It’s so crazy to think the advertising chose the year 2000 in that advertisement. What they chose as the somewhat distant future is now 20 years ago. Just shows how long the show has been going and really puts it into perspective
One of the best depictions of an invaded Earth I've seen. The pacing issues from their first appearance are gone and this is a true classic with some of the greatest scenes in Hartnell's era.
This story gave us one of the best goodbye speeches in the whole of Dr Who & on Television in general, I personally loved it and ‘as you already know’ it was reused again at the start of The 5 Doctors.
Wait...you're telling me that Terry Nation recycled his own story?!? ;) Yes, it's a bit of a retelling of the Daleks, but it's so darn good at times. I really do like this one a great deal and suddenly feel like I should dust off my DVD of it and give it another visit.
Really enjoying this series so far. The Daleks Invasion of Earth has really striking visuals and Susan's departure is still to this day remains one of the best companion departures.
The funny thing is, before Doctor Who was getting criticised for its politics, you pointed out in your 'Why I Love Doctor Who' video (circa 2012) "the Daleks are essentially Nazis from space". I just thought that was worth mentioning.
Dalek Invasion of Earth was one of the first Doctor who stories i watched when i was really young, i remember this being one of my favourite dalek stories and it still is to this day
"I think we better pit our wits against them and defeat them!" "Yes they dare and we've got to dare to stop them!" I think this story defined The Doctor's character for years to come, in season 1 he was very much trying to get back to the TARDIS and not wanting to interfere but here he makes a decision not to leave earth until the Daleks are defeated! The Doctor, the ultimate SJW! 😂
The baby crocodile! :D so cute. It's rather entertaining how easy they are to mess with. The last serial had people manhandling them now a good speech confuses them. Oh that good bye speech gets me every time.
I think the Susan/David love story would have worked much better if they hadn't of made Susan act so much like a child - even in the first part of this story. She grows up a little too quickly to make the love story believable. But the Doctor's goodbye speech to her is in the top 5 of Doctor Who tearjerkers.
She doesn't even grow up. She just has a crush on this guy who's like 25 and kisses him, and from that the Doctor thinks she should stay behind and marry him. She says no when when David proposes to her and tries to get back in the TARDIS, but the doctor locks her out...
2:13 I don't mean to sound morbid but, it sounds like the poor guy had his entire family and pet rabbits killed be for he himself is gunned down. So much for 1964. In 2020, even just implying that children or animals are killed would be incredibly risky.
That slight hesitation Hartnell does, before starting his monologue. Like the Doctor (the FIRST Doctor of all people) thought he was ready, but then didn’t trust himself not to show emotion, so he had to pause and collect himself before beginning: “During all the years….” Beautifully done stuff.
Barbara runs over Daleks with a truck... that in itself makes this story great. Also she tricks the Daleks towards the end. I've only seen some of the 1st Doctor and the first TARDIS team, but wow Barbara Wright is quite the badass.
0:54 Oh, those were the days. Renember the year 2000? We celebrated the new millennium, VHS died out...well, along with half the Earth’s population when the Daleks landed. I’m sure we all had a mate who had a sudden mandatory career change to a Roboman after that whole malarkey. Tell you what, though: the best political change the Daleks ever made was exterminating Westlife. You can’t say they didn’t get things done back then; had we known Brexit was gonna be a thing, we wouldn’t have bothered rising up for liberation after Bedfordshire blew into pieces. Anyway, nostalgic rant over.

Yeah, the advert gets the date wrong. There's also reference to this invasion in 'Day of the Daleks' which involves different time-lines and alternative futures so maybe in the end this invasion didn't happen.
To be fair, it wouldn't be the last time Doctor Who would have retconned its own story out of existence. Just try and figure out the continuity of Listen (at least involving a particular side character) after the Series 8 finale.
In no other incarnations of the Doctor did he even bother to revisit his own Granddaughter? What kind of family does the Timelord come from? Surely his Granddaughter would be a Timelord in her own right? What about her regenerations?
The daleks earth is my favourite daleks story story because it is really good a I hope every classic doctor who fan watched the daleks invasion of earth if you haven't watched it
So the Dalek's plan in this is Lord Slug's plan from DBZ movie 4? So that movie rips off itself AND Dr Who? Idk how many people in this comment section know DBZ but seriously, Slug's whole plan in that is just to turn Earth into a mobile base.
I love the throwaway lines of early Doctor Who before they knew what Timelords were. Like 'Grandfather's old now". Meanwhile 1000 years later and he has the body of a middle aged woman. I kind of wish they never had Susan be a Timelady. Like if it wasn't for the Five Doctors, you could retcon Susan as someone of a humanoid species who the Doctor found on one of his first trips off Galifrey and convinced her to stay with him as his Granddaughter.
I kinda interpreted Susan's 'grandfather's old now' line as her trying to think up excuses for herself not to stay on earth and continue travelling with the doctor
The Doctor never bothered to revisit his own Granddaughter in any of his subsequent incarnations? The question has to be put... Why? Why not? If she really is the Doctors Granddaughter then she is a Timelord aswell, so it seems a rather abrupt parting of the ways. Families should at least keep in touch!
This Dalek story was the first story to have a Dalek who was a different colour, to the standard Dalek warriors the supreme Dalek been jet black with dark blue hemispheres.
This is true. However, my opinion has changed since then. It was better than I remembered it being and even I was surprised by how much I warmed to it.
So if the Doctor goes back there will he have to do it all over again. How many attempts did he have to get the right result. Time travel is complicated.
Wait so by Nu-Hu logic, Susan will eventually regenerate into a Man, and if that happens with David, and he doesn't turn gay... then he's a bigot. And there's a Man called Susan... Couldn't Whittaker just have been Romana in a spinoff?! Her goodbye comes off as really sexist to me. She's 16, and he just leaves her with the first guy who comes along because it's what a "normal woman" should do. It'd be one thing if Susan actually wanted to stay on her own accord, but she says no to David and tries to get back in the TARDIS. Furthermore, the Doctor is obviously lying about coming back for her. We know from the 60 years of stories that he never does. But even at the time, the TARDIS was very random. I just have distaste for this scene and wish they'd just written her as wanting to leave on her own accord for whatever reason.
I love how younger Fans obsess over the special effects. None of these Chaps were part of that whole era where we'd pay hundreds of pounds just for an awful, almost pictureless copy of a rare story. It's not a bad thing lol, they just don't get it. Then again the section on the effects was brief and yes... falling Ian is bloody funny.
'Conquer the Earth, you poor pathetic creatures, don't you realize, before you attempt to conquer the Earth, you will have to destroy all living matter' Not only is this a wonderful monologue and put down to the Dalek that came out of the river, but may have been the inspiration for the reality bomb many years later. Regardless of Billy fluffing his lines now and then, some of the best lines belonged to The First Doctor, and only William Hartnell could do them, he was The original, you might say.
