Hey everyone! Hope you enjoy my POV review of this M5 while I was in NJ! This is the last video on this car before we get back to builds on Monday! See ya then!
Great car, unusual yet good choice for a rental. One thing, EDC = Electronic Damper Control. If you set it to the maximum it makes the car firm and as you say unforgiving. Go to a lower setting and the car becomes softer and compliant...
Awesome vid. Around what town do you live in NJ? I'm in union county right by watching reservation myself. Used to be the spot for those high school L rides haha. Great driving road for sure
If it’s a grocery getter and work commuter, there is absolutely zero need for 500 horsepower. You’re not gonna be going 200 mph in your daily driver. The highway’s got a speed limit. My daily has 200 horsepower, and as a daily driver, it fulfills its purpose perfectly.
He was commenting on the rough suspension while in M mode, which sets the EDC to level 2 and makes the suspension MUCH stiffer. When you set the dampers to soft, it is not too bad of a ride.
E60 M5 manual started in M.Y. 2007. I remember and always wanted. It took 10 years, but found a 2008 M.Y. 6spd and love it! This car gets slammed for reliability, but when serviced correctly, is not near as bad as some other German offerings. Rod bearings (have not been done at 80k miles), but monitoring with Blackstone oil analysis and good old fashion "sound detection" VANOS H.P. line can fail, throttle actuators can be rebuilt. Most dangerous item is a leaking fuel injector. Can result in hydro lock, bent rod, and destroy engine. Again, manageable with proper maintenance and not running with MIL light. Very fun car!
FlyingLunatic my original clutch just failed in my m6 at 88k miles. So nowhere near 40k kms way longer than that about 140-150k kms and dealer quoted me 2200 total. These cars are nowhere near as expensive to own as people make them out to be
I am the proud owner of one of the 300, E63 M6 Coupe Manuals. I've actually never had it on the road yet because I bought it already with a shot VANOS pump. I have the engine removed right now and I'm doing several things including the rod bearings. Can't wait to get that thing on the road and feel what it can do!
Entrepreneurs in Cars not true at all. He makes it pretty clear about the issues at the end and also that he got it from Turo. Now if only some RUclipsr would be forthcoming about how insanely expensive the brakes are on a F10 M5 while recommending a high mileage one.
6 speed e60 m5 owner here...Love mine. I have daily driven her for over 100,000 miles in Southern California. Replaced my rod bearings as normal "wear item" at 82,000 miles. BTW, 2007 was the first year for the 6 speed.
I think I’d rather get a cheaper Subaru since I like fun. Actually, it might be more fun as the center of gravity due to the boxer engine is lower. It could also be more reliable if I want to get the four cylinder but would have to worry about the gasket leaking which happens at 100K miles.
I bought a 2008 three months ago, and i love it. Im not out melting tires off or ripping corners but for what i paid and the car i got shit best bang for my dollar
I own a 2009 M5 that I picked up a little over 2 1/2 years ago. It came with 31k miles, fully loaded for $27k. Since then I have logged about 20k miles and use it year-round including winter with Blizzak tires. I get excellent traction wet/dry/snow, unless I hit an ice patch. This is an amazing car and if you can pick one up and not go broke if you have to pay for a major repair job, then by all means, go for it! You won't be sorry. I can smoke almost every car I come across in reality. Sure there are a very small handful of cars that I meet on the road that can pull ahead, but anything that could "smoke" this car is probably not street legal. The best part of having a 500hp car is not the off-the-line acceleration, though that is fun too. The best part is when I am in the fast lane and get behind a slow car that doesn't want to move over and is the type of jerk that will speed up if you try to pass. All I need is the space to move over to the right and about 3 car lengths ahead of the car in front. At 70MPH, I can drop it down from 7th gear into 4th gear, which pops the RPMs up in the 5k range, where the power band is. Then, before the jerk can step on the gas to try to prevent me from passing, he (yes, always a dude that does this...) is looking at my tail lights as I blow past going about 100-110+ if I don't let off the gas. Even if it is a powerful car, the delayed reaction they have means that there I have never experienced a situation on the road where I am not way past them before they react. And you can have that power too, if you have some upfront capital and are willing to take on the risk of a major repair. Here is some practical stuff... Oil is 10W60, which Castrol, Royal Purple, and some other sell. Even in bulk, the oil is $12/qt, and you need to buy 10-12 quarts per change. 8qts goes into the engine, and then you need to add a quart every 2-3k miles, since you have so many piston rings for that oil to slip by just a little bit. Oil will last you about 10k miles though. The discussion on the rod bearings is all over on other forums. The general guidance here is that you should retain a sample of oil and can send it to a lab for metals analysis. This supposedly tells you how much metal is coming off of your rod bearings, and if it you are in need of a bearing replacement. At least there is a method to tell before your $25k engine breaks! To be sure, I don't believe this car is for the person who saves his or her money to buy the next after market part for their Civic Si, and then does the labor themselves to save on cost (I used to be that person). This car is for the person who is looking for a $30-40k used luxury car that is willing to put a bunch of money aside to pay for a repair, and won't bat an eye at spending a few hundred to have an inspection, pay $2-3k for the inevitable new set of summer tires that you will need if you buy new, plus winter tires if you plan to drive in those conditions. If those numbers shock you, this car is not for you. If those numbers shock you, then be aware that this car comes with everything...except fuel economy. I average 12.5 mpg. If I am cruising for a couple hundred miles on the highway, I can get as high as 17-19, but that is no fun at all!
