Multiversus Will Not Survive...Unless...

- After a long hiatus, Multiversus made its grand return this past spring. Officially launching for real this time, the game made a splash with fans of both platform fighters and the massive array of franchises under WB's reign. Yet, not even half a year later, most of that momentum has already been lost. Just like in its quote-quote "beta" period, a combination of factors has made the playerbase dwindle away to a fraction of what it started out with.
It raises a few questions. One, how is MVS squandering its momentum a second time? Two, what about the game is causing players to give up on it again? And three, is there anything the developers at Player First Games can do to save it before it becomes yet another story of a non-Smash platform fighter failing to find sustained success? What, exactly, is going wrong?

The live service bubble is bursting, so whether or not this game lives or dies is going to depend on if WB is able to handle that and allow the development team to make the game into what it needs to be to survive.
seeing as how many live service games have died relatively fast over the past few years, yeah...
The bubble is bursting because companies try to shoehorn it where it doesn't belong and because the genres are oversaturated. I don't think this is an issue for fighting games. Multiversus is really only competing against Brawlhalla in its niche, and it should be a easy clap for MV considering the IP and budget, but Brawlhalla stands strong.
@@onlymyself1234 It *should* be an easy clap for MV, but WB is running it into the same pitfalls that're causing live services to fail in saturated genres. It's the same issue of not understanding or deliberately ignoring the tendencies and preferences of the players to see how much they can get away with, only to find out they passed a point where the players will not return.
In other words Warner bros is taking the "player first" out of "Player first Games"
@@KevSB07I'd hardly call that a live service issue, but yeah, i know MV is being mishandled. If it fails, it won't be because it's a live service, Brawlhalla is one after all, it will be because WB is the most clueless, executive-poisoned company ever
So what? MVS and any other plat fighter will die if it stays live service? Go tell that to Brawlhalla's players lmao. That game is still huge.
I like Multiversus and I am comfortable with it's current state, but I agree that it needs some improvements to become a long lasting game, this will all depend on Warner Bros being willing to give Player's First Games the resources to maximize their improvements on the game, mechanically I barely have a problem with the game as ny only gripes is after you do all your daily and weekly missions it becomes hard to get motivated to play, adding offline modes other than rifts could be a very welcome addition.
The presentation of the game could be improved greatly, I know it's mostly a budget reason but I would love for more animations like the one from Jason's or Agent Smith's rift to be implemented in other rifts, so the mode feels less cheap. UI could be more stylized to fit the chaotic nature of the crossovers, or we could customize it ourselves with cosmetics after a price drop in the game's monetization. We need to lower the gleamium cost because inflation is a bitch and the cheapest rarity skin shouldn't cost 500 gleamium, make it 150 or 200 so I will be more willing to buy them for a event. I know these prices were probably put on by Warner Brothers executives but I don't want to spend 2000 on just one skin no matter how cool it looks
I mostly agree everything you just said here. I would've totally bought Black Lantern skins if they were bundled
That message at the end just crushed my soul, man, legit "Can we get a new platform fighter that isn't deeply flawed?" I really hope Rivals 2 pulls it's weight and does great...
The fact that I had to constantly introduce people to Rivals because it's not a crossover franchise and in honestly people only play Rivals of Aether for the Workshop, it's the honest truth and Rivals 2 not having workshop would fall this niche hyper competitive platform fighter that's less popular with casuals due to the rather unknown cast.
it won't
Also on console
I’ve played rivals beta and think it feels great. It’s like if melee had ultimate had a love child.
Granted I’m bias but I feels fun
Rivals will be a good game but casuals literally play fighting games for the roster having “iconic” characters and that’s it
If nothing else, the voice acting here makes me wish that Nintendo would actually unionize Smash’s English voice production. That said, I *REALLY* hope MVS gets it together. At least soon enough to where we get Static.
for me im still waiting for marceline
Nintendo cannot do that while also dealing with VAs for 3rd party fighters. Unless the companies are willing to give Nintendo full control of their characters' voices (never happening), union is impossible.
@lucaantinori4834 If anything, the lack of unionization is why Nintendo can’t get every original actor back. This is especially true for the Square Enix characters, Sora, & Sonic.
I 100% think the voice acting IS the reason it feels silent elsewhere, because all the "ugh" and "hyaaas" would make it harder to listen when characters are talking. Which is why MK only have banter before the fight.... but yeah, smash not having even on stuff like cg cutscenes is criminal. They didn't even had TEXT cutscenes like SNK vs Capcom Chaos
@@PlatyNewsI think the reason why text based cutscenes are impossible in Smash is because, those "ughs" and "hyaaas" are...pretty much the whole vocabulary of some characters, while other characters are straight up silent.
And the CG cutscenes...Sakurai said before that making them for a cast as big as Ultimate's...calling it undertaking is an understatement, and one that's not even worth it if some would rather see the cutscenes without playing the game.
As someone who got the Matrix Smith skin (Which required an extra 10 boss defeats more then Smith)... Never again do I want to go through that pain.
Same. It was nice teaming up with friendly people on Discord, but I’m glad the devs haven’t pulled that stunt again so far.
Dpnt worry, i doubt they'll do something like that again
Hell, they didnt do it for Beetlejuice, and i doubt they'll do it for Nubia
@frank8917 Originally this was how you were also supposed to unlock Beetlejuice, but all the rightfully garnered backlash against how Agent Smith was unlocked made them back away from this approach.
That was total hell, but I did do it and 4 other people I know unlocked Agent Smith as well. I will never ever do that event again. I am grateful the grinding has been toned down drastically it isn't perfect, but it's not the disaster that Season 1 was.
