Hope you had good xmas with family! So happy you are back, and refeshed. Such awesome videos. Love how you share your thoughts about choices while working.
A HUGE money making thing I discovered, while doing harvesting contracts: Let's say your contract is to harvest wheat and bring to to the sale point. What do you do with the straw left on the ground? After the field is harvested and BEFORE you take the last load to the sale point (while the contract is still open), you collect, bail and load up the straw on a flatbed trailer to be delivered later. You complete the contract, collect your payment, then deliver the straw for more money. With regards to role play, perhaps the person who hired you thought is was okay for you to clean up the field when you were done?
With the bailing you will also be able to do the contracts for the bailing, but defo look at prices of the harvester aswell, I'm commenting at 18.05 so you may do later in episode 😂
Welcome back! Hope you had a great Christmas! I would wait with the forage wagon until you can afford the bigger ones of the two. It's a huge increase in space for a little more money. And since you're gonna wait with the purchase until the next harvest anyway, money should not be a problem.
I hope you stay with the silage pit, its fun to watch, most players I watch use a bailer, plus gives you a reason to by a loader in the future, also opens doors to use more advanced equipment in the furture.
I don't know if it's the new graphics or just the contracts you took, but in previous videos I couldn't discern between what you've already covered and what you haven't. Today it was very apparent. As for choosing between a new forage wagon vs a Baling system. I don't know enough, but if using a baling system means you don't have to let it sit for a few months and can sell it right away, maybe that makes sense. I think selling all your silage took ~13 or so trips back and forth so a double size wagon would gut that down to 6 or so trips but there's also the hassle of filling up the silage pit. You've spent a lot of time dealing with that. Might be easier just to put it straight into bales.
I believe the fermenting process takes the same amount of time whether it's in bales or the pit, but yeah I'm starting to get a little frustrated with the pit... You'll have to keep an eye out for the new video coming soon 😉
Awesome video man! Great to have you back. Definitely excited for the next 2 years in game, gonna be a lot of decisions. Instead of just straight swapping, I'd Personally do some testing with the bailer off screen on this playthrough or another save. No point in setting yourself back an entire episode just to try something. Plus I think you will be fine with the bigger wagon since you can more than likely manage with the blade and valtara. I still think it comes back to personal choice over either one being faster because they are both honestly really similar time frames
Thanks for the feedback. I did end up doing some testing with the balers in another save, and there are definitely pros and cons to each. I found harvesting to be slightly faster with the wagon/pit method, but selling was definitely faster with the bales... Still can't decide if I want to switch or not lol
@syrupgames lol completely fair, they make you work for it either way. The problem is, both methods are completely viable because you're getting the crazy price increase for the effort. I actually do square bales now because of the size difference and I can decide to wrap for silage or save grass for sheep/goat.
Welcome back bud glad you had a good Christmas! I’d love to see you really decorate the new homestead with fences and nicely done landscape features etc… I feel like so many content creators skip past making things look good but you for sure pay attention to detail!
That Anderson baler is for those long round bales you keep in the yard to feed your livestock from I believe. Ditch the JD and get a telehandler (with a 3point maybe) for general usage and cart silage with a normal trailer. Will be useful in the future for all sorts of things. Would prefer to see first steps in animals in stead of bales. But you do you.
Thanks for the feedback! I agree about going for animals before baling, pretty sure I'm just going to stay with the silage pit for now... Definitely considering getting a telehandler soon too!
I never use the baler, like you said you spend loads of money and gain no extra income. You'll need the silage bunker anyway further in the game unless you want to turn it into baling simulator. 😊 My cows with the auto feeder go through hay silage grass and straw like there is no tomorrow with bales that would get tedious real quick. I now have 5 Tardis forage wagons sitting there with 260 tons in there of each. Keeps me sane for an in game year or so. 😂 Just fill them back up after each harvest. So imho forget the baling get an extra Tardis forage wagon, good storage option to. Get yourself the forage attachment for the tractor, makes emptying the silage bunker a breeze.
Thanks for the advice! Is the tractor forage attachment in the base game? I saw a mod for that, but the only similar one I found in the stock equipment seemed to be for harvesting only, at least it didn't have the silage icon in the list of accepted materials...
