  • Ordered a cheap GP Pinpointer to see if it would compare to the Garrett Pro Pointer AT
    Not so much
Sensitivity was no where near as good
Otherwise it didn't do too bad

That’s what I like about the GP, it beeps when you right on top of the target that way you know exactly where it is. Other than the Garrert where it beeps 2 inches away and don’t know exactly where it is.

Yes I just bought a GP pointer from Amazon for just over £13 pounds and it works a lot better than the one in the video, also you can desensitize it by turning it off and back on while it is close to the object and at full signal, this is explained in the user manual.

I am using the GP Pointer at the moment (I will be upgrading this year) Mine performs way way better than is being shown here. I got the GP because it was cheap and yes I know you get what you pay for. But this was my first season detecting and already spent over budget. My GP Pointer has served me well and is still going strong, I have no doubt it aint as good as many others on the market but is better than grabbing fists full of dirt. I think compared to this mine would have found the pellet with ease at that depth and would have picked up the coin at around an inch and half.... Maybe I got the good one???? but reviews I viewed before getting mine were good...not great but good. Not sure this is a true reflection based on what I am finding with mine.

I have not been able to afford the Garrett since I am new at this hobby and bought a few of these cheaper pinpointers. I found mine all under $15 on Amazon ($12.99 and $13.99) and another brand for only $4.29! I just did a video showing how one GP Pointer was way more sensitive and louder than another. I have a feeling some of them are better than others and it varies from pinpointer to pinpinter. He may have gotten a dud. It is weird how each one of these GP Pointers can be better than other ones of the same model. Here they are in action along with the $4.29 no name brand one: ruclips.net/video/7G0_uE2bMig/видео.html

I have the same experience as Jollyboy, my GP pointer would have picked up the pellet and would have buzzed at the coins from further away. I only paid £13 for it - and I've been using it hard for about 2 months now - still works great.

I know that this is an older video, but my comment may help someone that gets an older GP pointer model (like the one tested in the video). Use a bright flashlight to light up the tip of the GP. Put the light right against the plastic. See if the sensing coil is all the way at the end (there will be an obvious shadow if it's not). If it's not at the very end, look on RUclips to see how to fix it.

I just got mine in and it works about like the Garrett. Locates large and small coins at about 3". It picked up a 22 cal pellet at about 1". On a budget, this is a great way to go. I would suppose on budget items, the chance for duds are greater but if you luck into a good one you come out ahead. As a LEO, I unfortunately have to take the risk a little more than I'd like.

The GP Pointer CAN NOT be submerged in water. If you are a beach hunter this will be an issue for you. If you are a dry land relic hunter it would be a decent pointer

  • @swiss_army_nigel
    @swiss_army_nigel 6 лет назад +2

I picked up a GP pointer from Amazon, mine picks up small coins from about 2 inches with no problem, certainly an issue with yours - maybe if the packaging for yours was a bit crushed the pointer got damaged as well. I can get near 2 inches off the side as well. Got it on a next day delivery in the UK, guess they keep stock of them over here - about 30 UKP cost. Happy with mine.

I did gag out the full $130 or so for the garret and almost ordered a gp and did not because I have the money at the time and nothing is worse than buying a cheap imitation with varying poor manufacturing using bizarre not trustable components and feeling sick about it for years. Mine works fine and is fully waterproof with good reputable guarantees from a known company with strict quality controls since those in the normal world compared to china demand better quality. However you are paying three times as much. Notice that in the comments people are saying "you must have got a lemon"--the point being that you get the pin pointer and have no idea on the spectrum--how well it works or does not. To me I wanted to pay AND BE DONE WITH IT. I most certainly do order obscure things from china so I am not a believer "buy american and pay anything they demand if you want to be a good american"

I've been using the GP pointer for about a year. I must say it's an excellent pinpointer I cannot justify spending all that money on a Garrett pinpointer. One thing that you did not mention in your video and until you actually use the GP pointer in the field for sometime you would not have known this. The GP pointer will beat slower on iron and faster on non-ferrous metals it actually does discriminate between the two and that is a technology that I think is just now coming out in some of your new Minelab pinpointers.

I have a Garrett and another cheapo kind... I intentionally set my Garrett to not beep unless I am very close to the item.. I want it to pinpoint exactly where the item is in the dirt, not pick it up several inches away. That's what the metal detector is for.. It could be anywhere, being that far away. Just my preference...

    Just a thought here....
In a WORST CASE SCENARIO if the GP Pinpointer doesn't work too well you can always use it for spare parts for the Garrett. For example, recently I wore through the tip of my Garrett. Ideally, I would get a new case (housing) for it to replace the one that I have now with a tiny hole. Unfortunately, they don't sell cases alone. I need to work on repairs instead. So yeah, if the physical features of the GP are exactly as the Garrett, then you have a whole heap of potential spare parts - button, case, cap, holster, o-ring.......

...cheap is good...your $200 or $500 detector should tell you where the target is and how deep and is it a good dig or not...all coins get dirty if they are in the ground a while...so if a target is 4 inches down and you dig...you won't see it...my GP Pointer lets me know when I'm 3/4 to an inch away...this is how close I want to be to find it...it's either in the hole or the clump you just pulled...good hunting...!!!

The GP is great. But its also about the 9v battery. I use a Duracell for it! Then it will get the best results.

I believe you may have a lemon. I use a GP and it works much better than the example you used. I also only paid $22 for it with free shipping from a dealer here in the States.

On the Garrett, the tip is not the most sensitive part... its a half inch from the tip.

Haven't even watched the video yet but the gp pointer I bought wouldn't even detect a quarter if I touched it and the gp pointer instructions specifically says it's not waterproof.

I just ordered my Garrett Pin Pointer from Amazon for $120. I don't mind the cost for quality because I know I'll make my money back with all the coins and precious metals I'll find. Like you said, "you get what you pay for"! That generic GP is a joke.

He didn't address the batteries..... What batteries do the Garrett pointer use? How long on average do you get between new batteries before they are dead? I'm on the eve of purchasing my first detector ever...... I'm leaning towards the Garrett AT Pro, any thoughts from you folks? I'm in the Midwest so there will be NO beach detecting. Just soil/clay mixture. Any help? Anyone have problems damage of their machine's from shipping probs?

I have 2 of the gp pointers, just tried the dime, quarter, and .177 pellet tests..... Im getting 1 and 1/2 inches on the coins and they pick up the small pellet at about 1/2" Didnt do any "tuning" or anything, just how they work out of the box. Dont know if there is multiple factories in china producing these but got mine from ebay a couple weeks ago and they seem to perform closer to the carrot. Also mine seem to have a higher pitched tone. If they are produced in different factories then they might be set different or have different internals.

if you have a garrett pinpointer and try useing the gp you will not like it, you spend 139 bucks and the gp about 40 bucks, the gp only works good if your starting out or you never use a garrett, thats my thinking anyway,

i have bought 3 major brands .but for the money .I found the gp pointer from eBay to be as good as the others i was shocked at how good .it just works .I prefer a know brand but i am really impressed with this cheep imitation .9 OUT of ten no bull shit .its a little less sensative but it takes me strait to the target every time .9 months still on the same battery .oh the led is brighter than all the rest actually helps shine on a target in the hole .for 50 bucks its excellent .I bought another 2 .