Multiversus did have an arcade mode in the beta, it was removed for some reason
Where is Daffy? Where is Ben 10? Hey Scooby Where are You?
That's part of the problem. A roster that is overly safe. It makes Smash with all its Fire Emblem look rosbust
@@shadowednight1600 it baffles me how I cannot play my batman and robin fantasy in a 2v2 game
I agree. I love DC comics, but they have enough representation. We don't need more, especially not a no name like Nubia. Green Lantern or Lex, I'd have been hyped to see, but not some random for brand synergy.
@@masedaace5473 The fact they're ignoring so much is why this tanked. No Daffy and already season 3? What are they smoking?
@@shadowednight1600 Hard disagree on that. Its got Looney Tunes, Cartoon Network, DC, Live action shows and movies, Adult swim. Its got ALOT of variety. They have a HUGE pool of characters to draw from so I think the roster's really balanced all things considered. It not having Daffy or Ben is excusable since we have characters that represent the same corner imo, and every character is filling their own niche in the roster
I waited so bad for the game to launch again, but none of my friends liked the state of the game after the relaunch
Its worse then the beta.. simple🤕
The craziest addition to Multiversus I would love to see is Scorpion from Mortal Kombat
Since Warner Bros does own Mortal Kombat
Yea, I’m surprised that hasn’t happened earlier
And if we are using steam charts as info, most of the time MK1 have less players than multiversus, so one could arguee that MK needs Multiversus marketing more than Multiversus needs MK xD
@@RyGoesPOP That would make so much sense, and quotes could be made in reference to the game's toast system since the announcer does say "Toasty!"
@@DavidTokugi44 It's kinda bizarre tbh.
Its especially strange considering there were WB logo animations crossing over him with Shaggy & Scooby as a teaser before beta launched.
It's funny that this video goes live just shortly after Season 3 launches, which gave us some significant gameplay rehauls that have (from what I've seen) garnered a lot of positive reception from the player base. PFG is definitely getting better about maintaining and appeasing its current player base
The big problem imo, and I know Uncle Al has touched on this a few times, is that the devs need to work harder on how they can reel in newcomers to the game. They really need to make the pricing and currency distributions a lot less rigid. Granted I imagine a lot of that is outside of PFG's control and is just another instance of Warner Bros being an increasingly scummy company, but I digress.
I also feel like they should focus on giving us more single player content to give us more to do than just online matches and Rifts. That was the one thing that sunk Nick All Star Brawl, and its sequel worked hard to correct that mistake. And judging from their last dev stream, apparently they are looking into this as well.
Yesss I totally agree! The gameplay stuff, they have definitely slowly but surely been working on, but they should be giving better single player content
Honestly I would like to see more content in multiverse as lack of content is what killed the beta version
I would like to see more game modes such as capture the flag, strike out, boss rush, break the targets or even the return of arcade mode
Haven't played since relaunch, have things gotten better?
@@xkmuffinzx3915 yes and no
Still can’t believe they’re putting in Nubia over literally anyone else interesting if they’re saving the most wanted characters for battle passes the game is cooked the the devs stupidity and greed from Warner brothers is killing this game
Hop off Nubia she's a sick addition, if Smash can get away with niche additions before Diddy Kong or Wario then surely Wonder Woman's sister can get a chance to shine.
@Killuk_x Those original chars are scrapped at this point.
@Killuk_xI agree with your point but I hope Nubia doesn't feel too similar to wonder woman, also I hope they add Shazam at some point because I still feel like it was pretty stupid to add black Adam without at least adding Shazam in as well
Nubia is expressly a clone/semiclone that was only added because she was easy to add. I understand having frustrations with the game's priorities, but getting mad ar Nubia is pointless- it isn't Nubia or Scooby, it's Nubia or no "original" character
I enjoy MVS fine, though not gonna argue the lack of polish from being rushed and the awful monetization hold this game back. (All WB's fault to be clear)
Certain Creative choice Complains like character movesets and mechanical feel are too subjective in the grand scheme of things.
I honestly really appreciate the game's willingness to branch away from Melee and tone back the pacing, it's a breath of fresh air from the direction many other plat fighters follow. (Not a knock towards those type of games)
However, yes the game's insane grind requirements did push me and others away. A huge shame.
Completely agree with your fix suggestions.
Whoever came up with that Agent Smith event in Season 1 is not getting their Christmas bonus
I really liked the agent smith event and it was really fun and had a blast with my partner grinding for it. I want another event like that and i'm sad that they don't do anymore events like that one.
@@SketchSpooks What's wrong with it?
@@SegaMario They said "Unlock Smith by beating every Rift on every difficulty" and then literally blocked off multiple difficulties so people couldn't do that.
@@MegaZeo Yeah, that's dumb.
its really sad to see how the game has fallen especially as someone who got to play all the betas. I havent played the game since the first week of the relaunch it was extremely disappointing.
this video failed to mention the improvements to rifts, which are now more streamlined and easier to progress, and events, which allow buying a wide selection of fighters without needing to grind fighter currency (and if you don't like what's on offer, you can get gleamium or fighter currency). other than that, pretty good video, if not repeating most of the talking points everyone uses when criticizing the game
solutions to problems they created... why does that sound so familiar... oh yeah it's standard practice to make people feel that shit marketing isn't all that bad...
@Ashgan9 I guess people are not allowed to learn and improve from their mistakes then
@@libra_v3 That right there is the problem tho, the game is held back at every step by marketing.... anyone with half a braincell can see the game devs have the passion and love for the game but whoever is doing the marketing is the dumbest shit alive...