The scoop effectively works as a bucket, so as you push the silages around, it temporarily "fills" before dropping out again, explaining the slight drop in quantity. No weirdness, just a bucket doing bucket things
Glad you bought a land area to set up home base. I found out if you buy a field and use a portion of it for animals, the AI can no longer figure out the remaining portion of the field.
So realistically speaking, if silage is measured in liters (volume) that volume will decrease when you compact it. Then when you start unloading it you reduce the compaction increasing the volume. It should probably be measured in Kg or tons(weight) as that should not change. Not sure how Farming Sim does it but if they are hyper realistic you will lose volume to compaction and regain some of that volume when transporting.
Yeah that is probably the answer, the behavior just seems so inconsistent during compaction it's hard to tell what's going on... Sometimes the compaction level will be increasing, even though the fill level isn't changing at all, and sometimes it's the opposite, where the fill level is decreasing even though the compaction level isn't changing 🤷♂️
I own that land as well. Just be aware there is a huge elevation change from the road to the end of the lot it's a lot more uneven than it looks. That's where I keep my greenhouses due to the close proximity to water and a few production factories.
People get hung up in the past farm stim mind set where there were jobs workers couldn't do such as mowing, windrowing, etc. That's why they are saying things like "put the forage wagon on the back of the mowing tractor". Now that you can have a worker now, it is just better to do the more with the worker and the pick up yourself. Now for the profitability of bailing, it becomes much more profitable to do bailing when you get to the point where your time becomes the product. Start getting into animals or productions where you have to do much more loading and caring and you simply won't have the time to waste on 12 forage wagon loads to fill pit, and 12 more loads to sell. At that point you will profit way more having the large mowers that leave the grass in a windrow, and then do the bailer/wrapper combo, and the auto loading trailer and you'll save so much time compared to the pit.
I did do some testing in another save, and in terms of harvesting, I found my current mower/wagon/pit method was just a little bit faster than even the best mower, baler/wrapper combo, and autoloading wagon. But I did find a huge time savings with bales and the autoloading trailer when it comes to the transporting/selling side, enough that it still makes baling the faster system overall. Definitely considering the switch to baling, but still undecided as it's a pretty big expense
@@syrupgames i would suggest do 2 more harvest with the bunker and save and bite the bullet and get the auto loader trailer, a bailer and wrapper combo. But i would also suggest adding to the list the rear mower as well (will save a ton of time especially if you get the one that puts it into rows for you). With that being said your tractor might be under powered for that one and might need an upgrade in horse power (it might be ok on paper but when it's running it might run slow). Thats my .02 cents good luck 👍. Also for the bails you can toss a nice shed to hold them on the Homestead now that you have it 😉
Some people have complained that the videos are too dark when playing at night, so I usually try to not do too much at night, but sometimes it's unavoidable
Since my last comment, I noticed something interesting. Paying workers to do a job may take some of the money you could have made away from you. We all know this, however, it's all about making as much money per day/month as possible, right? Let's say an average job is paying 2K. I can do the job in 20 minutes, real time. That is 100 per real time minute, or 6K/hr. Remember these numbers, as we will use this simple example as a basis for comparison. Instead of doing it myself, I hire a worker to do the job. Depending on the job - and the version of the game you have - a worker makes between 100 - 500 per hour. For our purposes, we will use the higher 500/hr rate. Although it may have taken me 20 real time minutes to do the job, the worker will work slower. How slow or fast is generally based on the tractor being used. Like you, a worker on a cheap 80 hp tractor will take considerably longer than a worker on a 400 hp tractor. But, from what I have seen, with the same tractor, I may take 20 minutes and the worker takes closer to 30. Therefore, my potential earnings of 2000 is down to 1750, after paying the worker. Add in the fact it takes him longer, this works out to 3500/hr. I'm screwing myself out of 2,500/hr? But alas, we forget... He's working, earning that 3.5K/hr, while I am also working at the same time. Or, perhaps I am free to work my own fields or do some shopping, while still making some