Hello Dr Liz! I was wondering is Tamoxifen usually prescribed after or before Radiation Therapy? Im wondering if some patients are given Baby tams before radiation like me.
Wonderful video. I’ve been on Tamoxifen nearly 3 years and still feel that there is a lot I don’t understand. I’m so grateful that you are out there for us, providing the information and knowledge we desperately need. Thank you again so much for all you do.
I had breast cancer and finished radiation December 2023. I made the decision not to take Tamoxifen, i did not like what the side effects would do to me. I will take my chances and live my best life, if i get 5 to 7 years then we will deal what comes. Im 65 and the side effects scared me i didnt want to be sleeping my life away. While my poor husband wants to do the things with me. My husband is my rock and he loves me too the moon as i him. I am a very happy person i feel good and i look good. So life is great❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻
Tamoxifen makes me feel like I'm losing my mind. Severe anxiety, low mood, mood swings, irritability. I can't bear the thought of taking it for another year, let alone 10.
MPORTANT!! Check where your tamoxifen is manufactured. DO NOT TAKE it if it comes from India or China! It could have dangerous impuities that will cause more side effects and even death. I found CVS and Walgreens tend to get it from these 2 countries and there are warnings on the internet. I found that "Sun Pharmacy" sources theirs from Fl and New Jersey. Now I don't have side effects from the tamoxifen pills made in the US!!
Thank you for your videos. I had breast cancer last year and currently on tamoxifen.Suffering from many side effects. I do find certain brand's are kinder than others. I love your video's straight and to the point. I am a retired nurse with a family history of breast cancer and I have learnt so much in the past year. I also support breast cancer now, wished I had found your videos last year, just ordered one of your books. Hope you are feeling better from your recent surgery. Again many thanks.
I took tamoxifen over 20 years ago, and the v. dryness from having taken it, has really affected my life. I have tried things like Mona Lisa touch laser treatment, and the O shot, but neither worked. I was diagnosed at age 42, and was on Tamoxiphen for the 5 years, and wish I had not taken it. I also have hair loss. it was a tough decision to decide whether to take it or not.
I am also on tamoxifen and have side effects too.Been on it for 2 years and had to shop around to get a brand that suited me. I love Dr ORiordans videos too.
I have been on it for a year, and although I am thankful that it decreases the probability of recurrence, I don't understand why is there no other option than Tamoxifen when the patients have hormone-positive BRCA? Why don't scientists try to develop other medicines with fewer side effects? Very frequently we hear developments related to cancer drugs and treatments but not related to hormone-positive BRCA, why is it so? I wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy and healthy and joyful year.
Oh this was so helpful to me, thank you! I’m about to start Tam in the next couple of weeks once my radiotherapy is finished. Can’t thank you enough for the knowledge you have given me. The calm way you deliver it really makes me feel I can do this!! Thank you. 💗
Please Google Elyn Jacobs and tamoxifen before you start that. 🙏 Most women can't tolerate tamoxifen and it's a known carcinogen. She is a holistic health coach who had breast cancer herself. She has a wealth of information. I feel bad for women who are feared into making rash decisions because they're scared. The cancer world is good at laying the fear on thick. Do you're own research... please. Radiation and chemo do not kill cancer stem cells. These cells break away from the primary tumor and circulate in your blood. These are the soldiers that the cancer tumors recruite. I've learned a lot but not from conventional doctors. Best wishes to you.
Dear Liz, thank you for all this info. I am on Tamoxifen since many years but no one ever mentioned the serious side effects you did. From the beginnning of my cancer journey I am more and more away that I am the best healer of myself. I’ll look further into the side effects. Sending you warm greetings from Switzerland 🇨🇭

Thank you so much for creating and posting these educational videos related to breast cancer! After my breast cancer diagnosis, I’ve learned so much from you in recent months following you on social media. Planning to order your books as well soon.
I am 33 and had to quit (3 days ago) after two months of Tamoxifen. I was going INSANE, filled with rage, terrible anxiety that would not go away. I am terrified of recurrance now.