No lie, I would like to see other games/franchises in a "What Went Wrong" video. Games such as PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale (On why there isn't a sequel and the behind the scenes problems it has), while at the same time, Nickelodeon All-Stars Brawl 2 (Seeing how that series jump back after the first fall, and finding problems it still have for a future third title to fix).
They really just shouldn't make a 3rd NASB
Honestly, you hit the nail on the head with alot of problems with this game. The grind being a big one for me, making if feel like a glorified drag to get through.
Am I crazy or does this video seem a LOT like his first one? Like down to the anecdote about Arya
Rent due
Not surprised. If a problem he has with the game isn't addressed, it would have to be brought up again.
@@LucarioShirona but I’m pretty sure he deleted the last video and put segments into this video lmao
I still hate that characters arent free
When MultiVersus came back, I rewatched your first video on its flaws to see which ones they addressed. I'm disappointed to say that since then they've addressed almost none. And just to add insult to injury, so far nobody on my wishlist has been added. I really want this game to course correct, so I think we should show this video to Tony and PFG.
They’ve addressed a lot what are you talking about
You’re really gonna act like no-one on your wishlist being added means the game is bad?
@@Right_Bumper The game is still using all the most corporate and exploitative live service tricks in the book, barely any new content has been added besides Rift Mode and there are many defective hitboxes.

They absolutely did design this game to be like a mobile game
I’ve kind of fallen off of it since season one where I was playing daily. I like it and have spent money on it, but my friends don’t play it often so I have to be alone with it usually
Please, i wanna see Gumball in Multiversus. Or Ami and Yumi as their Pyra and Mythra.
Who are ami and Yumi?
@@lucasallen5792 Ami and Yumi are Japanese pop stars who had a show on Cartoon Network back in the day called Hi Hi Puffy Ami-Yumi. They did the theme song for the classic animated Teen Titans series
18:57
I did.
Even got the Matrix Agent Smith skin for going all 30 Rift Bosses.
The former was... tolerable, while the latter wasn't worth it.
They are working on allowing us to play rift mode mini games freely in online versus. That'll help.
Theyres also a leaked perk that is going to be a Combo Breaker
ALSO, there are a couple of rifts that you can use to get the dailies/weeklies missions completed. The surfs up rift has you play as Garnet (just need a costume/character that has sports uniform to beat the level before it), Jason's rift has you play as Finn in the first level, you can play as Jake or Taz in the megalodog rift's first level, and the last rift in season one lets you fight as either Rick or Morty! Actually, you can pretty much do all the dailies/weeklies that ask for specific fighters with the first season's last rift now that I think about it
Oh yeah, Multiversus happened, sadly the only guy I see who cares about it is PapaGenos, I lowkey feel bad for the d00d. I know he wants nothing more than for games like Multiversus or NASB/NASB2 to succeed. He is probably one of the guys who gives the most benefits of the doubts with them.
The Relaunch didn’t help either, it really goes to show how first impressions can go a long way, the fact that they had to pull it last year only to stuff in a bunch of micro transactions really didn’t help either and honestly the Beta was better than the Relaunch.
But yeah, hopefully WB can stop being WB for once.
I played Multiversus daily during Season 1, I’ve been playing intermittently since then, and my gems STILL aren’t high enough level to have gotten Agent Smith early. I can’t imagine how much grinding the people who did earn him had to do…
I played for 1 hour daily and it was easy
05:20 ok yeah, nah, as someone who spend the last six months leading up to the release of the Full Launch uploading all the voicelines and ***grunts*** for the characters on the Wiki I can safely say this was either a glitch or you just didn't hear them for some reason or another cus these guys have grunts for jumping, landing on ground, nomal attacks, medium attacks, strong attacks, getting hurt, getting rung out, etc. Some even have bonus grunts for animations like Rick's burpings.
Season 2 had a bug where a lot of voicelines got disabled. That must be what he's talking about.
Its just the gameplay, it was a fast paced fun 2v2 fighter, now its a slow whiff punish based 1v1`fighter. but for that the movesets are way to simple, which doestn matter in a chaotic fast paced 2v2. Like if they just add the movement and platforming and pace of the (beta) platformfighter back the game can recover.
I truly do wish for this game to succeed. However I completely agree with what you discussed in the video. Here’s to hoping they get the game in check
Add Daffy Duck, more looney tunes, Quick Draw McGraw, Hong Kong Phooney, more HB characters, Pee Wee Herman, Dexter, Neo, Trinity, more Bat villains, and for the love of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, NO CAPTAIN FREAKING PLANET!
bro I'm crying who tf wants to play as Quick Draw McGraw 😭😭😭
I've been playing Multiversus since the beta. Platform fighters are also my favorite game genre.
I definitely agree with everything you said, especially the buying all characters option like in Brawlhalla. I've been asking for that for a long time. I want this game to be successful and love crossovers. There's so much potential to this that's being drowned out by the negatives
3:27 Guess I'm not the only one who thinks Nintendo will keep making Smash Bros with or without Sakurai.
Then again, this is Nintendo we're talking about, things that make good business sense don't always come from them. Nintendo often defies conventional logic and reason and can be difficult to predict at times, which can be either good or bad depending on the situation. Things like the industry-leading hardware of Nintendo Switch (Steam Deck copied the concept and PSPortal tried to) and Wii Remote (PS Move and Kinect tried to copy the concept) came of that but so did the dropoff in third party support between N64 and Wii U. Also the Wii U happened because of it.
*sigh*
Another one of these, huh?
