Most heartbreaking OSU loss in my lifetime. And the crazy part is that this was Serna's first collegiate game and he never missed another extra point after this in his next three plus seasons.
I had never been more relieved to win a game in my entire LSU fanhood until the 2007 season. I felt so bad for Serna. He went on to have a hell of a career though.
Totally!! I wrote him, I felt so bad for him. So nice the way he recovered and had a great career from there. (This would have been quite the upset victory otherwise!)
Anderson vs Russel = the prototype for NFL QB’s. Tall, not skinny, and have Howitzers for arms. If Russel had Anderson’s drive, dedication, and given fucks he could have been one of the greats of all time. Had Anderson had a good team he may have won a ring.
For no apparent reason, this game popped back into my mind today. I was in middle school and was so excited the beavs were playing an awesome game on the road, against a top ranked team, in hot and muggy conditions, in one of the most intimidating stadiums in college football. In the 4th quarter, I got a call from my dad that our family's dog jumped out of his truck and broke her leg. The rest of my family rushed down to the vet, but I still listened to the game on the radio. I was really sad that our amazing dog Jasmine might have to be put down. Our family decided to forgo our next vacation (to either Disneyland or Hawaii, I forget) and use that money to fix her leg. We made it home in time for OT. I was feeling a little better about our dog, but really sad that we won't go on our first big vacation in 5 years. Then, Serna shanks another XP and we lose. That was such a rough day. On the flip-side, Jazzy got some pins in her leg and healed up enough to live on for another 12 years. She was one of the best dogs I've ever known. Serna went on to be the best Kickers for OSU, becoming absolutely ice cold during big situations. It was really motivating to see someone have such a colossal failure so early in their career come back to be the greatest. Our family didn't end up taking a big vacation until 2007, but at least we made it before my relationship with my dad crumbled because of how awful he treated my mom and our family basically crumbled. Things are better now, and I'm working through a lot of other similar, awful situations from my childhood...but just felt like getting all of this out on a 13 year old youtube video about a CFB game 20 years ago.
I was on the 3rd row in the southeast corner. Did it rain? Nah, couldn’t be. I was probably just soaked head to toe from the humidity. Ruined my tottie too.
Miss RON Franklin! I remember this game very well. I had just moved and did not have cable hooked up, yet and had to listen to it on the radio. Took years off my life!😂😂 Glad my Tigers won, but felt awful for Oregon State's kicker.
Kyle Alexander Wilson You aren’t necessarily wrong, but Utah and Boise didn’t have nearly the strength of schedule so, it was really between the top 3 teams. My only beef about it was the fact that the year before, in the same scenario, they voted to split the championship. If 2003 was split, 2004 shoulda been split imo. And this is coming from someone that hates Auburn with a passion.
The SEC has always been overrated outside of Alabama, and occasionally a second team. This was the case in 2004 as well, it was just that even the voters realized that wins over UL Monroe and The Citadel, shouldn't really count towards anything. Also, SEC teams should stop being cowards and not schedule FCS teams in November.
Jamarcus did this throughout his career. Even games he started. I was at the Capital One Bowl that year and it was more of the same. Down two scores, and he comes in and immediately leads us on 2 TD drives. And then that thing at the end happened.
Funny how Riley's first round as head coach at OSU before going to the NFL--he was gutsy and DID go for two against Washington in 1998 (and they didn't convert, to lose a heart-breaker!). He should have kicked that day, but went for two; then in this game should have gone for two but kicked the PAT!
Mike Riley doesn't get nearly enough blame not going for two here. Not only on the road vs a heavy favorite but also with a kicker who has missed two extra points. He really screwed up here.
Man. Over 7 years later and hard to watch. I love Alexis Serna, but damn if I didn't hate him for a couple months after that. One of the worst Oregon State losses of recent. They outplayed LSU but couldn't get the kicks for the score to reflect it. Go Beavs! 2012!
@tube2a Wrong Oregon States right tackle Doug Nienhuis actually played in the NFL and was really good in college. He was like 1 point away from being the best lineman in the conference.
Done in by the best kicker in the game missing three extra points. Would have arguably been Oregon State’s biggest win ever. On the road, against the reigning and undefeated national champions. SO close. Doh!
I remember this game as a Beavers fan, watched my father fall out of his chair onto the floor and my Mom just laughed at him and was like “you’re so pathetic.” But is really did hurt that badly to lose like that lol…
Eric Davis The game was delayed an hour because of what can only be described as a monsoon. I’ve literally never been more soaked in my life. So, the field made running the ball nearly impossible and we (LSU) had a senior QB that couldn’t spell “pass”. Once Jamarcus came in at the start of the second half we scored all our points.
man it hurts to watch and thats comin from a ducks fan... feel bad for serna cause thats probably the worst game hes ever had.. hes the best kicker to come out of OSU, and one of the best kickers to come out of the Pac-10
After this game I never said "Chance of rain-never" (Tiger Studium) again. LSU fans know what I'm talking about. I never cared for it tbh. The bottom fell out of the sky before the game and flooded parts of the City and obviously the field. Sloppy game.
@@larrymorales3492 When they were top-tier, sometimes champion SEC teams. Crushed them.. LSU beat...complete bottom Arizona twice and needed miracles to beat bottom-feeders ASU and OSU. @KingWillie2010 and Lou Groza award winner Alexis Serna would have won it for Oregon State two different times in regulation but instead, true freshman playing his first ever game Alexis Serna had to start his career on this game. another lucky win for LSU over a Pac 10 bottom-feeder. you aren't facing a bottom feeder this time.

