I dunno that this song is actually in Maynard's range, tbh... I've seen Tool perform this song live a few times, and he never actually sang it this high. Due to that, I've always kinda assumed that he can't. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Maynard fan. Just, objectively speaking, Tool's live performances usually are as good as the studio versions (if not better), but that hasn't been the case for this song at any of the concerts I've been to.

The whole band is almost beyond human. But without taking anything away from anyone, I rarely hear people praise Justin's INCREDIBLE bass lines. He masters the "bottom" and in doing so is often overlooked. But I can't imagine how different the band might sound without him. It's a total effort of complexity, and each adds their own style and genius. Another reason their music stands the test of time. Rock on boyz... 💜🤙👏👍🎶💯

I was riding my road bike today and started thinking about what makes DC the living legend that he is. When I was playing my guitar along with, I believe, Pneuma, I noticed that his toms were tuned to perfection to the key of the song. That's one. Then I thought back to the last Tool concert I went to and the pre-show band that was playing. Their drummer was a great drummer technically, but he was way overdoing things. Intricate patterns for the intricacy of it. Now, DC is the master of intricate patterns and Polyrhythms, but each note he strikes, each tom, snare, cymbal, tabala, drumpad, has a function. I think that's what makes him one of the greats.

46&2 is one of their more popular ones....and Danny’s drum solo in that is so good too. Not as involved as Pneuma solo, but still awesome. You could literally review so many more and have similar reactions. Fear Innoculum, Lateralus, Jambi, Invincible. I would love to have a drum set set up to even just attempt to play along with Tool songs. But my 20 year old Mapex set that hasn’t been tuned in year doesn’t do the song justice. When interviewed soon after the release of 10,000 Days, Maynard said something to the effect of "The Pot is the kind of song no singer out there has the balls to try and sing." I can't recall the exact quote or from whither it came, but it was delivered with exquisitely Maynardly Maynardness. Ugh, Danny is on the GOAT team, for sure. (I refuse to crown one drummer the GOAT cuz... ya can't... but he's def a starting player on that team.)
I'd love to hear you react to some Band-Maid! Akane Hirose is not on the GOAT team... yet. But she very well could be with another couple of decades under her belt cuz she's VERY good. Part of what makes her so good are the choices she makes and the energy she infuses into the songs. Check out the live version of Domination from their concert on Feb 14 of this year.

Maynard's style range is incredible and convincing! Listen to him in the bands: TOOL, aPerfetCircle, and Puscifer and you'll get a full flavor of just what he can do with his voice. Here are a few samples but his style range is even much broader than just these: aPerfectCircle - Brena: ruclips.net/video/uX39uHKAZHo/видео.html
    Puscifer - Mamma Sed & The Humbling River: ruclips.net/video/dR3ccmWmLhk/видео.html & ruclips.net/video/O0YxeTjFn70/видео.html

As a person with no musical talent but desperately feels every note and beat, can you tell me if Danny Carey-who appears to defy convention-practices until he gets perfect muscle memory or is that just how his brain works…i.e. completely off beat?

Cant take your eyes off of Carey...i love that he defies the laws of physics, you know you have to be a ninja small to play doublebass metal . He is 6’5” & has ti fold himself behind the kit.
