My Mom was a short order cook for years and taught me this same way. Then, my Dad (who was an engineer) taught me the #1 rule of engineering "don't fix what ain't broken!" So, I don't try to fix something cooking-wise that already works. Great video and thanks!
Great comment, thaks for watching
looking good!!!!
Thanks for watching!
Way too thick of a cut
I am showing proper technique not aesthetics
@@ChefJohnPolitteItsOnlyFood thank you. It was still a helpful video.

Thank you so much this really helped me out a lot everyone loved there burgers 👍
You’re welcome 😊
I was wondering what i was doing wrong...thanks Chef!
Happy to help! Thanks for watching!
How did you get to the centre of the onion? First there was the whole onion, then you put that aside and grabbed an already cut to almost half onion for slices large enough for the burger. What happened to the first bit of the onion?
I re-watched the video and can't see what you mention, answer me with the time this happens
It never even occurred to me to cut it the wrong way...
some people don't know
I always sliced my onion like that, but I had no idea why I did. Just dumb luck I guess - Thank you Chef, I do appreciate the lesson.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you John for the correct way to do a slice onion for a hamburger! I am a novice at 64, recently divorced. I learning how to prep the Basics my meals. Help me, help me Rhonda!!!

Makes all the difference when eating a burger

Indeed
Been wanting to learn how to make a better burger, thanks for this
You are quite welcome
I used to cut onions any which way for a burger until I learned pole to pole from serious eats. Nice vid my friend.

I think I'd slice my hand open the right way
I appreciate you watching..good luck!
“Hopefully most of yall have gone to school so you know what this is “ took me 😂😂😂😂😂😂
You would be surprised by what I have seen over the years, even buying in presliced tomatoes and onions
Thanks Chef. Clear, simple instructions that makes sense to an idiot like me! I've been cutting onions wrong for years, now I know why. 😆😆😆👍

I am here in 2021 hello
Greetings! Thanks for watching!
If you cut an onion on a red chopperboard...I assume you marinate your steaks on the white one,am I right?🤔
I don't really pay attention to the color of the cutting board and their assigned codes. I wash the boards and the counter and sanitize after each use. I was cooking long before this was implemented in the food service industry. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment
Hey! question, do i have to season the vegs (tomato, onion, lettuce and that good stuff) for the burger? or they go natural? sometimes i feel that they lack flavour, thanks in advice! great video
A little kosher salt and black pepper is a good idea to bring out the natural flavors. Great question, thamks for watching!
I think my issue be that I cut mine too thick because the onion be over powering the burger. Great video
I appreciate you watching. Have a great day!
How to cut it straight though by hand? Usually I start off fine then it gets more slanted as a slice more of the onion
Use a good knife and long even slices slowly. Practice😀 practice practice
my work cuts julianne for burgers whats the difference in effect between that and the industry standard in terms of taste etc
none what so ever, thanks for watching.
It really grinds my gears when i get a burger with diced onions on it. Also you can saute the onions on the inside and just lightly cook the 2 outer rings so they are still crunchy and can hold the sauted onions in place.
Thaks for watching! I love a good crunchy onion on my burger, and I love sauteed, but when I want sauteed I get a patty melt. Thaks for watching
TY SIR!!!
welcome!
I'm not seeing any places cut the onion this way anymore. But it makes so much sense.
I appreciate you watching, have a great day!
Thank you for the info. I guess I never really thought about it in terms of actually biting into a burger. What's your opinion on diced onions that we see on some burgers from major chains or hot dog garnish. Cheers
I let the chain restauarant do their thing. Whenit comes to my kitchen I want to see properly slice onions. I can't stand coming in to the kitchen and seeing ziplocks of onions cut any which way, and later find out it;s because someone requested onions on their hamburger, (I work in senior living) hence the training and the video. It also is nice to have everyone trained to do it properly so their is a standard set and it is being cut the same way no matter what time and no matter who is cooking.
Personally I prefer diced, and on my patty melts I like the grilled onions-Thanks for the awesome questions and thanks again for watching
Isn't this common sense
you would think so
Not to everybody. Are you that dumb?
Thank you for the GREAT videos! I have learned a few new tricks and reinforced a Ton of stuff I do in the Kitchen every day. For us home cooks, a Mandolin/V slicer works quite well to substitute for an electric meat slicer. Nice even slices and usable right to the last slice of onion. Quick too! I slice a batch and store in a sealed container for ready assembly to a plate.
great idea, thanks for watching
Thanks I'm going to make a veggie burger with onions now.
Hope you enjoy! Thanks for watching!
But how do you not cry
I'm dead inside...lol...thanks for watching!
Good sharp knifes make you cry less.
So should we add just the rings or whole slice?
the whole slice or a couple of rings, its up to you. Thanks for watching

If someone needs to learn how to do simple onion slices, they should NOT be opening a food stall or a restaurant.
Constant training and coaching. Sometimes a cook never gets taught the right way
That's correct.
