- In this one-off special to mark the anniversary of D-Day, the actress Vicky McClure embarks on an emotional journey with her 97-year-old grandfather, Ralph, to learn about his role in the most extraordinary single day of the Second World War. Vicky sets out to understand how Ralph - then still a teenager from Nottingham - found himself in the Royal Navy and at the centre of a world-changing battle on the Normandy beaches on June 6, 1944. The pair visit the only surviving example of the type of landing craft he trained and crossed the Channel on, and discover aerial pictures believed to show his flotilla landing at Normandy - before travelling back to the beach he last visited almost 80 years ago. I am that french man on the beach and I thank the team who filmed that event. It’s such good memories !
Thank you for sharing that sequence on RUclips !
When I spoke to Ralph I thought the cameras were off and that’s why we have such a spontaneous interaction.
All the best to Ralph and Vicky (I started to Watch her movies yesterday 🤗😘👍)
Terry, it was touching. Shed a tear, even. Tremendous respect shown. Raw. Unscripted. Beautiful.
@@pmccoy8924 it was very sincere and spontaneous I felt a very very strong emotion. The fact is that as I was on my way home the team told me cameras went on filming while I had in mind nothing had been filmed I came back thinking I hope I see the result one day and I did ! 😀 happy guy I told Vicky I had a satellite dish and I already knew Itv 1
It was lovely for you to stop and give your respect to him. Sadly it is either not known/taught to a lot of today's youth about what those men went through, not only that day but every day, so that we are free today.
@@mrmrgaming I do my best to transmit the memory I even wrote and recorded a song about Omaha beach it’s on my RUclips Channel
Respect sir God bless you 🙏 🇬🇧
We are all the French man on the beach - showing our utmost respect and gratitude.
They are called the "Greatest Generation" for a reason.
@@carlj7466 Whatever! Grow up. The word racist is so over used these days.
@@frenchfan3368 bruh in denial about the fact that was indeed one of the most racist generations. Dark skinned people couldn't even fight with the white people so you obviously know nothing about it 🤣
@@carlj7466you’re an arse….
@@carlj7466😂
@@keithrudd8003 you're ignorant to facts. Anyone who wasn't white could even fight with the white men. Explain that lil troll
What a great man he is. Look after him for us all.
I was there last june and will be again this year for probably my final visit to remember those brave men, an Uncle of mine landed on Gold beach on D-Day he was KIA on the 18th of June fighting between Bayeux and Caen, it's almost unbelievable he was just 17 years old, i visited his grave last year in Bayeux.
God bless this man,a tough generation ,
Beautiful comment.
My mother and I visited the Beaches of Normandy in 2000. Moving experience to stroll the sand of Omaha Beach. My uncle, my mother’s brother, was killed in action in North Africa in November 1942. My siblings and I never had a chance to know our uncle.
The Greatest Generation, the likes of which we will never see again. Men of character and undaunted courage, to quote historian Stephen Ambrose.
My father landed on Omaha Beach. We lost him a few years ago at the age of 92. He wore his WWII Veteran cap proudly. When he came home to America he brought a French war bride and an eight month baby girl - me - with him.
Ms. McClure you are lucky to still have your grandfather in tour life.
Your father's legacy lives on in you and your family. Thank you for taking the time to share his story. How wonderful it is that you are a living part of that story; the new life that came into the world as a result of the choices that generation made to serve, to sacrifice, and to save.
What a beautiful message. I thank your dad in my song recorded on Omaha Beach, you can Watch it on you tube, search for Shoemaker and Wood crosses in Normandie
All the best from France

"Suite, booted, with your medals on." Blessed to have him still here.
Im a 77year old granddad and visited the D Day beaches and war graves years ago, poor health will take me soon but i enjoyed freedom because of the sacrifices of his generation. ❤
❤
What a remarkable man and what a wonderful moment. My dad landed on Juno Beach alongside the Canadians. He passed away in 2003.
He fought for my freedom, incredible heroes.🙏 I went from Holland to the beaches there a few times already, just because we must walk there, and feel what they did for freedom, what they did for us.
