant infections in domestic and wild animals AND in humans. 2. Animal farming creates toxic runoffs that pour into the ocean or wetlands (swine feces has killed off fish species in US rivers!). 3. the genetically selected breeds of farm animals are susceptible to human like disease (avian flu, swine flu). 4. fishing is threatening the genetic diversity of fish stocks in oceans/rivers and destabilizing the ecosystems. 5. the total quantity of suffering in the world is *higher* because the 20 billion chickens are genetically mutated, suffering creatures awaiting death. They grow so quickly they get kidney failure, broken legs, ruptured spinal discs. They eat food lacking in nutrition and get infections that cause septic wounds.

    I used to be that guy who would tease vegetarians. I thought I'd never become one myself and give up meat just because it was too tasty. But that was the only reason I was eating it. Having a dog has taught me a lot about animal intelligence. My dog definitely feels all the same things as I do. Pain, joy, sadness, anger. One day i decided to open mindedly accept what I saw in a documentary without my mental meat loving barrier up. Discovering that pigs are more intelligent than dogs really made me start to see more clearly. I saw pigs in cages so small they couldn't even turn around, and piglets getting castrated without any anesthetics. And I could see the fear in their eyes and hear their screams. I saw the same fear in cows as well. I imagined for a moment, what if that was my dog in there with a thousand others just like him. From there I just decided that taste wasn't a worthy enough reason for me to continue eating meat. I've drastically reduced the consumption of diary products over time and it seems that a vegan lifestyle is not as bad as it once appeared.

      Star Cherry but not as much, not even close. To produce meat, we use up so much more resources. Ofc its best if we dont take in milk or eggs at all, but as a half vegan myself its hard tbh, since we are exposed to food that contain these ingredients everyday, so lets start by cutting down meat, from your original amount to half of it, and slowly into none, I mean if you are interested to become vegetarian ofc.

      It depends. Some vegetarians consider the eggs part of the animal and like meat so they dont eat it, but some considering more dairy like and do eat it. I am the former

      @maxinecaulfield5988 7 лет назад +3

      Miaa MSP You can get protein from beans. And yes, animals do exist for a reason, but can you tell me what that reason is? No, it isn't to be eaten. It's like for humans - to reproduce and spread their genes. _Not_ to be eaten. Animals have emotions too, you know, and it just isn't ethical to kill them when they're here for the same reasons as us.

      I didnt said that. There is still in world places where you will be stabbed by human and be cooked or eated raw.
      Also I lived at farm. We didnt rape animals. The cow breeds are very different and its unnecessary to "rape" some specific cows.

    Take it from someone who used to eat meat on almost every meal: Being vegetarian is easy. One or two weeks until you get used to it mentally and physically and that's it! Afterwards it's just like any other day, except this time you sleep better at night and you're leading a healthy lifestyle!
    Also for those of you who want to loose weight fast, go vegetarian for one month, thank me later.

    I don't think eating meat is wrong or bad but the amount we consume as Americans is just too much. We will literally eat two, three or four kind of meats in one sitting, we put it in our veggies, we will eat three square meals a day with meat. I don't think humans were meant to eat as much meat as we do and I think we're overloading our digestive systems.