From 1998 to 2008 the car industry made a huge progress, but from 2008 to 2018 they are just keep adding fucking touch screens everywhere inside the newer models, engines are the same... Or smaller than in 2008...
So many angry replies. None of you would speak to a stranger so harshly. Cold hearted imo. Anyways.. It's a sign of the times. Our whole world paradigm is turning into a technocracy. Scientism is becoming the mainstream religion, consuming the minds of the learned and the wise. We are all little sheep being herded into this Orwellian world of total control through tech. Wake up and look around at your world, it's going to become more obvious as time passes. This is all foretold to come. History repeating, there is nothing new under the sun. Dragon eating it's own tail.
I have a lot of dream cars, from the likes of Lamborghini and Aston Martin and various “exotic” brands. Unfortunately, as a college student who is graduating in a year, those cars are reserved for 30’s and 40’s, if I’m lucky, with a 12 year loan. That leaves me with around $30k for a car after college that will get me to and from a desk job. I could either get a new Honda Civic that will be reliable and have good MPG ratings, but having a slice of exotic car ownership that I could theoretically drive every day is very appealing. I’ve personally driven in one, and I’ve also driven in cars like a Huracan and Murcielago SV (in my profile pic!). I kid you not, the M5 truly compares in craziness and drama that the half million dollar Lambo’s create. Revving to 8k RPM literally feels like warp speed, and it can drift any corner with half throttle with the EDC turned off. I’ve also driven a new M4, and while it compares with power, the M5 beats it in regard to sheer scariness - it literally scared the crap out of me if I gunned the M5, not so much with the M4. You genuinely feel like you’re going warp-speed. I think this car, as unreliable as it is, is the coolest car in the world for the money. The maintenance and gas costs are high, but to someone who wants a piece of exotic lifestyle, it’s worth it. At the end of the day, would you rather get into your Civic and blend in with everyone else and hate driving back home every day, or would you like to come out of the office, turn on your V10 monster of an engine, rev it to 8k RPM on the onramp, and smile the whole way, not wanting to turn it off and just keep driving?
You'll never have a transmission issue with the SMGIII. You'll need to change the pump motor once in the life of the car ($300). The engine has minor maintenance issues that are all once in the lifetime of the car, VANOS hose, VANOS solenoids, throttle actuator gear. That's it.
MrSuperawesome5000 the $300 hydrolic pump for the SMG 3 is mounted to the top of the trans bell housing and requires the trans to be dropped to put in.. So if your dropping the trans you might as well do the clutch and flywheel.. And in either case you need a very expensive computer to recalibrate the smg3 when your done. So your looking at least 2 grand to do the 300 dollar pump...
vrDarkone If someone charged you for programming after they swapped your pump motor they ripped you off. It's plug and play. And adding the cost of a new clutch to a job "just because" doesn't mean that job costs that much more it means you added in a clutch.
Sorry dude, you are wrong, I drive one everyday. THe car feels incredibly light, you are probably just driving in 400hp mode, then it feels heavy. I never drive on 400, I am always on 500hp, steers and feels agile and solid
I absolutely love the e60 style. I've owned a 545i and 550i, both horrifically unreliable cars but they just drive like nothing else. I've been looking for a e60 m5, I know they aren't reliable and I know they're a money pit but no model before or after drives the way the e60 does. It's other worldly.
I've currently got an E60 545i that i got for $1000 due to a low oil pressure and misfire issue, replaced 6 oil check valves, oil pressure sensor, spark plugs and coil packs and it runs like a dream. Got someone coming to buy it today for $9500, only cost me $900 in parts from FCP Euro. They aren't horrifically unreliable as long as you do regular maintenance.
Great video! EDC actually stands for electronic damper control, it has nothing to do with the stability control, it sets the stiffness of the suspension.
I own an E60 545i. 4.5ltr V8 , 330bhp and its immense. Also the fact that you can pick up a top example for around 4k sterling is 👌. I shopped around and picked one up for 2.4k at a steal. Would love to go bigger and better and get E60 M5 next. In my opinion the most beautiful M5 ever made. A real beast of a machine.
whats the year of the one hes driving right now, im considering getting one and price is really important so is the 2006-07 ones the best for the money?
@@William-Morey-Baker Not really. bringatrailer.com/bmw/e60-m5/ the avg sale price is right at 20k with lots in the 15k range, people have gotten them for 10k, they're remarkably cheap because people are stupid and will believe that the car is horrendously unreliable, without ever sitting in one. It's preventative maintenance, just like if you don't replace the timing chain on a Subaru at 100k, it will grenade the engine, all engines require preventative maintenance, and if you don't do it and expect the car to be like a plain jane 5 series that can take a million miles of beating with just changing the oil, then YES, you are going to grenade the engine. I don't see why people can't seem to understand that this car in particular is just a little special, you can't treat it like every other car on the road, and if that's not for you, then buy another car, this one is solely for enthusiasts, not the everyday driver who's expecting every single car on the road to perform as well as a Toyota Corolla, if you're expecting that, then this is most definitely not for you, if you're the kind of person who isn't friends with their mechanic, this is not the car for you. If you expect that your 20k purchase price is all you're ever going to spend on the car, this is not the car for you.
