@Negative Space It's about an orphan with emotional and substance abuse problems that tries to become the best chess player in the world. So like Sherlock Holmes with chess instead of crime.
@Negative Space Depends on what you like. I have described what the show is like, if that sounds like something you are interested in, then yes. If not, then no.
"This is the thinking man's game" Said multiple games in a row (My favorite atm) *Takes forever to make a move* "We got plenty of time" *Down to 2 minutes left* "We're getting a little short on time here" Can't really judge for the latter though, I feel like I'd let time slip away from me on individual moves too if I played with a timer.

I'm enjoying this so much, I would even (as someone who's watched NL play Isaac for half a decade, and continues to enjoy it) prefer this over Isaac and any other series that NL is making right now.
I thought NL knew a lot about chess when he named openings, it took me this many videos to realize he was reading the names of the openings off the screen
Yo NL, this is literally the best series! I'm so glad I just finished watching The Queen's Gambit and then when I opened RUclips you had a series on chess. Cheers!
It is a testament to Ryan that I have a basic understanding of chess and his commentary and reactions just make it entertaining even when I cant follow all the strategy 😆
This series is great, because it's at a level I can understand. I can actually pause the video and try to find the best move and then sometimes not feel like a complete idiot when I see the move you actually make. The analysis helps to keep it educational as well.
NL, a really good move for when you did your 2 minute think was knight B7. Applying pressure to his bishop. Then follow that with rook A8. If he doesnt react correctly, then you can simply take the bishop and end the game. Also allows you to continue to control the game rather than allow him to take control, which was what happened when you brought the rook back. Loving the series so far!
Loving this series and hope it persists for awhile to come NL. Extremely entertaining and accessible - the talking through of your moves makes it insightful while still having the in-the-moment drama of things like Spelunky, where being slightly distracted can cost you. GG.
Ffs 29:00 pawn to g4 blows him out. It locks his knight out of threatening your bishop, and he doesn't have any pieces that can take advantage of the gap in your king-side defences or the fact that the pawn is orphaned.
This series has cornered the market. Just about every other chess series on RUclips is either GM nonsense or screaming girls. Screaming girls are OK but average chess-joe NL wins.
From someone who plays a lot of chess in their free time, i have to say, the way you analyze games and your thought process during a match are really promising! You make mistakes yeah, but you're constantly thinking about the right things at least, and are playing moves with good chess ideas in mind
If I haven't won a chess match in the first 5 moves, I'm have no chance to win at any point thereafter. It's great hearing commentary at a level that doesn't assume I know anything more advanced than a queen side castle. Loving this series.
in that long move you took so long on you could have also gone g2 pawn to g4 which would have blocked his knight from moving forward sunting his attack it would have also kept your rook in a more agressive possition
Egg lord vs. Hutch in chess as a Christmas present would be so savory, similar chess background, nearly identical ELO, boomer humor would be through the roof, the POGs would be raining down from the heavens, etc... it would be the pinnacle of chess entertainment for me
15:41 was such a puzzle rush scenario. Basically, given correct play by White, Black is forced to either give up his Queen, albeit for a Knight and a Rook, or get checkmated.
I still miss a LOT of obvious moves, but I'm pretty pogged I saw the line on moving the Rook to A8 at 26:25. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you could then move the knight to B7 and threaten the bishop and king on the back lines?
It's so funny to see NL being totally happy, grinning mischievous ... just miliseconds before he realizes not his opponent fucked up but he did xD 15:45 Pure comedy gold
Is it just me, or is he playing at a higher level on this one? Maybe some more of the rust is coming off. The previous episodes his analysis of the board felt pretty comfortable/familiar to me. That first game on this video had some really cool ideas in it that I definitely didn't see. Love the series, looking forward to more!
At 25:10 watching you take that pawn with your rook instead of just forking his rook and pawn with yours killed me because his only move then is to move his rook, because if he takes with his pawn he loses his rook on a8
Lets talk about the Scandinavian defense as seen in the first game of the video. The scandinavian defenses is an uncommon but not bad counter to NLs go to opening of pawn e4 by moving pawn to e5. NL's response of pawn takes e5 is the most common and probably safest response and makes black have to choose between 2 seemingly sub-par options. Black now has to decide if they want to instantly retake e5 with the queen or accept at least temporally being a pawn down. The Mieses-Kotrc Variation is the name for the response when black takes the e5 pawn with their queen. Now normally it is recommended to not bring the queen out to early as it gives the other side a bevy of good moves like NL's knight to c3. However the Mieses-Kotrc variation is an exception to the rule since Black is effectively trading being able to develop pieces and control of the center for a better setup for a future counter attack. Where this game diverged from most games with the Scandinavian defense is rather than moving the queen to immediate safety Black chose to put NL in check with queen e5. While not a bad move it is probably not as good as the alternatives of moving the queen to a5, d6 or back to d8. This is because Black did not move their queen to enduring safety but continued an unsupported attack that just gave NL free development of his light square bishop and an eventual attack on the queen once he can push a pawn to d4 or f4 with support. In short NL played the early game really well while his opponent while not playing badly kinda gave to much advantage to NL with some non-optimal queen moves.
Friend: "Have you watched 'The Queens Gambit'?"
Me: "I've been watching 'The Eggs Gambit'"
I've also seen The Bald's Blunder before
@Negative Space It's about an orphan with emotional and substance abuse problems that tries to become the best chess player in the world. So like Sherlock Holmes with chess instead of crime.
@@robinvik1 What a shit idea for a show, at least on paper.
@Negative Space I don't know, dude. Do you like Sherlock and chess? Then you'll probably like this too.
@Negative Space Depends on what you like. I have described what the show is like, if that sounds like something you are interested in, then yes. If not, then no.
every 10 minute game is
"we have time"
...
opponent has 5 minutes and nl has 1
"He didn't play into my plan, and I would rather he did" OH REALLY
Whenever NL says "Let's get funky, I'm off script" I pog a little harder
The zane cannot be stopped!!
"We have time"
Proceeds to spend 2.5 minutes thinking of a move
And it's the move that kills his game.