Yeah man, especially since Oregon State almost beat LSU when LSU had 90,000+ in Death Valley. USC would have killed LSU. Proud Pac-12 fan (Except Oregon)
Bullshit pac 10 surfer bro ,LSU plays down to the COMPETITION they always do Oregon st couldt make a fucking extra point so go back home a loser if usc were coming in to baton rouge they would played there ass,s off

That's some serious voodoo there. Stadium is built on an old graveyard. That was one wet night. Rained for about an hour.
@@idanoreillyin fairness LSU’s kicker also missed some field goals he shoulda made too. The kicking was bad all around that day with those conditions
Alexis Serna went on to win the Lou Groza award the next season.
Anderson vs Russel = the prototype for NFL QB’s. Tall, not skinny, and have Howitzers for arms. If Russel had Anderson’s drive, dedication, and given fucks he could have been one of the greats of all time. Had Anderson had a good team he may have won a ring.
Serna never missed an extra point for the rest of his career at OSU. I hope this isn't what cost him an NFL job, cause he was a hell of a kicker
I was at this game. Was a hell of a game. It was JaMarcus Russells coming out party as a freshman. He came in and won the game for us that day.

Was at this game in the south endzone. Holy cow I can guarantee you it does indeed rain in Death Valley.
It never rains. It only storms
I was on the 3rd row in the southeast corner. Did it rain? Nah, couldn’t be. I was probably just soaked head to toe from the humidity. Ruined my tottie too.
Me too! We were joking in the flooded tunnel about "wet beavers".
Miss RON Franklin!

"the overrated sec."
This was the year an undefeated SEC team was shut out of the championship game.

Serna had an outstanding career AFTER this game!! Poor guy had a rocky start, though!
I still remember this game like it was yesterday.... Wish it was the early 2000’s again smh
I remember this game. I’ve never been more soaked in my life. It was fun to reminisce... because I was tore up at the time.
Boy it's easy to forget how talented Jamarcus was sometimes. Man could he sling that thing.
Watching Alexis Serna singlehandedly lose this game is one of my core college football memories.
Jamarcus did this throughout his career. Even games he started. I was at the Capital One Bowl that year and it was more of the same. Down two scores, and he comes in and immediately leads us on 2 TD drives. And then that thing at the end happened.

Should have gone for 2, Mike Riley had fire back then! He was pissed.

Very valid point, never thought of that, especially with the wet muddy field and Serna missing the previous two extra points.
Both announcers said they were going to a second OT even though they'd missed two extra points already.
Jamarcus Russell wow hell of a pro

Close game! OSU gave nick saban a run for his money!
I had no idea what happened in this game. I watched him send on the kicker in overtime and I’m like “Are you serious?”
Great game, and I'm a Beaver fan. All I can say is Serna had a bad day. He comes Oregon State pulls it off, but oh well.
Me too.
Man, this hurts to watch haha. the kid was a good kicker too.
Derek Anderson was one of the Beaver gunslingers from the good days!

We weren't undefeated in 2003. We lost 1 game to Florida.

I was at this game. my first and only LSU game. Boy did i get soaked.
"He missed it....I DON'T BELIEVE IT....he missed a 3RD one". 🤣🤣🤣@ Ron Franklin
Who are these announcers??? I like them
Lol its funny how half of LSU's team is still playing football (NFL) and like none of the oregon state team is recognizable.
Remember when LSUs coach put in a different QB and we won the game? Yeah..
Oregon state was clearly the better team and deserved to win this, PERIOD>
Not at all. LSU controlled the second half.
Bullshit lsu way fucking better Oregon state didt win 5 games that year
I was there, the rain before the game was a bad as the Miami game.
As a duck fan, OSU had this game, they should have one but the kicker screwed it all up
God I hated Serna so much after that game. What a turnaround!
terrible coach decision. u go for two to win there no doubt
how in the hell did osu come that close to beating lsu? i didnt even know they faced an sec team.

Hopefully there's a Netflix doc done on why the Serna kid for Oregon State decided to miss 3 PATs. Obviously on purpose.
man it hurts to watch and thats comin from a ducks fan... feel bad for serna cause thats probably the worst game hes ever had.. hes the best kicker to come out of OSU, and one of the best kickers to come out of the Pac-10
@OregonDuckFreak As an OSU fan, Oregon had the 2006 Civil War. They should have one but the kicker screwed it all up.
it's called a point of motivation
You win this round nick saban
when they beat you in the civil war this same season
Damn, that kicker had a mealtdown
USC would have kicked LSU in the ass if they played in 2004.
Bullshit
“Let’s play a second overtime!”
Let’s not lol
How did OSU blow that. Go Jimbo.
Proud that we even took the #3 team to OT at their own house - one of the loudest stadiums in college football. Go Beavs!
LSU did not win this game, Oregon State lost, haha. Nowhere has that saying ever been more true. I threw up in my mouth watching this game.
Jamarcus Russell: Over praise here? Where he now?