Not sure I would be telling people to do their own rod bearing repair on jack stands in the back yard unless they have some significant experience wrenching. You can easily score your crank, miss a step, mis-torque a bolt, or get the caps pairs mixed up, then your engine is toast.
I have a 2001. The E39 and E60 are both great cars, but you have to stay on top of preventative maintenance. And major service on critical engine components, like timing chains , VANOS, rod bearings is expensive. That $15k M5 is actually a $25k M5, if you plan on keeping it for a while and can't do a lot of work yourself.
I have a 2007 550i with the sport package and base automatic that I bought last year at 130k miles for 5k, and it's been the best purchase imaginable. I did have to spend 500 on a toolkit and parts to do the valve stem seals which is a common issue with the 4.8l 380hp v8 in these, but that wasn't that big of an issue, and she's running like a champ. It's also around 300 lbs lighter than the M5, and feels super agile, and fairly comfortable suspension while still very sporty, but I'm not sure how it directly compares to the M5's. Also the power band kicks in strong after 2800 RPM or so, so it does feel grunty. So if you don't necessarily want a ticking time bomb but still want a fast BMW, a 550i for around half to a third of the price could also be a great option.
I'm 25, just got a decent paying job (around $4000/month) and don't pay much in rent/other utilities. I'll be looking at the first gen 09 CLS63 amg with the performance package some time next year. Reason being: 1. To me it represents a nice compromise between seating space and beautiful styling. 2. I love the 6.2 v8, i knew someone who gave a few rides in his cl63 and it blew me away. 3. AMG airmatic feels nice enough for me. Will be a bit sharper with the performance package. 4. I have some diy experience from school, i can do my own brakes, motor/diff/transmission fluid.
if you're looking for something reliable or cheap to repair I don't believe that the BMW is it..but if you have money to throw away and one then I see no problem to buy one
What would you recommend? I do IT for a living but want to get into wrenching. I love these M5s but the MB E55 AMG is enticing as well. My budget is $15,000 to $20,000.
David Castellani the Benz won’t give you as much problems. The bimmer will probably make you smile more. I own an E55 and it’s one of the quickest cars I’ve owned. I’ve owned a C5 Z06 or an Evo X nodded to stage 3. I digress, the Benz is bulletproof. Nothing major will fail if maintained properly, even neglected E55’s are bulletproof.
You can get a better ride by switching out the run flats and using a tire with softer sidewalls. No spare makes that a bit scary if you have long commutes, but it works well for me on my 335. They also last longer which saves a couple grand.
So many knock on the Bangle styling, and I agree the e65 pre-lci 7 series aged horribly, but the rest of BMW's lineup from his era still look great today. Modern BMW's are too conservative and don't stand out like the e60/e65/e90/x3/x5 did in their era.
All Bangle cars in their base model form were hideous. Horrible. They ruined the 7 for years. The went from handsome to.. idk. BMW brass had to step in and did not let Bangle mess up the 3. The M versions were decent but that’s obviously because they were redone very sporty. In my opinion, recent years BMWs are are clean design. I like them.
My e60 m5 has 110000 on the clock and the only things done from new was , clutch, discs and pads all round, 2 sets of tyres , the engine, smg and rear transmission is in superb order as I had a Bmw technician check it out ,I have owned it 2 years with no issues ,i drive like a snail until it’s completely warmed up every thing overtakes me ,but when it’s warm it’s a different beast it rocks trust me and no less reliable than any other super saloons infact it’s brilliant
Donato Ricciardi I baby my cars when cold too, and love to rip past faster cars at night time. It's nice with about 100hp, so you can just rip around at like 60-100hp all day.
Ive seen way more of these with over 100k on the clock with no repair done/needed than not. People really blow the maintenance thing out of proportion.
This is a toy. Maintenance costs need to be compared to other toys like boats or other project cars. A Roush Mustang exhaust costs $3,000. Rod bearing replacement in an M5 is about $3,000 installed. Same cost, same enjoyment, everyone wins.
Buying one with a "Bumper-to-Bumper" warranty for around $30k makes the most sense for someone not inclined to work on their cars. I have it for 5yr/100k miles and it's the best decision I've made.
Isn't keyless start. The little holder to which you refer is the key slot which starts the ignition. The start button then starts the engine..... You'd be sitting in it for a long time and fruitlessly and go nowhere if you didn't put the key in the slot. Also, the EDC is the electronic damper control. The setting with two lights is the firm setting.... Finally, the car does not have an automatic mode - it is a single clutch semi manual gearbox which will change gear itself if in that mode, but it will never be an automatic box. Nice positive review however, shame it was damp when you drove it.
I daily drive my M5 and absolutely love it I have had multiple E46 M3’s even a 335i but there is just something special about having an M5 that doesn’t compare to the rest. It is the best of both worlds, if you want a fast exotic like car you have it or if you simply want a car that you can take on a road trip you also have it. There is nothing like driving a 4100 pound sedan with a screaming V10 under the hood to the grocery store to pick up some milk. Repairs come with any high class sports car just plan ahead and you will be fine! Also something he forgot to mention is the MPG, I average about 9-11 mpg. The gas tank on this car is very small so you will be at the gas station at least 2 times a week refilling it. But at that point it becomes Smiles per gallon.