@@johannes2489 Each countries remembers ww2 differently. I have had the great privilege of retracing some of my grandfathers journey from the beaches though holland. The dutch have a particular fantastic tradition of remembrance. A friend took us to a number of cemeteries in the Netherlands all immaculately maintained as i understand by locals. School children are taught a ton about the war, some towns learn of the particular unit and men who liberated them. In my short visits in the rain, out of the way cemeteries i would expect to be empty had the odd group passing though, these were not tourists as i was but dutch paying their respects. The visitor books were packed full of notes. many other books i have looked at in other countries had many years of visitors notes as they were not visited frequently, but these books in holland were full. My friends read a few of the notes, one stuck with me in particular. It said something about i thank you for your sacrifice for ever day i enjoy my freedom. There was always a good bond when traveling in holland especially when getting into history and the bonds with Canada. It is sort of a funny odd frendship that has no other particular reason to be other than born out of our shared experiences in ww2.
If you didn't have tears there is something wrong with you what a great man , such a different generation compared to today 😢
What a great moment. I am always impressed how middle age and older French have never forgotten those days in 1944. Hopefully the younger generation will continue that tradition even when all of the greatest generation are gone.
That’s beautiful, my grandfather was there but passed away in 2021.
Everyone should be as grateful as that French gentleman .
What an awesome couple of minutes.
Thank you so much.
God bless x
Wow, my grandad was there too. My nana always said he was never the same man when he came back. He passed away in 1952 aged only 40 years old.
Dear Vicky thank you for taking your grandad Ralph to Normandy and the landing beaches.
My father was a Welsh Guardsman and served from 1938 till 1944, he went to France with the BEF and was evacuated in 1940. Don't know what he did apart from guarding Buckingham Palace and the Bank of England. plus training of course for D Day when he went back for a second time. I was born in the April of 1945 from mum and dads celebration of wars end.
In 1995 I bought one of the famous Dunkirk Little Ships and in 2000, 2005 and 2010 had the pleasure of sailing Lazy Days across the channel with many of the Association of Dunkirk Little Ships fine fleet. We would be the guests of the town of Dunkirk and many Dunkirk Veterans would make the crossing by ferry and we'd join them in a service of remembrance. During the 15 years I owned Lazy Days I would meet many vets as I sailed her along the UKs rivers and the east coast. It's a strange feeling to have a gentleman salute your boat as we passed through a lock or moored in a harbour. They of course were welcomed onboard for a cup of tea laced with brown milk.
Thank you Ralph for your service.
Bawling my eyes out here in Australia. My late father & his four brothers fought the Japanese in New Guinea. All gone now. But a sincere thank you to your “Granddad”, all his mates, & all allies for laying their lives on the line all those years ago. So you should be proud of him! True heroes in every sense of the word.👏🏼 “Lest We Forget”…🇦🇺
tell your grandad i am proud of what he and others gave for our freedom, respect.
It's rare that an individual can be viewed as "everyman". A Frenchman walking on his beach extends the deep gratitude felt by all who thank this veteran for his unselfish actions so long ago.
We can never repay what we owe to those brave men. Many of whom never lived to see home again. For without their sacrifices we would have none of the freedoms we enjoy today.
For a starter we could try to stop the extreme right from repeating history by elections in the democracy these men and women gave us.
@@woutleus Always some idiot who tries to spoil it.
The creeping authoritarianism we are seeing today is coming exclusively from the hard Left.
@@woutleus Amen!
Forever grateful to the heroes. What would we do if it ever happened again? We’d be screwed!
@@woutleus Ironically YT censored my comment in response because it referenced far left authoritarianism.
Lovely man and a grateful granddaughter and passing grateful french man. Very touching.
I am 78 and a Vietnam Vet and this brought tears to my eyes.
So moving to see that man greeting this vet. I’m in tears. I never realised how much it meant to the freedom of the world. 80 years later, I thank them all.
Ce documentaire m a ému ...mon oncle le frère de ma mère a participé au dday...avec les Canadiens les anglais.un des rares français décoré de la victoria cross . honneur a ce vieil homme.merci 🇬🇧🇨🇵
🇬🇧♥️🇫🇷, may we never forget the sacrifices these men made
What was his name? I can find anyone of that description, sounds an interesting story.
Vicky, Ralph is a member of a very special generation and I would like to thank him for the things he did. My Father (who had me late in life) served right through the war from 2nd September 1939 the day before war was declared, to Dunkirk evacuation, to The North African campaign, then up through Italy, where he was demobbed. He lost a lot of friends in many battles, and I know it affected him that he could never sleep soundly afterwards. He passed when I was 19, but I would like your grandad and the men like him to know how proud I am of my father, and those who served around them throughout the war. Thank Ralph.
