“There’s a Libertines song called ‘Anthem for Doomed Youth’, about how ‘they wish you luck and hand you a gun’. We took the title from the famous Wilfred Owen war poem that I read as a kid. Dad would talk to me about the First World War quite a lot, saying how a generation of young men were killed for half a mile of mud. He had this epic, tragic, overwhelming sense of the futility of it all but was somehow attached to this romantic idea that there will always be in some foreign field a little piece of earth called England” - Pete Doherty
Lyrics: Here's a story about the rules of death and glory To be learned by heart by all children of men It's the hour of the morning on the day after the dawning When the sun they said would never set finally set again Was it Cromwell or Orwell who first led you to the stairwell Which leads only forever to kingdom come Rushed alone by guiding hands Whispers of the promised land They wished you luck and handed you a gun Life could be so handsome Life could be so gay We're going nowhere But nowhere, nowhere's on our way In the pub that night racking out the lines of shite Putting to right all of the world's great wrongs Yes we thought that they were brothers Then they half-murdered each other Then they did a karaoke turn and murdered our best song Told the governor's wife about the last night of his life She turned away in tears called you a liar Where are all the old dreams now? The batallion, once so proud Lost in some old song and hanging on the old barbedwire Life could be so handsome It's so good to be okay We're going nowhere But nowhere, nowhere's on our way Nowhere in the institutions Did they teach that revolution Was something that could ever come to pass Oh we tried one, once before Was the king's head on the floor And we got booted out the boozer 'Cause someone smashed the glass Life could be so handsome Life could be okay We're going nowhere But nowhere, nowhere's on our way Life could be so handsome It's all gonna be okay We're going nowhere 'Cause nowhere, nowhere's on our way Nowhere's on our way

“Oh we tried one, once before Was the king's head on the floor” There is an early libertines gig on youtube where they play in some place called King’s Head. I wonder if that’s a reference
The more I listen to this song the more I think it's one of The Libertines best ever. It's like a modern classic already. Simply beautiful and I adore Carl's voice. I love Pete's writing and musicianship but not his singing (except for on You're My Waterloo) so I'm glad he's not singing on this song. Carl though, he just gets better and better all the time. Still, I've never let Pete's singing put me off his great songs, I have all Babyshambles albums too. Carl is just in a different league for me though. Definitely my favourite performer. This song plus Dead For Love and Belly Of The Beast are my favourite songs on the album - at the moment, at least! My faves change all the time depending on my mood! So good to have this band back again. They're doing a gig here in Wales in January but typically I will be away at the time so can't see them! Talk about bad timing! Then again, I'll have to see if I can make another date on the tour. :)

Danny Of Philly The Strokes? I'm sorry but they cant hold the Libs jock straps. What are they doing these days? I was being sarcastic talking like a Brit. Youre probably a new Yorker that thinks your so cool because youre from new York and so are the Stroke me offs. Libertines; best band name ever. Strokes maybe the worst. Songs? Theres more classics on "Up the Bracket" then the Strokes will ever produce in their entire career. Youre probably a kid so i'll enlighten you I was around when both bands came out and were in their prime. You were probably in 3rd grade. Let me know when the Strokes write something even close to "Death on the Stairs" or "Cant Stand me Now" The strokes are not Americas hope every one of Jack white's bands including the ones before he was famous here in Detroit shit on the strokes. That's about 6 bands, shit the Hived are better. Get rid of your ipod and buy a few records or cds and find some good music.
I spent 2020 in my abusive parents house. My mother is a bipolar Narcissist and her former drug dealing boyfriend has threatened me with violence, police and name calling the entire time (and long before this year). This song spoke to me in so many ways. It got me through this year. Thank you, Carl, Pete, John and Gary... for this beautiful gift of music.
+omix090 i understand the cliche of it but thats not exactly what i said.. nonetheless i agree with what they did. i wouldn't have dropped $60 on a vinyl package.

+tim starkey completely agree, some people only like the idea of owning records and never play them even. my system is really humble but it sounds good enough for me
Superb! love the nods to the King, enjoyed it live as well. Also love Gunga Din, great rabble-rouser to kick-start the new era. Can't believe the 10 thumbs down...cloth-ears!
I disagree, I think this works great as a Carl song! However it was actually originally supposed to have both singing on it, but Carl recorded the vocals without telling Pete when he was asleep
+Tim Summers As much as I like Pete's songwriting I prefer Carl's vocals by a country mile. Pete's singing tends to sound incredibly out of tune/off key a lot of time whereas Carl has an excellent voice. I do like their harmonies though.
@@memondayz I love them too, neither have released an album that I dislike, besides freaks but I don’t count that as it was written to be intentionally bad

They did a great version of this song at Reading 2015 , pretty much classic song after classic song throughout the whole set!

A Greta track, it does have a "Pulp" feel to me in parts.
+Paul Walker Great track.....
agree 100 per cent
It really does sound like Pulp. Maybe a bit Pencil Skirt? Which is definitely a good thing
+Paul Walker It does, but a glorious ramshackle version of Jarvis
Good call, but it doesn't have that slightly creepy, slightly sleazy feel that Pulp songs did!
masterpiece!!
Just needed Pete on a chorus in my opinion. For some reason his voice just hits that heartbreak note
awesome song. good to see you again, boys.

te amo the libertines
Fuck this makes me nostalgic now how does time go by so fast
Good job lads!! Impressive , glad to hear you still got it! See u at leeds fest 💜
I think that if Paul McCartney, Noel and Liam Gallagher wrote a song it will sound like this. GENIOUS!!!
Lol

Harry Rag Noel defintely does.

sounds similar to music when lights go out, but still one of the best

Anthem for Doomed Youth
BY WILFRED OWEN
What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
- Only the monstrous anger of the guns.
Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle
Can patter out their hasty orisons.
No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells;
Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,-
The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells;
And bugles calling for them from sad shires.
What candles may be held to speed them all?
Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes
Shall shine the holy glimmers of goodbyes.
The pallor of girls' brows shall be their pall;
Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds,
And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.
+Oyzz Glad someone else knows where the title comes from.
Top demais,
wow!
What a tune
This sounds truly Libs!
💙
Letters from nowhere is a piece from William Morris, which is apparently in our way.
Would anyone let me know what "karaoke turn" is???
What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
The verses remind me a bit of Leonard Cohen's 'Stranger song' .
for some reason its not downloading on itunes
A tiny bit too cleanly produced but the lyrics are seriously genius. Listen to "Death or Glory" by the Clash and then come back to this one...
And it's not even the first time they've referenced that song.
Does anyone else get a slight Manics vibe from this? I feel it would fit in nicely on one of their later albums
I can hear it a little.
+Kevin Kibble I get more of a Sixpence None The Richer vibe.
Hope for the future - Paul McCartney
Why is this isn't available in Mexico??
See you Sunday
Lush as ever !!!!!