I see this comment is over a year old, so I don't even know if this will be answered or not. I am considering purchasing an E60 M5 myself. Preferably one of the newest possible models with the V10 engine still available. Trying to avoid the earliest year models (assuming they were a tad bit worse?). What can you tell me, if anything about the repair costs? Reliability? Are there any major or common issues with this car? This is just one of four cars I'm considering in this sort of higher-powered 4-door sedan class. Car would be used as a daily driver, probably used 4 to 5 times a week.
Iron Man98 i see things this way, If you by a high performance vehicle, it will be prone to break, yes the 2008-2010 were a smidge better than the older years but still had smg pump failures. Mpg on average is almost a constant 8-9 mpg
@@provemewrong5183 Main reason I'm considering the M5, is because of the V10 engine and the horsepower it produces. It is however only one of four cars that I am considering.
I had a 2006 M5 SMG. With 22K on it, I decided to give it a moderate launch to explain to my uncle why this is a supercar...and he got the point. I stress "moderate". About 5 miles later, had the sprocket icon appear on the dash for the trans fault, but the car drove great. Made an appt at BMW to have it serviced a couple days later, and they told me it was an $10 sensor inside the transmission...but in order to fix that $10 sensor, they had to replace it to the tune of $8K. I had 3 days of factory warranty left at that point...thank god. But, it would have been $8K out of pocket to replace it in the following week. Got rid of that car as soon as it was fixed. Again..."MODERATE", would not qualify as abusive at all. I still get mail for extended warranties for it in the mail. I loved the car, but that was enough. Never again.
I've got a 2009 M5. I changed the oem rod bearings for BE bearings in May 2018. I'm now changing the smg slave cylinder and plcd. Rod bearing job cost $2500 total, and I'm looking at about $1000 for all the smg work. Does this car make sense? No, it doesn't...until you drive it. The power, the looks, and, oh man, that noise! I absolutely love it!
@@tofamily17-11 I've had that car for a while now, coming up on three years now and all it needed so far was a timing belt change. Keep in mind the previous owner has already changed the valve cover gaskits so, I guess i got lucky.
I have a 2006 M6 with only 43K. I bought it a few years ago with only 30K miles. The past owner really didn't drive it much which lead to alternator problems as well as replacement of the battery. Recently I had to replace one of the actuators at 43K, and it cost me about 1,300 for parts and labor. I don't use this as my daily driver but I do take it out a few days a week and love every minute. The styling and drive for this over 10-year-old car is still incredible. Let me know if you have ever done a piece on this beast of an M6 in an 06 or 07.
I'd like someone to show me just one high performance v10 vehicle that doesn't have some kind of issue. Cars like these aren't for everyone so if you can't deal just buy your generic Honda and Toyota and be on your way. It's that simple.
Its a very unique car (marques) for sure ; but come on , I don't think its to much to ask to "keep" main bearings in the engine! Oh, and I'll take the Manual trans.
While you were praising this "amazing V10 BMW engine" I remembered something. When you wrote for Jalopnik, did you ever meet the guy who wrote this article? The title is "BMW engines are gigantic pieces of shit." And fun thing, the article's lead photo is of a BMW V10... Dude's name was Freddy "Tavarish" Hernandez. Know him? :-/ jalopnik.com/bmw-engines-are-gigantic-pieces-of-shit-1784684330
Last time I checked people's opinions change. Maybe he had a string of bad luck with bmw engines right before he wrote the article. We've all gone from hating something to liking it. But I still think he wrote the article as clickbait , Jalopnik probably only publishes what they think will get clicks.
I love my E46 M3 but I want a M5 eventually. An E39 or E60 would be my targets. I know an E39 would be more reliable being a V8 and only being offered in manual and no SMG. However examples in equal quality to a E60 often run above 25k. So the cheaper option, even with asuming the cost of a smg rebuild and a rod-bearing job, it'd still be a better deal. idk I'm pressed.
Owned my E60 M5 for 2 years now, Things I've replaced so far is ABS unit (pump), Rod bearings, Horns, Service , Front pads done 4,000 miles 2 years, Great car expensive to fuel in the UK..
My friend owns one. Great performance but the pump has already gone on his. Clutch wore out (and I told him about the bearings but they seem ok so far). Lucky he got a mechanical warranty so all done for the cost of the premium/ excess.
i’ve owned couple Bmws myself and they were pieces of junk, repair after repair . im a dealer mechanic so labor was free, but ive spent allot dough. i was happy when i bought it at first, but i was 100 times happier when i sold them .
John Saa this is the worst bmw you can buy lmao ive smoked the doors out of every e60 m5 ive raced in my n54 335i on pure stage 2s pushing 680 on my low boost settings 😂 this bmw is str8 ass id rather have a mustang than an e60 m5 now the e60 535i is where the magic is but you dont know that
I know this comment is a bit late but,,, I bought a used 2008 M5 in 2010. It had 22k miles and a sticker of $101k. A great car! It was my daily driver until 2019 and while there were some expenses for new brake disc, batteries, tires windshield seal, etc. it was a great car. I took many a road trip between New Mexico and Phoenix and it spent summers in Oregon. I sold it last Sept in Oregon with 45k miles and have missed it ever since. It's a sophisticated animal that is great to drive.