I am in tears. This man is from the greatest generation. Humble and strong. Thank You Sir from America.
I'm crying as I write this comment..Vicky you are very lucky to have a grandfather still. They were the Greatest Generation.
Thank you, good sir. Typically understated and modest. What a generation.......
Your Grandfather is a true British hero. What an amazing man he is, look after this fantastic man for us all, please. ❤. Giving you all my hugs. Sadly, my late Great-Uncle Walter John Robertson couldn't make the 70th Anniversary of the Landings. He passed away (25th January 2014 aged 92), before the 70th Anniversary. Guve your Grandfather a hug from me xxx

I would have cried talking to this man, standing in the presence of a true hero. Realizing what this man has been through and seen.
What a hero and a gentleman that put tears in my eyes god bless you sir and thank you
Thank you for recording the spoken word of a veteran from that day. I think if the general public understood the human cost of taking that beach - wave after wave of troops being cut down as they tried to come ashore - they might not take their freedoms for granted.
What a wonderful film, thank you, but most of all thank you Ralph for keeping us all safe.
I’m a 45 year old man, rough around the edges as they say. I have seen and been through some shite in my days. But I can’t imagine what this gentleman has done and seen. You, all of you that fought and served in WW2, have my utmost respect. God bless all of you, you will not ever be forgotten. And, Thank You.
A real, true, utter bloody hero. Thank you Mr. McClure.
this video should have millions of views
what a beautiful moment when the stranger approaches him
so much respect and admiration for every soldier who bravely fought during WWII
if not for their sacrifice, the world would look very different today, and many of us wouldnt be here
my grandfather served in the military from 1941-45. wounded 3 times. his whole family was killed by the nazi's. he was the only survivor. he never once spoke of that time in his life. never wanted to relive it. but every v-day he'd put on his military uniform with all his medals. he was proud that he liberated the world from the worst evil that ever existed. i'm in tears just thinking about him. bec most of the world has no clue how brave these soldiers were. no idea how important that moment in history is.
This was absolutely a Happy Heart Breaking Video. Tears are in my eyes as I try to type. First a Thank You to the soldier for what he did for freedom. Plus his granddaughter for bringing him to that beach and honoring her Brave Grandad Soldier. But! For the passerby to come upon them and to PAY HONOR AND RESPECT AND A THANK YOU FOR HIS SERVICE THAT DAY. Priceless!!!!!!! I love listening to these Brave men tell there stories of that Monumental Day.Thank you again for this video! He is one of my Many Heroes!
When I backpacked around Europe in the 80’s, I went through customs and the older gentleman there looked at my passport and his eyes lit up, and in French said, “Oh, our Canadian brothers!” They were so grateful for what the Canadian contingent accomplished in their liberation. I’ll never forget that moment, and felt so proud.
Beautiful moment ❤️ I'm 70 and have a tear in my eye Crack on hero 🇬🇧👍🍻
“I was born just after the war and if not for you I would not be here, Thank you” our vets, the greatest generation are on their last leg. Do not, near Never permit the evil they fought against come back and take roots again. Thank for your service Grandad!
We do now and forever will owe so much to men like him. Amazing to see this.
How proud they all must be if him, what a wonderful man. I would loved to have had a grandad like him. All mine had passed by the time I was 3. We will never see the likes of his generation again. ❤
One the men of the best generation in human history. The world thanks you. I thank you.
Instant legend status - well deserved along with all his comrades.
A sweet granddaughter. Giving her granddad so much respect.
Terriblement émouvant cet hommage de cet homme à ce vétéran . Ne jamais laisser dans l'oubli les sacifices consentis par ces soldats venus d'autres horizons lointains pour porter secours à ceux qui étaient opprimés !
Beautiful to see the French man acknowledge Vicki's granddad. He echoed my sentiments and millions across the world❤
We can never repay what they did for us. Thank you for your service and thank you for our freedom. God Bless you ❤
God bless you for this. So important. God bless Mr. McClure. A true warrior.
Seem to have got some grit in my eyes. God bless him and all who were involved. Forever in our memories.
