- Can an AMT or an automatic or CVT or DSG climb up a hill? We have done a detailed video on how an AMT is so easy to drive and climb up a hill or a steep slope. How to drive an AMT car on hill? The AMT/CVT/automatic are similar to drive on the hills. If the slope is steep, the automatic will downshift into a gear lower for better torque. It isn't very difficult to drive with AMT on hill.

I own a Polo GT TSI with DSG gearbox and a Honda City with CVT gearbox, so some observations :1) To a great extent it depends on the power/torque of the engine. The transmission can do only so much. The DSG has the ability to do lightning quick shifts so you can out-accelerate slow moving cars. Again, the Polo GT has 105 BHP and 175NM torque, that helps a lot. Plus it has the sport mode to utilise all of it, and traction control. Coming to the City, while the CVT may have a rubber band effect on straight roads, the City's overall engine size (1500 cc), power (119PS) helps mask some of it. On the hills, the CVT is actually quite advantageous because when you raise the rpm, the wheels are immediately "loaded" with the power since it is an uphill slope. There is no loss of efficiency that is associated with a clutch disengage/engagement like a manual transmission. In fact, to some extent its better than an equivalent DSG gearbox (my personal experience).
ii) The bigger problem on ghat roads are slow moving trucks which obstruct the view of the oncoming vehicles. But you can get past them easier in automatics.
iii) It is important to do some engine braking on sharp downhill slopes. The Polo DSG allows you to use Sport mode or manual mode for hill descent, but its not a full manual. It will take over automatic control if the gearbox is strained beyond a limit. The City CVT offers paddle shifts and better engagement of the virtual gear ratios for engine braking.
Overall, driving automatics in hilly sections is quite engaging IF your car has adequate power.
How is the honda city CVT overall on highways? Does the cvt irritate by revving and making noise when trying to overtake? Also what's the mileage you get(Minimum and maximum).
@@ArunArun-rv5bn The City CVT is good for sustained cruising between 100-120 kph. If you slow down to say, 70 kph and then accelerate conventionally, the CVT does whine a bit and the response is a bit laggy. However, if you shift the car to Sport mode and use the paddle shift to say, S3/S4 , then you can keep the revs high and let the iVTEC engine do the rest. Its not the same as dropping down to 3rd/4th gear and revving in a manual version, but fairly close. The Sport mode of the DSG Polo is a different beast altogether, because it enables all of the 175NM torque at your disposal. So the occasional manuever to overtake the truck at 70kph is more efficient. But in balance, the City offers a very relaxing and calm cruising experience. The in-city mileage is around 10-11 kpml, and on highways, its around 15 kmpl. The Polo TSI offers slightly superior mileage by around 1-2 kmpl in city and highway conditions.

If you buy maruti amt with hill hold features, you won't feel a thing. It hold for 8-10 seconds even in the steepest hills.
But other amt without hill hold assist will. Make problems specially when there will be bumper to bumper traffic in incline. You must use handbrake in that case otherwise your car will roll back.
For cvt mode automatic, car remains steady in slope. So no worries.
For dca also, car has hill hold.
Even modern day Tata cars with hill hold assist like Tata nexon is not that good to hold the car. It also has a rollback of 6 inchs.
I am. Using swift as well as Tata punch amt. I have peace of mind driving swift on inclines as it never rolls back. But puch does role back 6 inchs on small inclines then picks itself up to drive forward even without hill hold. But failed to do so in steep incline.
No issues with swift even is high inclines.

Hi ...I'm from shillong which is a hill station...you call well imagine the steep up hill roads we have here. ..will the amt car cause any problems climbing such terrains?
Climbing down might be disastrous because, it will tend to run on higher gear, thus by reducing control over the car. Frequent braking maybe necessary. In manual transmission cars we try to engage a lower gear on downhill for better control.

Does car hold 1st gear(or any one gear) if we want to keep it in 1st gear with higher revs? Or will AMT shifts automatically in manual mode too?

Amt downshift automatically depending on rpm but it doesn't upshift automatically on manual mode.
Amt does have manual override mode. It does works as engine breaking while going downhill

Hi I use Nexon zxa+ . What I do on incline is . Hold the break with your left leg . And right leg on accelerator. Gradually lift the left leg from the brake at the same time use right leg to accelerate. In the same ratio. Don't hold both break and accelerator together . Thank me later 😊
@@nj-kh1hc Thanks, i travelled to Uttrakhand and Shimla and Drove more than 300km only on hills, and i must say Sports mode in my tiago NRG is more powerful than i expected. Never used manual mode, even on steep incline, just put sports mode in AMT and it cruises.

@@Rumiesque actually we are not supposed to hold break and accelerator together in any automatic or amt car. Most people use hand brake and accelerator. But I found the method which I said more usefull and practical in day to day basis and in short inclines with less load.

It'd be great to explain the most difficult part.. which is, the vehicle is standing still on a hill (due to traffic) and then it needs to start moving when the traffic becomes clear... How do we use CVT in such situation? My thought is that... the car will be at D state (not N or P) and brakes will be pressed when it's standing still, and as the traffic is becoming clear, the driver only needs to release the brakes slowly and the car will go ahead.. Is there any need to release the brakes quickly and press on the accelerator?
You can use hand brakes instead of normal brake. This will help in ascending by just accelerating
