Agreed. People in politics today, disagreeing over everything, name calling, etc. should take time to think about the real sacrifices these people made. I was fortunate enough to be included in the Baby Boomer generation and lived a great life because of these sacrifices. God Bless them all!

I visited as well in 1995. It’s very moving. I was even rather moved today watching the 80th anniversary commemoration on t.v. here in the States. It’s touching too to see the graciousness of the French, especially those in Normandy, who still appreciate the many sacrifices that were made on their behalf. Let’s never forget either, the brave members of the French Resistance, and those French who fought with the Allies to liberate their own “patrie”. Let’s pray as well, for a just peace in Ukraine and the Middle East. And finally, let’s go Mets in London this weekend!

Some veterans have said that the opening scene from "Saving Private Ryan" is about as close a representation to what is was really like on D-Day. The bullets, the shells, the incredible noise, the screams of the wounded.
Todays generations have no idea what these heroes went through on the 6th of June 1944, not only the allies, but also the German defenders who faced the massive onslaught. For those who never returned, RIP.

I never understood war until I saw Jacob’s ladder. Right now I’m watching saving private Ryan for the first time. I could not imagine storming a beach knowing you are basically a decoy. You have to go head first into your own doom.
Like one of the veterans said, they had 80-100 pounds of gear and jumped into water. My limit is about 40-50 if I need to carry something a short distance by hand. Imagine having double that weight strapped to you and being told to jump into some water. If you survive the water you’re facing what could be an even worse demise. The fact anyone made it is a miracle

There is a reason they are referred to as the greatest generation of our time. They faced unbelievable odds but yet pushed forward. If not for these men the world would be a much different place today. Many were just teenage boys at the time,16,17,and 18yrs old. So many lied at the recruitment offices right after the attack on Pearl Harbor. So you had boys with revenge on their minds and patriotism in their hearts. God bless every damn one of them alive and dead! Because whenever I see the actual film of these guys running from the landing crafts, many dont get but a few steps before their lives are taken, but others continued on fighting all the way up the beach. And I think about the age many of them were and how frightened they must have been. But yet many kept fighting to the very death. I've been in combat. I've also been in situations where the odds were against us. But I wasn't 16, 17, or 18 yrs old either. The awe of it to me is incredible. God bless them all and God bless America.🇺🇲

    D-DAY WW-II 80 YEARS PAST : !!
D-Day raised the curtain on the conflict
That fore shadowed the end of Hitler's dream.
The largest joint combat landing ever
Though the blood from both sides flowed like a stream.
When their boats hit the sand, their ramps went down
And all within paid a visit to hell.
They jumped out to do good for their country
And to kill the enemy without fail.
They fought the Germans, tides, winds and the waves
    In conditions not easily foreseen.
By night the battle was in our favor
With bravery, valor, death, and men who scream.
The corpses littered the beach for five miles
Though heroism had carried the day.
With literally thousands dead or wounded
Those who were left were determined to stay.
They faced great odds and chose not to protest
And won the war that put evil to shame.
Most came home, married and raised their babies
But those who could not we recall with pain.
    By Tom Zart!

Lyrics to Green Beret by Barry Sadler (about Viet Nam) but can be used for any war and so appropriate for the 80th anniversary of D Day. Barry Sadlet died in 1988, 49 years young.
    Lyrics
    Fighting soldiers from the sky
Fearless men who jump and die
Men who mean just what they say
The brave men of the Green Beret
    Silver wings upon their chest
    These are men, America's best
One hundred men will test today
But only three win the Green Beret
Trained to live off nature's land
    Trained in combat, hand-to-hand
Men who fight by night and day
Courage take from the Green Berets
    Silver wings upon their chest
    These are men, America's best
One hundred men will test today
But only three win the Green Beret
Back at home, a young wife waits
Her Green Beret has met his fate
He has died for those oppressed
    Leaving her his last request
Put silver wings on my son's chest
Make him one of America's best
He'll be a man they'll test one day
Have him win the Green Beret

We are here for the celebrations in Normandy. We had the honor of meeting a veteran in St.-Mere-Eglise yesterday. And 80 years ago, young men, almost children, fought against each other. There was death, suffering and misery on both sides, but Germany was freed from the plague of Nazism. Today, 80 years later, I cannot accept any blame for what happened back then, but I can and will ensure that it is never forgotten and that the National Socialist deluded idiots never regain power

This is incredible to see.... not in a good way but an important one! Maybe the most important day for the western world!
Those Heros who fell and the lucky ones that survived.... We in the U.S.A. and around the world owe them EVERYTHING! The fact that they ran directly into machine gun fire, knowing so many wouldn't come back....
They did not give up nor retreat, Through insurmountable odds, they pushed forward until Victory!
We cannot repay them, or bring the dead back to life...But we can Honor those, both living and dead, for all that they sacrificed on that day, and ALL the days until the end of that terrible war!
On June 6th, Please take time out of your day to Thank and Remember all the Men and Women who fought for Good to triumph over Evil.