So modest about his achievements such a lovely man I'm not surprised she's bursting with pride. Lest we forget ❤
Now this is what a hero look like thankyou sir
Thank Terry for this. I have tears running down my face watching this. You and I are about the same age and know how much these men suffer for us. Thank you for showing your respect, on behalf of all of us, to this old soldier ❤️❤️❤️

Great to see such a touching tribute to one of England's and the Allied force's heroes....but what that French man said was absolute gold. Bravo to the both of you.

Thank you, Mr. McClure for your brave and distinguished service to mankind that enabled Europe to live in freedom versus oppression. God Bless you, Sir. I'm proud of her grandfather and my grandfather who retook the Philippine Islands. This video is timely and heartfelt.
My father was there Scot’s guards regiment….I wish he was here now. Hug his Ralph for me…❤❤❤❤
Made me cry too. Can you imagine realising the enormity of it, and then seeing someone who was there on that day, did what they did, and being able to shake their hand? The significance is overwhelming.
And it’s because of that absolute Gentleman and countless others we live the life we do today.
THAT'S WAS SO BEAUTIFUL AND SO TRUE WHAT THAT GENTLEMEN SAID THANK YOU VERY MUCH
What they went through they got us our freedom 😢😢❤
What a beautiful celebration of life. Thank you for sharing your grandfather with us. I got misty when the frenchman reached out to connect. Mad respect to everyone involved with this video.
What a beautiful moment and sentiment by the passerby. Thankyou sir, for remembering their sacrifice.
I have been to the Normandy beaches twice and the American cemetery at Omaha….the energy of sorrow is palpable,….so important to visit with gratitude. ❤️❤️❤️
Let’s all agree too, what a beautiful granddaughter 👍
What a great grand daughter that great man has.
These men, everyone of them are national heros👏
Bless this man ❤his daughter and that lovely passer by who meant every word he spoke, heroes saved us all ❤
It was a pleasure to watch the encounter of the two gentlemen. One of which participated in a world changing event that countless others benefited from including the onlooker on the beach who showed his appreciation and respect for his participation decades before.
Unimaginable what these brave young men faced, so we can live in freedom today. ❤❤❤
Thank you Ralph from Texas. 🇬🇧
I started crying. Very moving..thanks to your grandad. We have our freedom. God bless your grandad and all who served our great country. We shall very forget you. Thank you god bless all the young man and woman who gives there lives for us the the next generation to follow.
this is the respect these servicemen all deserve, pulls at the heart strings
A very proud granddaughter, and rightly so. If it was wasn’t for your grandads generation we wouldn’t have the freedoms we take for granted today. Thank you Sir.
Heroes don't always wear capes he's a legend thanku for your sacrifice 🙏
Beautiful - what a gent and wonderful gran daughter - we salute you
Love and miss my grandad, this made me cry that relationship is special since he went feeling like my arms been cut off
Wow! I visited Ouistreham some twenty years ago and saw the beach and some of the houses filmed back in June 1944, yet this short video tops everything. Hard to put the gratitude of my generation that were born after the war into words, other than to say thank you so much.
Made me cry, the horrors those who were there went through, we can never forget the sacrifices they made for freedom. God bless you all. ❤
I visited those beaches for the 50th anniversary, I want to thank your grandfather and his comrades for giving me the life I have now. My grandfather passed away in 1988, I missed the opportunity to get his story.
It's so upsetting that what these men and woman did for us back then to save our country, and to now look at what our country has become, it angers me so much as the things they had to go through and worst of all who died for our country is just absolutely heart breaking, and I salute every single one of you and thank you all what you did and went through may god bless you all
Yep that has got me tears running down my face . Thank you also 👏👏👏
Such bravery for such young men. Wow.
If this gentleman was out of uniform and just walking down the street youd never imagine what he must of gone through ....so a lesson to all of todays youth ..respect your elders , study history & and never judge a book by its cover !!! ..God bless you sir and Ty 🇬🇧
Thank you Vicky for making time for this. Very touching!
This is as so amazing. We all see footage of the war but to see the real man today who was so very young at the time do such a courageous thing makes it so real. I’m stumbling through this! What I really mean is thank you sir! We owe you a great debt! All of us!
Best Grandad EVER, a true hero.
Made me cry too. What lovely heartfelt words from that gentleman on the beach. What a lovely, respectful grand-daughter. Thank you from New Zealand 🇳🇿
