    Congratulations on the family flight, I would strongly recommend giving your wife the Check list and do the verbal challenge. I've had a couple of passengers now and I can tell you. Just giving them something to hold onto and to have something in their hands. Helps them to calm and by having them read the checklist. It acts like a outloud mental checklist as in, oh ok we checked all this. This has helped 99.5% of the time. The worse case scenario (just in general not referring to your wife) is if people have an anxiety or panic attack, they tend to clasp or grab what is out in front of them. This case is the Yoke, they can lock up or tense up and you wont be able to get them to let go unless you take drastic steps. So by having that checklist in their hand, they will already be holding onto that instead of the Yoke.
    Other suggestions, You have foreflight, have your passengers get the accompanying "Pessenger" app on their iPhone. They can see where they are on their phones and anything else you share. It is always reassuring to know where you are. One way to reduce those jitters and nerves in passengers.
    Great job on the flight again and Nice take off ( P.S don't forget the "line up and wait" option when the archer passed I would have perhaps used it so we spent less time on the runway and less time waiting.)

    • @RusscanFLY
      @RusscanFLY  2 года назад +8

      Thank you for the suggestions! I really like the one regarding giving the passenger something to do. That makes complete sense, and is definitely a way to ensure safety. That will be something that I will be incorporating next time I fly with somebody who is not acclimated to fly in small aircraft. Thank you for that suggestion and all the others. Peace bro!

    • @InstrumentPilotBartram
      @InstrumentPilotBartram 2 года назад +1

      @@RusscanFLY It makes me laugh every time because it never fails. The more you ask someone if they ok or to relax the more they worry. However by giving them something to do, when the person is nervous they keep the object in their hands. The person comes to a point where they like "oh I'm still holding this" and you will notice them put it down or in the pocket. That is the moment you know they've relaxed with out having to ask. It's a "Physics works" moment except it is Phycology works instead why it makes me smile with a smile w/ lil chuckle :D

    • @99thsquadron
      @99thsquadron 2 года назад +2

      Damn, in my 10 years of being licensed, I don't think I ever tried that in flight...I've only involved them on checklists in pre-flight. This is an EXCELLENT idea, giving them something to focus on in flight where they are contributing.
      I used to be a flight test engineer, and I remember 1 time I started feeling sick while collecting data in the back of a dual 300hp Baron, we were doing unusual attitudes to test an electronic replacement of the old BendixKing Attitude Indicators. The pilot in command simply had me sit up front and take the controls. I wasn't multi-rated, but he was an instructor, so it worked out...and I was able to last the rest of the flight back to Albuquerque, lol.

    Good pref light briefing. My dad just said "fasten your seat belt" and that was it. Then he took off in the Tri-Pacer. Hats off to your wife especially flying for the 2nd time at her age. You're right, kids are brave and adaptable. When you get up the nerve, take your family out to Montuak Point and walk from the runway to the beach. She'll love the whole experience. Not a bad landing for a gusty day.

    Russ! My Man! LOVED this video!!! This is EXACTLY why I'm pursuing my private pilot cert. Just getting up there with my family, expanding their horizons. My daughter is 13 and has about 5 hrs under her belt as well. She wants to be a commercial pilot but for me, at 43yrs old. I just want to get up there with my girls and explore!...Seeing your wife's face as your hit those inevitable rough patches made me really respect her being up there with you, supporting your dreams! Big, BIG props, hugs, and high fives to her and your little girl. Kudos ma'am! My wife is terrified of heights and is nervous in general. Getting certified to fly is the easy part, just scraping dimes and doing without there. My true challenge is going to be getting her up there in that seat. Lol. I'll definitely be rewatching this video with her when I get a little closer to that goal. Snowed in right now with the power out, running on a generator due to winter storms. Had to cancel my last training flight and being able to watch you and your beautiful family up there, doing what I dream of doing goes a long way to cheering me up Sir! Thank you SO much for putting yourself out there and letting us all follow you in your journey. I appreciate you Russ.

