I really wish they would give us an apartment lot type too. I love apartments, but they are just so limited. I would love to make tons of apartments in my game lol. It’s good that there are ways to still kind of make apartments, but I wish it was possible to make fully functioning ones. I agree that this would work well with roommates, but I so wish there could be couple, family, and friend group roommates plus the option of roommates having pets, etc., instead of just singles. It would be so much better!

It doesn't allow you to replicate the apartments as the EA ones work (i.e. with the other apartments greyed out), but you can use roommates and locked doors to sort of achieve that (though sometimes that goes all wonky.)

I wish we'd get an update to the City Living or a completely EP or GP that includes apartments like they had in The Sims 2 where you could build them from scratch and have multiple people move in. Apartments from Eco Lifestyle seem to be build like normal house and just set up as an apartmen while the ones in city living seem more similar to the ones in The Sims 3 where they have a shell building and then they made apartments on top of the shell. I feel like adding apartments in The Sims 4 is doable, but I'm not sure if they'll ever do it. Hopefully they do!

okay this is soooo friggin cool, i live in an apartment on the 10th floor (in my country that's quite the norm for most people, houses are rare and uh rich?) and i've alwayssss wanted to recreate it in the sims, but ive always stumbled into this exact same problem where custom apartments don't exist; and since apartments usually have windows not on all sides of the house, building them like a house in the sims required me quite a lot of specific tree placement to hide the barren walls with no windows where they're not there irl; tldr yours came out SO COOL its like what i imagined and dreamed of mine looking like, stairs and freises are so annoying that i gave up lmao.
But after getting annoyed i made mine more simple by adding like a REALLY TALL foundation that mimics the first floor, and a staircase that leads to the front door of the apartment and made it on the second floor. (definitely no chance of doing a 10th floor custom apartment so 2nd floor is good for me!!)
Anyways this was really fun to watch because i've been trying to do this exact specific thing for so long. Gym room and vending machine area are such a great idea! Other alternatives i came up with for empty spaces in the building is an art gallery (like if your sim is a successful artist where u can pretend its their own exhibition/museum of their best works) or other museum-esque things for your sim's hobby like a pretend knitted clothing store (as if you rent a room their for their needs), or a community garden, or a swimming pool area, or like a cafe thing, or maybe even one of those food stalls where u hire someone to work there when u need to. ANYWAYS lovelovelove this concept of working around EA restrictions and still making your dream apartment be an apartment. (aaaand you can always get a rooftop dragonfruit garden to pay for it hehehe)

I love playing with a large household because it’s more of a challenge but having a million kids is no fun. So I love playing in “apartment” buildings or other multi family living spaces like this.
Currently I have a two parent two child family with a dog in the same household as a young adult sim just starting out, an adult workaholic bachelor, and an elder all living in the same building. I love playing out the different dynamics of this household and the challenge of making sure each sim is fulfilled.

There are two obstacles when you use this method.
      - You pay for all the bills on the lot and a sizable apartment can get very expensive while the roommate's rent contribution is relatively low (+/- 200 simoleons usually)
      - Anything that breaks is on you to fix and if the roommate doesn't keep their needs up for any reason (even if they have the means to fill needs available) they will up and leave after one warning. So, at least one person in your household has to be the designated maintenance person.
Also, every fridge on the lot shares the same inventory. So, good luck keeping the neighbors out of your snacks.

I've made a few apartment buildings and moved in "non-related" sims. My group is usually an elder woman or man, a newlywed couple, a family of three (any version of parents and kid or parent and kids) and a gay couple. Sometimes I leave out the family and add pets to the other households. They all get jobs where they disappear to work and bring home the money. This works okay as it is one "bank account" and all money goes into one pot. I call it "rent". Cooking is also not a big deal as every fridge has the same food. So, one sim that loves to cook will fill the fridge with meals and the others can share. Mail doesn't really matter in the S4. I haven't done one in a while so I might give it a try. The last was Joey, Chandler, Monica and Rachael from friends living in one of the brownstones with two apartments on the same floor (Culpepper or Jasmine). Once I made a big Victorian house and divided it up into a ground floor apartment where the elder lady who owns the original house lives. A second-floor apartment for a newlywed or gay couple. An attic apartment for an artist, painter or writer. And a basement apartment for the handyman/ground's keeper. I haven't thought about that one for years. I might make a new one. Thanks. Sorry if I rambled.

