- Martin Scorsese and Daniel Day-Lewis introduce "Gangs of New York," in which they bring to life the the lesser-known history of early New York City and the violent clash between immigrant classes.
Daniel Day Lewis won an Oscar for this interview
Dan
Well, he was a very convincing and plausible interviewee.
he hated the movie or what? :D
😂
Criminal that he didn’t win for Butcher
DDL plays such larger than life characters it's strange that he's so soft spoken almost shy. What a lovely man.
usually kind of introverted and reserved people are the greatest artists. look at Michael Jackson. not that I'm trying to compare him with DDL, since they are of course two very different people in many respects, but you get my point.
I think they get to vent and release a lot of what's inside them when they perform, and that's why it becomes such a great end result. my 2 cents.
@@martingarciaarvidson6684 you're spot on. I agree with you all the way. Most people have trouble seeing that.
It's all an act.
I'm looking to start stage acting. Will deffenetly study Daniel's method.
That's why most people become actors, because they are inhibited in real life. They get to express their inner lives through acting.
The fact that he's so soft spoken and gentle in real life, but his character is this film is such a super confident and flamboyant villain is really incredible.
@@billybatts9491 Wow, that was a big compliment to Eminem.
@@yosoykarito It's actually not. Looks like Daniel Day-Lewis doesn't like what Eminem does
@@billybatts9491 Thank you, I love to know stuff like that.
Thats what talent acting is,he is respected actor and incredible
@@beshomarket6980 Right
Bill the Butcher and Daniel Plainview are 2 of the most frightening characters to ever grace the screen. The tension building was phenomenal and could have only been done by Daniel.
Agreed. Both just terrifying.
Isn't this a MUCH better format than one involving a dumb audience that has to be continuously amused and 'entertained' - rather than informed ?
yes indeed
Pretty much what a podcast became.
Compared to a second Trump admin, certainly.
@@andrews527Biden supporter? 😅
@@BeatlesFan1975 No. Mr. Trump is known from Atlantic City to Albany as a con man. Eight-plus seasons of The Apprentice on NBC "rehabilitated" him for the other 48 states.
When you hear DDL's voice and compare it to Bill you ask yourself, "is this the same guy?"
Fine speaking voice, though. Pleasant baritone.
Hands down one of my favourite performances from an actor!
Then you look at the eyes..
No it’s the same just with a different accent and speaking quieter 🤨
Daniel Day is one of the most brilliant actors of his generation. He can choose any project because every project would choose him if they could.
DDL is the GOAT bro...
@@ManoleitorArg its ok bro the real ones know who the GOAT is
His brilliance rest in not choosing ‘any project’
he's fake, empty eyes
@@majooortom4254Can you expound on this?
Bill the Butcher played by Daniel Day Lewis is the most charismatic villain in cinematic history
You wrote 'freaky' wrong 😂
I also liked "There Will Be Blood"
hannibal lecture and Sho Nuff enter the chat lol.
Pesci , de Niro , Nicholson and Pacino ,Phoenix are other great vilians on cinema history ! But yes DDL is só incredible!
One of the amazing points is how many years it takes for a movie to 'finally' go intro production. 25 years for 'Gangs of NY' and around 16 years for 'Silence.'
Most of that waiting was because Scorsese kept committing to other projects. So he kept pushing Gangs and Silence back.
@@deathbyslipknot it also takes years of planning and several months of filming along with more years of editing for any movie of this calibre
I'm 53 & This is The GREATEST ACTOR of My generation!! I've never seen a Bad D.D.L. film!! I only wish he let us have just a little bit more of His Artistry!! 1 of a kind!!
DDL was robbed of the Oscar that year.
Just as much as he robbed Joaquin Phoenix's Oscar when he won for Lincoln
uh no bro
CaptainCritical wait who won? Who else was nominated
+James Nguyen I think Sean Penn won for mystic river.
To be fair Sean Penn was fantastic in that film
Daniel Day Lewis is absolutely one of, if not The, pre-eminent actor of this generation.
in my opinion of any generation
Gary Oldman maybe? From Sid Vicious, Dracula, Zorg, then to Gordon. I think they're just as good, but with a _tad_ more range.
@@Chalor. I still feel like daniel day lewis is the better actor, in that he completely loses himself in the role to the point I don't see the actor anymore, that's true for any of his roles, with gary oldman, I'm still able to see him in there in a lot of his performances, although he is one of the best actors around nowadays too
Duh.
