  • Today I unbox my dream Cartier-a watch I recently scored for an absolute bargain-and take a look at the brand's fascinating cultural impact, history, industry achievements, and how they created the world's first truly iconic luxury watch over 100 years ago.
    With luxury watches from brands like Rolex, Patek, Audemars Piguet, and other brands becoming so expensive and overhyped with queues just to buy them, and some even in short supply, there are better options out there. In this video I share 6 reasons why the Cartier Santos holds its own against other in-demand watches, along with the best places to buy, and sweet spots in the used market. Is this the best value luxury watch in 2022?

    Congrats, TGV! I wanted to share with you that I purchased my dream watch-the Tudor BB58 blue-for my high school graduation. After seeing your review of it, and watching your videos for a few years now, I saved for two years and bought it on bracelet a couple weeks ago. Now I’m wearing it on the original NDC strap. I hope I can share some photos of it with you, as seeing your videos definitely inspired me to start collecting. Cheers, take care!

    I’m noticing a lot of collectors getting into brands like Cartier. To me it shows that collectors have had enough of Rolex and are looking elsewhere for their luxury purchases, after all watch collecting is not all about Rolex hype.

    • @j.l.7264
      @j.l.7264 Год назад

      @@oscarosullivan4513 this is such a random statement though, aside from panerai, which Swiss brand isn’t finished to the same degree? They all are. The people who takes any chance to make the same old complaint about Rolex availability are beating a dead horse. If you want one then get on the list and wait, if you don’t then don’t bother. It’s that simple. You never waste money on getting a substitute, because you will never get what you wanted at the start. The watch market is in a bubble right now and I think everyone will soon realize why Rolex had such a good value retention history while other brands don’t.

      Rolex still holds a significant place in the world of watches. But Rolex is no longer "the" watch brand. Who wants to be on a waiting list for 2+ years for a Rolex, when you can go and buy a watch from brands such as Cartier or Omega, and not have to be on a waiting list for them.

    • @rafaeloliva6425
      @rafaeloliva6425 2 месяца назад

      Perhaps some folks are put off due to low Rolex model availability. However, people will jump at the opportunity to buy one, given the chance. I own more than one rolex and are staples in my watch collection. People, dislike the difficulty acquiring Rolexes more popular models. Yet, once they posses one they appreciate why they are so very sought after.
      The Cartier Santos large, especially with the classic white dial is an amazing and versatile watch! With the black alligator strap I've rocked both suits and tuxes with no problem. On the steel braclet, it is casual yet classy, wearing a lien shirt and slacks.
      It truly a niche watch who's versatility is truly hard to match at any price point.

      I was thinking, being unable to see the automatic/mechanical movement of a watch which has a solid case back, it really doesn't make a big difference as to whether it's a quartz or mechanical movement (other than occasionally having to replace a battery, at which time only a jeweler sees it - or you see it if you replace your own batteries).

The design is what I like and if the price is right being quartz isn’t an issue. It’s also worth noting Cartier quartz movements are actually well finished.

They are also believed to have properties of protection and good fortune, perfect for somebody in the early days of flight.""

    Loved the whole episode.. your background history really is excellent and brings the watch alive. I bought my Santos in 1998 in Paris at the Cartier boutique on Place Vendome. It was my first entry into a special watch and as such is dear to my heart. It's the unisex size, auto, 2 tone, gold roman numerals, blue cabochon on the crown, blue second hand and the wonderful Guillaume dial. All the true classic elements. I don't wear it that often as it is a small watch and the date is minuscule. But your enthusiasm has given me the desire to wear it more...looking forward to your review of it. Congratulations..

    First off I just wanna say your videos are the best. I’ve seen almost all of them. You are a true gentleman and I greatly appreciate your approach to your videos. Its obvious you put a lot of effort and time into them all.
    Honestly you have inspired me to order my first Squale and made me understand that some people are just negative no matter what. I had a recent incident where a guy approached me and asked about my watch. It was just a simple Citizen Aquamaster because I was out snorkeling for scallops that day. He asked me if I liked it and when I said I really did he told me that “if I was a real watch enthusiast I’d be wearing a Tudor or Rolex”. Lol. In the past I would have gotten bothered but then I thought back to your watch snob video and just laughed at him. I then proceeded to tell him that if I owned a Tudor and a Rolex I couldn’t have retired at 42 and afforded to travel the world learning what life was really about. I might only have a collection of 12 because that’s all I can travel with, but I appreciate and wear every one of them.
    So thank you! Your positive attitude and calming personality have brought many of us great joy! I really enjoy learning about all the different watches you feature and greatly appreciate your production quality.

