I was raised in Algeria and I even relate to him.. He reminds me of another great American Ralph W Emerson. The Rural Americans are well consituted men.
I am a 20 year old boy from Germany that has nothing to do with horses whatsoever (Couldn't be further from a cowboy haha). But I enjoy your videos very much. I already know some of the things you speak about in your videos but it is the things I didn't knew earlier that make this channel worth watching for me. This channel is honest, it is full of truth and I learn things I probably couldn't elsewhere (fixing fence for instance). My son is 4 now and I’m worried a lot about him growing up in this world. It doesn’t help his father died when he was 2, and doesn’t have a lot of healthy male role models around. Our native language is Dutch but I’ve been teaching him English too, so when he’s old enough can introduce him to video’s like this. Thank you for caring enough to pass this on.

I was very happy to watch this video. As a cancer patient with terminal cancer. I have had the same thoughts about my legacy. My wife and I never had children, not our fault. However, I try to instill the old ways into my nieces and nephews. It has brought us great pleasure. This video was such an awesome reminder of why it is important to help these children. Btw...I was an attorney for 20 years who defended police officers. I have always said it is not the training a police officer receivers that fails them, its the heart and character. Thank you again!
Mark, being an uncle is a very important role, or it can be. Yea, you can show the kids some mischief, but they often really respect us (I'm the old uncle in my family, too). They emulate us, whether we do good or bad, so good on you for actually putting forth an effort into your nieces & nephews. I cherish the 'uncle' job. I show the young'uns skills like sharpening knives, how to rope, what wild plants to eat..just whatever lesson comes to mind. They all want to be like their "crazy uncle Aaron from the South", so they soak up lessons like sponges. I'm careful not to show them too much of the bad side, like smoking or real filthy language. My wife and just celebrated our 60thAnniversary with our 3 girls , 1 available husband and 9 grandchildren. At our dinner, I was able to share our story of love, and trust in God. He is the only reason we could have the love we do. As for our nation, we need to do what you are saying. But, I believe God has allowed all this total insanity we see today as a warning our world is coming to a close. You know, those of us that still live the “old way” canning, have chickens for eggs and food, etc, made it through the “lock down “ just fine. We were able to keep all of our neighbors in fresh eggs. Which were we live were in short supply. The canning I had done last summer made sure we had plenty of food every day. ( thank you to my grandma for teaching me how to do that) As for the Bible.. my grandpa said that if you read it two ways there was nothing you could not figure out and over come. First, you read it as the word of God. Then read it as a history book, then you will know where you come from, where you need to go and what mistakes not to make on your way. Great video
I almost cried listening to this. Feeling like I don’t fit in because I still hold on to old traditions, customs and behaviors. Even within my family. It’s getting pretty lonely. It was my father who passed down these things to me and his parents to him. I truly appreciate how I was raised and nurtured.

I'm 44 years old, a truck driver and I have a lot of time to think and I often think about how my grandparents grew up and what they had to deal with. Even after all of the hardships they went through my grandmother, part caddo Indian, always said to be kind to others, love your family and always remember that no matter what no one can take your spirit away. They may take your money, your possessions or even your life but who you are is permanent and will live forever.
For 35 years I wore a badge and a gun. You are spot on. Now I carry a stethoscope and trauma shears as a paramedic. I don’t save lives, but I can reduce suffering, many times just by caring not by medicine. Usually at least once a week I have boots and a hat on and ride one of my horses. Everyday I care for them. My hope is that I am called a cowboy. Thanks for this video.
I'm a 22 year old and have always felt connected with older people and the older ways one of my mentors was an older gentleman who taught me how to trap and skin used to go to mountain man rendezvous since I was a young boy I wanted to get married and have a good family and since I have and have 2 beautiful young girls and will be raising them the old ways my mother always said I had an old soul and she wasn't wton

@@ryancason1058 Time needed to bring a horse to where it needs to be cannot be measured in hours per day. If it’s time spent correctly, 4 days of 30 minutes each can sometimes be more productive that one 2 hour session. The time is most often measured in weeks and months, instead of days and hours. It is a commitment of patience and perseverance and constant learning and growth, for however long it takes.
As a young man of only 22, I find it hard to carry on the old ways, though I try my best. Something as simple as giving a lady my chair is not normal in today's society, I I have to constantly remind myself how to act around women, instead of just going along with societal normalities. Every day I check RUclips, and I'm excited when you put another video out, because you are full of knowledge I would like to have. In proverbs it says knowledge is the principle thing, get wisdom, get understanding. Thanks for being open with us and sharing that wisdom. Too many people get caught up in the latest fads and follies of modern society, and learn nothing to better themselves.