Thank you so much for this. I've been on tamoxifen for 7 months now and have managed to escape any side effects - however, I'm now struggling with the eyesight in one eye so am under investigation at UHS for optical nerve swelling, which according to the vast list of possible side effects is rare (but it would just be my luck!) Really appreciate all the info you provide - your book has been my constant companion all the way through my treatment and beyond, and I recommend it to anyone who receives a diagnosis.
@@melissafaulkner2827 I really want to quit, but my cancer was "Intermediate to high grade" (more likely to come back after surgery and be invasive) so I'm afraid to quit. Did your bone pain go away yet?
I’m on it for since 2021, I manage the bone pain with exercise. I walk every day. Also resistance exercise not at the gym but at the fitness parks around the beach.
Hi..I live in BC Canada so I'm not sure if some medical names are the same as where you live. I have stage 4 lobular carcinoma, diagnosed in May 2022. In November 2022 I was having breathing problems but the regular CT with contrast and bone scans didn't show anything going on. Finally, in February 2023, the oncologist sent me for a special scan of just my lungs. It showed a bunch of small blood clots in my right lung. Actually, before the breathing issues, my legs and feet were swelling up a lot for a few months. I had an ultrasound and a scan on my legs. No clots were seen. At the beginning of my diagnosis, I had 5 treatments of radiation and 9 treatments of paclitaxel and Letrozole once a day. When in the hospital for the blood clots the doctor took me off letrozole thinking that could be one of the causes of the clots. Now the doctor says I'm protected from blood clots since I'm taking a blood thinner every day and wants me to take tamoxifen. I haven't started taking it yet because I'm scared to. What is your opinion? Do you think it's safe to take once you've had a blood clot diagnosis. Thank you in advance for taking the time yo answer me.
Thanks for all your videos. All very informative. My question is,can tamoxifen cause weight gain,as i have put on loads since starting them in October. I have a healthy diet, cycle, walk and exercise. It's getting me down now.
Some women do gain weight as a consequence of the menopause changing your metabolism. I did and I was fit and active. Things that can help are eating more protein - 30-40g per meal and having less carbs with your evening meal, and adding in weight training as muscle burns more calories
@@DrLizORiordan thanks for the info and replying. Passed menopause 15 years ago and I felt then I was gaining weight. Certainly the Tamoxifen hasn't helped. Love your videos. Have helped me understand a few things that you're never told. Thanks.
Thank you so much for this eloquent, practical and helpful video. I had a low stage (1), low grade tubular cancer, but was put on tamoxifen for 10 years. Thank you for all your help and sending love, positive vibes and the best medical care for your latest diagnosis 🙏 xx
Tamoxifen caused an embolism with me, the blood thinner was horrendous. Caused severe spinning/blackiuts. They did a brain scan found a Meningioma, not the cause of the spinning, it was incidental finding. Stopped all drugs
I had double mastectomy two months ago. My period stopped and joint pain started even before Tamoxifen. I am hoping thst Tamoxifen will show positive side effetcs with me😅
I'm a cancer survivor and I was on this medication Anastrozole and my body was in severe pain I would cry no one could touch me I was in that much pain all the time and had to be taken off of it but then they wanted me to take tamoxifen and I refused to take it it causes caderacks I don't want them either.
Thank you for this video. I am on Tam 20mg and am post menopausal. I had a severe bout of GERD after Arimidex. I have had a lot of side effects including heart palpitations and hair loss. The most difficult one for me right now is abdominal bloating. How does Tam cause this, and is it fluid retention or inflammation/bacteria in the gut? TIA
I am 20 years old have fibroadenoma in both breast doctor prescribed me tamoxifen 10mg for 3 months . Does it cause autoimmune disease? I have already taken for 2 months.
My Mom took tamoxifen for 5 years and you wouldn't have known she had cancer...then they told her you can''t take it any more ,five years had passed..so they put her on a drug called megace...she started getting hot flashes and weak and her womb filled with blood and she ended up in the hospital..the bleeding stopped as soon as her womb emptied..but she went downhill from there so fast and they drugged her so much, we couldn't speak to her..I truly believe if they had left her alone on the tamoxifen she would have lived another 5 years or more.