money. BUT... Here is where it gets real interesting... Let's say I have and extra 4 medium - of at least 225 hp or better - tractors (I also have 1 large and 2 small, but they don't count right now.) I'm fumbling around, doing whatever it is I am doing. Meanwhile, I've driven one tractor to a job and set it up with a worker. I use the game feature of switching immediately to another vehicle, landing on my 2nd tractor. After driving this tractor to a 2nd job, setting it up with a worker, I repeat the process with tractors 3 & 4. What do I do with those extra 4 tractors, when the job is done? I either: 1. get them new jobs. 2. leave them or 3. drive them to a more convenient location. Eventually, all 4 tractors will be scattered strategically around the map. One worker may be "assigned" to jobs in the NE corner, another to the SE, another to the SW and the last to the NW corners of the map. Oh, there's 3 jobs in the NE? No problem, the NE corner worker has a busy day ahead of him. No more driving from one end of the map to another. Leaving a tractor in the heart of a selected quadrant of the map? Think of it as, "allowing your worker to take the tractor home with him." At this point, not only do I have the advantage of being able to bounce to various locations on the map at will, while I am doing whatever I am doing, with 4 jobs going at once, I am making - worst case scenario - 14,000/hr or about 235/min even when I am AFK. Oh, you need more tractors on your field? No problem, either buy a new one or drive one (or two) over to your property - worry about replacing it later. But it all makes me wonder: If I have 4 contracts actively being done at the same time, what would happen if I had 40 tractors and 40 workers going at the same time? The only problem with that is, you will never see 40 jobs available at the same time. So, for now, 3 or 4 workers doing my contracts - while I do whatever I am doing - will make sure I will always have some income, even during the growing seasons. Another cute, "fast travel," trick I learned are the dirt cheap vehicles. You know, the tiny run-abouts or cheap cars... Your field is in field 12 and the place you want to go is field 67 - on the other side of the map? No problem, you have a used Chevy you bought for 2400, parked in a parking lot, just down the street from it. Think of these dirt cheap vehicles as, "fast travel way points." Yet, if realistic role play is what you truly desire, you can forego the fast travel way points, but using the, "I allow my workers to bring their work tractors home with them," concept still holds true to RPG.
One thing you don't seem to have taken into account is the Capital expenditure. 4 tractors, 4 sets of equipment. There are opportunity costs there. That money might be better spend expanding your farms or buying higher end equipment. Sure, if you have it the equipment lying around you might as well set up a worker to use it, but I'm not sure I'd go hard to set that up.
@@loudent2 You do have a very valid point. Bare in mind, I am not spend a lot on these tractors, as I usually buy them on sale. I figure, I'm not driving them and the workers don't seem to mind. As for my time and money, bringing imagination to virtual life was considerably more challenging than I thought. "I'M MAKING AN APPLE FARM!" With bees for honey, sugar beets for sugar. I can make ciders and juices, branch out into bakeries and distilleries, etc. This was the fantasy. Then there is the reality of it all. With both greenhouses and orchards, I have to do it all. There is nothing for the workers to do. With my fields laying nearly empty; already fully prepared, in wait for planting season - 4 months away - save for the one plot that is growing grass, there is not a thing available for a worker, even if I wanted to hire one! To top it all off, I spent the last 2 (in game) months simply prepping my apples, tomatoes and strawberries. In total, filling up all the required items, cost: 120 big bags of compost; 120,000 liters of water and 24 crates of special fruit fertilizer. Forget the cost in money, can you imagine how many trips I took to the supply place. PLUS, with no super strength, I had to struggle thru my mouse dyslexia, where pulling down somehow makes the forklift go up and you have to make sure you hit the right button or the bag doesn't drop, the entire forklift does! Nearly 16 real time hours doing this frustrating nonsense, only to realize, "I'm going to need to do this again in a couple months, and workers can't help me." (Mouse dyslexia: it's a thing. I need to use the mouse upside down). So yes, you are right. I had the luxury of having extra tractors I was not using. I only needed one to make dozens of trips back and forth to the supply store. What happens to the rest of them? They sit there. May as well make some money with the workers. But, looking back, it would have been a whole lot easier, far less frustrating and less costly to simply grow wheat.