if they wanted to introduce custom apartments i wonder if they could introduce 'apartment markers', similar to the wildlife markers of country living. like, you build your apartment building, and then you enter a special buildmode that lets you select all the rooms that make up one apartment with a marker. you use some function that 'saves' that apartment, then you get those markers back and move on to the next.
once you finalise the amount of apartments in a building, it calculates the amount of 'must haves' your building requires to function as an apartment building and tells you if X floor doesn't have elevator access, for example. it calculates each individual apartment's rent with however the game already does it, and also sets a landlord role that handles the total costs of running the building if you select a sim to own the building via menu, whether they live in the building or not. a sim could also buy a lot/house and convert it into an apartment building with their own funds if desired.

I’m looking forward to downloading this lot and trying some things out.

I have a four unit apartment I made with 8 Sims divided into each and I locked the main doors for each apartment. I just go between each Sim, but it's kind of fun watching then autonomously use things and walk around.

I was inspired by this build that I made a condominium where the old salt house was at. This was with four apartments (2 of which are two stories), pool, spa, Cafe, day care, playground and gym with plenty of activities like grilling and chess table. Yea that build was over 365k, but my theory is that you could choose one of the apartments and block off the rest or do roommates.
Each apartment was custom made for each of the families that live there, like one is roommates going to college with one of them is lgtbq. Then a family of two parents with their two teenage kids. Those are in the two bed one bath apartments.
The others are in the two stories apartments. One is a single mom who is into yoga and is also a politician with her kid and a walk in closet. Another was a Japanese inspired apartment with two parents and three kids having their own room.
I quite enjoy making multi families homes and wish we have that option in sims.

I've done this a couple times! It's actually really fun to decorate the other apartments and use the roommates function from (university?) And like lock the doors so everyone can only go in their own apartment (also helps with the bills lol)

One thing that you can do to make the apartment lot more believable is lock each apartment's door to everyone except the Sim you want to live on the chosen apartment (from the Sims perspective the "apartment" is just their room ) , but it works pretty well beacuse from your perspective they cannot enter each other apartments because each apartment belongs to a different Sim .

I want an "apartment stuff" pack. Where they add the ability to make functional apartments from scratch, an apartments lot type, and some random extra bits and bobs that would suit an apartment stuff pack. That's my dream pack

Tbh you could just make other apartments and lock the door for everyone but one sim for each apartment. Then just have the Gym bar etc whatever you want to put into it public.

A lot of apartment buildings have a lobby with a front desk with a doorman where mail can be dropped off, delivery drivers can be let in and you can get help dragging your groceries in from the street when you’re illegally stopped in the road to unload most of it before parking

You really need to collaborate with James Turner, and create the Bigwallet Legacy challenge based on his Rags to Riches series with the Bigwallet Family!!! ( doesn’t have to be the Bigwallet, but does have to follow the linage of each pack. How you want to reorder the packs is up to you, but I would suggest with the legacy challenge, start sort of chronological like starting out on building a farm off the grid and with each generation update that farm house off the grid to maybe a fancy mansion on the grid and keep expand that mansion and choose a new heir with a new generation to start the rags to riches all over again

I had an idea about just locking the doors of every “apartment” and as you add people they’d stay in their own spaces. However they’d have to be in the same household

I kind of did the same thing but building a row of attached one story cottages which are very typical in Irish towns, and them I renovated them individually 😅 but there's a roommate mod that I use, can't remember by who, that basically let's you have roomates that aren't a part of your household and then I just lock the front doors to everyone except the Sims that live in that specific house ☺️

You should add in an apartment as each gen moves out. Do the yellow gen moves out and gets an apartment in the same bldg, etc etc until you fill it and then you renovate apts when the eldest gen dies for whoever needs it

  • @Willoweleanor

When I build apartment complexes, I put all my “neighbors” in my household. Then I just lock the doors of the separate apartments for the neighbors. Then no sim goes into each other’s apartments, but can still socialize with each other!

When I want to play with ‘custom apartments’ I furnish the entire thing and get roommates for the other units, that way I can’t play them and I can lock them out of my apartment so it’s like a real building.