All time
“I didn’t feel the time passing, I was very happily doing other things” I love this quote from him
I took that quote away as the favorite of the whole interview. so many people worry about what they haven't done, or "DDL should have done more movies," or "geez, I'm getting so old - the years have passed by." It's a shame really. Time is time - it doesn't discriminate.

Honestly every person who spends their days alone with their hobbies feels exactly the same way.
Other things which I absolutely will not mention... xD
he is in the present moment. very few artists can get to this point. Andre 3000 is there, chappelle as well
Hats off to the interviewer. He interviews a director and an actor, each on the their own terms, drawing out the best they have to say about their own crafts, while making a cohesive whole.
Gangs of New York is criminally underrated
It's underrated? 😅
there are eyebrows then there are Martin Scorsese eyebrows
ChrisMcloviification lmao
Then there are Brezhnev eyebrows
Its like god was too tired, he knew he was Italian and just slapped on a couple extra mustaches.
It sucks I got some caterpillars lol 😂😂😂😂 I try to wear a hat every chance I get hahah
An American mask, waiting to happen.
This the first interview I've ever watched with Daniel Day Lewis. I expected an extremely serious, somewhat introverted man. What a great pleasure to see he's actually warm with an easy laugh and smile.
A Great Director, a genius, and the best actor of all the times. Two legends.
34:00 that turn
scared me half to death tbh
DDL is a personal hero to me. I watched My Left Foot as a kid and that performance was Beyond magical. As fate would have it, I’ve ended up in a similar position to Christie Brown. I also have ASD and I see a little bit of it in DDL with the shyness, but also the absolute dedication and obsession in his regard with performance. I adore the mans art.
I loved your comment on him. So sweet. He's a hero for me too.
Clearly because of his demeanor and just the way he is in this interview, Daniel de Louis proves that listening is more powerful than talking.. And he is a sponge that can absorb and articulate In whatever character he plays ... Phenomenal actor
DDL has a brilliance about him that is purely reflected by the contributions of humility and integrity to each role he dedicates his craft to. Genuine art. The very extension of this art resonates to those who understands and appreciates this level of commitment to authenticity.
Daniel day Lewis playing Daniel day Lewis looks awesome
This comment 😂
How can that stupid comment get any likes by any intelligent human?! He’s the LEAST type cast actor on the planet! Is he acting like Bill the Butcher in this interview?! SMH
Martin is a true artist. He's one of the few directors who is trusted by the studios to run his own ship, & deliver on an Immaculate piece of art. Tarantino is given the same leeway.
Tarantino LMAO XD
I don't know how Daniel day Lewis pulls off bill the butcher AND the their will be blood guy is beyond me. He's so shy. Then he pulls those personallys out of nowhere. Amazing acting!
For someone who can play such intimidating and ferocious characters, DDL seems like the nicest, happiest, and most charming person.
Exactly! And notice they’re always British lol 😇
@@darlamae9876 Daniel is Irish
@@TotalTuxedo he s not american ??
@@TotalTuxedo He's english. He was born in kensington and grew up in greenwich
I will check his official upbringing, because only traumatized childen can become such talented actors. He retired from acting at relatively young age, wise move.
Such a good interviewer. Asks insightful questions and lets his guests speak and enjoy themselves.
DDL is simply the best character actor to ever live, no one else owns a character the way he did.
I know DDL is a method actor, but when that man commits, he really commits and it shows. Bill the Butcher is one of my all time favorite movie characters.
This is a big eye opener for me in how long of a process it can take to produce movies/time it takes for a film to actually begin production. It’s 2023 when I’m watching this now but you hear Scorsese mention he really wanted to make the movie “Silence” with Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver and it was just released in 2016. So he already has the film in his mind to produce but it doesn’t come to fruition until 15 years later and there’s no telling how long before this interview is released that he was already doing the writing for it. Even for Gangs of New York they were talking about how they already started writing the script in the 70s and it was released in 2002. Very fascinating!
that daniel expression at 34:01 is scary !