Dark force, it's about engagement and a certain type of control. I appreciate both. Nothing like a finely tuned manual gearbox, the e46 m3 can turn anyone into a heel toe master. My e39 has a zf 5hp19 and is one of the best auto transmissions there is. Just change the filter and "lifetime" fluid every 50k
@@DarkForce852 two reasons in my opinion. Number 1, automatics may be faster but manuals are more fun (even though auto’s are still fun), and 2, they’re more reliable. The automatic’s can be troublesome, but the manuals are awesome!
I would gladly post photos of mine, which I traded for another car once the transmission died. Unfortunately, RUclips won't let me. Here's one for sale near me, though. www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201802013301175
internal vanos failure was something a racing BMW mechanic mentioned once to me when i was pitching maybe swapping my e92's v8 for a v10. Its basically the fact that vanos lines run under the timing chain and those lines burst in racing situations. and are quite pricey to rebuild as well.
I've had mine now for nearly 5 years... Only broke down once after it decided the oil for the slave cylinder wasn't producing enough pressure to activate the clutch, it didn't break down as such (threw up a warning and wouldn't let me select a gear - it's designed to stop you destroying it so will do what it can with error warnings... And no it doesn't spit error warnings every day either).... And as for the clutch, replaced after 100k miles... And that gave the tell tale slipping at 5k revs Didn't cost me my first born child!!! Less than £750 with parts and I'm sure your Ford focus will cost you the same to do Changing the side light bulb is more of a pain in the ass than ill informed keyboard car owners
I've seen this car plent online the bmw m5 2006 lr 2007 2006 is going for around 10 2007 around 15k if you buy one of these you gotta have money to fix the faults this is 2018 and if you buy a 2006 year car like this your gonna expect to have to do some work to it after having it awhile that's just how it is although this car is very bad ass I am saving for one in the near future
love the sound of this car e60 M5 and the e9x M3's... just got a 2015 M5 with comp pkg and unlimited mileage BMW warranty till June 2023 - thank goodness!
Love the e60 M5's. And the 6 series of the same era. I bought a 2009 535i. Still daily it to keep miles off of my truck. It's been very reliable for a BMW. No big issues at 100k. Vanos system of course, key fob sensor and a couple of electrical gremlins.
I followed you from Jalopnik to your RUclips career. This M5 thing is hard to watch. One of your most well known Jalopnik articles was "BMW Engines Are Gigantic Pieces Of Shit", complete with the very first thing you see being a V10 engine, complete with M badge, in the bay of a 2006 M5. You said that engine will "chew through its rod bearings in 60,000 miles", and the SMG failures were constant.
I actually owned one of these, unlike all the commenters, and no, it doesn't cost you $15k a year to maintain. You pay to play somewhat in gas and oil, but if you can ONLY afford a $15k car, this probably isn't the car for you. Good examples are still $25k
I've had mine now for nearly 5 years and the biggest expense is fuel and engine oil... That's daily driving... Wear and tear items like brakes and tyres it will eat depending on how you drive and how far on all cars I've replaced my clutch after 100k miles which in any car is normal... Its wasn't any more expensive than your standard car so stop moaning about expense especially if you don't own one
StaticImage You are absolutely Correct concerning the article.. This M5 was absolutely trash, unreliable, and the rear styling was butt ugly.. The M6 V10 was just as unreliable and the SMG pump failure was atrocious.
Boss martinez I did a lot of preventative stuff. I changed the rod bearings, throttle actuators, spark plugs and all the regular stuff. ABS pump has been rebuilt. Had 4000 miles sincr the rod bearing change, she is running smooth and sound.
Kevin Zhao you bought a piece of shit. You couldn't pay me to buy a car that is known for its problems, you e60 m5 owners are delusional and in denial.
Kevin Zhao same difference. You did it because everything you did was known to fail, I wouldn't do the rod bearings in my car just for preventative reasons. Just admit it, Bmw designed a piece of shit car, yeah the performance is awesome but at the price of parts failure.
I test drove one with 130k miles for 17k. Drove pretty decently. Smg is a bit slow but nothing beats the feel of the v10. I’d probably pick the new m3/m4/m5 over it but they aren’t even close to the level of depreciation of this car. I think I’m gonna try and look for one under 25k with 70k miles or less. Put in new rod bearing kit and pray the smg lump doesn’t go out and put 5k aside Incase that happens.
I have been daily driving my 2010 for 5 years now. The smg pump and clutch had to be changed under warranty. Other than that, just wear and tear items are needed. I have 105k miles now and the car drives great. I paid 36k for mine but maintain it like a 100k car. My blackstone oil reports have been coming in clean so my mechanic says no need for rod bearings. I love driving this thing and am not sure what I can replace it with that will make me this happy.
LIterally trying to watch every E60 M5 video on youtube so I can talk myself out of purchasing one..... and it works. Then as soon as I drive one I want it.... 🤤
I feel it's worth owning. I currently have a 08 M5 E60, with 82k miles on it. I've had it for 2yrs now and she runs good for a 10yr old car. I've done a muffler delete and k&n intakes and coding. I will be doing the headers next along with pullies. If you can give my channel a follow fortheloveofcars vlog.
I don't think Tavarish owns any car he bought from new. I think it's quite easy to read between the lines that the previous owner before him painted it black. He specializes in finding rebuild vehicles. I mean come on...
