I love Coleus mixed with other plants in the 2 planters on my front porch steps, but it is so expensive! I started some from seed several days ago, but didn't know they grew this slow. At least I will know for next year.
Guys, don't press seeds into soil with your fingers, especially when soil is dry. Seeds will stick to your fingertips and it's a mess. Hold your spray bottle at least 3ft away and mist them until surface is damp. I leave seeds like coleus/calibrachoa/snapdragon on surface, but if you want to cover you can then sprinkle with very fine, dry soil and do another round of misting.
I’ve noticed that you put your trays in aluminum baking tins. I’ve read that aluminum can alter soil ph. Is this accurate? I’m not planting in the tins, just using them as drip trays and for bottom watering for my solo cups. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn’t setting up my seedlings for failure. Thank you so much for your videos and all your knowledge. I’m a faithful follower
Great video, thanks so much! A lot of helpful tips! Just one question I was curious about. Have you ever heard that changing the ph deliberately will brighten up the colors? I was watching a diy show a while back, & I remembered that one of the hosts had planted transplanted a full grown coleus plant & gave a tip to bury a rusty nail to change the ph in the dirt & that would really bring out the colors?? Have you heard of this method, is there any truth to it? Would love to know! Thanks so much.
At what stage should I take them away from my grow light and what's the best environment for them to continue growing most of them I'm growing are for indoors. Thanks
I planted 3 120 trays of those this Spring and they didn't come up. I think it was too cold for them, although it shouldn't have been; I didn't get my Heuchera either, so now I'm really determined. My petunias came up, and everything else did well, but those and Arizona Gaillardia. That one is a puzzle.
They like the warmth. If you have space to keep the protected indoors it depends how big you want them. You want to start them 8-10 weeks before the last frost date in your area. If you dont really have room to keep them inside about 8-10 weeks before the night stay around 50.
Hi Gary QUESTION…… Approximately how many of your white cups would it take to do a 12 to 14 inch container? I’ve never grown before, so I’m not familiar with them but I’m very excited to try it this year And thank you always for all your helpful info

Hi!, a quick question, after we plant the seeds how often do we water them and how much? Then when we see something poke through how so we water them at that time? Thanks so much 😊
thank you i needed this tutorial, yesterday i've purchased a coleus seeds pack (color mix) from a house&gardening supermarket (Dedeman) and the pack has 0.5 grams and cost me 2.5 RON ( $0.63) . When i got back at home i've planted the seeds indoor and hopefully will get some nice plants..i've heard that this plant grows very fast . To bad it's annual si i guess in the fall will die. At least coleus seeds are bigger than the petunia seeds..i hate small seeds :)) (because of small germination/survival rate) Monday i'm gonna purchase a wild strawberry seeds pack (fragaria vesca) to try few in a pot or 2. I guess it's not to late to sow wild-strawberries and i could get some to harvest ? I've heard these can keep producing until late fall ..Also another question, if i make wild strawberries plants from seeds, how to save the roots alive for next year, over the winter ? (there is no wild-strawberries roots to buy, only for normal strawberries so i have to start from seeds)
You didn't mention how often to water at each stage. Is it just a case of wait till the soil seems dry then add water or is it more consistent like every other day while they're growing from seeds and every day when they're moved to the cups...
brother I like your video please tell me which soil use for seeds germination and temperature. .. but I try so many times for seeds germinate. .. no seed will grow
Last year I had the pink and lime green mix of flowers I bought, I saved the seeds and planted them about 6 weeks ago, they are green, no pretty foliage, are they still young and do they look better once outdoors?
hello Gary. I've been growing veg for a few years and do pretty well with them. Want to grow some flower to brighten up the front yard for my wife. We live in New England and the flowers I want to grow are Bachelor Buttons, Cosmos, Aster, Marigold, Snapdragon and Zinnia. The packages all say "Outdoor Planting Dates" of April-June. Would I be ok if I started them now or is it to late for this year? Was planning on using the paper towel method for germination. Don't have a heating pad so can I just use my homemade grow light? Ty, Jack
Jack Yep, start them now. I dont think you need to germinate first as the all grow really well. Save some time and just put them in the starting mix. The grow light should do nicely. But I also recommend putting the seed outside during the day when young as the sun will help them.
Damn it ! I wish I saw this sooner. I planted these bad boys today but I kinda burried them and only put 2 seeds in each pocket .. do you think it will work out ?
I think it will. Seeds are pretty impressive. They want to grow. Check out the new MFVG/BULK Tab on my seed shop. Greatly discounted seed packages for those that follow My First Vegetable Garden. www.therustedgarden.com

How many weeks do you bottom water your plants? When do you begin to top water them? Do you wait until you transplant them into the ground or large container?
Gary Pilarchik I have never heard of these before this year. They look pretty cool and I like how you never know what they will look like and if you get a really cool looking one you can name it and clone it forever. I have over 200 growing now with two tiny leaves. I didn't even push them down I just sprinkled a bunch right on top and when they sprouted used an eye glass screwdriver to pick them right off the surface and put them in their own cells. it worked really good. I filled a bunch of those plastic cells most of the way with cheap topsoil and the very top with that special seed starting soil.

In Ireland i have grown the same coleus plant for three years. I eventually used it as a mother plant as they are very easy to root from slips.

Those lil plants are adorable. I cannot wait untill mine germinate.

Slow yes but once you give them outdoor warm temps they take off.
Good to know, thanks Gary!

most of what you say in this video about how to treat coleus is can go for most other members of the mint family which is like over 3500 plants.
Another pretty plant I had never heard about! :O I loved it. Thanks for sharing!
The coleus is a great annual for leaf color and interest.
Yeah, I loved the leaves! They made me want to touch them, hahaha. ;)

That is a puzzle. Did the stay to damp perhaps and mold or rot. Would be a stretch though.
How many days for coleus to sprout?
very interesting ....I like this flower ..
dare42615 It is a great annual. Very easy to grow and it adds interest to your planting beds.
how do i separate my coleus seedlings
fantastic tutorial. I am in Chicago. When should I start coleus indoors?

+Sandeep Sachdeva 75+ degrees Fahrenheit. I use store bought seed starting mix. Any kind should work.
Last year I had the pink and lime green mix of flowers I bought, I saved the seeds and planted them about 6 weeks ago, they are green, no pretty foliage, are they still young and do they look better once outdoors?
Not sure what happened. They could have been hybrid plants and the seeds dont always look like the plant you collected them from.
Thank you so much! 🌱🌱🌱

how long did it take for ur cloeus seed to come up i planted some and they haven,t come up yet
A bit 10-14 days.
I placed a plastic wrap over the cups and they came up in 2 days! :) Also the temperature was around 26.5 C (79.7 F) ~ hope this helps.
nice vedio..
Thanks
What did the colors end up looking like?
You know they stayed pretty true to the video. I think the color would have varied more with a bit more shade outdoors.
Gary Pilarchik I have never heard of these before this year. TheTubeTempest Thats a good technique. The are the best foliage plant out there I think.
I don’t understand why you put so many seeds in one container. Do you thin them out at some point?
Some I dividee and thin. Others, I just leave and the strongest take off. Nature drops seeds like that.
i have seeds of coleus. please tell me the soil for germenat?
+Sandeep Sachdeva Heat. I grow them indoors and they are slow to germinate but the like warmth. 80 + degrees F for those.
Yo I got mine for 20 cents. Do they make good companion plants for cannabis?
Hmm. I don't know.
Devin was here, and they do not grow fast