The only added income by going to bales at this point would be unlocking baling contracts imo. I think the money would be better spent on progressing beyond just silage. The only real benefit to doing silage bales to me is feeding cows TMR. If the silage is just to be sold then the pit is the best way. Especially with you wanting to use the autostacker and everything. You will get more than 14 square or 24 round bales off of your field each harvest, so you would have to unload the autostacker mid harvest, and then spend time either spreading the fermented pile back out to collect or invest into a bale trailer as well to be able to collect them for sale, which stacking might be too high for the JDs loader arms. A lot of added work for no benefit imo
@@syrupgames Another thought I just had is maybe instead of a bigger forage wagon, invest into conveyors and use the bigger tipper trailer you have for the sales? The little forage wagon is fine for just shuttling to the pit, and a larger one will probably make you catch up to the mower. It would be cheaper than a new one and faster to load the silage to sell it since there's no chance of getting stuck
Saw a guy making a overview about repaircost. it isnt liniear, and more hours result in higher damage compared to newer stuff, with same repaircost at same damagelvl. detoriation speed reach its max at 50h as far as i remember.
The only contract related mod I'm using is called "More Contracts" It just removes the 3 contract limit so you can accept as many as you want at a time
is there a price difference for selling bales compared to just what your doing now? I think that would be a good to know before making the choice of doing bales vs silage as you could spend that money on doing something new that makes more money ect though it woudl be interesting to see you doing something new, and what about squares as well instead of rounds? im not sure on any of the pricing ect as ive never played the game
The sell price is the same whether it's baled or in loose form. I do get a slightly better yield using the forage wagon because it has the silage additive, which isn't an option for most balers. It's not a huge difference though, on my current field I think it would amount to about one extra trailer load, so maybe an extra ~$6K per harvest. Time savings would be the biggest reason to switch, but I don't think it would be a big time difference on the harvest side. Bales would make selling significantly faster though, as you can move a lot more volume with a bale trailer than even the biggest forage or tipper trailers. A square baler would be nice because they just continuously push out bales instead of having to stop and unload every time, but they are significantly more expensive than the round balers, and there is no option for a baler/wrapper combo like there is with the round baler, so I'm not sure it would actually be any faster for silage production. The autoloading trailer for the square bales is more expensive too. Currently editing a new video where I discuss a lot of the pros and cons of the balers, so keep an eye out for that!
It's VERY lame, but you can buy lettuce pallets from the train stop and sell them for a 1k profit during peak prices. It's how I got enough to get a combine in my playthrough.
I hope you had a good Christmas. What GPU do you have now? 3:11 I normaly fly around the map with the build-mode drone to get the shaders loding, bevor i start playing.
Yes, Christmas was great, hope yours was good too! I upgraded from a 6650XT to a 7800XT. Allowed me to basically max out the graphics settings, plus I saw a massive improvement in render time for this video, so I'm pretty happy with it! That's a great tip for loading the shaders, I'll have to try that next time!
AI workers feel slow, but having the contract progress bars in the corner show you just how freaking slow they are lol. Mowing a smaller field than you are cultivating, and starting first but still only 25% done by the time you finish
I know it's not up for a vote but you asked what we thought, I'd say 1 more silage batch with small wagon and the pit. The sell the wagon and blade, and pit and do the bailer wrapper combo, get your time back and maybe let's go full bore into a combine so we can get into grain. Plus with the pit your kinda maxed out on grass unless you double down on a second pit which would be a bit of a mistake.
ps when your looking at sheds check out the ez shed with the solar panels. i just watched a blokes video on it. it takes 3.1 years on avg for it to pay itself off. a shed that pays for itself!!!
I've been doing some experimenting in another save and both have pros and cons. I would say it's a lot more work if you are manually collecting and stacking the bales with a loader, but the autoloading bale trailer makes that process much easier. At the end of the day I would say harvesting is easier with the wagon and pit method, but selling is significantly faster with bales (if you have the autoloading trailer) because you can move a lot more volume at once with bales vs. any other trailer with loose silage
Oh that didn't actually damage the tractor, it's just that the repair bar shows the most damaged thing you're attached to, so when I hooked up to the trailer it just switched from showing the tractor damage to the trailer damage

Yes, definitely! A big part of why I went with this land instead of buying the established homestead is so I can build it up exactly how I want it!
Really enjoy this series. Keep em comming! :D
l love the series, look forward to the videos coming out!
My cows with the auto feeder go through hay silage grass and straw like there is no tomorrow with bales that would get tedious real quick.
@syrupgames i think it's a giants mod not sure. But it works brilliantly. Emptied the bunker in 2 minutes.
