Very good comment. Congrats 😂
exept you dont see the thing coming out of it, its gonna be 2 seconds to come closer then BOOM!
Just a reminder that the GAU-12 is 25mm not 20mm like the M-61 Vulcan in most fighters. The rounds are more than twice as heavy. 181 rounds out of this is equal to nearly 400 rounds from the M61 in terms of mass. That little burst just moved 90 lbs of angry downrange at mach 3.

You know that snail meme that will one day catch up to you and kill you no matter what you do? Thats basically how we attempt to delay the inevitable. Metal doesnt exist in nature how we think it looks. Every single piece of manufactured metal is similar to a piece of processed deli ham. No matter how many oils, paint, coatings, formulas, blended metals, heat treatment etc, absolutely nothing will prevent it from eventually decaying at the atomic level. The F-35 is equipped with a 25 MM gun; I believe that is an improvement over the 20 MM that is on the F-22.
Larry-three
The F-22 cannon (M61A2 Vulcan) is a six-barrel, Gatling-style rotary cannon which fires 20 mm rounds at typically 6,000 rounds per minute. Muzzle Velocity is: 3,450 feet per second. It holds 480 rounds of ammunition.
The F-35 cannon (GAU-22/A) is a four-barrel, 25 mm Gatling-type rotary cannon version of the GAU-12/U. The GAU 22/A has a rate of fire of 3,300 rounds per minute. Muzzle velocity: with TP, HEI ammunition: 3,560 feet (1,085m) per second; with API ammunition: 3,400 feet (1,036m) per second. The F-35A holds 182 rounds of ammunition. The F 35B/C hold 220 rounds of ammunition in their external gun pods.
Larry-three while the bullet itself is more lethal the f-22 carries more ammo. almost 500 rounds.
think of it like a m1 garand vs an m4 or m16 of today. the garand will shoots a bigger bullet and packs more punch, but the m16 can carry more ammo.
This is like quality over quantity.
+Larry-three “Larry-3” No, just different guns for different advantages. The F-22 fires rounds about twice as fast. So although the round is slightly smaller, it puts out more firepower over-all.
F-35 is kind of replacement of A-10 so it can do gun run,

Why? Because you prefer Maverick type dogfights like in the movies? I'd be shocked if this gun is ever fired at an enemy, even over 100 wars. Conical bullets were invented in the 19th century.
(3rd time I write this message because of f**ing google+) 99 percent of the time missile will be your weapon of choice of course, but on the F4 phantom they decided not to put a gun. They later realised it was a mistake, that the dogfight era was not totally over and that in a dogfight a gun is very useful if the enemy gets too close. But yes 99% of the time the enemy will be engaged with missiles.
That little door is fighting fo its life xD
How did they ever engineer a gun barrel that doesn't get hot enough to melt? Like the ATK Chain Gun, which fires much more slowly.
🇨🇦💂Answer to your question: 1)they use multiple rotating barrels spun by an electric motor (General Electric), 2)the wind/air movement (from flying at any speed) air cools the barrels, 3) special heavy machine gun steel & electroplated inner linings are utilized in the construction of the barrels.