This is the car I pretty much wanted but I couldn’t afford it at the time because it was only out for a year at the time and I ended up buying a 550i M manual and I super-charged it and it’s got the same power as the M5 and it’s much much more of a sleeper so I’m pretty happy with it
beld capristo so why haven't the 2nd market automotive companies make upgraded parts for the car? I'm love euros but I know US domestic cars and upgraded parts are cheap due to a lot of competition.
beld capristo They are an engineering disaster. Its like they designed and engineer this car while they were drunk. A person have to be screaming at almost redline just for it to go fast, other than that it feels slow and sluggish. Its only a performance car and not even worth daily driving.
you need to educate yourself more on how engines work and create power. Every high reving NA engine lacks low torque! that's the difference and beauty of these engines.
Own the 2010 version and yes agree with you, had to rebuild the engine at a cost of 17K but i also overbored it 90thou, put in sleeves, stud kit, new h beam rods, new pistons and carbon rings, and high performance bearings. Also put in a Turner motorsports racing clutch and fly wheel getting rid of the two stage flywheel which is also another failure point.
I've been lusting over an e60 M5 for years now but I want a manual transmission. When I was ready to shop I found 1 or 2 in the country but they were asking well over $25K. I made a Hoovie move and settled on a 2013 335i with extraordinarily high mileage for less than half the price of the manual M5's. I won't be dealing with rod bearings but I'll have plenty of other things to keep me busy on weekends. haha I won't wrench every day but somewhat often.
I had one of these for a couple years. Incredible drive!! Broke always.... CDN$ when we were close to par with US. Slave cylinder gasket broke. Oil on my clutch.... $8000 Idle actuators have plastic gears that wear around 70,000k. $4500 Throttle actuators, same problem. Changed them myself for $2500 Cracked windshield $1400 (HUD installed) Cabin fan replacement $1000 Battery and install (need the computer programed to the bat) $600 And the bushings had to be replaced. Unfixed problems: Mirror stopped auto tinting and would just spaz when using the fold feature. ($750?) Passenger restraint system failure. Undiagnosed. There are dozens of other common problems these cars have that scared the crap out of me. Had to sell it. Now everything else just feels slow and lumbering. :( (replacements were a Ducati Monster and 2016 370Z)
Awww I love having car enthusiast moments with random people driving. Car dudes or car girls, it doesn't matter as long as you admire the other person's enthusiasm for driving and their machine. Cheers!
I have a 2008 m5 smg, when I bought it four years ago all the 6speeds seemed beat up or they were higher mileage. I’ve never had problems with this car as a daily, right now I need the clutch replaced and though a clutch on a civic would be cheaper I could never drive a stock civic. I bought a 2009 sl63 a year ago and I love that car as well but it’s just not the same. U can’t explain what it is about an m5 that makes an owner fall in love. If u know u know, if u don’t u don’t.
Hey everyone! Hope you enjoy my POV review of this M5 while I was in NJ! This is the last video on this car before we get back to builds on Monday! See ya then!

E39 has better quality and a better interior design, you can't deny that.
"Does it make sense to have a 500hp daily driver?" FUCK YES
After owning a E55 amg for 9 months now I can say I will never own a daily driver under 500HP

Rod bearings (have not been done at 80k miles), but monitoring with Blackstone oil analysis and good old fashion "sound detection"
VANOS H.P. line can fail, throttle actuators can be rebuilt.
Most dangerous item is a leaking fuel injector. Can result in hydro lock, bent rod, and destroy engine. Again, manageable with proper maintenance and not running with MIL light.
Very fun car!
That SMG gearbox is why it's so cheap there's a reason BMW stopped making them after this generation
No its because the rod berrings go on the car common and when that goes the wholw engine is fucked unless u fix it right away
Also, the clutch goes every 40000km if i remember correctly which is around 3-4000$ to replace...
FlyingLunatic my original clutch just failed in my m6 at 88k miles. So nowhere near 40k kms way longer than that about 140-150k kms and dealer quoted me 2200 total. These cars are nowhere near as expensive to own as people make them out to be
It was a one off motor for the m5, under engineered, built for speed and power, not reliability.
@Crooked Skate Supply Co dct
EDC is not stability control it is electronic damper control. (It stiffens up the suspension for better handling in the corners)

Entrepreneurs in Cars not true at all. He makes it pretty clear about the issues at the end and also that he got it from Turo. Now if only some RUclipsr would be forthcoming about how insanely expensive the brakes are on a F10 M5 while recommending a high mileage one.

I think I’d rather get a cheaper Subaru since I like fun. Actually, it might be more fun as the center of gravity due to the boxer engine is lower. It could also be more reliable if I want to get the four cylinder but would have to worry about the gasket leaking which happens at 100K miles.
more like mechanically inclined or rich, never finance a german car, dont do it.
ltwargssf R luckily I’m both, always buy in cash tho.
Same here, cash only, if you have to finance something, that means you cant afford it, buy it when you can.
Marcelo Velarde - yes? have you been living under a rock?

This is all foretold to come. History repeating, there is nothing new under the sun. Dragon eating it's own tail.
Just Zach wtf are you talking about you crack pot ?

Dont put yourself in debt ever
Easy. I rather make payments on a new car than making payments on repairs.
