- How an external GY6 Reverse gearbox works. These are commonly found on 150cc Gy6 buggies and go carts. This one is from a Carter Talon but the Hammerhead twister and Sunl Alias are essentially the same. There are 2 styles of external reverse gearbox, this one being the smaller. They both function in the same manner, utilizing a planetary gearset.

Really a clever design.
The best were the first generation 2 strokes. What changes on them is the actual rotation of the crank. It started normally forward but the engine would also start and run backwards for reverse.
Thanks man
Can I put a spacer between the Moyer and the reverse?
Very good video,! i see that the most of GY6 says up to 120-150cc.. I have an ATV thats 250cc (Honda engine twin 125 parallel pistons) with no reverse gear.. i am thinking of setup something like this... its able to do that? or it will be destroyed?
can this be added to a spider box that doesnt already have one installed? will the chain still line up?
So my honda trx450s atv shifts but it's like everything is in reverse. When I activate the reverse with the cable it shifts and it displays the reverse light but the wheels goes forward. Then when I upshift it goes into neutral. When I upshift again, all the gears shift but the tires goes backwards. All the gears. What could be wrong???
Nice video. Thank you. Do you have a video of connecting the cable to the reverse box and shift lever. Getting ready to work on a friends machine and it seems the cable he ordered is not correct. I will have to see. Thanks again appreciate the video.
Hey I bought the aftermarket one for my gy6 and it feels like the spring is too strong for what it needs to do. It requires so much effort to pull the lever.
? On a yamoto 150cc this gear box the drive works fine what's causing the reverse to not work?
Nicely done.
What type of oil/ grease do you recommend and Where to apply and not apply?
Thanks you
I just use multipurpose EP grease and pack the bearings and entire inside of the gearcase. I specifically like valvoline synthetic or valovline moly fortified multi purpose.
wat does it mean when it is hard to pull out for the reverse
great video sir. any chance you know what size the o-ring is? or know where i can find out? I'm having trouble finding the size online.
I used one out of an old trans rebuild kit.
My buggy has a tendency to not shift back into forward with the engine running. If I shut it off and restart it the forward is engaged. I have not torn it apart but plan to. What should I look for?
Check for a sticking cable or old burnt grease in the carrier itself
Anybody know what model this is. I have it on the go cart and I can't figure the model out
How do you get the gearbox out
Question, If you're still out there... the two halves of this revers assembly... what holds them together? Mine keeps separating . The two halves, just enough not to mostly go into gear. Obviously the chain side is fixed.
Its been a while but it looks like it's just the position of the chain that keeps them together. your shift cable may be allowing the spring on the shift fork to push too far and push the case half out. if thats not it I would consider adding a washer between the reverse box and the engine output. It should push on the bolts that hold the sprocket on and keep the case together. Only issue is itll rub in reverse, forward will be fine.
@@pfun41 your right, needing to add washer to create a distance for the right size washer will prevent rub. Thank you.
How many HP do you think this unit could take?I am thinking about using this with a sled clutch in a surface drive for a boat so I would be able to have a netural and reverse.
I have no idea but I think the 150 is supposed to be like 8 Hp or something.
A youtuber by the name of nick coride has a ninja 750 running through one of these. He has videos of it functioning and somehow not obliterating itself.
Hi v v v v vrey good teching
I have the same chassis and the 6 screws kept breaking, I would like to know what screws you use, what diameter and what hardness
The bolts for the sprocket? Grade 8 if they keep breaking.
What size are the bolts that attach the bracket to the gearbox?
I'd guess M8 or m10
I want to figure out to to make something like this but for a pedal car or velomobile whatever you want to call it. I'm looking for ideas for a project to build a pedal powered e bike basically which will have a lightweight all weather body and I want to do something where it does have a pedal assist electric motor a bicycle gearbox and a reverse gear setup.