The little door of surprises
As an engineer, I can say, hmmm - I’m an engineer and smart stuff comes out of my mouth.
Tell me more!
Some other stuff goes into your mouth too
At around 0:37 is an interesting rear view, I had always imagined the gun being more inboard towards the centerline, but it is fairly far out there.
The recoil force from the gun must drive some serious adverse yaw that the control systems must compensate for to stay on target!
compared to the stabilizing force of air moving over the control surfaces at 400 knots and the 40,000 pounds of thrust coming out the back it probably doesn't really affect much. There's also basically no time the gun would be fired for more than a second under practical conditions.
@@pxatm Last I checked 8000 was 1/5 of 40000, so recoil is not a trivial fraction (guesstimating recoil, the warthog has 10K recoil!)... and I doubt they fire the guns with the burner on so we are really looking at ~18K thrust max; recoil is a significant relative force. Especially considering the gun is not on the centerline, I would be very surprised if there was no active compensation... remember, these things need to hit something humvee sized from potentially thousands of feet in the air and miles away. So I asked my friend Google, and he agrees with me 😛.
@@hotliner2872 I'm not sure where you got that.
The GAU-22 has a recoil impulse of 58.88 pound force seconds for every shot fired, because it's accelerating a 270 gram projectile to 970 m/s.
The F-35 in flight has a momentum of 1180000 pound force seconds because it's a 50,000 pound aircraft moving at 450 knots. Even without the engine, and without any consideration of gravity, an F-35 gliding at cruising speed will barely notice a change firing the entire 25mm complement. Add the engine and acceleration of gravity fighting the gun and we get even less.
The A-10 is special because it's bad. The engines produce very little thrust and it's most comfortable at speeds between 150 and 300 knots, so it doesn't have very much kinetic energy compared to the recoil impulse of the gun.
it lasted as long as i did in bed.
peek-a-boo gun. Surprise!
Did anyone notice the second door open below the gun door? Maybe a cooling air inlet for the gun barrels...
Probably not, the gun gets cooled from the main door (when you’re moving there’s enough air for that. It’s why WW2 planes just stick the gun barrels out of the wings)

Ching-Chen Huang Maybe for the shells to come out or to cool the gun ? I'm not too sure
Ching-Chen Huang Maybe the gun camera? Would be kind of odd though that it's not in the cockpit like say on the A-10. It just adds more drag when it opens like that.
+P51VoxelTanker The amount of drag it would add is so small. My assumption is that it's real purpose it to help trail smoke/away from the plane, to keep any residue from interfering with the stealth coating.
There is probably third a opening somewhere behind the gun to let air flow out, since the forward pointing opening must be an inlet.
Tim Port It's possible. I just thought of drag that would be like 1MPH, maybe not even then.
Probably ram air cooling inlet for the gun

probably ram air cooling the gun.. so yeah. ventilation
@@mikkel4606 not cooling, its to purge the gun bay of gases
Its for stealth, just like on the F-22
the biggest danger with rapid fire canon mounted in aircraft is a build up of explosive gases that can seriously damage the airframe
It's for stealth once the door opens the F35 will have a larger radar cross section. Basically the enemy can see it. Once the door closes the radar signature will stop making the F35 very difficult to detect. It's the same with the missile door's. Open, fire, close, change flight path.
I really wished to know the clearance between the shooted rounds and the fuselage... Its not a lot :)

sferrin2 metal flexs well . but metal also suffers from harmonics which cases fatigue. the flap door looks more like harmonics to me .
OXYOXYOXY444 There is not much that could practically be done about that issue. A 25 mm round going off in a small space like that creates a lot of pressure. Being a stealth aircraft they can not have larger or vented openings anywhere.

+Toby Licious BVR combat seems to be getting more advanced, and before we know it, we could see aircraft borne laser weaponry. Though its cool seeing the F-35 get a gun via the GAU-22
Alexander Hoyt And there was something on History Channel (I know) about directed EMP weapons. The power to fry all the iPhones in a building from the sky.
Dang thing didn't even need a gun. We have weapons so accurate they can hit a window. Other than the A-10, statistically gun strafes have done almost no damage to enemy forces.
+THM SGR That was just the F-4, and it got more kills with sparrows and AIM-9s than guns, by far.
+THM SGR F-15 called and wants you to know it killed most of its enemies with missiles.
***** In which case, if the F-35 is out of missiles and friends, it will very likely get killed. The gun will likely only ever strafe sand people. It's nice to have, but if you replace it with more fuel, it's not gonna be a problem.
The F-16 and F-15 both had 500 rounds of ammunition and you guys send this thing out there with 180? Somebody really needs to teach you your developers how to count
It even shoots in stealth wow
