You are so right on about the forest and the Vargas! Now THIS is how whoever the hell owns Star Trek now should promote Star Trek Continues. And bloody well get some sense and start paying those people to make more! These kinds of retro productions are EXACTLY what so many of us Star Trek and Doctor Who fans want. AND it's high time that these 1960s Daleks finally get their own spinoff, as Terry Nation clearly intended with Mission to the Unknown and what followed- a sort of Blake's Seven meets the 1960s TV Century 21 Dalek Chronicles comics I expect. Following the look of the latter would be a design master stroke. The Daleks in all their biological chemical nuclear genocidal racist horror have largely been wasted on Doctor Who, which is strongest when the horror element is strongest- a fact too often hampered by the show's family entertainment remit. Compare the Daleks of the original 1963 serial to their later incarnations and one sees that they have become caricatures.
The new series should return to a lot of classic who's style I do like new who but I find myself equally disliking it today for it's lack of atmosphere, and poor dialogue/ attempts at humour that distracts from the plot.
I completely agree, though the return to history episodes is a bright spot. But the 13th Doctor hasn't done any proper horror yet, alas. Also- Doctor Who needs to bring back for more all of the wonderful aliens in the Galactic Council, but in particular Sentreal the evil Christmas tree. In the name of intergalactic security I need to know EVERYTHING about this alien and its civilization. And while Nicholas Briggs is to be commended for bringing back some of the variety of voices the Daleks used to have in the 1960s- and I hope they keep them resurrected for the current show- the black Dalek completely flubbed its lines at the conference. In the script it clearly reads- "Iä! Iä! Ph’nglui mglw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah-nagl fhtagn!!!".
This era of television is a lost art now. I call it "electronic theatre" because it owes far more to the stage than the cinema. The sheer amount of hard work they put into these productions is astounding. An entire 25 minute episode would be filmed _as live_ within the space of less than 2 hours Some people laugh and sneer at the fact minor fluffs would be left in and the multi-camera setup means actions are never exactly perfect, but that's because editing a completed scene wasn't possible on videotape at the time. They could only chop off the start or the end of a take and because of the limited time they had in the studio a scene would only be remounted if it was completely unusable.
@@peylix-ohm4701 It's a pun or paraphrasing of the English saying 'birds of a feather flock together', (meaning people of the same type tend to associate with each other) in answer to your question of why you keep seeing horaciosi on videos you watch. What's not to understand?
As close as you can get to the real thing. If it hadn't been for me knowing that Brian Cant had played the pilot, you could have shown me this and told me it was the original.
The supreme Dalek has no eye pupil, the eyepiece is meant to be black not silver, it is meant to be silver in the middle section, not black and it is supposed to be matt black, not dusty thick glossy black. That is going to be a big glaring problem when people watch The Dalek's Master Plan in surviving episodes and reconstruction. And the fact it has no eye light or at least an eye circle, just a black silver eye stalk looks so awful, it doesn't cost much money to get that fixed.
@@MaskedMan66 I wouldn't expect someone to say they liked something that they really didn't, but the number of people that seem to think that there is a "white courtesy phone" just waiting for *_them_* to spew out their litany of complaints about this, that and the other is quite shocking, isn't it?
On a related note, I still don’t understand how that atrocious Christmas Special that aired in the middle of this “Feast of Steven” didn’t get a reanimated collab video. I always thought that, out of all the lost episodes, this one which was infamous for how bad it was would be the most fun for online animators to work on with all those exaggerated moments and little Easter eggs the collaborators love to put on their segments when they don’t take it too seriously.
Popcultureguy3000 Feast of Steven doesn’t suck!!! It’s a nice relaxing episode in the middle of a mammoth story and I always find myself laughing at it 😂 IF THEY DON’T ANIMATE IT THEN I WILL CRY AND SCREAM ON TWITTER!!!
Just amazing. The amount of effort and love that went into this is obvious. Everyone involved should be very, very proud of themselves. P.S. Anyone who gave this a thumbs down should just be ashamed of themselves.
That genuinely felt like I was watching a Hartnell episode! Brilliant, well done to all involved, now BBC we need more missing episode recreations! Use David Bradly as Hartnell, along with the adventure in space and time cast! That would be brilliant!
As much as I enjoyed David Bradley's performance, I think they should get actor, Nickolas Grace for the First Doctor, he resembles and sounds a lot more like him than Bradley does. He was in that short Dr Who special with Matt Smith. Link below... jag-london.com/media/zoo/images/nicholas-grace-profile-2_c1371be01e37cabab85743ae1898750c.jpg
I started watching this thinking it would be interesting at least. Having seen it I'm very impressed with the work everyone put into it and it honestly exceeded my expectations. It does look like a 60s episode, design, directing, acting and everything else about it. Great work all of you who worked on this. You should be proud of what you made.
21:40 I like how they even kept the fluffed line from the original when Marc announces himself as an agent of the “special security service” instead of “space security service”
This is fantastic! A huge pat on the back to the University of Central Lancashire for making something we otherwise will probably never get to see! Props, lighting, effects, acting all spot on and accurate to that period of “Doctor Who” TV history. I’d love to see this style make a return to screens - more Classic Who!
Well naturally, he was a big cog in the show's success and if it wasn't for his magic touch, the show wouldn't have been as successful as it was. Not to mention that it was in his contract to have a credit in the show regardless of appearance. Not sure why Jodie received a credit though? What did _she_ do?
@@crackerscheese33 Well William Hartnell is generally ranked low in doctor rankings because his writing didn't reach the heights of other doctors. He only ranks above Collin Baker, Jodie Whitaker, John Hurt and Paul Mcgann.