OMG where do I start with this clip ? Firstly it's two of the greatest people in the history of cinema. The interviewer, who I suspect is well known in the States but unknown in Britain, is knowledgeable and respectful. Scorcese is as always full of enthusiasm and insight ..but Day-Lewis, who is probably the greatest actor in the history of films is actually caught being almost himself. So shy, quietly spoken and self deprecating it's hard to imagine him as Butcher Bill. Since then he has gone on to portray other incredible characters that he always brings unerringly to life .. and then retired again ! A wonderful insight into a genius at work.
DDL is a prime example of the perfect actor; He doesn't make acting his entire persona, He commits everything to the parts he plays, and he has other interests, always seeming so genuine. In a time where actors are now spoiled children with serious mental issues, Seeing an interview like this is extremely refreshing
Daniel can totally be any person in a film not like most actors who act but they are always themselves. You forget it's Daniel he is so good
The setting is just magnificent.
The film is almost 3 hours,
it really grips you in the world by the end.
A cinema experience very unique.
We've seen lord of the rings,
beautiful medieval backgrounds,
we've seen dune,
a masterpiece presenting a fantasy world.
But this movie gives you this strong, unapologetic feel of violence, chaos, collapse with political conflicts and racism.
The movie doesn't shy away how brutal the time was.
black people hanged on street,
fire lighting up their corpses.
People cheering and in rage yet celebrating.
Martin somehow mix wrath with comedy.
A strong whisky with viscous aftertaste .
Beautiful words
And that chaos and fighting will come again
So in that way it's a timeless movie
Daniel Day Lewis is one of the greatest talents and committed actors we will ever experience in this era. PERIOD!.
You can tell D.L.D. lets go of his characters when filming wraps. He even struggles to talk about his motivations. They can literally be some of the most amazing performances ever, and he’s already moved on
He never lets go of him... they’re all still with him. One character roles into the next and into the next. That’s why he’s so different now than he was in the past, because he’s no longer Daniel Day Lewis, he’s Daniel Day Lewis and Bill the Butcher and Daniel Planview and Abraham Lincoln and Jack Slavin and Guido Contini ... the way he immersed himself into a role, it’s impossible to shed that. He becomes that and with each movie he makes the role takes a piece of who he really is away from him.
In my opinion DDL gave the best performance in movie history playing Bill The Butcher. I am still amazed years later and I watched it when it came out. I really believe he didn't win an Oscar because he was so great they assumed he would win many more and wanted to spread the awards around.
I think he should have won an Oscar for Last of the Mohicans too.
What about, there will be blood ... for another...
@@factisstrangerthanfiction4098 absolutely his best performance.
Yeah definitely not, but I appreciate your enthusiasm.
DDL takes it to another level in There Will Be Blood.@@factisstrangerthanfiction4098
This makes me think that he has the ability to tap into multiple personalities by having control over the multiple personalities that reside within himself and they're all willing to act as one. Scorsese who is a director and is an eye for emotion and personality understands where Louis is coming from and seems to be like a therapist or something/ physical/mental therapist
DDL is so gorgeous his smile is like sunshine
The greatest living actor in the world, and maybe of all time.
Ever heard of Brando?
DDL is an amazing actor. Long live to him in movies!
My third great grandfather was a prominent Know Nothing in the 1840s-50s, a Volunteer Fireman Foreman of Engine No.10, and a Major of the NY 71st Regiment. He was involved in the putting down of the Dead Rabbits riot of 1857. My 3rd great grandfather beat William Tweed in an election for Commissioner of Schools in 1850. He lived right in the middle of time of this movie. When my great grandfather moved to NY there were 200,000 people in Manhattan. When he died in 1882 there were 1.2 million.
Wow - bit of history right there - amazing
I think what DDL was implying was simply that he feels like an equal to Martin on a man to man level. Not just some yes man that does what he’s told. Intellectually, Daniel seems like he KNOWS he’s fantastic but also wants recognition as well. He was saying (I’m an ally, like I’m with you and will relent for you). Now you won’t get that from Alec Baldwin, or Matt Damon. They have egos that have no end. Daniel Day Lewis to me is the greatest actor to ever appear on screen.
He's very humble. Unbelievable.
When you look at DDL here and Bill The Butcher in the film, you'd swear they are not the same person. That is how good he is.
DDL’s Bill the Butcher is the finest acting performance ever put on film
Absolutely
Daniel made Leo carry his luggage in Gangs of NY

Sorry, but no one could have done Bill better and DDL. No one.
DDL should have won an Oscar for Bill the Butcher...he was brilliant
2:44 Scorsese: "I think we were always taught the civil war..."
