    The wood turned out to be very nice for this project. Your scratch awl is so beautiful that I would be afraid to use it, for fear that I might damage it. I can see you using it with pride though. Very nice job. I'm going to watch this video over and over again, just like the others you have uploaded.

      RoxyIB The point of making a nice, nay, very nice, looking tool handle for your tool, is to admire it while it is on the shelve, waiting to fulfill it's destiny in the work place. There it will be watched with love, be wiped for dust each day, and live proud. Up until the first time it drops, get dented or the finish is ruined. Only then do you start to really put it to it's paces, it's a tool, it will fall, they all do, it's cast in to their design, or else we will never need new tools! OK, enough nonsense :) It's nice to make it, it's even better to just use it and enjoy it even when it's all scuffed up, it will never stop being the tool I made for myself. ;)

    Lovely project Yuval.
    I think yew is probably my all- time favourite wood as its colours can be glorious and it takes a great finish.
    Looking forward to your next upload.
    Best wishes,
    Alan.

      Alan Simpson This was as much for me to get to know how the wood feels, and the Awl was there waiting to help me with the perfect reason to capture it on video, win/win/win! Also it's a kind of closing a circle, that being the competition video was my very first wood turning video (the rest were family videos and me building a BBQ in my back yard...) and the response to it which made me start filming my work in the shop, that way who ever watches actually learn with me. it's how I learned, so it must be working :)
      Thank you again Alan!!

      MARK Baid Thanks Mark! the videos get better, yet the chore to edit them right doesn't go a way, I think it's time I'll start training the kids how to edit, along side with cleaning my shop (in my wet dreams....).

    Great project Yuval, you certainly did a lovely job with the handle. Isn't Yew a beautiful wood to work with, and it takes a stunning finish. I would tend to mount that scratch awl on a plaque.......and NEVER use it, for fear of marking it...lol.
    Take care
    Mike

      I was thinking the same thing Mike, but, a tool is a tool is a tool, and this tool needs to be used, I'll use a feather touch untill the first time it drops, then it's fair play for all :)

    First of all Congratulations on being a winner and receiving such a fine kit. Now what you did with the it is the icing on the cake, WOW What a beautiful shape and super finish. Well done and very professional. I was wondering why the hole all the way trough but after seeing the kit it became very clear.
    Thanks for sharing.
    On another note the list we spoke of, I might not be a fan of it being there but less of one with my name being included,
    Take care

      Al Furtado Thanks Al! I also like very much the finish on this one, the Yaw sure took well to it. Now I'll use it in my shop and it will fade a way, but I'll always have this video to remind me of how it was when brand spanking new :)

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  8 лет назад +1

      Well, since I've made it, it fell countless time, it's quite bent now, but it's still one of my most used tool, I use it from cleaning stuff out of crevices in the wood, to scratching my ear while using glue. And it still looks fantastic!!

    Hi Yuval! That's a very great looking handle, it is almost a shame to use the awl! Just kidding! I love how it turned out (sorry about the pun :) ) and I bet you are going to feel a lot of satisfaction every time you use it! The wood you used (yew? I believe you said) is really beautiful, I like the fact that it is light colored outside and darker in the heart! Thank you for sharing my friend! Cheers! Daniel

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  9 лет назад

      Daniel Vilarino Thank you Daniel!! it is a shame, but you know me, I have no shame, I'll use it like a cheap Chinese tool!! ;)
      It is Yaw, or Yew? now I'm not sure how it is spelled, thanks to you.... it is very lovely, it has the most amazing burned orange color to it, now I'm just looking for excuses to use it on different things, but it has to be something that will show up the heart wood as well as the sap wood.
      Thanks again my friend!

    • @DanielVilarino
      @DanielVilarino 9 лет назад +1

      Yuval Lahav Hi Yuval! I think it is Yew, but, maybe they call it Yaw as well, it is a tree of the genus Taxus and there are various variaties, probably the one you got is what it is commonly known as European Yew, here you can find Mexican Yew, but I never really used. Have seen several turned do it though and the results are normally spectacular! Regarding the treatment, I can tell you that there are people who treat very well their cheap Chinese tools LOL! (although my Grizzly is distributed by an American company it is made in China, and my wife sometimes is jealous of it (I was careful and did not say she :) or I might get in trouble). Cheers! Daniel

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  9 лет назад +1

      Daniel Vilarino It's OK Daniel, my lathe is Chinese, and the first set of tool I ever bought (a pack of 8 tools for 20 Euros) are Chinese, and I still use most of them, mostly the scrapers, as long as you sharpen them, they are working tool (can't say good tools, but working is fine, I guess...), so I have all my respect for the people and production lines which allows us all to enjoy a hobby we love so much! :)