I totally get where you coming from.
so except for THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION it's reliable..
markw993 yes ! Just regular stuf 😂
Yes N54 and N55s are sick
31acruz how about the reliability of the car?
maybe after you replace clutch, pump, actuators, rod bearings, and valve cover gasket, should be pretty nice for about 50k

Well, every suspension part relates to the stability of the car, so, not that wrong after all...
I thought EDC was every day carry......multiple meanings I guess
I own an E60 545i. 4.5ltr V8 , 330bhp and its immense. Also the fact that you can pick up a top example for around 4k sterling is 👌. I shopped around and picked one up for 2.4k at a steal.
Would love to go bigger and better and get E60 M5 next. In my opinion the most beautiful M5 ever made. A real beast of a machine.

Yeah, the prices he quoted were like almost 10k too low...

Buying one with a "Bumper-to-Bumper" warranty for around $30k makes the most sense for someone not inclined to work on their cars. I have it for 5yr/100k miles and it's the best decision I've made.
rohit tunga who gave you that kind of warranty deal?
I'm curious how much was the extended warranty? My coworker bought a 2012 m5 I think and he bought a bumber to bumber for around 4k.
Several companies offer extended warranties. CarMax is one of them. There is USAA as well
There are several factors such as Year/Mileage/Deductible. I paid $4.5k for 5yr/100K/$50 deductible
rohit tunga thx I'm sure it's worth it
Isn't keyless start.
I worked as a tech for BMW when these came out and loved getting to do software update to allow burnouts.
@@ironman98 consider a well maintained 550i, better bang for the buck. i have 2007 225k mileage. great car.
@@provemewrong5183 Main reason I'm considering the M5, is because of the V10 engine and the horsepower it produces. It is however only one of four cars that I am considering.

@Kristof Alexy you don’t even know what job he’s starting stfu with your living beneath means negativity
Did you get it bro ?
Dat luck tho. xD
Well thank you for the review tavarish. I've been entertaining the idea of getting an E60 M5 and now I'm pretty much sold.
let the engine talk. you talk way too much
Galatasaray hell yeah
E60 has always been my favorite love the front and rear end even an inline 6 cylinder would be ok
This video inspired me to buy the M5 v10. I absolutely love it
Have u had any issues with your car? Thanks!
I own 4 m5’s 2006-2007 and all different mileages I bought at auction and have had zero issues out of any and they all get drove during the week
I'd like someone to show me just one high performance v10 vehicle that doesn't have some kind of issue. Cars like these aren't for everyone so if you can't deal just buy your generic Honda and Toyota and be on your way. It's that simple.
blacka dax dodge viper
Lexus LFA
I like it you are correct sir its a V10 not a toyota
Its a very unique car (marques) for sure ; but come on , I don't think its to much to ask to "keep" main bearings in the engine! Oh, and I'll take the Manual trans.
@@stefanczechorskidds8435 I couldn't say it better myself.
Yes, the hyprocrisy is unbelivable
Lmao what a prick
That's journalism these days, it's about making a stink and drawing attention , not about the opinion of the author.
SMH wow does anyone have integrity anymore
I got an e46 m3 and now also own an e60 m5 it's not that scary as people sound it.
You are just a terrible mechanic then
My dad is a mechanic and we rarely have to fix anything in the bmw because it runs good even with over 400k km
E60 M5 all the way
This car is only for people that have deep pocket

John Saa this is the worst bmw you can buy lmao ive smoked the doors out of every e60 m5 ive raced in my n54 335i on pure stage 2s pushing 680 on my low boost settings 😂 this bmw is str8 ass id rather have a mustang than an e60 m5 now the e60 535i is where the magic is but you dont know that
@@bimmerworksbmw5750 turbocharge the m5 e60 your going to be lost behind 😂
Ruslan Bin you dont even own a bmw you cant turbo this v10 its never been done
My 2000 e39 M5 maintenance is a PIA, drinks oil like I drink beer, and all the plastic parts are breaking...I still love and drive her every day.
"You can take a long way home" lol I wouldn't do that without a tow truck on standby
Awesome car for the money, but I'd go for the manual.
So rare though, but worth it. North American market only too.
Automatics are faster and more practical in the city, I don't know why you would want more work
Dark force, it's about engagement and a certain type of control. I appreciate both. Nothing like a finely tuned manual gearbox, the e46 m3 can turn anyone into a heel toe master. My e39 has a zf 5hp19 and is one of the best auto transmissions there is. Just change the filter and "lifetime" fluid every 50k
@@DarkForce852 the Smg transmissions in the bmw are troublesome manual is the way to go for less maintenance costs and repairs
@@DarkForce852 two reasons in my opinion. Number 1, automatics may be faster but manuals are more fun (even though auto’s are still fun), and 2, they’re more reliable. The automatic’s can be troublesome, but the manuals are awesome!
I loved the SMG in my 645Ci ... until it broke.
Jonathan Katz how much did it cost to fix it? Also why aren't there any aftermarket support for BMW parts other than factory
The 645Ci never came SMG
I would gladly post photos of mine, which I traded for another car once the transmission died. Unfortunately, RUclips won't let me.
Here's one for sale near me, though.
www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201802013301175
It would have been up to $4k/£4k to fix.
