Julian is on one my favorite players and a great guy: I've met him after a show a while back and had some questions about some technique things regarding his etudes and he took a lot of time to show me how to play it and help me with my problems playing the pieces!
I just seen his trio perform live. He played this Tele. I can’t believe how above earth they are, like they literally belong to another world... and I’m a sucker for rock and electronica. I feel like I just seen Mozart, Bach and Liszt... I’m speechless. My standards have been smashed, blown, disintegrated.
Julian Lage is not only a quadruple monster player.........he’s one of the most genuinely kind and good hearted musicians that I’ve ever met. Just a good human being. I was taken aback by his attention to his listeners and his willingness to answer so many questions in depth. Julian loves music and people........and he’s a master at giving his music to all of us on a listening and learning level.
With his dad, Julian used to come to the music store I worked at in Sonoma County Ca. back in the day. He was probably about 5 years old as well as him growing into adulthood. Kinda funny seeing him as a man with a beard now...lol!!!! And yes he was a virtuoso even back then as a little child. He was groomed to be a guitarist........
Great hearing Julian talk bout Nacho and the Blackguard book which is phenomenal. More importantly I only just started discovering Julian’s music which is incredible beyond words.
Amazing! This guy is the antithesis of the instagram virtuoso who rehearsed something for hours and released the perfect snippet. He revels in the moment and brings us along for the ride. Thank you, what a great video!
Amazing Tele sound :-) What I really like with Julian Lage is that - similiar to Gabor Szabo 50 years ago - he is trying to explore new territorry for Jazz guitar playing. Impressive!
that part when they talk about minimalist setup, guitar into amp... makes me regret selling my Vox AC4C1-12 that I only played with an overdrive pedal, to buy a boss Katana head and cab... but, in some way, i make sense, now I plug my guitar directly into the amp... I have this thought about building the ultimate Tele with no knobs or switch, only one bridge pickup, one tone, one volume... and deal with it!!
You have Julian Lage ready to answer any questions. First question: will one of his albums come out on vinyl?!? Not anything about how he voices chords or constructs lines. Add to that the antiquated tech that vinyl represents, the next question should be when his transcriptions will be released on stone tablet...
@@SammyMakepeace Most of the time a good player can make a guitar sound good. I understand there are tons of boutique tele clones that are amazing guitars, I just didn’t like it here.
I can hear the missing transients. The mic is absolutely missing this part of the tone. You need a room mic with this type of small tone to pick up those breathy airy beginnings and ends. You can’t really even hear his reverb. I think the problem is the set up and playing is VERY dynamic and the mix is compressing that and just picking up the stronger parts of the sound
Seriously? I'm at home right now, so not the best monitoring but any tone issues are clearly with either / both the room and mic placement OR something is literally broken. Do you hear the intermittent distortion / pops / clicks in the left channel? Definitely not on my end as other sources are bringing that. Having said that, this isn't Premier's main gig. They're known for their Rig Rundown series. If this same performance had been recorded by Tiny Desk for example, there would have been a world of difference.

That's dope 👍
Legend has it that Mr Rogers had a one night stand with a guitar and 9 months later Julian Lage was born.
Unbeliable playing from Julian and Jorge Roeder, one of the best doublebass tones and melodic playing you could hear... thanks for the video!
THIS guys the real deal. Love him
As a person and player.

3 years later. Same thing just happened to me

Julian, amazing player and person, one of my favorites!!! Jorge is amazing too !!! I love their joy and how well they know each other.