Sir I come across your channel a few days ago and subscribed because of the quality and wholesome morals. I'm in my late 50s & I raised my only child by myself and enjoyed every moment with my son John. Well a couple years back 12/25/20 I received a phone call from the authorities that my son had been found dead due to a overdose, needless to say I've been a broken man trying to figure out what now? I've learned to turn it over to God and get back to the basics, not like I was far from it anyway growing up in the mountains on a farm. There's a couple things I really enjoy about you is being grounded, your faith and honesty to say the least. Just know you are touching lives in this cold world and I appreciate you. My dad and I sat for hours and talked about this kind of stuff, 20 years ago and it's worse now then what it was back then... When you talked about the right heart someone that is or isn’t Christian, cowboy, or cop…. I agree 110%. The man who I called my grandpa Tom Randall from Pegosa Sorinngs, Co told me I was a cowboy. I’ve tried my hardest to be the best at everything I do and I started a dream about a year ago trying to become a cowboy and before he died he said I was a cowboy and I went home that night a cried. That man taught me how to be a man how to work cows. I just found your channel and I love it! I’m 22 and I want to be the best cowboy I can only thing is…. It’s hard to find a ranch anymore that needs hands😂 the way you talk really sounds like Tom Randall talking to me and my best friends(his actual grandsons)

However having met some Texans in my time and looking at the values they represented we MUST preserve the traditions your speaking of. Because after the worlds gone to hell there needs to be a seed to regrow it from. We have our own version of that struggle here in the UK. Your millions strong. I identify more with my parent's generation and just a touch earlier. I do everything I can to hold on to the old ways and relearn what most people don't even remember.
Dewayne, I just found your channel, and man your talking the talk I've heard all my life from heroes that never knew they were heroes. It's good to hear a man who talks to all other men and women out here who really have no guidance from their fathers, uncles, older brothers or their bosses. I rode a horse once in my life, and admire those who do. I've grown up working hard and long hours, never knowing an 8 hour day. The world I grew up in was one with cotton mill workers, factory workers, firemen, truck drivers of which I have been for 44 years now. God has blessed me with the mindset to get up and be the man that they don't want to retire. God bless and keep you and yours!
No truer words spoken. They say history repeats it's self and I have come to believe that. When I was a young buck (I'm now 65) 10 feet tall and bullet proof my grandfather was always giving me advice some of witch I would shrug off as an old man preaching but as I grew older it started to resonate. I think the the advice he gave me that followed me all thru my life and benefited me most was " If your going to do something do it right or don't do it at all, keep God in your heart and treat others as you want to be treated". My son is 35 years old, I tried to pass on my grandfathers advice some times thinking I was talking to a rock but as time went on I realized that he was listening and I see it more each day. Thank you for putting the message out there. The young ones might not appreciate it now but in time I'm sure most will realize and understand the wisdom in your words. Thank you.