Rent is due, got to make another Multiversus is bad video
Jup. And probably by a person that has less than 100 hours combined in all 3 seasons

No matter how many hours you play, hovering above ground sliding left/right while your aerial animation completes will always feel unnatural
@@joshuadavis8265 Who cares, not everything has to be like Smash. Lots of games do "unnatural looking" stuff like that for gameplay convenience.
Honestly with this game being a f2p game it's expected that you'd have to spend some money but with that being said. They're constantly putting out events that help you get free skins and fighter currency. In season 2 I was able to unlock 5 new characters for free .
For the battle pass , if you buy it once , they give you enough gleamium to where you can buy the next battle pass .
Other f2p games are worse when it comes to this kinda stuff
6:49 Gordy Haab has two movie credits, the rest are video game soundtracks while Stephen Barton is credited for nine movies, six TV shows, ten video games (including the upcoming Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra) as well as eighteen additional music and sound credits for movies.
Can you make a video making your own Multiversus roster? That would be interesting.
fun video, nicely stated. i'm someone that stopped playing shortly after lebron came out (my PC having more or less fried at the time; i think MVS was partially to blame for it - i digress). having watched the game grow and return a couple times and seem to slowly, slowly fall apart from my few friends that cared for it between the lack of game modes, _...unfortunate_ balancing angles, monetization... i felt kind of justified in stopping when i did, albeit not by choice.
my most severe issue with the modern cut of the game is just how _slow_ everything feels. slower and floatier than the game already felt, with every model being so much larger, every attack feeling disproportionately animated with its strength level... so on and so on. i understand the appeal of a slower, floatier game when it was much more focused on the 2v2 angle, and not every game needs to be _as_ quick and snappy as rivals of aether, or the smash series... but everything about it felt very wrong from a gameplay feel. the poor monetization decisions, deeply lacking side content outside of main matches, even the movesets were things i generally could overlook when the game was in alpha and beta-ish. but the game is meant to be in a playable, "finished" state... and every time i look into it it feels like they uploaded a build they stopped using months ago. there's not enough bullets in any convenient gun to shoot yourself in the foot as many times as MVS does; it's my firm opinion they've taken an SMG to it instead.
I guess you and me are playing different games then, because it still feels incredibly fast especially when you start getting matches vs good players and you both enter a dodge loop battle to see who has better reads to get the hit first. And don't even get me started on how fast character can clear the platform to reach the other side.
Eg. me trying to setup some cork/tennis ball setup with tom while the enemy is recovering. They land on the platform, jump + dash cancel and they are on top of me right before I hit my first ball of the setup
We get it, Delzethin, you hate movesets full of references.
I can get why it might be annoying, but I like the silliness of it.
It's so nitpicky lmao. Silly characters doing silly things where it fits? Oh the horror! As if Joker wouldn't do a three piece of a fish, fake gun and crowbar to troll someone lmao.
That was easily the worst take in this video
The references are what makes these movesets fun and actually feel like they’re taken from their source material
If all Joker did was punch, kick and maybe throw out one gun he wouldn’t feel like the Joker
@@Right_Bumper he’s not saying no references he’s saying use them sparingly
@@flamerangerg5823 Ye talk to Sonic in Smash about using them sparingly and see how that goes
It's a case-by-case basis on what's fitting and tasteful for the character, IMO MVS did it pretty well.
Haven't watched, and I know I'll get flack, but for as many baffling decisions that pfg have made with roster construction, relaunch, events, I've never seen a dev team work as hard as they are to put it back together and find success. I know warner brothers looms as a force of corporate greed, but dedicated dev teams will always beat that out in the long run. As for content and newcomers, shit like "mvs dead?" Will ALWAYS get more clicks than gameplay or hype and it's sad to see that, despite valid criticism, it's taken to such an extreme length that no one feels they should justify spending time on this game. Idk if that's just for this game or for others in the fgc entirely, but I wish it would stop bc I love this game and hope for it to continue and thrive
I've always felt that the game was incomplete... likely due to meddling from the execs who own the game not giving the developers the room to let the game be what it should be.
I was a Beta player, but the game didn't exactly keep me. Come relaunch, I was hoping things changed for the better and was greeted with confusion and heavy monetization. After a few rounds with the beta-unlocked Garnet, I dropped the game HARD because I wasn't convinced the game was willing to respect my time as much as it wanted my money.
And I would be willing to give them money if they let me... actually play the game. It feels like it was made for mobile but the folks at Player First wanted it on console. And the fact that it feels like a confused mess of MOBA, gacha, and platform fighter didn't help matters. It was a hard pass, and I want to know the game actually functions like a full plat-fighter before I try it once more.
If NASB2 can come out of the original's ashes and rise like a slime-coated phoenix, MvS can too. But that requires the devs AND the execs to actually be able to look at what went wrong and fix it. The devs probably want to. The execs just want their money.
Counter point just playing the game gave you enough currency to get at least 4 chars in season one and again in season 2 along with the events which gave you an option to buy up to 2 more per event. I started with about 3rd of the cast since I played in Beta and am now missing only BJ and IG with enough currency to buy at least one of them. It seems like people never played Free 2 Play games Eg. LoL and simply don't understand that to play the game and unlock all the characters all you need to do is put in one hour a day.
And the argument that a fighting game is not respecting your time is just insane. I have been in the FGC for over 7 years now and boy I can tell you that nobody hops from one char to another on the fly like that.
Only you see it as a MOBA. It has no foundation to even be called a moba, gacha is also misplaced since you don't really "roll" for anything. This coming from a person that actually spent 10 years playing different gacha games as a F2P player.
