Thanks for the top content in these trying times, Ryab. Have an amazing new year's eve and an even better 2021 with lots of health to you and your family.
It’s honestly nice to watch someone play the same way I do! I’m not amazing but at the same time it’s fun to see. And on top of that, NL? Like the first RUclipsr that I started to bench watch at night sneaking my Nintendo 3Ds in my room just to watch a Binding of Isaac video? Like how much more POG can this content be?? LYSM happy New Year!
i would definitely watch content where NL looks through different lines of different openings through the engine and maybe analyzing some past games and what would have been a better book response. the opening stab in analysis is really useful!
When White plays d4 in the Sicilian, Black almost always plays cxd4, which is kind of the point of the opening. For example, according to Chess.com's Opening Explorer, in master games played in your position in game 1, cxd4 was played 77,753 times. Your move, e6, was the second-most popular, played a grand total of 17 times. (You can find Explorer under Learn on the menu.)
You wanted him to trade the queen and bishop for their queen and pawn? If you want to continue playing the game, that's like the last thing you should do
Hey man, just wanted to say because I've seen this quite a bit in your videos - whenever, in the sicilian, they push d4, you capture it with your c-pawn. That's one of the main points in the sicilian, that you exchange one of your flank pawns for one of their center pawn, thus gaining a little bit more center control in exchange for slightly slower development. Also, not doing it just gives you good amounts of trouble.
Hey NL, love the chess series. I don't know how many people would like to see it, but I know I would watch the hell out of a series where you just hashed out openings. I learn quite a bit from your sessions with GothamChess and I'm sure watching you learn some more early games would be just as interesting.
Don't feel too bad about the losses. The Sicilian just has so many main lines to learn. It is probably one of the hardest defenses to learn without REALLY studying. Love to watch you play the Chess regardless of wins/losses :)
Don't study openings, I love how you try to handle them. I also have huge problems with unusual early moves. Love the series. Previously I said that you have no skill only training, now with so many more videos watched with your move explanations I say well done sir :D Mislicks are annoying tho :P Edit: Also Happy New year! it's 2021 overhere now and i'm drunk :D
personally i recommend the Alekhine defense it breaks some of the few rules of chess allowing the game to progress in an interesting way while also still being the classy game of chess we come for.
the london fits the way you play very well find something similar for black and study it well so that you don't lose a bunch of time in the opening making suboptimal moves
You saw the strong moves for your opponent which means it is not that you are worse then then but that they get into better position in the opening (which means that they know the opening better). Maybe if you get out of theory early, your opponents won't know all the best moves. Sicilia defense has a lot of theory behind it, if you go wrong there, people who are experienced in Sicilian can take advantage of mistakes
I mean this is just proof that you could play anything and make it entertainment :) I love the insight and knowledge about chess these videos have taught me. But like random af have you ever played Xcom 2? it's kinda like chess with like aliens lol
I'm absolutely trash at chess but my best game ever was with the sicilian defense:closed, traditional line. I even got a surprise mate on my opponent. It was a surprise to both of us because I didn't know what I was doing. (700 elo)
It was at 17:32 that I realized he could pin the knight to the queen with Qb8... Knight can't take rook or NL takes their queen. He was so close to finding that in the analysis!
...and not just opening lines, but opening concepts and setups. You're not really playing the Siclian unless you know that you are supposed to take on d4. He should look at a few GM games in those openings, not so much for theory but to see how those players treat the opening in general, how they set themselves up. With the Sicilian that is actually hard because the opening is so rich and NL cannot be bothered to learn all this stuff; thus NL would be better off playing the French against e4. In contrast, for the London that study is quite easy, but he has already forgotten what Gotham taught him - his "accelerated London" is nothing of the sort but an unambitious line in the Slav.
Open Sicilian: 1.e4 c5 2.nf3 nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.nxd4 nc6 Typical move order. However, as a 1900 player, I would suggest learning more positional chess, and middlegame theory, as opposed to studying openings. The only extent that you need to know openings before about 2000 is just so that when you leave the opening you're not in a lost position, other than that, it's much better to know what to do, and understand the IDEA behind your opening, rather than the theory (book moves) For example... "In the ruy lopez we're fighting for the center and pinning black's knight to contest central control, and the majority of the war is actually over the center while we focus on developing quickly. " is a lot better than knowing "1.e4 e5 2nf3 nc6 3 Bb5 etc..."
Happy New Year to you, to your beautiful wife and daughter, thank you for all the entertainment you have given us this year, it turned out to be quite necessary. Hopefully 2021 is better. Happy New Year everyone!
I've noticed that when you're low rated there are so many moves to consider at every turn, and as you get better the number of moves you consider shrinks a lot since you're getting better at weeding out bad moves and zeroing in on good moves. There's really no way around it, you have you have your bad ideas punished until your opponents drill your mistakes out of you.
Sicilian is a very complicated opening most of the opening moves are only possible because of the traps that are there in the position. Otherwise its just bad to put your knight infront a pawn that can attack it after nf6 with the pawn on the e file. If they push the pawn there you actually win there pawn. But not in every case. Sicilian is a hard opening id just avoid it. But you do need to know what to do as white or you will get crushed as white also. The main thing to know is that when white pushes d4 you always take with the c pawn. There are no good positions for black if you don't take the pawn because white will push the d pawn and cramp your position every time. And then they will play e5 sometimes and there's nothing you can do except play f6. Which is bad because there are threats of mate in 1.
If you're going to study openings you could do it as the daily chess video. I'm not even that interested in watching opening theory but I feel like it could be fun to watch if it's your content
Maybe have it as a weekly thing, like once a week he can post a theory crafting video about how to use certain tactics and then immediately don't use it in the next episodes to come like in old NL fashion.
That period of doing badly because you are addressing habits that got you to where you are but no longer work is deadly to anyone trying to get better. Risk of demoralization and stopping, or falling back on old habits and stagnating.

By the way, if you're looking for spicy games, the Sicilian is the way to go, just need to brush up a little on the opening. (Forget the Scandinavian, I have no idea what Levy is selling there.)
Levy is of the school of thought that rather than playing mainline openings, you should play some weird sidelines, lines which are slightly sub-optimal but not too bad, learn how to play them a lot better than your opponent who has probably rarely seen them, and then win by being better prepared in those positions.