Very, very good. I saw this go out and it frightened the crap out of me, I was 7 at the time. It's been sitting in my memory for years and everyone I ever mentioned it to had no idea what I was talking about. Guys, you did a brilliant job
This is truly an exceptional recreation of Mission To The Unknown. The acting, set design, music all shot so authenticity made this a real treat to watch and is a real testament to all concerned. This episode is better than some modern BBC Doctor Who episodes.
Holy cow! When the Dalek rolled out of the shadows in their first scene, it was hard to remember that this video is only a recreation and not the real deal! Incredible work.
This is incredible. It truly feels like a 1960s Doctor Who! A massive massive well done to everyone involved. I've hoped and hoped to see this from the moment I've heard about it and I'm not disappointed in the slightest. Thank you again to everyone involved.
I hope that this team does more of these. This was excellent and for those of us who academically research the Doctor Who series, I want to say that this is an amazing bit of work. Well done. On behalf of the Earthbound TimeLords and the Missing Scripts Project -- Well done and this was FANTASTIC!
The Cast and Crew at WHO, Sci-fi Films are loving the BBC for making sure this amazing University work gets the credit it deserves, well done to everyone involved! You're fantastic!
This is such an excellent recreation. The whoever worked on the sound recording have captured it perfectly it sounds authentic, it looks authentic. The acting seems perfect.
18:23 In this episode, humans on a space ship attempt to prevent themselves being killed by others who look indistinguishably human, while completing tasks to repair their ship and send a distress alert.
Long time Who fan here (born in the Troughton era). Just finished watching this, and it is fantastic. I love the decision to keep it in black and white. It captures the feel of episodes from the era perfectly. One very minor quibble: the production values exceed those of the time, which, while being a quibble, is not a negative one. It appears this project had a budget far in excess of any from that era of Doctor Who. To all those who worked on this, you should be very proud of what you have accomplished. It makes the possibility of recreating all the lost episodes a very real thing.
@@Super_Mario128 but it was low budget don't deny that it had the budget of any other BBC drama, sci fi or not Star Trek, despite people laughing at how it looks now, had something like 10 times the budget that Doctor Who had
Classic Who was definitely low budget, but that does not mean it was not good! Even in the Tom Baker era, sets were frequently made up of flexible hoses, and bubble wrap, but that did nothing to diminish the quality of the stories that were told.
waterfieldV I don’t get the “one of those ‘fans’ “ insinuating he’s not a fan because he thinks that old dr who was low budget. What a silly thing to say.
Honestly- I wrote out all those credits, and then because Marc Cory is based partially on James Bond, I thought I'd write something at the end which is like the "James Bond will return" line that the Bond films used to use, so as this is a teaser ep for DMP I thought "The Daleks Will Return" was a nice thing to end on! But..... a production of DMP would be great. This is a pilot, really, see what the interest is, and who knows what may develop in the future. It would be great, if possible.

