im a kid with aspergers and i play video games alot, my parent act like this alot. my mum teachers people with aspergers and today she showed me this. i really like this channel. so thank you
“You are creative, resourceful, and whole” FLOORED me… literally. I dropped to my knees, crying, thanking the Lord yet again that I am *seen*… not only by Him, but by the neurodivergent community.🥺 1. I excel at thinking outside of boxes, and love nearly every form of art (*except* rigid crafting kits 😂) 2. Being recognized as “resourceful” has always been one of theeee greatest compliments of my life. 3. I’ve only recently remembered my WORTH. I am not a flawed and broken piece of [poop], and I am not someone who is deeply lacking and needs to be “fixed.” ✊♥️ **I discovered Asperger Experts yesterday thanks to a FB recommendation, and I’m quite pleased I requested some info, as well as looking up AE here on RUclips. Thank you so, so much. 🙋🏻♀️
I had a horribly unqualified "aide" who thought me reading in class during times when I had no work was a problem. I was getting my work done and listening to the teacher, but when the teacher was late or I was done with a test I would read.
+Spotted Hyena That sucks. I used to read all the time in class. I was a good student so thankfully no teachers called me out on it. If I needed to focus I'd put the book down. If I didn't need to pay attention I'd read. Got flack from my family for reading at the dinner table and at restaurants, however.
Spotted Hyena Yeah I got that a lot. My parents didn't like it (mainly my mom) because she thought it was rude. "You should be listening to people and making conversation when at the table!" I kept telling her that if the conversation was interesting enough for me to interject I'd put the book down. Apparently that wasn't polite.
Hi Danny, I am enjoying your videos, just recently watched your webcast on Defense Mode and was able to encourage my son (25) to watch it - that night it was a bit scary because his mind was racing. The next day he got up and did so many things like cleaning his room and organizing himself without being asked he seems so much more calmer since watching this video. I look forward to more inspiration from you thank you
ASD or not, this is a good way to approach parenting in general. Pick your battles! My son refuses to sleep on the bed- he sleeps on the floor. As long as he's comfortable, that's fine. We put down a pad so his diaper won't leak on the carpet. Our task became moving him to a better spot on the floor (he was RIGHT in front of the door, blocking it, which is a hazard). He wants to sleep with a billion toy cars. Sure! Why not? My goals are self help skills, self regulation, communication. All the other stuff is whatever.
My mother spent around 12years trying to "fix" me. What she never understood though is that I was never "broken", I am just different. After I got diagnosed with Asperger's and started to get regular psychological counciling she kept it up for a short while longer, but through the counciling the therapist could get her to understand in 4 months what I tried to tell her for around 16 years. I am now studying Chemistry to become a Chemical engineer, and while I might not be "neurotypical", thanks to the support of therapists, experts and dedicated people informing others about Autism/Asperger's, I am now living a satisfactory live. Keep up the great work and greetings from Germany.⌬
Oh my goodness, thank you! I've dealt with this for so long I was doing it to myself, it's only in the last year or so I realized some of my 'problems,' aren't problems. Just got the official diagnosis today (though I've suspected for years), I'm delighted to see there' such an amazing group in my area. I can't wait until the next meetup!
Love this! This has been kind of how I'd been parenting all along and then we hit school and they want me to discipline the crud out of her because she won't sit still basically. She's been getting more and more stressed. I sit over here talking about my concerns over her stress, they go on and on on holding her accountable for her choices. I realized the other day I was letting their expectations drive us both mad.
My son loves the alphabet and Stims a lot before I would think it was a problem that it was stressing him . But I asked him one day how it was making him feel . And he said “ I’m just so excited mom “. Now I see it as his fun time or release from the stress that the world puts on his little shoulders . You are so right look at the big picture and stop worrying what everyone else thinks. Or how to look “ appropriate “ in public !!! Let’s all be inappropriate but happy x
I babysat for a parent whose son was diagnosed aspie; I ALWAYS saw stuff like this happening, and I didn’t even try to pretend like I cared. I was fired pretty fast and have since come to terms with my own aspergers. I think my own sensory processing differences has made it easy for me to connect and empathize with others with aspies, many who struggle even more than I do. (My communication is very neurotypical so it has been easy to miss in me. It explains so much about how people have high expectations that I usually fail to live up to.) ❤️Much love to kids who are in these situations... stay true to yourself.
This is really great. My son will finally be tested through the school for Aspergers (or what is now just ASD) next school year; he is 10. I focused so much on his social issues, only to realize that they were MY problem. I was projecting. He doesn't care and is not the least bit concerned about the fact that he doesn't have any solid friends. His classmates like him. That's enough for him. It isn't a problem, but I made it a problem. I will not be focusing on the things I have made a problem (that aren't actually a problem) anymore!
The main thing I've learned is the most important thing to do is engage with your child, structure their day so they are learning how to converse, how to be independent and how to work and manage a job. At age 10 and up they should be learning how to build work skills and life skills. They can mow a neighbor's lawn, walk dogs, etc. Useful vocational skills will build confidence and teaching them what to do in a variety of situations is key.
Awesome, I know there is a problem but can't identify it till I saw your channelI have these symptoms and my elder kid has the sameWhen we first visited a phycologist to check why he is so resistant and check how to deal with him I started to see some symptoms in meSometimes I felt I am alien and don't know why? I went into a lot of programs for checking your inner voice to go through your time line and be self aware, but to be honest, your channel best describe the symptoms I have Again thank you and I am happy to be member of this family
My mother and school staff tried to fix non-existent problems in the worst way possible... Basically physically & emotionally abusing me and trying to convince me that, not only did I have problems, I was a problem (for my reactions to abuse, autistic traits or just... apparently not talking to others enough means you're arrogant and need to be put down) (I think some a lot of them were people who just wanted to take out their frustration on/have power over someone else, saw an abused kid who wasn't very good socially which made me more vulnerable to abuse and less likely to get help, and decided I had been put on earth to be their punching-ball) As a result, I do have actual problems now :/ I wish there was more autistic acceptance in France and violence against children wasn't seen as some sort of educational option here.
I know what you mean.Growing up in Texas, USA traditional ways of thinking are extremely heavy here too. I have done so many things over the years that caused my family to think "WTF?" When we just have different perceptions of reality. If you ever need a talk, feel free to send me a message. Also I am very interested in bringing stuff like this into the light for people to see. I am writing a book about being autistic and would love to know as much about your experiences as possible. (asperger's was taken out of the DSM-V, because they are restructuring the different diagnosis). facebook.com/AutismGamesScience/
Hi, thanks for your reply. I will contact you (I just need to turn off the app that blocks FB for me later... I am using RUclips to pratice German by watching Löwenzahn, do that's not blocked)
Hi, does anyone else's child have difficulty sleeping at night ? Our son is 12 and takes hours to settle. Up and down all night, any little noise and he's up like a light. Any advise would be welcome!
Hello! My son is 11 and is an aspie. He is aware of his diagnosis but doesn't yet know all the details. To him it's just a name. Is this the right time to explain everything? I want to do it in a way that's best for him since he obsesses easily. Maybe you can make a video introducing Aspergers to young kids ...? :) Thank you. -Diana
If I was 11 again, I would have liked an explanation. I think facts delivered straight with a clear meathod for solutions to social issues would have done a lot for me. It took another 22 years to get diagnosed.
Yeah, he needs to know. In our house we used the word “wiring” from 3-8yrs old to solidify how no two brains are wired alike. He knew “Asperberger’s” but it was just a name because I told him no two kids on the spectrum are alike either and I didn’t want him to go by a label. It also helped explain other kids in class too who have their own set of strengths and challenges, even those deemed neurotypical. He seems to see everyone as unique and capable ESPECIALLY himself 😁. We’re just now talking actual brain mapping and the second infancy his brain is about to go through and how he can help re-wire things by continuing to challenge himself and continue with boxing. I don’t know if your guy has violent outbursts or not but we’ve had to introduce terms like rumble/rage/recovery. You could start by asking him if he has any questions about his diagnosis. Good luck!
Not combing your hair is actually a problem in girls because of the social demands of our current society. Even though I try to comb my hair & make a decent hairstyle for myself, a lot of times I end up having a hair dysfunction (mainly because it freezes even though I use hair products). Anyone got a tip about this???
SuperGeminisgirl I only comb my hair in the shower... there’s an awesome brand of conditioner called OGX, the kind I like is coconut milk since it has a mild scent. It makes my hair more slippery than other kinds of conditioner so it’s way less painful to comb than with other kinds. I hope this helps, hair is a pretty individual thing but it may be worth a try!
I would love to read anybody's stories, concerns, or anything else. I will happily accept a message from from both autistic people and neurotypical people. Help me grow this book I am working on. I am gathering experiences from both sides of the fence and along with the actual science behind ASD. Danny is absolutely correct of what he says and he is my inspiration to make my contribution to the ASD community. facebook.com/AutismGamesScience/
I appreciate this but usually parents aren't solving the problem of their child playing computer games 2 hrs per day, but 12 hours per day. Or a button down shirt every day but refuses to change clothes at all, even to wash them. I would share this video with my friend to introduce AE to her except I'm afraid when she hears this she'll think you don't get *her* so I'm gonna keep looking for a good video for her to see what you guys are all about. ❤️

