Girls with adhd typically fly under the radar because it presents differently. I did my doctoral research on the overlapping characteristics of twice exceptional children: those who have overlapping learning disabilities with giftedness. One of the biggest takeaways from my research is that the affective nature (or emotional well-being) of students and children is improved when we highlight their strengths and gifts at the same time we come along side them and work on areas of challenge. This whole topic is a huge passion for me. I myself missed every single recess from 2nd to 4th grade because I could not complete my assignments, yet I was reading at a highschool level by age eight. I credit my parents with giving me strategies and allowing me to pursue my interests and strengths, which led to becoming a Doctor of Education. I share about this on my channel as well as providing interactive learning strategies.

Bless you! And I spent most of my second grade after school because I did not complete my seat work. I struggled with learning to read. By the end of Third grade I was reading proficiently and haven’t stopped. I too credit my parents and my school. This was in the early 60’s and at a Catholic school no less. My first grade teacher identified I was struggling. They provided reading intervention every day for about 30 minutes. We were pulled out as a group. I was pulled out from 1st to 3rd grade. And I attended summer school. My dad enrolled me in the Beginner Reading Books subscription series(Dr. Suess books). My mom took me to the library. I went on to be a third grade teacher. I am now retired but reading is a passion of mine. I really believe kids need to be identified early as to who is at risk. Provide the intense intervention. And like you said-praise and encourage. At the end of third grade my teacher gave me the Most Improved Student award. She never kept me after school.

@@marytheresejacksonlutz2533 Yes! That sounds a lot like my experience, except it wasn't until 4th grade that a teacher contacted mu mom to let her know that I was 20 assignments in the hole in ELA alone! I think a lot of things were genuinely brushed off as I was performing at such a high level in reading and writing. I was knee deep in my own research when I realized... I was actually researching a population I fit into! LOL

So what's the cause? Feminism or later pregnancies?

Recently diagnosed at 36 with ADHD, general anxiety disorder and social anxiety disorder. I was also a gifted honor student but internalized that energy into anxiety and subtle fidgets. As an adult and then a mom, the coping mechanisms stopped working. I started to see myself in a different light after my son was diagnosed, and I see signs in my daughter that her teacher didn’t pick up on. So validating to finally have answers.

Thank you for sharing this! I suspect one of my children has ADHD. My main goal is to help her love and respect the brain she was born with.

THANK YOU, Diane! SO true. I am 31 and was diagnosed this year. I had all the symptoms as a woman and struggled for at least 5 years, if not more and became so depressed, anxious and mentally fatigued. It's still a battle but now on meds & with coping skills and education, I have hope and am able to get things done without waking up and already feeling overwhelmed. I too never thought I had it even when I recently dated a guy for 4 years who had all the "typical" symptoms a guy would have from early childhood. It just presented SO differently in me yet was equally debilitating. Couldn't be happier to see this segment!

I had a diagnosis as a child but a different doctor un-diagnosed me. Most of my life I was like "yeah maybe I have it" but I didn't realize how serious it was until I stumbled on a random video on RUclips that explained some of the ways it affects your emotions, things I NEVER knew, and it shook me. And so then I dove into learning more about it (hello hyperfocus lol) and then I was like, I need to talk to a doctor, pronto.
Just having an explanation for all the things I struggle with is like a weight off of me. And helps me work with my brain instead of fighting it.
Thank you so much for covering this. There is still so much stigma and too many people who think it isn't real or just an excuse to be "lazy" or whatever and it hurts to see those comments. I am so glad this is getting more attention in recent years.

I have ADHD but had/have a hard time with conventional adulting like managing a home, maintaining social connections and employment. One thing I'm really good at is fidgeting the pocket corners thin on my jeans in a very short amount of time. 😅

Thank you for sharing your story!! I've had ADHD since I was 7(and I will be 36 in September 2024). Even with years of medication, I STILL lose things and have NO organizational skills!!

I’m 33 and have debilitating adhd but I have no means to see a doctor or find a way to help myself. If anyone has advice please help. Thank you in advance.