Tall Toad?
Stanroy, He was just a youngster, a wee little lad. Funny how time really does fly. Nice to see him doing well. He seems well adjusted too. Win!
That double bass player stole the show. What a tone
Did not expect to hear he’s doing a metal project with Trevor Dunn. What cool news!
whaaaaaat
Oh wow... thanks for mentioning this!
Still can't get my head wrapped around this. Good for both of em.
Thanks for doing this, PG! Always wonderful to hear Julian talk.
I met him once in Amsterdam and he was so nice!
Great feeling between Jason and Julian. Wonderful interview.
Best wishes
Julian Lage and Blake Mills should record together.
Brian Blade on drums, this dude on bass. Bliss.
What an amazing bass player, and it couldn’t be different to be playing with Julian...
Gosh damn he’s so good and his tone is out of this world and when he really digs in how it opens up is just amazing!
Great hearing Julian talk bout Nacho and the Blackguard book which is phenomenal. More importantly I only just started discovering Julian’s music which is incredible beyond words.
Wish I would have picked up a copy of that book before they went crazy in price
Yep, Julian is amazing. What can I say
The track he played first, Tomorrow is the Question, is in his most recent recording Love Hurts. Truly a virtuoso and a great human being.
Amazing! This guy is the antithesis of the instagram virtuoso who rehearsed something for hours and released the perfect snippet. He revels in the moment and brings us along for the ride.
Thank you, what a great video!
They work flawlessly together, good vibes
Incredible talent and his musical brain is so interesting, can listen to him talk for hours about music.
3:23 clipped like crazy on that louder setting
Beautiful playing and great interview. Glad they had Jason there :)
Just beautiful :)
Delighted to hear that Julian has discovered Gretsch; hope to hear more of that.
So much pure joy between these two when they're playing together!
thank you for this video. What a great player! Great interview!
great great great!! what a great player and sure seems like a nice guy too.
When I saw Julian not playing the Tele, at first I was put off, but now I can see this Gretsch takes grit much more gracefully
The 1953 _Gretsch, Duo Jet_ is the guitar played in the _Tomorrow Is The Question (Official Video)_ clip :)
He's surely one of the most gifted guitarists ever. He can literally do everything.
he cant play Flamenco
The L I C C 39:36
Artistic genius. I get great joy hearing him play.
Truly wonderful guitarist. Inspiring.
Well done and thanks for sharing brother!
This is electric guitar at its best --- tone, technique, taste, etc. etc. etc.
Worlds Fair is my favorite album! It would feel like Christmas Day if it came out on vinyl!
Julian is a master at his craft. Listen to John Zorn’s Insurrection to hear him at eleven.
They recently recorded the second Insurrection. Can't wait to hear it!
Yeah, I saw that! Super excited too.
Had no idea. Thanks.
Damn... thank you so much for turning me onto that. Incredible album
obsessed with my Teles but that Gretsch is out of this world

Went and see him in Germany. Every note is perfect.
Someone in the live chat asked what string gauge he uses on the Telecaster. He plays D’Addario .011s
Thanks! Always wondered
if Julian Lage and Guthrie Govan made some music together, i can die peacefully ❤️
I think they were expecting some applause at the end guys. C'mon, it was a great performance!
YES! A NEW JAZZ ALBUM!
Wonderful !
he loves to quote the flintstones
What a nice guy
what kinda off tele is that? the name of it?
He reminds me of Sco' alot at times
nylonsteel yeah he’s got the edge that Sco’s playing has with all the fearlessness
Mad Skills!!!!
killing!
beautiful
Amazing
Jorge Roeder, bass
what were the books or essays he was talking about? i couldn't understand the name?
Who made this Big 1 pedal?
What kind of guitar strap is that?
I legit thought Paul Gilbert would jam with him lol
Here’s hoping!
most fundamental guitar guy
Where can we get the essays mentioned at 34:50? Thanks!
Just look up john Zorn julian lage 20 observations about the guitar I googed it and found it
LOL why did that guy leave at the beginning?
man what are these "frisell essays" he referred to ?

What amp is that?
Julian's voice is about as nice as his guitar tone
Speaks a little bit like Michael Jackson. Great artist though .
Deluxe Reverb maybe?
What use your pickup?
joe bonamassa
I didn't catch it. Anyone know what fender amp he was playing?
I am guessing maybe a Deluxe Reverb based on the footprint and when they talk about the two channels?
Saw him a few weeks ago and he was using a "65 Blackface Deluxe!
Custom built “Magic Amplifiers” I think he said Vibrolux model
Magic Amps Vibro Deluxe. Kind of a shame it was the only part of the rig that they didn't get a decent shot of. Julian I think has several Magic Amps.
Right, Magic Vibro Deluxe, though according to their web site they're discontinued: www.magicamps.com/VibroDeluxe.cfm
Cat Stevens is a much better bass player than I would’ve expected.
click-bait, no Paul Gilbert..
Thank god.
Who else came here with wide -eyed anticipation on the assumption that "PG" was refering to Paul Gilbert? Sigh... Lmao.
Maybe someday
Not crazy about the tone of the fake tele. Would prefer a Jazz box. Bass was really good.
i actually thought similar. he should have tried a les paul. i love the les paul's cleans.
"Fake" Tele?
@@mattrogers1946 ok replica.
Have you listened to a proper recording of his 'fake' tele?
@@SammyMakepeace Most of the time a good player can make a guitar sound good. I understand there are tons of boutique tele clones that are amazing guitars, I just didn’t like it here.
Talks about sounding "two dimensional" - proceeds to jam with awful two dimensional tone.....meh.... 😬 Sure he's a great player but a hipster no less.
Got all that from one vid with two jazz songs in it? LOL
Try... ruclips.net/video/wu_tuy7Lv6E/видео.html or ruclips.net/video/8a3qAp81vY8/видео.html
Kyle Jernigan I'm very familiar with this guys career Kyle, but yeah, I have superhero powers and a great set of ears.