@@TheWeepingDalek I'd rather they put the effort into the animations. I don't understand this desire on the part of some fans to see impersonators playing the 1st and 2nd Doctor and their companions. I find it bizarre.
Classic Doctor Who has been off my radar for years because I got totally fed up with all the teasing online rumours about discovered missing episodes (resulting no recovered episodes for 10 years). Just found out this recreation exists and I have to say it is incredible! It really looks like the real thing from the 60's! From the acting to the design to the picture quality to the mono soundtrack to the use of camera and cutting! Absolute perfection! 👏
Amazing! Absolutely amazing! I started watching the classic series as a child during Tennant’s tenure to fully immerse myself in all things Who. I’ve always been disappointed that many of Hartnell’s and most of Troughton’s episodes are lost, but this production gives me hope for more recreations in the future. Congrats to UCLan from this filmmaker to the cast and crew for a job well done.
Oh, that was BRILLIANT..!!! So well observed,- every little detail and glitch of the original episode faithfully re-enacted and portrayed. I completely get why the BBC / Official Doctor Who channel endorses this project. Hopefully, when The Dalek's Master Plan is finally reconstructed and released on DVD, this live-action version of 'MissionTo The Unknown' will be included as a viewing option alongside the inevitable animated reconstruction. It truly merits preservation as a part of the BBC's own efforts to complete the 'Classic Era' through filling in the missing episodes.

I watched this last night and although it said recreation, I had no idea that it wasn’t the original episode. Absolutely astonishing, well done all who made this. Extremely authentic feel about it, the acting, the set, the whole thing was so genuine.
Nice Job. I feel like the BBC missed a trick a few years ago. I'd have secretly filmed a modernized version of The Tenth Planet story while the cast and set were around for Twice Upon a Time, then released it as a surprise New Year's Day special.
@@codyw1 That one episode that's missing is, arguably, the most important episode in the series. Plus, I'd hardly call David Bradley a cosplayer. All I was suggesting was a one off special. It doesn't erase or negate William Hartnell.
@@Yetaxa No-one is suggesting modernising it. Nothing in this episode looked modern at all. And nothing was ruined. The point is that more people will watch and enjoy live action than listen to a grainy soundtrack - it's the same point behind animating the stories.
It's far from being all over... roll on #DoctorWho! I haven't seen this episode since its reconstruction by 'Loose Cannon Productions' many years ago. Going to be exciting!
I have to say when I heard that this episode was to be recreated by a group of university students I wasn’t expecting anything spectacular. I thought it would be very basic production with unrealistic sets and costumes and with amateurish acting. How wrong was I! I am more than impressed, so much so, that I immediately watched the accompanying ‘making of the feature’ clip soon afterwards. The problem with this story, is that not only it doesn’t exist in the archives, but there are no telesnaps and very few publicity production photos, which make recreating this episode all the more difficult. However a few pictures of the alien delegates and the rocket exists all of which were recreated with accuracy in this production. The jungles sets are very lovely as were the costumes and the dramatic incidental music was accurately synched in the right places. Even the acting is superb especially from the leads, the actor playing Lowery even sounded like him! All in all, this production is a triumph and if I were to watch this episode and not know about the production behind it, I would be fooled into thinking that it was the actual episode which has been rediscovered! My thanks and congratulations to every single person that made this production possible. Well done all.
Thank you to everyone who worked on this. It really does feel like an episode of 60s Who. You've brought back to life something that we thought was lost forever.
technically not. Two episodes of the Keys of Marinus did not feature the Doctor, as did late odd episodes certainly the first full story, but calling it a full story is pushing it a bit due to its connection to The Daleks' Master Plan (being a prelude) A much more accurate Doctor-lite would be the Massacre, where the Doctor disappears halfways through episode one and doesn't return until halfway through episode four
Thank you so much, I felt just like I was back at my grandmothers house having tea, whilst simultaneously checking that my exit to the hall was clear so that I could hide when it got too scary! Amazing!
Nicholas Briggs mostly performs with his usual Dalek voice from the new series. But I do admire how he actually tries to impersonate more of Peter Hawkins and David Graham's performances as the Daleks in the jungle.
This was absolutely fantastic! A beautiful recreation and the fact it was made using lower quality cameras and no real CG really helped to give it that 60s feel rather than something modern. It really feels like this story has been brought back instead of just remade and if the original is never found, this will certainly fill that void. Awesome job guys!