Thank you! I'm on tamoxifen and will be tuning in to your next vlog with great interest - i hadn' teven considered taking my pill at night insteaed but that makes so much sense! A big thank you - Love you on IG as well.

I started it last week. Barely any side effects. A lot of women don't have any side effects or barely any, often they lessen in a few mos. My life is worth at least trying it. Couldn't imagine not even trying it . I'm no quitter.
Hi Liz, thanks for all the work you do to highlight breast cancer care. I’ve been on Tamoxifen for 5 years and can’t cope with the thought of another 5. Is it common that people weigh up the positive and negative benefits (impact to quality of life verses reactance) and are you able to speak into this? Thanks!
I am diagnosed with DCIS, the cluster is 5mm, and I had a lumpectomy to have removed it with all margins negative, and the closest margin of 14mm. But the Radiologist still insisted me of having the radio treatment 45GY for 3 weeks. Now the oncologist insisted me of taking Tomexifen for 5 years. But I was diagnosed with thickened uterus lining to 11.9 mm 3 years ago when I was going through the premanopause, along with some abnormal growth. Even though now my oncologist ordered another ultrasound and it shows my ovaries are unseen and the uterus is 2 mm, but I suspect myself being overtreated, because all of the radio treatment and the Tomexifen itself would also cause cancer. I don't want to take the medicine. What's your input please?
Why not temoxefen when DCIS grade 0? No lymph nodes removed. Why does the UK not give meds. I don’t want to take tamoxifen. Pls answer. Is DCIS CONSIDERED BREAST CANCER?
Could I ask, when you say tamoxifen can reduce likelihood of return of cancer by 50%, what do you mean by this figure? Is it for example that say 2 in 100 get a recurrence taking tamoxifen, and 4 in 100 get a recurrence without it (implying a 50% decrease) or do you mean that it will prevent 1 in 2 people getting a recurrence? Please note I am using theoretical numbers here.
Is it only warfarin or all "blood thinners"? Anastrozole gave me a blood clot in my heart so my onco changed to Tamoxifen. I questioned the decision because im Tamoxifen causes blood clots too. He said because im on Xarelto i should be fine.
I'm not sure I'm afraid as there are so many new blood thinners on the market and I don't prescribe them but your Dr wouldn't give you a tablet taht wans't safe
If it's not one thing, it's the other😢. 15 months on Tam and no side effects that I can pin point. My cycle stopped as a result of chemo (love it). And I presume, did not resume due to Tam? I hope menopause is in full affect, but will Tam be replaced with another med if this is the case? I am doing well on it and I hope I won't have to change medication. Thank you for the info!
I was on Tamoxifen for 5 years, wish I'd been on it longer now although did have a womb cancer scare. I had a recurrence 3 years after I stopped it. Stage 4, 4 years after my recurrence in lungs. Started Letrozole plus Palbociclib and 10 months later couldn't be seen on my ct scan. I refused a hormone blocker after my recurrence due to osteoarthritis. Thank you for this information and interesting about supplements, I do swear by turmeric though as it keeps me off painkillers
Thank you for this information. As much as I can’t stand Tamoxifen I am very afraid to stop it later. I have this bad feeling that these anti estrogen therapies only suppress the cancer, and can’t kill it. I would hate to take estrogen blockers (or AIs) for life but I really like to BE ALIVE. What a dilemma. Best of luck and good health to you Celia.
I'm not sure if it's safe and it's not regulated so you don't know what you're actually getting and if you eat a healthy diet you shouldnt need extra Vit b

Hey doc can you explain why you recommend fruits and veggie for cancer when you know that the body will turn that all into sugar and that sugar will go directly to feeding and spreading the cancer? I hear Oncology is having major success with curing cancer using the Carnivore/fasting protocols. I know that's not the name they call it, but that what it is. Also if I remember right there is 3 types of estrogen in the body. The one your referring to is caused by excess amounts of carbs that the body can't clear properly cuz the body has to many toxins to deal with so it stores it. I think if people stopped putting the sugar, the carbs, the junk foods, over processed food, and yes fruits and veggie, in their mouths they would find they do much better. Also can you point me to the research paper that proves eating veggie and fruits is better to eat. I've been looking but still not found any meaningful research. I did find something where they asked people over years what they ate on Monday, June 5, 2022? But don't think that is very good science to rely on since it relied on people guessing what they ate. So I'd really like the research to read that your promoting to eat veggie and fruit to help with cancer/illness. Would be great to read how they preformed the research and what all the out comes are. My experience is veggie and fruit are a terrible source of nutrients, not to mention almost every single plant we eat from has over 100 carcinogens in what we eating. Why is it safe to eat carcinogens but not okay to inhale them? People get a lot more carcinogens eating the veggies then if they inhaled, considering the amount of veggies people consume. Another person just trying to weed my way through the research to get healthy!