    The square Cartier Santos steel & gold was my very first "luxury" watch which I bought new in 1984 at age 18. Being mechanically minded since I can ever remember, I was fascinated with the Santos apparent screws. I had to have that watch. It was serviced twice, first time as it has water dew inside and the second time as the original bracelet was worn out to the point that it was not anymore safe to wear. I retired it upon receiving it back from the last service about 20 years ago as I had bought a replacement watch to wear whilst it was away. I shall take it out of retirement when I return to Paris. It's beautiful, it's iconic.

    Objectively my favorite Cartier would be the Tank Anglaise I have since it's the only one I have but I'm hoping to add a Santos to my collection in the near future. The largest size is pushing it on my smaller wrist but the smaller sizes don't have a date complication which I find handy for my work and I don't want this to just be a weekend watch.

    Awesome 👍 it's not your ordinary or expected version of the Santos. Makes it stand out. Quartz is totally fine for such a watch. Always believed with Cartier Tank and Santos, without a running seconds in many examples, who cares if it's quartz. You'd never know or miss the fact it's not mechanical, hand wound or automatic. Always ready and accurate. Especially since you have a moon phase complication, never have to be concerned with figuring out what phase the moon is if the watch had powered down (if it were a mechanical) and taking extra time resetting that as well. Set and forget for the most part. Enjoy the outliers within the classics.
    Great choice, man!

    TGV adds to 2022's two-tone momentum 😁. Small anecdote: This time last year I nearly refused to pay $240 for a little 1990's twotone Tag SEL automatic (blue dial, black strap) but it was so pretty, so i went for it. I refused $500 cash for it last week, people seem to want the gold/steel look all of a sudden. Stuck it on to write this after watching your show, so keep that twotone marketing rolling 🤣🤣.And what a cool Santos (that photo of him standing up in his plane as he scoots past the ladies, full trim suit and tie is so good); suits you so well, the pocket shot was class. And great catch on how Charlie Sheen trades up during the movie, by the way 👍so get yourself some wide braces/suspenders.🤟

    Amazing watch!!! I was pondering between the tank, santos & datejust. Being my first luxury watch, I was leaning to rolex more, i guess because of the name, but i knew deep down i really wanted a cartier more. I pulled the trigger on a santos Galbee XL, as i wasnt the biggest fan of the integrated bezel look on the new model. I love it. No regrets at all! A watch for a lifetime!

    I love buying from Japan. Watch sellers there are a cut above. Great product, great to work with. Anyway pure class TGV, you old thing, enjoy your Santos! I do have a special request: could you please make us a mega-omnibus of our superhero-come-villain, you guessed it: Hugo. That's right, a compilation of all Hugo Mountbatten's appearances on The Urban Gentry! I know it would require A LOT of editing and your time is precious, but it would be so worth it! Uncork a bottle of your favorite Chianti and have a few chuckles along the way! I do so appreciate everything you do and have brought to the hobby in spreading knowledge and love of horology and not just watches!

    Many people are unaware that Cartier does not only have serious watch heritage, but it has actually been really important in the development of watches as we have them today. You picked up a great specimen as far as I can see from the video. I just know you're genuinely going to enjoy this watch. Congratulations!
    Oh and as far as quartz vs mechanical goes: it's possible to love both equally, and it's also possible to love a watch regardless of the movement that powers it. People need to stop bashing quartz, it's unnecessary and ignorant.

    Good buy and good work! Quartz - why not? I have a Cartier Panthere quartz. After an effortless 20 years it has never been serviced. When I do open the Box to call upon it's formidable and immaculate presence it is still there - dutifully ticking away.
    It has required a few batteries in that time. It is worth pointing out that the current crop of battery driven Cartier wrist watches will now power the watch for 7 years. (Tell that to the Wife or partner; and save a few thousand toward your next automatic !)

    I love Cartier, my Nan had a gold Cartier Tank which my sister took about 20 years ago when it was left to our side of the family, I was offered first but I just simply didn't know what it was and I just thought it was a woman's watch and it will probably better off with my sister, but that was back in the day when my idea of the perfect watch was either a Casio F91w or a classic Swatch watch with something mad going on, like Salvador Dali's melting clocks or William Shakespeare face printed on it. I was at that level of sophistication. When I really got into watches about 10 years ago it dawned on me on how much I messed up. My sister keeps it for best and it still looks new and fantastic.

    Superb history lesson on the Santos & Cartier as a brand. I was checking eBay & Chrono24 as I was watching, to look at these timepieces.
    Quartz or auto does it matter....
    A watch is a watch.
    You could tell how excited you were when opening that package and that adds to value of your videos as it’s show you are a true timepiece enthusiast.
    Later on this year I will hopefully purchasing my 1st ever luxury watch(pre owned), and you’ve thrown a spanner in the works with the Santos.
    I’m looking at Omega, Tudor; Meistersinger & Glashutte brands & now a Santos 😂
    Keep up the great content and enjoy that Santos 👍