Good commentary Dewayne! I share the same thoughts about our country, it’s future and the rising tide of evil our children and grandchildren are facing even now. It won’t last forever, it’s days have already been measured and counted, and the judgements of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. Our instructions are to stand firm and persevere to the end. Tough times create tough men, tough men create easy times, easy times produce soft men, soft men create tough times… If we do our part, and by God’s grace our children and grandchildren should be even better than us, their times will demand it…;). There is so much to passing down wisdom and knowledge orally. I do this a lot with my grandkids. On national holidays we get together as a family and I will narrate some history or family legends. Depending on the holiday I will go into Paul Revere's ride, The battles at Concord and Lexington, The Star Spangled Banner. They love it. The older kids have heard these tales a bunch of times. But they look forward to them every year. Just a couple of weeks ago I got such a great surprise. Actually made me, their grandpa, shed a tear or two. Isa, my oldest grandson, asked if he could regale the family with George Washington's crossing of the Delaware. What I had believed to be just a somewhat silly recitation of a historic event proved to be a legacy.
There is a great quote in Elmer Kelton's The Time it Never Rained. "Each of these men had had his own time-the Indian, the mustang hunter, the pioneer rancher-and each had passed from the scene". For those that have read Elmer Kelton you would know the changing times are a common theme in his books The Smiling Country, The Time it Never Rained, and The Man Who Rode Midnight. I find that line comforting, as a 21 year old man coming up in these changing times. I can't be Hewy Calloway or Charlie Flagg or Wes Hendrix, their time has come and gone, but I can be me. I can be shaped by men such as these, just as they were shaped by the men before them. (Thank you for the great video it helped me come to this realization)
My favorite video so far Dwayne.I am 10 yrs older than you and was lucky enough to have Norwegian immigrant grandparents whom took me in from an abusive home in CA at 15 yrs old in 1972. Different life, you had to work. They were in there early 70's, still working, They and many others in this small farm town in North Dakota put values into me that saved my very life. I am MOST fortunate to have had that. Listen to your elders that have that good old fashion wisdom that was bestowed on themselves.
I just looked up 'Coyotes' by Don Edwards, which I'd never heard before, and it's a beautiful song. I grew up in London to Irish parents in a substantial community of Irish immigrants (which itself is no more), where many of the older generation enjoyed country & western music. But of course they all listened to Irish folk music as well, and 'Coyotes' reminds me of a song called 'The Rare Old Times', of which many singers had their own renditions. It too speaks of times changing, and warm tradition being replaced with cold modernity. It may not be to everyone's taste, but I recommend giving it a listen, and the Paddy Reilly version in particular. This video also reminds me of one of my favourite quotes: "Tradition is a set of solutions for which we have forgotten the problems. Throw away the solution and you get the problem back." - Donald Kingsbury, author. That being said, thanks again for another inspiring video, Dewayne. What do you consider alot of time cause I get home at 7 I could probably do a hour or 2 every afternoon
@@ryancason1058 Time needed to bring a horse to where it needs to be cannot be measured in hours per day. If it’s time spent correctly, 4 days of 30 minutes each can sometimes be more productive that one 2 hour session. The time is most often measured in weeks and months, instead of days and hours. It is a commitment of patience and perseverance and constant learning and growth, for however long it takes.

As a young man of only 22, I find it hard to carry on the old ways, though I try my best. Something as simple as giving a lady my chair is not normal in today's society, I I have to constantly remind myself how to act around women, instead of just going along with societal normalities. Every day I check RUclips, and I'm excited when you put another video out, because you are full of knowledge I would like to have. In proverbs it says knowledge is the principle thing, get wisdom, get understanding. Thanks for being open with us and sharing that wisdom. Too many people get caught up in the latest fads and follies of modern society, and learn nothing to better themselves.
Hello, don't give up wanting to give a lady your chair. You are admirable. Do it. There will surely be someone who notices and learns from your example. I taught my son (when he was in kindergarden) to always walk on the car side of the street if he was with a girl. I like gentlemen. I am only 23 but I will be passing the old ways to my daughter and all of my future children. It’s how I was raised and it’s the way a lot of kids need these days.

Sir I come across your channel a few days ago and subscribed because of the quality and wholesome morals. I'm in my late 50s & I raised my only child by myself and enjoyed every moment with my son John. Well a couple years back 12/25/20 I received a phone call from the authorities that my son had been found dead due to a overdose, needless to say I've been a broken man trying to figure out what now? I've learned to turn it over to God and get back to the basics, not like I was far from it anyway growing up in the mountains on a farm. There's a couple things I really enjoy about you is being grounded, your faith and honesty to say the least. Just know you are touching lives in this cold world and I appreciate you. I thank God that there are still people out there with great common sense, and you are one of them. I love watching your videos and I don't get to watch nearly all of em, not that I don't want to. My dad and I sat for hours and talked about this kind of stuff, 20 years ago and it's worse now then what it was back then... When you talked about the right heart someone that is or isn’t Christian, cowboy, or cop…. I agree 110%. The man who I called my grandpa Tom Randall from Pegosa Sorinngs, Co told me I was a cowboy. I’ve tried my hardest to be the best at everything I do and I started a dream about a year ago trying to become a cowboy and before he died he said I was a cowboy and I went home that night a cried. That man taught me how to be a man how to work cows. I just found your channel and I love it! I’m 22 and I want to be the best cowboy I can only thing is…. It’s hard to find a ranch anymore that needs hands😂 the way you talk really sounds like Tom Randall talking to me and my best friends(his actual grandsons)

However having met some Texans in my time and looking at the values they represented we MUST preserve the traditions your speaking of. I'm a 55yr old, small Kansas farming community born and raised, central az living "coyote". out of step with almost everything these days have to offer. I identify more with my parent's generation and just a touch earlier. I do everything I can to hold on to the old ways and relearn what most people don't even remember.

