@Is me ? the way that reading fan fiction since I was 10 has changed the way I view things as “weird” is alarming and funny. I’m not phased by any of these because I’ve seen the bottom of the barrel for AO3 tags, and it’s scary bitch.
I love how the comments are mostly people explaining how their fandom is probably responsible for a certain tag.
I'm sure they are not proud of it.

I would like to note that hetalia is technically a subset fandom, meaning all/a lot of hetalia works show up under it, I think. I was part of country humans for three months and it was a surprisingly small fanbase in all, but it does not have its own tag, so I had to scroll past hetalia works all the time hahaha

@@aurorechaton7604 Some hetalia works do, but hetalia has its own tag (which has over 43,000 works!) so the stories under geography (anthropomorphic) are mainly countryhumans… even though hetalia is also anthropomorphic countries, and technically fits under that tag, they are categorized separately, since they are distinct from each other. (Some writers do tag both hetalia and geography (anthropomorphic) though, but not many that I’ve seen, at least.)

To be fair with "Non-Consensual Electroconvulsive Therapy", despite the wording making it sound kinky, the tag itself isn't too weird or even that surprising to see in a high amount. It's basically referring to "electroconvulsive therapy used as torture" aka the way it used to be commonly used in the "treatment" of severe mental illnesses (especially schizophrenia) back when it was still known as electroshock therapy. Despite it's history, electroconvulsive therapy does have a purpose in modern medicine as it can be helpful for certain conditions, most notably depression, when done at low voltage. Those stipulations are important - it's handled VERY differently nowadays for obvious reasons... in most places anyway. Unfortunately, there are some places in the world that still use it to mistreat people. Therefore, specifying the "Non-Consensual" part is highly important - it denotes the difference between a legit therapy practice and deeply ableist torture. This makes it a content/trigger warning tag, so therefore it's not a surprise that it's relatively common. Quite frankly, I'm surprised it wasn't used MORE.
I suspect a chunk of those is Winter Soldier fic, which is straight up canonical torture.
@@beeta137 I bet a lot of them are old-timey aus in stories where the characters would be seen as crazy, or from stories with characters who think they're crazy. Basically, as an insanely heavy angst/hurt fic.

Asylums are fairly popular settings for historical/horror themed works and "The Mind Electric" is a really popular song in the animatic community, which likely has a lot of overlap with fanfic writers, so I doubt this type of story would ONLY have 155 fics.

This. I wouldn't even necessarily say my reading habits because I rarely feel emotionally ready for a fic dark enough to warrant that tag, but I see it frequently while scrolling through fics, so I guess it says a lot about the ships and authors I follow 🤭
Please, if you need an explanation, the “canon typical worms” is a thing in the horror podcast The Magnus Archives. There’s more to it than what I will say but bottom line the main characters essentially get eaten alive by worms. Most of them don’t die but… just listen to the podcast. It’s so good

At least half of those tags would make total sense for the Hannibal fics too. Especially the cannibalism puns, there's at least one cannibal pun per episode. "Nothing here is vegetarian." (but some of it is from a vegan! badum tsh) "You slice the ginger" "He was a particularly chatty lamb."

If you're unsure, try watching some animatics- lots and lots of spoilers in them though so be careful. Although seeing spoilers is what made me listen to it: the animatics weren't giving me the answers I was curious about and the wiki made it so dissatisfying. AA for the Christmas angst, the defenestration for ml and marvel and cannibal puns for hannibal. I am rather disappointed I know exactly where most of these tags come from and their purposes.

@@birch8109 trans men can lactate if they choose to give birth. i also know i saw one video on youtube of a cis man who would lactate constantly, but that was because of a hormonal issue (and he hadn't given birth or anything like that, ofc).
in short, anyone with the right organs to have a baby can lactate, regardless of gender or sex. feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

PSA: Please for the love of God do not use blood as lube. Please do not use anything that is not specifically marketed as lube that is safe to be used within your body as lube. Don't use soap or olive oil or spit or moisturizer, etc. All you're going to get is pain and bad side effects. So don't. Just don't.
Canola oil can be ok (according to an OB/GYN RUclipsr), but only use it if you're not also using condoms because it can degrade the condom and cause it to break. It's good to use if you're trying to get pregnant, because many of the other lubes contain spermicide, which is kind of counter-productive to the goal.
As I understand, the main things you want to avoid are anything sweet (which can cause yeast infections) and anything scented (which can cause irritation), but definitely do some research and don't just use random things. Also, water doesn't work, at all.

@@kaydubsthekoifish So The Shadowhunter Chronicles is a 19 book series that started as Ginny x Ron fanfiction. Thats the incest tag. The accidental baby acquisition came from two characters who acquisitioned two kids: an 8 month old warlock child and then 3 years later, 6 a six year old.
Therefore, if someone writes a Shadowhunters rewrite that follows those two plotlines, it could have those two tags.

the fact that canon typical worms has (the magnus archives) clipped onto the end is hilarious to me. like. what other franchises have that many worms, because I can tell you that season one has a significantly large amount.

I love trying to judge how much a tag is used as background stuff for a Fandom plot and how much is an important scene or concept. Canon-Typical Worms is both, depending on when in the show the fic takes place.