I will not defend MVS as being a perfect game as there are things that I find missing like more character voice interactions like there was in the Beta. But after playing the game a fair bit reaching plat in S2 I can honestly say the game is in the best state it has been especially since the new S3 patch that gave us new momentum dodge cancels which make the game faster but still more readable than Beta
I feel like this game only rewards players if they pick the devs best buffed character.characters not hi on the tier list get even more screwed but characters that are most popular get crazy reworks and buffs
For everyone saying the game is in a good state right now. You’re why the game is dying. At this point the more they try to “improve” combat mechanics the more characters become unusable. All you see online is meta characters now. It’s boring new people playing against the same half of the cast of characters because no one wants to play the other half because they are at severe disadvantages to the more developed half. It just getting closer and closer to looking like the game just needing a complete overhaul again. Also js match connection is still a big issue. Definitely not as bad as it used to be but still a very active issue.
A majority of the roster wasn't designed around this new "molassesversus" slow gameplay, and it _really_ shows. The new fighters (Juice, Jason, Jack, etc) all feel noticeably different, and _better_ than every single beta fighter. Well, save for the assassins who are still relatively quick.
Multiversus should've been a MOBA
I hope they fix Jason's weapons counting as his hurt box when he does literally any attack because as a Jason main it is very annoying
According to youtubers, this game dies every week
I was literally watching the previous What Went Wrong MVS video when this dropped.
Feels like fate :p
Imo the biggest problem with this game is it tried to make itself the ONLY game you play (if you have a job/go to school)
A complete lack of respect for their players at every level. They try to respect the players by implementing changes a vocal minority shouts for and ruin their game at every turn. I desperately wanted it to be fun but I just can't do it.
It would be fine if the time commitment wasn't so much that you couldn't play other games you enjoy and still keep up with your progression. Not to mention the monetization just feeling so predatory.
It's crazy how plat fighter players all wanted to give them money, then they greedily tried to capitalize on that and just fucked up all the things we actually want to have in a plat fighter dramatically.
Trying to grind the early agent smith event in s1 completely burnt out any hope and fun I had with the game. Was fun to dump some time into it when it came back but I could almost immediately see the cracks and felt it had no staying power.
I did the smith grind just by playing 1 hour daily
Wait this thing was alive? Last i heard of it it had goku shegy memes 3 or so years ago...
Even frigging nick brawl got more marketing lmao
And both NASB games are doing worse than this game
Great vid. The lack of arcade/story mode had been killing me. I've had to start getting other characters to gold in ranked to keep having fun

I'm sure you appreciate all 31K subscribers you have but your content deserves like 10x that at the minimum. Thank you for continuing to make videos
The fact you won't criticize the slow movement tells me you don't understand the problem.
The game feels like it's underwater, it's garbage.
Another reason I can't get into this game; why bother? It's a WB game. It could disappear forever with little warning for no reason even if it were successful.
Unlikely, even if that happens, might as enjoy now then right?
Multiverses won’t survive unless it because a regular video game that you can just buy and get most of the content, and also has more singleplayer/local multiplayer focus. That’s what I think, anyway. Definitely won’t happen though, that’s for sure.
I think that this game handles using references as attacks mostly good, like yeah Joker's 3 jab attacks are disconnected references to each other, but it is all things that I expect the joker to do pretty naturally, and it especially helps the iron giant as to make him less like he's actively violent and more like he's just causing collateral damage on accident, like Villager in smash, but I agree there are still some weird ones in there, like the Velma glasses attack you mentioned or most of Gizmo's kit which somehow help his character like iron giant but also not really because how does any of his kit do anything it does, especially with the popcorn ball
The #1 flaw that MVS can never fix: none of these characters belong together.
With Smash Bros., even with guests its still centered on Nintendo's brand & legacy not to mention the upper limit still is video games having appeared on Nintendo. MVS on the other hand, feels like WB took everything they own (not built) & smeared it all over the place. You can smell the sterility of marketing all over it.
Why can't it be just Looney Tunes? Or DC? Hell why not resurrect Punch-Time Explosion & make it not cheap? I've been so over all these 'wacky' crossovers: its only so funny for the 100th time to see Arya fight Bugs Bunny or make Shaggy's entire playstyle a forced DBZ meme.
What? This game is still centred on WB’s legacy. If it was just Looney Tunes or DC it wouldn’t be interesting
We really need to stop glazing Smash like it’s god’s perfect platform fighter
@@Right_Bumper If this was really about legacy instead of corporate consolidation, then where's my black-and-white Lana Turner fighter? If Disney made a platform fighter featuring Stewie Griffin & Rey Skywalker, would you call that legacy too?
Smash Bros. has always been as a package the tightest playing, infinitely replayable platform fighter compared to its copycats (maybe with the sole exception for Rivals of Aether - the closest to come against it). Until its dethroned by something respectable of my time & taste, I'm going to reserve my judgment.
@@Mind_Crimes I feel like Smash fans are the reasons videos like this are made
They want everything to be exactly the way Smash does things and not let these games be their own thing instead of comparing everything 24/7, people just expect these games to "dethrone" smash when that's not the reason this game exists
Again, if this game just had 1 property it wouldn't sell as well, like imagine if Smash was all Mario characters. You want a full DC fighting game? Play Injustice. Cuz this game's whole thing is being a multiverse crossover (hence the name) what else were you expecting?
@@Right_Bumper Yet not a single contemperary platform fighter has yet to match Smash for its movement & responsiveness that keeps it relevant, resulting in jank fests. Which is why the player bases don't eclipse Smash or last long at all. I would commend them doing something different from Smash. Just gotta know the rules before you can break them.
You underestimate the brand value of the properties featured in MVS. Mario Kart still carries itself even with
8's guests. Guests & crossovers can be great when they're done in moderation & with appeal: it took Injustice 1 a
whole DLC cycle until Scorpion.
Instead of building up any single IP, its apparent WB was gunning for the Smash approach by going 'look at all the things we own!' thinking the tired cliche of mashing together a bunch of nostalgia bait characters with flavor-of-the-month sensations like Rick & Morty or GoT has any appeal anymore outside of the most vapid, Funko Pop-teeming geek-chique dens.
@@Mind_Crimes Stop comparing it to Smash, it shouldn’t copy everything Smash does cuz what’s the point of being unique if everything has to copy Smash with everything it does? This is why I can’t stand Smash fans. You want every new platform fighter to play exactly like Smash does
You ever heard of standing out and being your own thing?
I left the game because it is so DAMN grind heavy and i hate no time for it nor im willing to make some
You complain about references a lot considering it's a reference game. What else is Velmas downair supposed to be?
Velma isn't a canonical fighter either. Zero fighting moments her entire character is being a passive nerdy detective. Her losing her glasses on her down air makes more sense than any other suggestion.
@@nuibaba280 He probably didn't think of that
"EW REFERENCE! CRINGE!" without the general understanding that Velma isn't a fighter
I will say people focus way too much on the balance IMO, which is a small part of the game. Any fighting game that allows creative, expressive combos (not even factoring it's unique mechanical structure) is gonna risk many OP combos. That's not even factor the nature of a Meta Developing and such.
Though going as far as to temp remove a character from the game is not the way to do it.
I dropped it the moment it limited me to like 4 characters. I don’t have time to grind a fucking party game. SSBU for me.
My biggest personal issue with this game is the barrier of entry for new players compared to myself.
I’ve been playing since the beta’s launch and have spent a bit on Gleamium here and there, but having access to the whole roster and the right skins for missions just because of my “commitment” makes me feel…dirty.
This was highlighted last night when a new set of missions were added alongside the weekly’s. Missions that give you currency for the Prestige shop. You know, Prestige? The currency you get from getting cosmetics? Yeah. You’re either getting these by playing as the PPG (Battle Pass) or fitting the criteria for SEVERAL DIFFERENT SKIN LABELS! I may have had the majority, but that’s my point! I still know the trick here! Buy the skins, get prestige, do the missions, get more prestige!
It’s a cycle! It’s a vicious cycle where I’m allowed to skip step 1 and it makes me feel like a spoiled bitch playing this game!
im mainly a casual player, but tbh i've never been a fan of having friendly fire being a thing in team matches within a platform fighter, there's just something about it personally that just doesn't sit right with me
also yeah the monetization in this game is just...disgusting, it can take forever to get the stuff you actually want, which encourages microtransactions in my eyes, plus the lack of stuff for casual players really hurts. And then there's the grinding...nobody likes to grind, so the amount of grinding you'd have to do in this game is just horrible
I'm surprised you didn't mention the game not having a Nintendo Switch version. Though given what you just went over, maybe that's a good thing.
I heard that PS4 and Xbox one have issues with Multiversus. For the best they wait for a Switch 2 port
This game should not be on Switch
I’m not playing this game on Nintendo’s servers
Multiversus is getting so much unnecessary hate…
I grinded daily during season 1 for a time but at a certain point I realized I was grinding a game that I was the only one in my friend group who was playing it. Taking that year off and coming back looking nearly identical to how it did previously with worse monetization and less casual incentive probably kneecapped it right out the gate. I think they also should have strove to make the local, casual experience more appealing. As is right now, it makes no attempt to not appear as a hardcore focused online free-to-play title. Making local play more prominent in menus and not a tucked away after thought with barely any UI or UX considerations would go a long way. And I know certain people would hate them even being there, even if no online modes used them, but this game could use items. Give mixups for when you just want to have fun playing and not worry about ranks and matchups.
Nearly 5 weeks after this video published. Shields are being added. Every weekend we can play mini games and modifiers in online matches. Marceline from Adventure Time coming next.
I really want to like it, but the balancing is so lopsided and wonky. I'll lose and feel like there was nothing I could do. Certain characters will tap you once and then drag you to the blast zone while they have your controller unplugged. It just makes me not want to play, even though conceptually, the game has so much going for it.
I often forget just how bad the monetization currently is as someone who's had almost the entire roster unlocked from playing the beta and paid for the top level founder's pack. I haven't had to worry about affording the battle pass or new characters as I literally have several seasons worth of battle pass tickets and character tickets left over, and I got plenty of prestige currency rewarded and perk currency refunded from the currency exchange to get back to where I was during beta. The only aspect of the monetization I had noticed was how little chance you have to earn gleamium in game paired with how expensive even just basic cosmetics like Jason mask or shark hat variants are. I forget how many other avenues of paywalling the game actually has and it makes me sad to see a game I actually enjoy (in spite of the many frustrations that come with playing) feel so inaccessible to many people
I also agree with the voice acting weirdness. Fern, for example has like 8 voice lines and doesn't conversate with ANYONE in a way that feels natural. Then need to reallocate their budget into vo work rather than cutscenes.
Me and an uncle grew up playing fighting games together. We liked the duos but don’t feel like it’s worth committing to multiversus, even when we do play It’s pretty fun. We just don’t see the game lasting long. First impressions matter, so they scared a lot of people with their failed relaunch: then the fact characters are so much harder to earn does no favors either. I supported that beta, so I didn’t realize how bad that was till my uncle was talking about it when we were trying out teams. The character grind in my opinion is the biggest issue this game has. Allow a players to one time purchase all characters and future characters or just allow all characters available to everyone.