God Bless all our WWII veterans. Russia should have been invited as the USSR (Russia) lost 27 million lives to defeat Nazis and Hitler. On the 80th Anniversary of D-Day today, there are ceremonies honoring the American heroes who landed on the beaches of Normandy and defeated the Nazis. This is as it should be. What is not right, however, is that rarely are we honoring in our ceremonies the Soviet (Russian) heroes who bore the brunt of the battles to defeat fascism in World War II.
Americans are not surprised when they hear that historians distort the truth, but most of us believe it is foreign historians, not ours, who are in the business of distortion.
The truth about World War II is that the war against the Nazis was essentially already won a year or more before D-Day when American and British soldiers fought their heroic battle on the beaches of northern France. When General Dwight D. Eisenhower and the troops under his command landed at Normandy, however, the Soviet Union had already fought and won the decisive battles of the war.
The “second front” opened by our side came, in fact, much later than the Soviet Union had hoped. Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin had been pressuring U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill for almost two years for the opening of a second front in Europe, arguing it would have spared many of the millions who eventually died on the continent.

Please go fight with the Neo Nazis in Ukraine. Remember that part of Ukraine fought with Hitler and Nazis. The U.S. relationship with Ukrainian fascists began after the Second World War. During the war, units of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN-B) took part in the Holocaust, killing at least 100,000 Jews and Poles. Mykola Lebed, a top aide to Stepan Bandera, the leader of the fascist OUN-B, was recruited by the C.I.A. after the war, according to a 2010 study by the U.S. National Archives.
The government study said, “Bandera’s wing (OUN/B) was a militant fascist organization.” Bandera’s closest deputy, Yaroslav Stetsko. From the start of the 2013-2014 events in Ukraine

@@amandapeluso4217 there were more Ukrainians fighting for the red army then Ukrainians who fought for the SS/Germany but i guess Russia doesn't tell you about that huh?

@@SKIPPY20 I guess Ukraine doesn't tell you that they were fighting also for Hitler. The U.S. relationship with Ukrainian fascists began after the Second World War.
From the start of the 2013-2014 events in Ukraine.

@SKIPPY20 I guess your name suits you, skippy. You should brush up on history. Bandera and Neo Nazis are in Ukraine. Zelensky applauding an SS Nazi collaborator from WWII in Canada September 2023 says it all.

If there was ever real evil in the world, it was the Nazi regime, these men and women are not as respected as they should be, if it wasn’t for them only God knows how different the world would be right now, A. Hitler had to be stopped, and these people were the ones who stopped him. I thank you, I salute you, you are the real heroes of the world, and I write about heroes, (I’m a writer) I cannot thank you enough for your service. God bless!!! 👏👏👏🙏

You need a MODERN HISTORY LESSON BUB!
      True heroes of Democracy past & present today June 6th 2024 in Normandy, D.C. & Virginia WW2 D-Day Memorials…
From the surviving WW2 D-Day Veterans able to travel and be there, to President Biden & President Macron and many others. Of course President Zelenskyy, and his emotional moment with a WW2 Vet, who was so happy to meet him with an embrace and praise, “You’re a saviour of the People!” as Zelenskyy replied “No no! You are the saviour!”…
While President Biden’s excellent speech reminds us what Ukraine is fighting for vs. Invader Putin, how it is very similar to the pre-WW2 Nazi occupation movements. That "protest voting" for a Fascist or Useless 3rd Party choice because your POTUS choice didn't win or isn't 100% perfect on every issue does not work. That "America First” movements for Isolationism here in the U.S. DO NOT WORK VS. FASCISM!!! That Putin IS this generations Hitler, that Loser J. CONVICTED FELON Trump IS a useful idiot Danger to Democracy via his anti-democratic/anti-rule of law/anti-US Constitution actions the past 8 years and his desire to be the next Putin, Kim-Jun etc…
Thank you so much D-Day Vets for meeting the moment 80 years ago. Courage to not just call out Fascism, but to sacrifice the ultimate price. Thanks to all Veterans like my dad & uncle (both Vietnam Vets) for your service!
Now we do OUR PART Big Tent Dems, Indies, Never Trumpers and even the frustrated Ultra Progressives not happy with Biden Harris due to issues like Gaza...
This is a fragile thing, this Democracy, four generations of Americans in the U.S. have not had to be drafted, we have since had many freedoms taken for granted. Until June 2022 now thanks to naivete, bad power hungry SCOTUS & GOP Congress via Trump, corpo bothsiding media, tech billionaires and social media warfare from the ALWAYS underlying threats of Fascist Autocrats.
Looking back through history is an excellent way to make generational choices in the present, to protect all that we care about for everybody’s future - Human/Civil Rights, Planet Crisis, Healthcare & SS, Stopping War Criminals named Putin & Netanyahu etc, and it all starts with preserving & protecting one thing folks.
Out of both RESPECT and NECESSITY to all those that met their crucial moment 80 years ago, and gave their lives in the face of tyranny, we do not despair! LET’S MEET THIS MOMENT Boomers! My Gen X peeps! My younger sister’s Millennials! Gen Z & Gen Y! GOTV BIDEN BLUE WAVE 2024 AND BEYOND!

It’s amazing how we can be forced to remember all Anglo focused atrocities on the planet. However, anything regarding black, brown, native, etc are to be forgotten. Remember who writes the history books.

White, Black, brown, native, etc all fought in Normandy, as you can even see in the small sample of veterans in this video. The fact you think the d-day anniversary celebration is only about white people is nonsense. Also, the people who write history books are the people who write history books.