[cut to Daniel Day-Lewis for foreshadowing]
Daniel Day-Lewis’s Bill the Butcher had the same effect as Heath Ledger’s Joker, in as much as you’re just waiting for the next scene in which he’s involved.
I love when Mr. Scorsese laughs about anything, it is so authentic, happens again with his recent Netflix film on Fran.
Excellent interview.
I think DDL in Freddy Mercury biopic could make him back to acting career.
yer rami got that role
I'd have to surmise that Mr. Day-Lewis, during his 5-year hiatus from filmmaking, was "decompressing." Like a scuba diver heading to the surface, he needed to let his body re-acclimate to normal human conditions. We've heard stories of Heath Ledger's total immersion in "The Joker" character in "The Dark Knight" contributed to his mental imbalance that led him to death. Daniel seems a person how, at times, needs his privacy and to move out of the mind-set of the last character he portrayed.
Heath Ledger died because he caught pneumonia after hanging off a bridge all night in January in London. He then foolishly took an accidental overdose of prescription medication and his respiratory system stopped working.
"I have something against", man just went back into Bill for a split second. How he didnt win an Oscar for this is one of the crimes of the the century.
He probably would've won if he was up for Best Supporting. I don't know why they submitted him for Best Lead Actor, given he wasn't actually the main character in the film.
The only one who bagged three Oscars and all for Best Actor.
there will be blood,sucked.
Rodney Elkins , anything else you will ever say will be discounted because of how stupid that comment is.
I said the movie sucked, not Lewis, besides, what are you a movie critic? You probably thought,"Vanilla Sky". was a great movie too.I walked out on both these movies, something i seldom do.
Rodney Elkins as Mike said, everything you ever say from this point regarding movies wil have no more real value.
Another movie critic. If you want to get technical,Kathrine Hepburn has four best acting Oscars.Like i said, genius, the movie sucked, not DDL.To me whatever you say, means squat.
I love this movie. A big fan of historically based films in general, but so many of them depict the same select eras, like WWII, it gets tired out. This is a unique setting for modern history films.
How on earthe do you put dicaprio's name ahead of day lewis?
He was the biggest movie star in the world after Titanic (still is). Doesn't mean he's a better actor obviously but he's a huge name
Day Lewis would literally become the highest grossing actor of all time as Scrooge!!
What I'm seeing is that Daniel has ADD and has found a genius way to coope with it
I didn’t know who Daniel was until I watched this movie. Then I feel in love with how great of an actor he was

The scariest thing about DDL, is that his characters have have various mannerism that remind so much of my dad.
The butcher and Daniel plainview are probably my two favorite and interesting characters in movies.
Damn it Charlie! DDL don’t wanna talk about those seven years off.
Thank you and thank God finally i found an interview of Mr Daniel Day Lewis
Imagine if DDL collaborated with De Niro and Scorsese on a film! Too bad he’s retired 😭
Nick Wilkie Unfortunately yes. He retired in 2017 after filming Phantom Thread.
Caitlin Joy If the movie is right, he’ll come back.
Well, he claimed the same after finishing the Boxer just to come back with this awesome performance as Billy the Butcher on Gangs of New York. He could probably go back to acting if its the right material.
I want to see DDL collaborate with Gary Oldman.
I've always said that if Ian McShane wasn't available to play Al Swearengen in HBO's 'Deadwood', Daniel Day Lewis would fit the role like a glove.
There is a charming smile and there is Daniel day Lewis's smile
This man has everything i mean everything as a tremendous attractive man
He has unique eyes made of fire 🔥🔥
I think DDL was a hired killer between 1997 and 2002... only explanation as to why he won't get into specifics.
Thank you DDL for coming back for this film! Love the movie. Just did a intercultural communications paper on this movie. My main topics were the power dynamics, culture conflicts and meso level theories. now im done with the paper and just want to learn more about the actors. :)

It just 2002, but looks like it was taped on VHS in 1980s.

DDL has the cutest smile of ever!!
Holy moly the smell of 90's and CRT tvs linger in this one
Daniel Day-Lewis just retired. he has had a great run.
DDL is a rarity among his acting contemporaries in that his work raises above the level where disbelief is forgotten, his personage fades, and there is only the story drawing me in.
Very informative interview! I love Daniel Day-Lewis.
