  • Finally got my first Islander, the ISL-190. It's a GMT with the Seiko NH34 movement and a world time bezel. How does that work? Let's find out.

If your watch is showing 3:29PM which is equivalent to 1529 the Azores, halfway across the Atlantic are certainly not in the 1600 hour. I've been involved with the military for well over 60 years and am very familiar with GMT. London is not always the same time as GMT. In fact right now GMT is four hours ahead of EDST and London time is five hours ahead. They do have daylight saving time but as you said they may just call it summer time. I lived in England many years ago and do not recall exactly what they call the time change. I just received my Islander Calabro and I love it. I have ISL-191. Thanks for making this video. I did learn some things.

Awesome thank you. Yes pretty sure it is 'British Summer Time', or BST, in the UK. There's a bunch of countries that have some form of DST, but they're not always the same dates so it gets confusing. I know that the UK is nominally 5 hours ahead in the middle of winter or summer, but briefly in fall and spring it's something else.

I just got the green one and love the look and concept. Agree on the bezel concern. To compensate, I just leave London @24 and count backwards or forwards the number of hours on the bezel from my GMT hand which is set to London time. Its not ideal but faster to count forward or backwards than to turn the dial full rotations in the wrong direction

What a great video. Clear and decise. I recently jumped into the watch rabbit hole and have been researching for my first entry level diver. Love the Islander brand, love his reviews and content. This watch is throwing me for a loop lol. I had it narrowed down to the Seiko SRPD55, Orient FAA02004B9 (Kamasu II) or the Islander Bayport….Now, I don’t know WHAT the hell to do!!!???

Too many options better than too few I guess. Get them all?!

I also got the white one last month during the early release and absolutely love it. I think you’re spot on that a bidirectional bezel would be a huge improvement, especially if it was able to keep the clicking which I love on this watch. I’d also like to see the GMT hand with that but if orange at the tip but it still looks great and is easy to read. I’m glad this was my first Islander.

Very good point about the uni-directional bezel.
I have the Black Dial w Yellow highlights and I like the splash of colour on the GMT hand.
    Thanks for sharing.

This is a great video, thank you for explaining the GMT function and world time. I found your explanations extremely helpful in terms of which GMT i will buy, leaning now towards the Seiko one

I have two, monster and samurai, two of my favorites, basically Seiko's but with sapphire, cool dial color, and upgraded bracelet. Can't beat it.

A great review and the concern you raise regarding the bezel is legit. That said, it’s still a great looking watch at a really good price.

Love this design, but in my opinion, even a GMT needs a timing bezel.

Great video, i saw that watch on Islander watch channel before, great purchase for you. If i'm not mistaken you have citizen promaster tough titanium 300m. I'm very interested in that watch and tend to get one. Can you do a review about that watch please and make a comparison with citizen promaster tough bn0211-50e? Thank you.

Im not sure I have time to make a video on it, not yet. But I can say they are very different watches. The titanium is smaller, more wearable, and obv much lighter. I think for actual outdoor work and activity, the 300m is the one you want. The steel bn02xx series looks nice, its a little more distinct, it stands out, I think it's more fun day to day.

2:15 Omega does the same thing for their city on the Omega Seamaster Worldtimer.

But also, if you are travelling from Texas to say for example Cairo, you could just set the GMT to Cairo and the main watch hour hand to Texas so you have always have accurate Cairo time and accurate Texas time right? and just line up Cairo on the GMT when you want to know other timezones? So it tracks 2 timezones always, but the 3rd time zone is manually moving the bezel. right?

There's no 'wrong' way to use a GMT for sure. You can purpose it however it fits your life.