Dewayne, I just found your channel, and man your talking the talk I've heard all my life from heroes that never knew they were heroes. It's good to hear a man who talks to all other men and women out here who really have no guidance from their fathers, uncles, older brothers or their bosses. I rode a horse once in my life, and admire those who do. I've grown up working hard and long hours, never knowing an 8 hour day. The world I grew up in was one with cotton mill workers, factory workers, firemen, truck drivers of which I have been for 44 years now. God has blessed me with the mindset to get up and be the man that they don't want to retire. God bless and keep you and yours!
No truer words spoken. They say history repeats it's self and I have come to believe that. When I was a young buck (I'm now 65) 10 feet tall and bullet proof my grandfather was always giving me advice some of witch I would shrug off as an old man preaching but as I grew older it started to resonate. I think the the advice he gave me that followed me all thru my life and benefited me most was " If your going to do something do it right or don't do it at all, keep God in your heart and treat others as you want to be treated". My son is 35 years old, I tried to pass on my grandfathers advice some times thinking I was talking to a rock but as time went on I realized that he was listening and I see it more each day. Thank you for putting the message out there. The young ones might not appreciate it now but in time I'm sure most will realize and understand the wisdom in your words. Thank you.

Good commentary Dewayne! I share the same thoughts about our country, it’s future and the rising tide of evil our children and grandchildren are facing even now. It won’t last forever, it’s days have already been measured and counted, and the judgements of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. Our instructions are to stand firm and persevere to the end. Tough times create tough men, tough men create easy times, easy times produce soft men, soft men create tough times… If we do our part, and by God’s grace our children and grandchildren should be even better than us, their times will demand it…;). There is so much to passing down wisdom and knowledge orally. I do this a lot with my grandkids. On national holidays we get together as a family and I will narrate some history or family legends. Depending on the holiday I will go into Paul Revere's ride, The battles at Concord and Lexington, The Star Spangled Banner. They love it. The older kids have heard these tales a bunch of times. But they look forward to them every year. Just a couple of weeks ago I got such a great surprise. Actually made me, their grandpa, shed a tear or two. Isa, my oldest grandson, asked if he could regale the family with George Washington's crossing of the Delaware. What I had believed to be just a somewhat silly recitation of a historic event proved to be a legacy.
There is a great quote in Elmer Kelton's The Time it Never Rained. "Each of these men had had his own time-the Indian, the mustang hunter, the pioneer rancher-and each had passed from the scene". For those that have read Elmer Kelton you would know the changing times are a common theme in his books The Smiling Country, The Time it Never Rained, and The Man Who Rode Midnight. I find that line comforting, as a 21 year old man coming up in these changing times. I can't be Hewy Calloway or Charlie Flagg or Wes Hendrix, their time has come and gone, but I can be me. I can be shaped by men such as these, just as they were shaped by the men before them. (Thank you for the great video it helped me come to this realization)

My favorite video so far Dwayne.I am 10 yrs older than you and was lucky enough to have Norwegian immigrant grandparents whom took me in from an abusive home in CA at 15 yrs old in 1972. Different life, you had to work. They were in there early 70's, still working, They and many others in this small farm town in North Dakota put values into me that saved my very life. I am MOST fortunate to have had that. Listen to your elders that have that good old fashion wisdom that was bestowed on themselves.

I just looked up 'Coyotes' by Don Edwards, which I'd never heard before, and it's a beautiful song. I grew up in London to Irish parents in a substantial community of Irish immigrants (which itself is no more), where many of the older generation enjoyed country & western music. But of course they all listened to Irish folk music as well, and 'Coyotes' reminds me of a song called 'The Rare Old Times', of which many singers had their own renditions. It too speaks of times changing, and warm tradition being replaced with cold modernity. It may not be to everyone's taste, but I recommend giving it a listen, and the Paddy Reilly version in particular.
This video also reminds me of one of my favourite quotes:
