I was very scared by the lonely atmosphere but I absolutely loved it as a child. I can't have been the only one who shed a few tears when the robots teddy bear got ripped apart
Thanks! The claymation intro is one of the most decidedly un-lazy things I've done. I certainly hope it'll show up on GoG.com someday! It's a crying shame more people haven't been able to experience The Neverhood.
The claymation work in this game is just amazing when you think about it and realize just what kind of effort a lot of it would take. Especially the bits involving moving "liquid"
When i was in a private religious school (that was also on a cult list for a while) all the computers had the neverhood demo and good god trying to find it for 13 years your video has saved my sanity because i thought it was all fever dream. No wonder i am good at weird horror stuff because i played this a lot as a kid
There was a time when I had Willy Trombone's entire monologue memorized. I'd watched the making-of mockumentary that came on the disc and I'd read the entire chronicles in the records room. It's really unfortunate about the video compression -- if I had to guess, I'd say that's the main thing keeping them from releasing a remastered version. That and maybe intellectual property issues.
RUclips recommended me this old school LGR review. I'm glad it did. So happy to see an old review and feel it just as good as the newer ones. The quality of this channel has been so consistent throughout the years. Makes me think about channels like cgr or avgn who lost most of their initial charm
Yeah... unfortunately after the magnificent Neverhood the Armikrog sequel feels like it's missing something important... I finished the game and I was NOT impressed, sadly.
I've always really appreciated claymation and the time and effort that goes into it. I mean the amount of precision and just work that goes into making a full length movie or of course a game, is truly astounding.
This game deserves a re-release somewhere like GOG. Maybe there might even be a possibility to remaster it to a degree and add in higher quality cutscenes?
I'd assume that the original videos were of higher quality than the ones released, at least colour-wise. So it would be possible but is probably deemed non-profitable.
I can strongly recommend using ScummVM (at least v. 1.7) for playing this game on any system ScummVM is available (including modern Windows and Android). ScummVM has complete reimplementation of the game mechanics (it even doesn't need .exe of the game - just data files), so the compatibility issues just don't exist.
It's actually a popular cult classic in Eastern Europe! If you ask anyone over 25 who had a computer back in the 90s-00s - they have all played Neverhood. And the soundtrack is unavoidable as well, they used it quite a few television shows.
To this day I thank my dad for showing me this game when I was a little kid like 10 years ago maybe, I freaking loved it then and I still love it now. I don't even know how he knew about it but I still remember playing it and loving every second of it. I especially remember the super long corridor with a story on the wall, of course I didn't read it bc I didnt speak English at the time, but walking through all that just to get a disc. Ahh... The memories. It's so weird though because I never met anyone who knew the game, I don't even know if it was released in Poland as I had a pirated, English version..
I was exactly the same as you , 12 years ago my dad just brought me that game and he said that he actually used to play it when he was younger(idk like when he was working in a computer hardware store in 1992 or 1991!) ! and the game that I had was exactly the same as yours I mean it was a pirated English version! Oh man what a great memories!
Ok this comment was written 3 years ago, but same! My dad also gave me an English version and I played it when I was younger as well, and I don't know if it was released in Poland either to be honest. Apparently my brother got it when he was younger for his birthday, so that's how I knew it. I definetly remember the hall which I couldn't read because I wasn't bothered to, and that really annoying matching puzzle and "H" puzzle I was stuck on for AGES. Good times.
Basically the same here! I was the happiest 10 year old ever, and thought im the smartest boy ever because I finished the game and my friends couldnt ;)
Same here. I don't know if the game was sold in Argentina, where I'm from, but my dad got it pirated from some guy who sold games and boy did I love this one. To this day I joke with my brother with Willies' opening line "Uhm... helloooo!", and also Hoborg's closing words stuck with me and often come to my mind when I'm happy: "Man, things are good."
+nokeric It looks much better on CRT screen (seriously), the colour that LCD can provide vs CRT's... it looks like game's (256 colour) palette was optimized for CRT.
Holy crap, I played this game while I was in school. Our teacher in Year 5 had us play it as a class so we'd solve puzzles and do all the good problem solving that comes with that, and it was entertainment too. Good shit! Instead of every other class having free time, we played The Neverhood, and that might've been the best decision ever made for a group of kids. Learning how rare and unknown this game is, I'm amazed I chanced across it. So, thanks teacher! You gave me a fantastic memory of a very unique - and apparently rare - game!
I was eight when this game came out and I never beat it, but I loved every bit of what I did play. Except the overworld, the stark visuals and ambient audio creeped young me out and I had to mute it whenever I was out there.
I couldn't remember the name of that shareware pack! Nobody I asked would know what I was talking about. I'm so glad you mentioned it! Games Sampler 2 was the 1st shareware pack I played that has you walk around some building before playing the games. Oh, the nostalgia! Thanks!
I first played this game back on a Windows 98, like 14 years ago! Oh the memories... one of my favorite puzzle games of all time, on nostalgia alone. I think they're making a sequel based on the same graphics (claymation). It will be called Armikrog or something like that
I must agree to this review, the game's soundtrack is very unique and animation is super smooth and very nice to look at, all and all this is a pretty good game, also nice intro
Aaaaa! The Neverhood is one of my favorite games! That music was a perfect score. Thanks for the memories. Another game that's stupidly hard to find from the same time is Bad Mojo, where your character gets turned into a cockroach.
Okay, I can't thank you enough on this one. In 10 minutes you've covered perfectly well which may be my favorite game, period. You even said things I didn't know! So thanks again Clint, and rest assured: as long as you keep doing this with such passion, me and others like me will go on supporting you :)
Alright I've been watching your videos for about two weeks now, which means I must subscribe. This game, along with a number of other games you've reviewed, came with my gateway computer back in the day. Loving this nostalgia kick!
I didn't know you covered the Neverhood! :D It was such a strange, wonderful, almost uncomfortable, world for a latchkey kid in the 90's to find themselves immersed in while home alone. An eerie, but fascinating world floating in a black void that you basically get to explore all by yourself. It made such an impression on me that 90's post modern design and spacey ambient music are the two halves that make up my happy place today. That and the Neverhood soundtrack. It's a strange place, but it's mine.
I'm so happy to find that someone else remembers this game. Especially someone so knowledgeable. I fell in love with this game when I played it on a MSN mailer disc (I remember it being on that) but never got to play it fully till a few years ago. I wouldn't say the gameplay was mind blowing, but it is the fact that I was watching stop motion animation using clay as the characters and world that made the experience very fun. In today's world of almost production line assembly of video games, titles like The Neverhood I feel stand the test of time for being unique in its presentation.
One of the best games of my childhood I ever played! It’s so clever, beautiful and outstanding done - that I would easily call it a masterpiece!!! Thank you creators of it - you brought me so many brilliant moments of my childhood! 🙏 Aloha!
Watching this in 2019, one could theoretically use AI upscaling to bring the game to modern resolutions, the main issue then would be that of who owns the rights to it.

This game was my freakin' childhood. I'ts soo old,but STILL fantastic Actually there WILL be a next game, not a sequel to this,It will be called Armikrog,I'ts an another story with a astronaut and his dog...They're working on it,I think It will be fantastic
LGR, I was about to send you a message to do a review on the neverhood ... well what do you know, you Sir, know what to review. I was already a fan, now I am a SUPER fan.
I enjoy all your videos without bothering about what the content you are reviewing actually is, instead the way you review these games. 'Tis very entertaining.
I got the Neverhood demo as a kid, from the same game sampler CD as you, it looks like! :D I adored it, it was dreamlike and fantastic, wacky, gorgeous, and to a degree the first adventure-puzzle game I played properly, if not counting dicking around in Lucasarts point-and-click games a bit younger, not knowing English properly yet or what the heck I was doing overall. Seeing this brought back many memories and made me really happy, thank you!
my dad brought me this when i was 6 or 8 years old and i still play it every year lol i love the neverhood! also im from New Zealand and i love ur channel cheers LGR!!!
I just came across your Channel about a month or so ago and have been going through watching different videos and was extremely excited when I saw that you had done a video on the Neverhood! I love this game and really enjoyed playing! I was not one of the 42000 that bought it tho, my parents bought a Gateway computer and the Neverhood, along with Age of Empires, flight simulator98, and monster truck madness was one of the free games that came bundled with it.
HOLY SHIT. THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVER I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU DID A REVIEW ON IT. It's so amazing. This is such a massively amazing gaming for so many reason. I currently have 2 sealed copies, one I opened to play and one still sealed.
6:40 tbh me and my gf (now wife) were desperate enough to draw the entire railway and writing down symbol sequences literally with pen and paper just for the sake of solving this with no walkthroughs, and it kinda worked. Neither to brag nor to belittle others, it requires effort and time but it's possible.
God I remember this game from when I was really young. I used to watch my uncle play it and it just had the most unique and strange feeling about it. I loved it.. but it was so scary, even now it's pretty spooky with its atmosphere and the monsters.. all the darkness. What a game.. I can't believe how much work they had to put into this game.
I was at Dreamworks when this was being made, never saw anything about it and only knew about it when I saw it at the Dreamworks Studio Store. Project I was on at the time was The Prince of Egypt. The only game I saw being made at DWI was a Goosebumps game and a Jurassic Park game.
Just randomly looked it up today because I got a flashback yesterday. Absolutely such a fun damn game. So much fun and I can't believe how well it was done because that's so much work to do it with claymation.
Played this game with an aunt of mine back in the day. I remember borrowing the CD at some point and sharing it with friends at school through my adolescent and teen years. I have no idea where where the game wound up to this day, but I do hope it get's rediscovered at some point, and brings happiness to whomever finds it...
I'm french and it seems this (great) review reminds me some brief memories.. Such a strong visual identity, unique game escaped from a so good time, wow.. ! I already have Grim Fandango boxed in FR but for this one.. It will be hell of a challenge.. Congrats to your hard work and thank you for having revealed this (hidden) gem from the past =)
Holy shit. I remember now. The group home had this game along with Road Rash, Earthworm Jim, and a bunch of others on this Gateway 2000 PC in the basement. I spent so much time playing this, it’s been so long (24 years). I’d completely forgotten until I saw the preview for this and it all came rushing back
I had no idea there was an original game. I got the second game on the ps4 not to long ago and loved it so much. I'll have to get my sweaty hands on this guy.
2:13 You have The house of the dead in its retail box! I love this game even more than Resident evil! I hope get this version someday. BTW, nice stop motion intro! Fits perfectly with the game.
Got this game as a gift when I was about 12 and I loved it so much. Wish I still had my boxed copy. Lent it to a friend decades ago and they ended up moving. Great game though. Visually impressive and the story and puzzles were fantastic. I really want to replay it sometime.
Best graphics of any game from 1996. Less blocky then even modern games! Funny enough you can tell from comment section what kind of people grew up on what kind of games. Its pretty amazing how games like this and classic RPG's such as Baldurs Gate , Planescape torment has inadvertently shaped my mind to at least try to think from multiple angles. Well written villains and moral ambiguity as well as puzzles all playing a vital role. It is just sad that modern games have strayed so far from what made gaming great in the 1st place that i actually feel alienated from games with small exceptions like Pillars of eternity or something a bit more mainstream like Witcher 3 that upholds those old values.
If you like the Neverhood, you might consider trying Dementia, also known as Armed and Delirious in the US and Granny in Germany and its native Israel. Imagine The Neverhood meets South Park and your typical Sierra game taken to the extreme. Check out Ross's game dungeon for information on that Armed and Delirious, though not only is it hard to get running but it is also a hard game to like, reasons for such Ross covers in his review.
Man dude, I nearly shat bricks when I saw this on my subscribers page. This was my absolute favorite childhood video game. My dad's friend got a copy for free from some convention he went to and it sorta was just given to me to mess around with. Awesome job dude :D (Especially that clay-mation intro!!)
Wow, this looks great. I really love the style and general atmosphere. One that I really missed out on, I guess. The strange and difficult puzzles are definitely a plus for me, though. I love games like that - the harder or weirder, the better. :p Myst and Riven were great examples. Thanks for the review, another solid video!
I had this game growing up and loved it. Recently it popped in my head and it took some searching to remember the name of it again. I agree, an updated remastered version with a larger resolution would be great. Still, it's a classic that I MUST have again.
I loved The Neverhood, definitely some good memories playing it as a kid in the 90s. Pro Tip: Rip the CD to an ISO image and use Deamon Tools to mount a virtual drive...no more buzz saw optical drive.
I have this game on the original disk which I have owned since the year it came out! :D I had no idea it goes for so much now I love this game so much, grew up with it. i remember eating fruit from the tree and just dying from laughter and the stupidly long burps. Ah to be so young and innocent again. I've never actually been able to beat the game on my own. It was my grandpa who got it for me and playing it with him was the only time I ever beat the game or ever got very far in it. It really does give you easy puzzles and then slap you in the face with some off the wall difficult one out of nowhere. This game, Streets of Simcity, Jane's WWII combat, Jane's IAF, Flight simulator 2000, Age of Empires, Wolfenstein 3D, and some monster truck game of which I cant remember the name of were the computer games of my childhood and all thats to my grandpa no less.
I've loved this game ever since around 1995 when we got it and I sat playing for hours, even though I was only around 4-5 years old then. Best game ever.
Brother played it when I was a child, I tried playing it too but it was too difficult for me, played it again after a couple of years (18) and enjoyed it quit a bit, huge loss for the gaming community, I love seeing you upload a video about it.
This game was awesome. I have fond memories of playing this during school holidays with 2 of my best friends. We would play through out the night while getting pissed out of our minds in whatever we could find hidden in my dad's 'secret' alcohol stash. This game will always have a really special place in my heart.
LGR, Thank you. THANK YOU. I played this game once many years ago, and I didn't even believe it EXISTED for years. Now I just need to find the old Mech PC game I had!
Me too. I played it when I was around three/four years old. I think its the combination of the scary cover art, the 'weird' (but awesome) and not getting the game at all at the time. In the cover art he looks frightened and the sky is all black. And the claymation is this weird mixture of fiction and reality, theres allot of claymation made for grown ups with goer stories and fights out there, and there's a reason to it (its scary as hell). But I liked the game, it was scary but thrilling.
"Despite the puzzles which get a bit too out there"; well that was the selling point of the game for me when I first played it eons ago; really loved the puzzle design, they were all quite inventive and challenging and I loved that.
I was very scared by the lonely atmosphere but I absolutely loved it as a child. I can't have been the only one who shed a few tears when the robots teddy bear got ripped apart
same
I cried like a child... Well... I was one.
MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE BILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
No spoilers!
I love this game still 😁
neverhood needs a steam release so much i can smell it.
An HD, wide screen version
Thanks! The claymation intro is one of the most decidedly un-lazy things I've done.
I certainly hope it'll show up on GoG.com someday! It's a crying shame more people haven't been able to experience The Neverhood.

Went to the Schola Progenium, eh Adeptus?
aw this is one of my favorite games of my life.
KateReadsBooks I grew up with this game I want to play it all over again
same here
There was a time when I had Willy Trombone's entire monologue memorized. I'd watched the making-of mockumentary that came on the disc and I'd read the entire chronicles in the records room. It's really unfortunate about the video compression -- if I had to guess, I'd say that's the main thing keeping them from releasing a remastered version. That and maybe intellectual property issues.
I memorized the monologue too! *High fives* It's SO MEMORABLE
you got it right with the latter point. it is also the reason an ACTUAL sequel cannot be made by the same folks: Neverhood now belongs to EA.
Things, look icky. But Willy knows what to do! Happy Birthday!
Guess I was one of the 42k people who bought it!
lol
I am going to buy it i havent yet
Buy it! I still own my copy 15 years later and it's a treasure in my collection still today.
Got this game at three years old. The weasel always scared the crap out of me....
Klogg was the one that scared me most. Playing at age 5 for that game messes you up for life, am I right?
RUclips recommended me this old school LGR review. I'm glad it did. So happy to see an old review and feel it just as good as the newer ones. The quality of this channel has been so consistent throughout the years. Makes me think about channels like cgr or avgn who lost most of their initial charm
Also this game needs a remaster like Grim Fandango got.
Yes I want it too
downphoenix Yeah.
You realize how much clay that would require?
Three tons, give or take 😎
@@W3Rn1ckz None. It would require none clay.
The guys behind this game and Earthworm Jim are making a new game, in the same style as The Neverhood. Its called Armikrog, and it looks awesome
crativ3 Yeah. I do want to try that out.
Ouch Armikrog's got some pretty horrible ratings... Looks like it was not a good successor at all...
planescaped It had a potential, but it was done half-assedly.
@@planescaped I still think it's pretty neat. Bowing to reviews instead of making up your own mind is stupid
Yeah... unfortunately after the magnificent Neverhood the Armikrog sequel feels like it's missing something important... I finished the game and I was NOT impressed, sadly.
I'm so happy I still own an actual copy of this game.
I own a copy, but on a disc that my uncle burned the game on to. If I had a true copy, I'd cry. ;-;
Ted Soto selling for about $40.00ish out of box
bruu I still have a fucking CD disk for neverhood XD
I did............but I think we lost it in a move.
fuck my life :D
I actually have 2 discs of this, sadly one is a bit too scratched to work anymore.
I've always really appreciated claymation and the time and effort that goes into it. I mean the amount of precision and just work that goes into making a full length movie or of course a game, is truly astounding.
LGR is easily one of the best channels on RUclips.