The scoop effectively works as a bucket, so as you push the silages around, it temporarily "fills" before dropping out again, explaining the slight drop in quantity. No weirdness, just a bucket doing bucket things
Yeah I got that part, the weirdness was that the total amount actually increased slightly after using the blade 🤷♂️
Glad you bought a land area to set up home base. I found out if you buy a field and use a portion of it for animals, the AI can no longer figure out the remaining portion of the field.
Oh that's interesting, thanks for the tip!
Thumbnail looks good! Can't wait to watch later!
I own that land as well. Just be aware there is a huge elevation change from the road to the end of the lot it's a lot more uneven than it looks. That's where I keep my greenhouses due to the close proximity to water and a few production factories.
Thanks for the heads up!
Great video keep up the good work!
Thanks!
This is the correct answer 👏 right here. At some point your time will become more important 💯
Also for the bails you can toss a nice shed to hold them on the Homestead now that you have it 😉
Big ups mr syrup
Nice to see the night time game play. Most just skip though.
Some people have complained that the videos are too dark when playing at night, so I usually try to not do too much at night, but sometimes it's unavoidable
welcome back
Thanks, good to be back!
Think of it as, "allowing your worker to take the tractor home with him."
At this point, not only do I have the advantage of being able to bounce to various locations on the map at will, while I am doing whatever I am doing, with 4 jobs going at once, I am making - worst case scenario - 14,000/hr or about 235/min even when I am AFK.
All good points! Very similar to my own thought process for why I've avoided baling so far
Thanks for the tips!
Maybe a second bunker would come in handy.
That is definitely something I'm considering!
yippie! new video!
Which if any mod are you using for the contacts?
The only contract related mod I'm using is called "More Contracts" It just removes the 3 contract limit so you can accept as many as you want at a time
What tractor are you using to cultivate? I’ve been looking for it because I like that it goes 40mph.
I'm mostly using the Deutz-Fahr Agrostar for cultivating, it's in the medium tractor category
is there a price difference for selling bales compared to just what your doing now?
@@syrupgames ive pretty much been looking every morning and night , i think i have an addiction problem :P
It's VERY lame, but you can buy lettuce pallets from the train stop and sell them for a 1k profit during peak prices. It's how I got enough to get a combine in my playthrough.
Yeah I was aware of that, haven't used it yet though as it seems a little too easy for this challenge playthrough...
Haha yeah they are painfully slow, they waste so much time with horribly inefficient turns
man i was waiting on u .. i was actully worried xD are u okey
Sorry for the delay! Should be back to regular uploads now
what will be usuable for your animals in the future .. buy that
Can you not collect and sell the cut grass from the missions?
no
Nope, I actually tried that in an earlier episode, but it didn't work
When you’re using the pressure washer it shows the dirt level, is this a mod?
Yes, it's the "Info Extender" mod
I know it's not up for a vote but you asked what we thought, I'd say 1 more silage batch with small wagon and the pit. The sell the wagon and blade, and pit and do the bailer wrapper combo, get your time back and maybe let's go full bore into a combine so we can get into grain. Plus with the pit your kinda maxed out on grass unless you double down on a second pit which would be a bit of a mistake.
Yoo new video
why does everyone want bales? it seems like heaps more work
ps when your looking at sheds check out the ez shed with the solar panels. i just watched a blokes video on it. it takes 3.1 years on avg for it to pay itself off. a shed that pays for itself!!!
pps and a dog
I've been doing some experimenting in another save and both have pros and cons. I would say it's a lot more work if you are manually collecting and stacking the bales with a loader, but the autoloading bale trailer makes that process much easier. At the end of the day I would say harvesting is easier with the wagon and pit method, but selling is significantly faster with bales (if you have the autoloading trailer) because you can move a lot more volume at once with bales vs. any other trailer with loose silage
Anyone else find their way here from distractible?
Repair your equipment. Tractors and other vehicles will run slowere and eventually just stop.
bro watch the damage u cost yourself at min 24 when u connect the tractor
Oh that didn't actually damage the tractor, it's just that the repair bar shows the most damaged thing you're attached to, so when I hooked up to the trailer it just switched from showing the tractor damage to the trailer damage
Lordminion777 got me here.
That's awesome, thanks for checking it out!
@syrupgames he talked about it on distarctible, as a fan of fs series I had to chek it out.
Welcome back!
Thanks! Excited to be back!