AND THEY NEED TO HURRY UP AND DROP BATTLE PASS LOCKED CHARACTERS.
I like the game, but the corporate decisions are killing it unfortunately.
My newcomer predictions:
DC Comics - Robin, Alfred, Cyborg, The Flash, Lex Luthor, Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Aquaman, The Penguin, The Riddler, Mr. Freeze, Killer Croc, Deathstroke, Plastic Man, Two Face, Steppenwolf, Darkseid
Adventure Time - Princess Bubblegum, Ice King
Looney Tunes - Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Road Runner, Coyote
Rick and Morty - Mr. Meekseeks, Summer Smith
Scooby-Doo - Scooby-Doo, Fred Jones, Daphne Blake
Steven Universe - Ruby and Sapphire, Amethyst, Pearl
Others - Gumball, Darwin, Mordecai, Rigby, Benson, Ben 10, Clarence, Dexter, Uncle Grandpa, Craig Williams, Harry Potter, Dumbledore
Man you pointed out almost every issue that I've had with this game and I'm from beta through second launch, playing Marvin the Martian in ranked is basically useless with the balancing in MMR let alone other characters on the cast. I got love for this game. But they got to do better to keep my attention. I'll happily go play other games and not be stressed out about glitchy hitboxes and inconsistent attacks 🤷🏿♂️
14:40 "It STILL doesn't have an arcade ladder!" AND IT USED TO!
As someone who played today the Ranked issues are kinda fixed but also just as bad. I’m Platinum 5 on Iron Giant at this moment and today I played 5 matches with Masters Players and 3 different Grand Masters players…as Platinum 5…You don’t lose as much thankfully but it’s insanely disheartening to be constantly thrown into matches that I’m very unlikely to win because the game couldn’t match me properly.
I also agree with the Monetization of Multiversus is scuffed. I feel this game should’ve made all uncommon cosmetics earnable to give players a feeling of growth and maybe encourage players to buy stuff similar to how Overwatch did back in the day. Events sometimes are generous but they tend to be very wishy washy on if all the stuff in the event can be redeemed with that event currency. For the cybucks event only FIVE items could be bought with the cybucks while the rest is Gleamium only.
I’m tired of normals just phasing through players, no whiff recovery, horrendous hitboxes. I can’t play this garbage shit anymore
we need power up (fun wacky and interesting ones) and most importantly a special move
This video was uploaded longee than i played the game😂
Just deleted it this morning after playing for a couple days..
Game sucks. Period.
“Potential” means nothing if u don’t actually LET it grow.
I get it I really do, my frustrations with how barebones and monetarily aggressive this game is, coupled with the ludicrous amount of balancing and issues have still not been lifted and it has indeed stifled my enjoyment that I haven't even picked it up again since season 2 started. But man, you have no idea how much it sucks to see yet another video on this topic, and list almost the exact same problems which past videos brought up even BEFORE season 2 dropped.
I also want to point out that the heavy spam and visual noise this game indirectly does helps me understand more why Smash has features as simple as shields, or grabs, and even small movement options like walking or getups. No wonder Rivals 2 opted for a more smash like control scheme because if it did keep it's original layout in the first game (which does happen to very similar to Multiversus), then I'd imagine it would feel just as bad as it does here.
wrong. i like every one being a refrence
As someone who bought the Deluxe founders pack that gave me tickets and glemium during the open beta, which means I had more than enough character tickets to unlock every character and have plenty left over, I've had a similar yet different take. Because I bought the founders pack I've never had to buy any character which means I just got a few cosmetics for the characters I play but after that I've basically have no reason to spend any money on this game at all I don't need to spend money on characters I still have plenty of character tickets. So even for people willing to toss in a few bucks, there is nothing for me to do.
Tbh they needa do a season of just a big event, no new characters, and focus of fixes only
Thank you for bringing attention to the issues this games having rn. I have faith the devs will make this game the best it can be. Keep up the great work!
Why do you people complain about references so much when Smash literally built Mega Man as a "so retro" reference at the expense of his canon personality and character. Or how Steve and Min Min are more focused on trying to take stuff from their games, creating a clunky and unfun transition into Smash. Extremely hypocritical. Who cares if Lebron and Velma have moves like those. They aren't canonical fighters! Their movesets aren't off base than stuff like Phoenix Wright who has moves of basic mundane activities (scattering papers, sneezing, etc). One of Velma's gimmicks and traits is her glasses ofc she'd have a move about it.
It's how you telegraph the attack moves. The thing is for Megaman, lot of his attack references are already attack moves he makes in the games he's from. His entire arsenal are all Robot Master copy moves he claims and are telegraphed based on the original attacks they are based on as they're already are attacks.
Velma having to apparently "loose her glasses" as an down aerial attack makes no sense for her character.
@@LucarioShirona It does make sense. Velma doesn't traditionally fight the way Mega Man does. It's not like they ignored her main abilities, her "main abilities" are her mundane activities. One of Velma's character gimmicks has always been losing her glasses. Taking a mundane action and making it a move is exactly what Phoenix Wright does too. Fighting games do this shit all the time.
What makes Lebron James work and make him unique is the fact that his entire moveset design is based around his career in basketball. It makes more sense for him to have iconic moments in his career than randomly kicking or punching. That defeats the point of his moveset, it's wacky and has him literally balling on his opponents.
@@nuibaba280 You don't get it. What makes Phoenix Wright different is how they represent how his skill sets from his game into a mechanic. Once again, the problem for Velma, it just turns a gag into a move that misunderstands the character from the series she is from. Crawling like how she tries to find her glasses is fine as is.