NL: talks about a game of Chess as a run
Me, an intellectual: Ahh, yes. Chess, my favorite roguelike
Honestly, it checks all the boxes

@@ben_burnes so chess is pretty much one of the earliest roguelike games?? Damn
Chess960 is Chess as a roguelike
Mind truly blown!
Would that not make Rogue a Chesslike?
Honestly, what a spiced series. It's taking me back to my chess camp days.
I'm enjoying this so much, I would even (as someone who's watched NL play Isaac for half a decade, and continues to enjoy it) prefer this over Isaac and any other series that NL is making right now.
Honest question how does chess camp work is it like a week long chess boot camp or something??
@@j.j.r98 Well, mine was less actual-camp and moreso "come to this building every day for five days". Helped that it was literally down the road.
Wow maxbox
Ahh good ol chess camp. The a3,b3,c3 pawn structure opening
I thought NL knew a lot about chess when he named openings, it took me this many videos to realize he was reading the names of the openings off the screen
Chess, Slasher’s Keep, and the return of GeoGuesser is the most pogged combination in human history. I need an oxygen tank.

Add the Demon souls vods too? Your safety is not guaranteed
geoguesser is the only series i didn't really follow but i'm glad to see it back! Sinvicta had an awesome isaac item tournament on his channel.

I love reading these in my head with NL's Bernie voice, it never gets old
as a chess fan i really hope this series continues for a long time
Strangely, not really a chess fan more of an vailed interest but the commentary and breakdown has kept me coming back.
I know nothing about proper chess but I get extremely pogged when NL does the move that I would have done
Queen-side pog has pinned my gourd king. I don’t know what the analysis is here, but I’m feeling lucky to even be in this position.
Just adding my voice to the chorus of "hey, this series is actually pretty good".
I have to say as a novice, burgeoning chess player this is my favorite content currently on your channel.
15:53 "NOOOOO, I DID MISCALCULATE!!"
MonkaS
Why is this so entertaining? NL just has the perfect personality for this sort of thing, I suppose. The dude is a special youtuber.
"Let's get funky" is NL's codeword for throwing his victory under the bus.
NL going from 5 to 10 minutes chess is like Isaac highway blindness
32:45 *Resigns*
"You played a game featuring the French defense!"

"This bishop is worthless, less than nothing"...

Poetic how the Bishop delivered the crushing blow

My favorite part is when he thinks of a funny move/blunder and goes "Heheheheheheheh".