Hi, I have the same reverse gear setup on an ATV. The only difference might be instead of a cable coming out, I have a straight hand lever attached. I'm wondering what might be wrong if the shift fork shaft keeps popping out when driving forward... It usually happens under load or higher rpms. It pops out for a second, disengages forward gear. Causing a terrible jerk when bouncing back in forward gear. Any ideas? I thought I would ask before having to take the whole gearbox off to inspect. It's a pain of a job with the location and frame...
You'll need to take it out to repair it anyway. It's going to be an internal issue.
My guestimate is that those forwards locking teeth have been rounded from use or/and from forcing gear into place, so little vibration and force slips them out of the place. Test the hardness of the teeth with file and if those are not hardened, just weld fill to teeth and file into form, or replace that part/parts. Ether way you need to take it out for inspection anyways.
@@pfun41 Hello, is the forward position clockwise? In other words, does this mount to an engine that spins clockwise? (looking at it from the pull start side) If so, is it only this model or do all the planetary reverse boxes to that?
@@matthewpauls2498 This doesn't have a pull start so I don't know which side you're talking about.
@@pfun41 my mistake, i meant the non-output side of the engine where a pull start would be
Is there a way to take the reverse box off and just have a sprocket?
Yes just buy a stock sprocket
How and where can we buy this type of reverse gearbox trans?, I want to have this one for my honda supremo 150cc., pls..!
Ebay
Hi me and my brother have this same go cart and it broke when we were riding it it was going fine then just stopped going forward It runs but we push the gas and nothing happens We have a forward and reverse and it doesnt do anything My dad says he doesnt want to spend money on it do you think you know whats wrong with it? Thank you
Probably a blown belt or work clutch
@@liamcondon225 you are right it was a blown belt. i whined and complained until my dad had it fixed.
would that fit on the engine of a big scooter???
requires a different ouput shaft.
see on mine its hard to pull out the the shift fork out that connects the cable too wat would cause that it feels like its spring loaded but by looking at this one there isnt no spring in it
It's spring loaded, and it's a pretty heavy spring. It fits down in the hole the shift fork shaft goes into.
@@pfun41 i didnt see no spring on it when u had it apart
@@pfun41 yea i see i took it apart i think my spring may be lil much it is hard to pull out to connected the cable too so im trying to find a smaller spring cause it cant pull out by hand u have to use fice crips to just get it out long enough to out cable in
if there is a easyer way please tell anything that make it easyer
@@davidnationjr3988 I have the same problem. It feels like the spring is way too strong for what it needs to do. Any luck? Did you find a lighter spring?
@@alindragulindotcom no i didnt but new ones run for bout 187 on amazon that i seen but i end up selling the gocart i had with the gy6 motor on it
Where do you buy these because I need one
Ebay or maybe Amazon.
Thank u buddy I was wondering how it worked I just bought one today with all the shifting equipment but no cable
@Kyle Isaiah what does watching movies have to do with a reverse gearbox works on a gy6?
These don't have a neutral position?
Nope.
@@pfun41 thanks so down is forward up reverse. Trying to get it to work for grandson.
Ik I’m a little late to the video but I’m having a problem where when it’s in forward everything is locked up and doesn’t want to turn, then when I pull out the shaft to make it in reverse everything is free and turns without issue, still no movement when you use the gas pedal though, only by manually turning the wheels, any help??
Assuming its the same model, the main ring gear where the sprocket mounts may be too far out of the housing and jamming on something in forward.
price sir...???
De unde se poate cumpara
I'm asking all over the internet but if anyone has a 2005 explorer Joyner ATV I'm trying to find parts for it mainly this one but if anyone knows anything about them thank you
I hava pies sir
Where can I buy one
Ebay, amazon, any place that deals in parts. They won't just swap onto an engine that never came with one though. It uses a longer output shaft.
pfun41 ya think it would work on a 212 cc predator or will it get over torqued?
@@waterfelon If you can find a way to connect it it should work.
pfun41 thanks I’ll take it into consideration then
Ur mobile no ....and what is price