      First, thank you so much for all of the positive feedback on this video. You don't know how much it means to me to have positive reaction to a dream fulfilled. Second, this whole RUclips channel was put together precisely because of you and your daughter. I want it others to experience the joy of aviation, and the challenges that come with it. Most importantly, I wanted to show that it is possible for regular everyday people. I am so glad you found the video, and that it did exactly what I hope it would do, inspire. Lastly, just know that it took a while to get my wife comfortable with the idea of me flying, let alone her flying. My wife is afraid of heights as well, and really does not flying even commercially. So I will say that if it happened for us, it can happen for you as well. Keep me posted on your progress, and share those milestone victories with me. Be well, and thank you again for the support and the positive feedback.

      In addition to Ocean City Maryland, you can try Ocean City New Jersey. Walking distance to the shore. Cape May New Jersey and Georgetown Delaware have restaurants on the field (as does Ocean City, NJ).
      A suggestion on your checklist process is to consider trying a flow method and using the checklist to verify. I found that when I used a checklist exclusively as a “to do” list, I sometimes would miss the detail on a step. A flow method has you touching and comprehending what each item should be set at and the checklist verifies the critical items.

    • @RusscanFLY
      @RusscanFLY  2 года назад +1

      @@Marauder92V I agree wholeheartedly on the checklist issues. I couldn't find the regular checklist, and those paper checklist they had in the planes were kind of inadequate. So normally I would do a better flow, but there was a couple of times where I edited it out the multiple times that I would go back to the paper checklist just to check everything.

    Hey Russ,
    Love the video with the fam! I can tell this is what you've been waiting for - the chance to fly with your family, the excitement was all over your face. I have my 20yr old daughter watching Russ can Fly too, we can tell Ms. Caroline & Boo Boo trust you to the fullest. My daughter said when you gave that briefing she might've thought about something she had to go do right away. LOL
    So i had another lesson at Wings, the Tecnam P2008 (N902TW) i was training in is being sold - i love that plane. So Saturday i had my lesson in N462FA - that's the new Piper PA 28-181 just like the one in your video. Maybe i need to get used to it, i didn't like the low wing, the yoke- to me it was easier with the stick, manual flaps, space - it was smaller inside than the Tecnam. I did power off/on stalls and my first landing- thanks to your videos I was prepared so it wasn't that bad. Since i only want a sport pilot certificate i'm trying to get some time in the Piper i won't be able to solo in the piper but i can get some time then go solo at KLNS. Hopefully they get another Light sport at Wings, i really love flying out of there.
    Regardless i still had an amazing time just being up in the air flying just wish i could've been in the Tecnam.
    Until my next update
    Stay safe, God Bless you and your lovely family!

It's something special when you get to show the people closest to you what it looks like up there, and you are the reason why they are up there in the first place. It's an awesome thing, and something that I will definitely never forget.
      Thank you for keeping me posted on your progress, and letting me know that you're still going after it. Yeah, I heard that they were selling the techno, and they've taken all of the sessions off of the schedule. I think that's a poor decision personally, but it works for them given where that airfield is located I still think it's unfortunate that people can't fly some other aircraft other than the pipers. Don't get me wrong, they're very nice but people should have options.
      At any rate, continue to keep me posted. I can't wait for you to be able to hit the skies yourself, and have that absolute feeling of freedom! Fly safe!

    Took my girl flying for the first time one summer day. I'd been wanting to take her up for the longest because flying was such a huge part of my life and at that point, I was pretty sure she was going to be also. She likely said okay because I was pressuring her, although I did not mean to. We went up on a hot, bumpy day with haze on the horizon. She was anxious, kept her head down, and refused to look out the window! Thank goodness we only flew the pattern one time before getting back on the ground. I spent the next several days apologizing, because it was clear she did not enjoy that!
    Now jump ahead about a month and my partner was doing some touch and goes when he saw my car pull up. He stopped the plane, opened the door, and waved for us to "Come on!" I simply looked at her and asked "Want to?" She shrugged her shoulders and said okay. We went over and jumped in! I got her situated with her headset, and told her we will land immediately should she feel the desire to do so! But we got up in the air and all of a sudden she was asking questions about landmarks she thought she recognized and commenting about how beautiful it was up there! In my head I was like "Wth?" But I said nothing, enjoyed the moment, and looked forward to the future. The lesson for me? Be cool, confident, and patient, and things will likely go in your favor when you are trying to introduce folks to flying small planes!

      And thank you for committing to being an A&P! You guys are the superheroes for real. I can fly in airplane, but I can’t fix a flat tire! So as I tell all my AP brothers, thank you for your service! Get back in the cockpit!