This feels very authentic. Accents and delivery of the dialogue are spot on for the era.
James Cunningham The audio of the original episode was intact. No do it they used it as a template for how to deliver their lines.
This era of television is a lost art now. I call it "electronic theatre" because it owes far more to the stage than the cinema. The sheer amount of hard work they put into these productions is astounding. An entire 25 minute episode would be filmed _as live_ within the space of less than 2 hours
Some people laugh and sneer at the fact minor fluffs would be left in and the multi-camera setup means actions are never exactly perfect, but that's because editing a completed scene wasn't possible on videotape at the time. They could only chop off the start or the end of a take and because of the limited time they had in the studio a scene would only be remounted if it was completely unusable.

This is a reconstruction? It looks just like a proper episode!
Not a reconstruction, but a reproduction. There is no original footage in the video to be a reconstruction.

Now all we need is the remaining nine missing episodes of Masterplan, reanimated, and we're all set. Great job guys. Fantastic!

I like that William hartnell was credited like I’m the original episode
Well naturally, he was a big cog in the show's success and if it wasn't for his magic touch, the show wouldn't have been as successful as it was. Not to mention that it was in his contract to have a credit in the show regardless of appearance.
Not sure why Jodie received a credit though? What did _she_ do?
Well, it was due to BBC policy at the time: the main star of the show always had to be credited, even if he/she were absent for an episode
It was in William Hartnell's contract that he would be credited whether or not he appeared in the episode.
They did the same thing for the Troughton era
@@crackerscheese33 Well William Hartnell is generally ranked low in doctor rankings because his writing didn't reach the heights of other doctors. He only ranks above Collin Baker, Jodie Whitaker, John Hurt and Paul Mcgann.

@@Super_Mario128 but it was low budget
don't deny that
it had the budget of any other BBC drama, sci fi or not
Star Trek, despite people laughing at how it looks now, had something like 10 times the budget that Doctor Who had
"The Daleks will return."
Does that mean we're getting a release of "The Daleks' Master Plan" in some form in the near future?
Honestly- I wrote out all those credits, and then because Marc Cory is based partially on James Bond, I thought I'd write something at the end which is like the "James Bond will return" line that the Bond films used to use, so as this is a teaser ep for DMP I thought "The Daleks Will Return" was a nice thing to end on! But..... a production of DMP would be great. This is a pilot, really, see what the interest is, and who knows what may develop in the future. It would be great, if possible.

I would have no idea this was a recreation if I didn't already know. Exceedingly well done!
Well done all.

technically not. Two episodes of the Keys of Marinus did not feature the Doctor, as did late odd episodes
certainly the first full story, but calling it a full story is pushing it a bit due to its connection to The Daleks' Master Plan (being a prelude)
A much more accurate Doctor-lite would be the Massacre, where the Doctor disappears halfways through episode one and doesn't return until halfway through episode four