Lebron James is fine because the moveset he is given understands what he is and play it to his strengths. Except for those pose he makes that became a meme, should have been a taunt.
@@LucarioShirona Wrong. Velma also has a mechanic of finding clues so your criticism and double standard praise for Wright falls flat. Phoenix Wright is literally given mundane activities into basic attacks. He has a move where he sneezes lmao. Velma's "gag" is a consistent part of her character for years. It's legit a gimmick of her personality and what happens to her in so many episodes, it doesn't misunderstand her character. Especially when the rest of her moveset still has her doing detective work with an entire mechanic of finding clues. One move out of many is harmless and still makes sense. She was not misunderstood in MVS in the slightest and you are actively nitpicking and just plain wrong to try to use a single move to prove otherwise. Especially when it references a consistent iconic moment of her character. Losing her glasses is iconic for Velma.
That pose is an iconic moment from his career with it becoming a meme in the process. Complaining to the refs the way he did was a hilarious moment associated with Lebron even outside of memes. Makes more sense than slapping in a lazy generic punch or kick.
My take with MuVs is that I played it for maybe 2 hours on the initial relaunch before uninstalling. I hated the lack of roster, hated the egregious monetization, and hated that characters controlled like liquid ass. For the cost of 1 character pack, you could buy indie platform fighters like Rivals or Slap City, and those actually have good controls and lots of game modes.
I don’t really see how they’d be able to get a ton of actually paying players back into the game. I just can’t imagine they can do anything at this point. It’s just a matter of time before WB inevitably pull the plug.
I completely agree with you, man! I was so excited for this game's rerelease and downloaded it as soon as it was available on console. I played it for a bit and thought it was good...
for a while.
I played it with a friend, did some PvE missions, and grinded a bit for batman and garnet. I was frustrated when I couldn't access certain paths in PvE because I didn't have certain characters. With how little their was to do outside of 1v1 and 2v2 for casuals. And how long it took to get a SINGLE character [batman]. It took me a month to get batman and a week or two to get garnet because I was tired of grinding and put down some money 🥲. I stopped playing shortly after because it was WAY too grindy and demanded my attention (and money) so I could get the "full experience". I am a high school student; if I don't have the time, nor energy to grind in this game; I doubt a full-timer or college student would. I was SO excited when the Power Puff Girls got added! But knowing the state the game was in, I couldn't go back. I hope the devs and WB decide to rethink how to handle this game so that it doesn't go down in flames like so many other games like this. This game has potential and I want to see it flourish, but to do that they may need to do a full overhaul with the state it's in. Love your content Delzethin, keep doing great stuff, man!❤
I am a full timer I played 1-2 hours a day. Completed BP S1 and BP S2, Got Agent smith early. Beta player with 1/3 of the cast unlocked, Marvin, T&J, not counting the 3 that were free(Jason, B Guard, A Smith), Arya, Jake, Le Bron and stripe. Bought 4 chars in season 1, about 4 more in S2 and we got choose up to 2 chars from event.
The funny thing is you want the game flourish yet you can't go back to playing it. I would then dare say that you just never were as invested in the game to begin with. You just loved the idea of the "game". As of S3 the game is in a great state for me to keep playing doing rifts, doing 1v1 ranked.
I waited 1.5 years for the game to come back and played everyday since relaunch.
I really that they finally have the balls to add adventure mode/story mode in Multiversus in style of subspace emissary which it can tell us about the main villain the nothing as reindogs orgins talks about him. Along with more CN reps for Multiversus such as gumball watterson and Nicole Watterson from gumball, amythest and pearl from steven universe, daffy duck, Scorpion from mk, flame princess and princess bubblegum from adventure time, mordecai and rigby from regular show, and pennywise from IT.
I won't lie, I went into this video expecting just the usual whining that Multiversus unfairly gets a lot of. But I think this video is pretty fair and points are explained well, even if I don't fully agree with every point made.
Just for example, I see *too many* people extremely angry that there's only one character a month. That's *way* more characters *way* faster than any other game out there besides Fortnite, which has the absurd money to pull it off. And instead of hoping their favorite characters get in, plenty of people just seem mad that PFG didn't do them already, like their personal picks are needed for the game to be any good (and also people get bitter when a character they don't personally care for get in, like no one else deserves their wished character's spot). This video has none of that though.
I just started playing Multiversus, my only complaint for now is the menu, it’s so confusing and clustered, I pressed something and randomly started some sort of Powerpuff Girls minigame.
Also, coming from Smash, I still haven’t got used to the physics, it’s like everything seems slow or something.
Very well thought out. I really like the idea to let people buy the full roster for a flat amount.
This is one of those games I don’t care to play, but adore from a distance.
End of service ? 2 years? Yeah you must not realize how much potential the game still has
Potential is nothing without action, everything has infinite potential, but only so many things will happen unless something is done to use it
18:57
I can confirm me and 4 other people did unlock Agent Smith for free, but I cannot disagree that it wasn't a nightmare to complete. The experience was equivalent of getting your nutsacks slammed between a door. I would never EVER do that event again, the current grinding is nowhere as bad as it was in Season 1 but it is still is pretty grindy.
I used to played MultiVersus since it brought back, but can’t help it after watching this video that still sucks of being a free to play in the first place. Not to mention of too much monetization it wasn’t so much a surprise.
14:26 I’d argue that title belongs to Wii U
Yeah, at least Ultimate had a campaign
2:23 In that case, how would you go about redesigning Shaggy’s moveset? Dunno if Banana Guard has much else to go off of…
Why tho? This game exists because of the Ultra Instinct Shaggy meme, he's not even an actual fighter. He's 100% just complaining for the video