I had surgery for DCIs 9 weeks ago and have 5 days of radiotherapy in September. I’m in the Uk and they have prescribed me tamoxifen.. she did say if I didn’t get on with it I could take babytam but you say they don’t prescribe it for DCIS?
Dcis, high grade, ER and PR positive right mastectomy done,no chemo or no radiation.braca 1 and 2 negative,no family history. Does tamoxifen needed or not? If I do double mastectomy whether tamoxifen needed or not
Most cancer sevivors die of heart failure not cancer because of the side effects of the hormone tab, chemo and radiation 😢please when you are telling us cancer sevivors what the side effects are include all side effects..
My mom had a lumpectomy and localized radiation now she has afib.. she has no other health issues.. she then got BC a second time and had a double mastectomy with no radiation. She passes out and she has processing issues. It’s concerning how difficult things are for her cognitively.. I know it’s the tomx..
I got a pulmonary embolism. The only good thing I lost heaps of weight. Stopped after 15months because of the embolism. Previous was on Arimidex, after 10ths too debilitating, couldn’t move, surgeon said stop that.
Some doctors are using it but the jury is out as to whether it stops people dying from breast cancer, instead of stopping them getting a primary invasive cancer. And the considerable side effects may outweigh any benefits
Dear Liz, if you are taking tamoxifen plus a quarterly injection of a human gonadotropin analog, should you anyway use a contraceptive method? I don’t get my period after the chemo and now with the endocrine therapy and I wonder, whether I must use contraception. Thanks so much for this videos. I wish, you recover soon. All the best ❤
If you ovaries have been switched off then it should be OK but if you stop the injections then you need to use contracpetion. Your periods can stop on Tam but you can still get pregnant and tamoxifen damages a growing foetus
thank you for the information, but I highly question why turmeric would interfere with tamoxifen? turmeric is a natural antiinflammatory for the body, and one of the causes of cancer is the inflammation of the body. So, not taking turmeric is saying not helping the body to cure from inflammation and therefore not prevent cancer :/
I threw that shit in the garbage and never looked back. I'm still here 8 years later. I've been having success with diet and lifestyle change. 😌 I credit my 3 tablespoons of freshly ground flaxseed everyday for keeping me in remission. I truly believe food is medicine. I personally think the cancer world is nuts, and I declined almost everything they wanted me to do other than surgery.... which managed to ruin my life. Sorry I did it. Over a century of research and were still torturing people using the cut, slash, burn techniques lol... I'm flabbergasted. I'm grateful I refused most of their bullshit. It's bad enough they mutalated me.
I was given tamoxifen due to my age. I had breast cancer at 46 premenopausal. The only problem is the side effect of thickening of endometrium. But because of my earlier diagnosis of precancerous cells in my endometrium. I only took it for 3 years.
Can I start taking tamoxifen to prevent breast growing when I start hrt? I’m a transgender woman and I’m living in a transphobic Muslim republic. I’m not ready to come out, but want to be more feminine in appearance
Yes healthy lifestyle including diet. Sorry Dr Liz, you are not qualified to make any recommendations of health. That is not what you are trained to do. Vitamin D deficiency is a huge problem, even with breast cancer risk. Eating more vegetables and fruits will not get you vitamin d. You don’t realize that you are giving bad advice to people and can have serious negative effects. Please do some in depth studies before making such a dangerous health advice.
Had breast cancer 13 year's ago I was prescribed this drug for 5 years. But I never took it. I'm fine so far.
I hope you stay that way. Make sure you keep checking for symptoms of a recurrence as it can come back 20-30 years in the future
Of course you’ll stay that way!!!

very clear information......I have a couple of questions I'd like to ask you
go ahead
I'm so sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing this with me
Is it basically the same for Letrozole? If not could you do a video on Letrozole please
That's coming but yes it is basically the same. You have a few more side effects with L and you need to look after your bones
I am taking Tamoxifen nearly four years fortunately l haven't got any side effects
This is so useful, thank you! Will you do one on Letrozole as well? (I watched the short one on aromatase inhibitors)
I'm scripting it as we speak
Thank you so much
Thank you! I'm on tamoxifen and will be tuning in to your next vlog with great interest - i hadn' teven considered taking my pill at night insteaed but that makes so much sense! A big thank you - Love you on IG as well.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Liz. I was on tamoxifen for 5 years. I stopped taking it 2 months ago and I’ve been bleeds for 3 weeks. Btw I’m 51.
Hi! I'm weighing the pros ans cons of starting tamoxifen. Do u minf sharing if u had many side effects?
I started it last week. Barely any side effects. A lot of women don't have any side effects or barely any, often they lessen in a few mos.
My life is worth at least trying it. Couldn't imagine not even trying it . I'm no quitter.
how do you purchase it and from where?
Does ibuprofen block or interfere with tamoxifen?
Hi Liz, thanks for all the work you do to highlight breast cancer care. I’ve been on Tamoxifen for 5 years and can’t cope with the thought of another 5. Is it common that people weigh up the positive and negative benefits (impact to quality of life verses reactance) and are you able to speak into this? Thanks!
Does Tamoxifen cause joint / muscle pains?
It shouldn't do as it doesnt remove all oestrogen, unlike the aromatse inhibitors but many women do get aches and pains
I get knee pain and leg pain too by taking this pill.
Very informative. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Is there any benefit to taking 5mg/day, if that is all I can tolerate? (invasive ductal carcinoma Stage 1, grade 2)
Why not temoxefen when DCIS grade 0? No lymph nodes removed. Why does the UK not give meds. I don’t want to take tamoxifen. Pls answer. Is DCIS CONSIDERED BREAST CANCER?
can you make a video about Abemaciclib please? i am taking it and it is incredibly destructive :(
I’ve done one. It’s called CDK Inhibitors.
Does eating eggs raised estrogen?
In UK, does the oncologist prescribed tamoxifen for women who expressed 50% ER +ve? Or do they do gene expression assay before making any decision?
We normally prescribe it for anyone who is weakly positive and above
Is it only warfarin or all "blood thinners"? Anastrozole gave me a blood clot in my heart so my onco changed to Tamoxifen. I questioned the decision because im Tamoxifen causes blood clots too. He said because im on Xarelto i should be fine.
Warfarin can be problematic in so many areas. My understanding is Xarelto and Eliquis (the newest anticoagulant product) are perfectly safe.
I'm not sure I'm afraid as there are so many new blood thinners on the market and I don't prescribe them but your Dr wouldn't give you a tablet taht wans't safe
Xarelto caused severe spinning and blackouts, tamoxifen caused a pulmonary embolism
What is ER positive cancer?
Breast cancer that has a lot of receptors for the hormone oestrogen on its cells
Dr. Riordan you said you had breast cancer 3xs, so did you not take any medication or did it just not help?
If it's not one thing, it's the other😢. 15 months on Tam and no side effects that I can pin point. My cycle stopped as a result of chemo (love it). And I presume, did not resume due to Tam? I hope menopause is in full affect, but will Tam be replaced with another med if this is the case? I am doing well on it and I hope I won't have to change medication.
Thank you for the info!
You can take tam if you’re pre or post menopausal
Very informativ and motivation. Video
Thank you for this information and interesting about supplements, I do swear by turmeric though as it keeps me off painkillers
thanks for sharing this with us
Thank you for this information.
Double check but Im almost positive..They say not to take turmeric with tamoxifen.
Can you take Vitamin Super B from young living for energy while on tamoxifen?