The original videos unfortunately no longer exist.
I believe EA own the rights, so not a chance.
@@therealpapercat How do you know that?
I really like how you went out of your way to make LGR intro as claymation for this, and a great review as usual.
"The Mid 90s were a bad time to release point and click adventures."
Freddi Fish and Pajama Sam would like to speak with you
I can strongly recommend using ScummVM (at least v. 1.7) for playing this game on any system ScummVM is available (including modern Windows and Android). That support simply didn't exist when I made this video, or else it would've been mentioned! But yes, it works great with it nowadays.
Lazy Game Reviews Scummvm supported Neverhood in a prerelease version at the time of the review.
It's actually a popular cult classic in Eastern Europe!
If you ask anyone over 25 who had a computer back in the 90s-00s - they have all played Neverhood.

You gotta love virtual disk drives that run an ISO file. That way your optical drive doesn't sound like a helicopter.
When i ate the fruit he did it for sooooo long my old XP pc crashed xD

to those who DON'T know:
The neverhood is getting it's own spiritual successor in 2014, (by the same people, with the SAME genre) called armikrog!

LGR, I was about to send you a message to do a review on the neverhood ... well what do you know, you Sir, know what to review. I was already a fan, now I am a SUPER fan.
I loved this game back in the 90s. I was one of the people who bought it. Awesome review LGR!
Amazing review! I would really love to see you review "Armikrog"!
Your narration is fantastic. Very well written. I'm enjoying your content in these reviews.
Another great review, and I love the custom title screen!
Just randomly looked it up today because I got a flashback yesterday. Absolutely such a fun damn game. So much fun and I can't believe how well it was done because that's so much work to do it with claymation.
My favorite retro tech RUclipsr reviewing my favorite game.
I’d completely forgotten until I saw the preview for this and it all came rushing back
I have never played this game but WOW this game is detailed. You can see every single joint move as it should. That is dedication.
Omg I remember that game! I thought I'd never hear about it again.
2:15 you and me both, that sampler entertained me longer then it should of lol
Holy shit I remember playing this when I was five! But I never saw or heard of it again until today, thank you!
I had no idea there was an original game. I got the second game on the ps4 not to long ago and loved it so much. I'll have to get my sweaty hands on this guy.
I loved this game, lost it years ago but couldn't find it since...Thank you LGR!!
Many thanks for reviewing this amazing title mate. An awesome person is you.
It's not something I would play, but I love these lessons with you on PC game history!! Leaves me craving for more!
I think I played this when I was little, but I remember being too weirded out about the aesthetic
One of my fav games of all time...and for many other 90s gamers !
:D I had no idea it goes for so much now
I love this game so much, grew up with it. i remember eating fruit from the tree and just dying from laughter and the stupidly long burps.
I was looking for this. This was the game I remember from my childhood. I remember I was super creeped out by it
Brother played it when I was a child, I tried playing it too but it was too difficult for me, played it again after a couple of years (18) and enjoyed it quit a bit, huge loss for the gaming community, I love seeing you upload a video about it.
Right now they are making amrikrogg which will be another point adventure game in stop motion animation. I'm so excited!!
This is my favourite game. I replayed it yesterday and them i saw your video! Awesome.
I love that you reviewed The Neverhood! It was a childhood game for me. I think it was one of the first games I ever played. :)
Clay themed games? thats awesome..especially for an old games.
Where can i buy this thing? expect on ebay or amazon?
Thread212 only Amazon or eBay: EA has a chokehold on its rights and is not letting it go.
Id try yard sales and hunting through thrift stores
This game was awesome. I have fond memories of playing this during school holidays with 2 of my best friends. We would play through out the night while getting pissed out of our minds in whatever we could find hidden in my dad's 'secret' alcohol stash. This game will always have a really special place in my heart.
LGR, Thank you. THANK YOU. I played this game once many years ago, and I didn't even believe it EXISTED for years. Now I just need to find the old Mech PC game I had!
I still have this on pc and i will never get sick of the music, ever. I listen to the soundtrack while i clean house or draw all the time
Dat Opening.
Lovely claymation there.
"Despite the puzzles which get a bit too out there"; well that was the selling point of the game for me when I first played it eons ago; really loved the puzzle design, they were all quite inventive and challenging and I loved that.
I love anything Claymation! I wanna play this!
This game was amazing, me and my grandfather used to play it when I was really young and I was just so fascinated by it.
Remember being stuck on the door with the musical water puzzle for several years when I was a kid xP