Danny, you ROCK. THANK YOU for doing what you are doing. You GO, boy.
Just. THANK YOU.
This might be one of the most important videos on RUclips not only regarding Asperger's.

LOL I read at restaurants too, and in the school dining hall! People see me sitting alone reading and think I'm depressed, though!
Spotted Hyena Yeah I got that a lot. My parents didn't like it (mainly my mom) because she thought it was rude. "You should be listening to people and making conversation when at the table!" Thanks for the reminder to keep things in perspective. I am addicted to problem solving and that creates its own problems.
Omg yes. I want to like this 1000 times

Thanks so much for this channel Danny, you've done a great deal to make things easier not just for Sandra and I, but most importantly for Lucas (8).
Thank You! I’m so happy that somebody else feels this way!

I was 60 when I was told I had Aspergers. Now 62 female.
Excellent advice and words of wisdom.......video games and not combing hair !
danny, you're awesome. I have a TOTALLY defiant 6 year old Aspie. at a loss, but I'm learning (as I'm an Aspie myself)
As a parent of an 18 year old , so far from what I've heard, I'm on point. My son agrees !
Hit the nail on the head. Thank you!

Hi, does anyone else's child have difficulty sleeping at night ? Our son is 12 and takes hours to settle. Up and down all night, any little noise and he's up like a light. Any advise would be welcome!
Have you tried one of those lightly weighted sheets? Apparently the light pressure they apply can be very soothing to people with aspergers / autism
As someone who is in their fifties, I can say this is never going to change. I still wake up every to to three hours a night.
Love this, your videos are great!
Bless you friend.