I'm not sure if it's safe and it's not regulated so you don't know what you're actually getting and if you eat a healthy diet you shouldnt need extra Vit b
What about aromatase inhibitors can you do a video
Coming soon x
Hi doc, i am taking tomaxfen for 5 years doc gave me after i came to india i am taking this drug Dailey i think this medicine have very much side effects like walking and sepiking plz tell me some advise my treatment happed in canada after my therphy do i came to india here i don't know what i will do i came to india after 14 years so i ask you i hope you will give me reply not like before you told ask your doctor as a good doc give me good advise plz. Thanks
I'm really sorry but I can't give personal medical advice
Another person just trying to weed my way through the research to get healthy!
there is no evidence to date to show that fasting affects breast cancer outcomes.
I had surgery for DCIs 9 weeks ago and have 5 days of radiotherapy in September. I’m in the Uk and they have prescribed me tamoxifen.. she did say if I didn’t get on with it I could take babytam but you say they don’t prescribe it for DCIS?
Sometimes people are prescribed Tamoxifen - it depends on your individual tumour characteristics and your hospital's protocols
Cool Cool Cool. My heart is in a weird spot and it was right in the way of the radiation. We microwaved my heart.
My Dr.prescribed tamoxifen for me,after I was 15 years away from menopause.
Could you please clarify why tamoxifen is not prescribed to DCIS type in UK?
Some doctors are using it but the jury is out as to whether it stops people dying from breast cancer, instead of stopping them getting a primary invasive cancer. And the considerable side effects may outweigh any benefits
Does tamoxifen can cause cervical cancer?
If double mastectomy done for dcis no radiation and no chemo, does tamoxifen needed or not
Have a great day today doc
Thank you!
Hi Dr. Liz - can you take Tamoxifen and Red ginseng or Panax ginseng?
Dear Liz, if you are taking tamoxifen plus a quarterly injection of a human gonadotropin analog, should you anyway use a contraceptive method? I don’t get my period after the chemo and now with the endocrine therapy and I wonder, whether I must use contraception.
Thanks so much for this videos. I wish, you recover soon. All the best ❤
If you ovaries have been switched off then it should be OK but if you stop the injections then you need to use contracpetion. Your periods can stop on Tam but you can still get pregnant and tamoxifen damages a growing foetus
@@DrLizORiordan Thanks so much Liz for your time and dedication 🙏. Lot of energy! You got this 💪
I couldn’t take it or anastrazole
thank you for the information, but I highly question why turmeric would interfere with tamoxifen? turmeric is a natural antiinflammatory for the body, and one of the causes of cancer is the inflammation of the body.
I hope that continues to work for you but it's not a regime I would have personally recommended to my patients
I was given tamoxifen due to my age. I had breast cancer at 46 premenopausal. The only problem is the side effect of thickening of endometrium. But because of my earlier diagnosis of precancerous cells in my endometrium. I only took it for 3 years.
Thank you for sharing this with us x
Can I start taking tamoxifen to prevent breast growing when I start hrt? I’m a transgender woman and I’m living in a transphobic Muslim republic. I’m not ready to come out, but want to be more feminine in appearance
1)Does tamoxifen can cause cervix cancer?
2)
If double mastectomy done for dcis,no radiation and no chemowhether tamoxifen needed or not
1 - no
2 - some doctors treat DCIS with Tamoxifen. It's rarely done in the UK
I lost my mind on it
My god no one understands how bad this drug is. Some of us have to work. And we can't do it on tamoxifen. No one addresses that. Not everyone is rich.
Or check with a pharmacist for interactions, they do know as well about medication
❤️❤️🙏❤️🙏👏👏
Yes healthy lifestyle including diet. Sorry Dr Liz, you are not qualified to make any recommendations of health. That is not what you are trained to do. Vitamin D deficiency is a huge problem, even with breast cancer risk. Eating more vegetables and fruits will not get you vitamin d. You don’t realize that you are giving bad advice to people and can have serious negative effects. Please do some in depth studies before making such a dangerous health advice.
Thank you, Dr! Hot flushes are a real nightmare, though.
yes they are! I still struggle
Thanks!
Welcome!