That's wild. I don't think we had that option in america. I'm pretty they only came with a 6 speed automatic.
internal vanos failure was something a racing BMW mechanic mentioned once to me when i was pitching maybe swapping my e92's v8 for a v10. Its basically the fact that vanos lines run under the timing chain and those lines burst in racing situations. and are quite pricey to rebuild as well.
I'm worried about the M62TU in my 540i... I sure as HELL can't do this one - although I would love to.
Rather own an AMG E55, but the M5 kicks ass as well.
Anyone in their right mind would know an e60 m5 going for 15k~ is a money pit
I would love to know how he got this for $15k. I just looked on autotrader. 2007s are going for $20
its a rental
I've had mine now for nearly 5 years... Only broke down once after it decided the oil for the slave cylinder wasn't producing enough pressure to activate the clutch, it didn't break down as such (threw up a warning and wouldn't let me select a gear - it's designed to stop you destroying it so will do what it can with error warnings... And no it doesn't spit error warnings every day either).... And as for the clutch, replaced after 100k miles... And that gave the tell tale slipping at 5k revs
Didn't cost me my first born child!!!
Less than £750 with parts and I'm sure your Ford focus will cost you the same to do
Changing the side light bulb is more of a pain in the ass than ill informed keyboard car owners
Yeah, I remember that article. He hated BMW M's! Now look what he has. Haven't liked him since that article.
The rod bearing thing is a way over hyped internet forum thing. Interestingly enough it's on forums where the big sponsors sell rod bearings... 🤔
I've had mine now for nearly 5 years and the biggest expense is fuel and engine oil... That's daily driving... Wear and tear items like brakes and tyres it will eat depending on how you drive and how far on all cars
I've replaced my clutch after 100k miles which in any car is normal...
An E60 M5 6-speed manual owner here! I drive the car a lot in NYC traffic and I do not regret it one bit.
Kevin Zhao any major problems ?
Boss martinez I did a lot of preventative stuff. I changed the rod bearings, throttle actuators, spark plugs and all the regular stuff. ABS pump has been rebuilt. Had 4000 miles sincr the rod bearing change, she is running smooth and sound.
Kevin Zhao you bought a piece of shit. You couldn't pay me to buy a car that is known for its problems, you e60 m5 owners are delusional and in denial.
Talkditings dem i did them not because they were broken. It's purely preventative.
Still got it?
00:00 "Hello, today I gonna review my M5", 4:35 "The owner of the car have painted them in black" TF M8? So it's yours or not
I don't think Tavarish owns any car he bought from new. I think it's quite easy to read between the lines that the previous owner before him painted it black. He specializes in finding rebuild vehicles. I mean come on...
it says in the beginning that its a rental
I think Tavarish is buying all the cars he liked when he was teen...
I would do the same 🙂
I do too
Andre Johnson if you’re referring to the m5 he didn’t buy it, it’s his friends car. #payattention

This is the car I pretty much wanted but I couldn’t afford it at the time because it was only out for a year at the time and I ended up buying a 550i M manual and I super-charged it and it’s got the same power as the M5 and it’s much much more of a sleeper so I’m pretty happy with it
Sounds like the SMG repair is less scary than the ABC repair on the SL550 I am considering.
I love the e60 m5, but anybody with car enthusiast common sense knows these cars are a money pit. This is why they are so cheap
beld capristo so why haven't the 2nd market automotive companies make upgraded parts for the car? I'm love euros but I know US domestic cars and upgraded parts are cheap due to a lot of competition.
beld capristo They are an engineering disaster. Its like they designed and engineer this car while they were drunk. A person have to be screaming at almost redline just for it to go fast, other than that it feels slow and sluggish. Its only a performance car and not even worth daily driving.
wsm34 I'm really not sure , I wish there were cheaper parts for the m5 . I really want one lol.
that means every AMG is piece of shit as well cuz they go even cheaper
you need to educate yourself more on how engines work and create power. Every high reving NA engine lacks low torque!
that's the difference and beauty of these engines.
BMW the ultimate driving machine to drain your bank account to $0.00.
Also the best cars out there
here in canada they go for almost 40-45k.
same here in Australia
Mint condition ones go for 35-40k $ in Poland
You can get good ones for 25-30k $
I won't be dealing with rod bearings but I'll have plenty of other things to keep me busy on weekends. haha I won't wrench every day but somewhat often.
fun fact - the 6speed manual was just available for the us market. here in europe you can just get the smg version.
kinda sad

I had one of these for a couple years. Incredible drive!! Broke always....
CDN$ when we were close to par with US.
Slave cylinder gasket broke. Oil on my clutch.... $8000
Idle actuators have plastic gears that wear around 70,000k. $4500
Throttle actuators, same problem. Changed them myself for $2500
Cracked windshield $1400 (HUD installed)
Cabin fan replacement $1000
Battery and install (need the computer programed to the bat) $600
And the bushings had to be replaced.
Unfixed problems:
Mirror stopped auto tinting and would just spaz when using the fold feature. ($750?)
Passenger restraint system failure. Undiagnosed.
There are dozens of other common problems these cars have that scared the crap out of me. Had to sell it. Now everything else just feels slow and lumbering. :(

I’ve never had problems with this car as a daily, right now I need the clutch replaced and though a clutch on a civic would be cheaper I could never drive a stock civic.
