This song had a massive impact on me as a child. I have a great imagination and i always pictures a mini-movie in my head when we were traveling with the music. needless to say this created a very big drama movie with a great ending that sometimes almost makes me cry.
There was actually a TV movie made of this song starring Kenny Rogers which was really good. Another good song by Kenny is “the greatest “. Another good story.
They were Awesome songs and movies... my mother in law had the honor of going to a Kenny Roger's concert backpasses etc as his. Personal guest cuz she helped his nephew in school....
In the US, most everyone loves Kenny. Black, white, young people, older folks. People who love Country, people who love Rap. He was just that talented. He is widely loved and respected. RIP, Kenny. ❤
When he says "this one's for Becky, as he watched the last one fall", it chokes me up, every time. No one advocates bar-room brawls, of course---my husband had a few, before I got ahold of 'im---but, there are times.... I, like someone else, said, am surprised he didn't take a gun---as many times as I've heard this song, I still think, when he says "he reached above the fireplace, and took down his daddy's....", I still think he's gonna say "gun", cuz every house in the South has a gun over the fireplace!!
a side bit about this song there is a group called The Gatlin Brothers who took umbridge with Kenny for being the last name in this song evidently they had a large falling out because of it
I heard that one of the songwriters who had an fallout with the Gatlin Boys is the one who add them in the song, and that Kenny Rogers didn't realize tho who the songwriter was referring to.
I've heard this song countless times and I still get a jolt when he reached above the fireplace and takes down his daddy's...picture. I was raised in South and I too expected him to say "gun".
I love that the two messages of this song are not mutually exclusive. Yes, it better to turn the cheek when you can, bit when it's no longer your cheek to turn then "sometimes you have to fight when you're a man" Every reactor I see with this song at the beginning is like "Yep, great message, turn the cheek!" And then "they took turns at Becky" comes up and suddenly it's all "kill those a-holes" and that is the entire message of the song.
Kenny Rogers is such a great storyteller with his music. He is one of those artists that as a listener you are focusing just as much on the verses as you are on the melody & the singing.
For everyone, there are lines you don't cross. For some it's merely pride, but for most, it's a matter of mess with me and I'm man or woman enough to take it, but mess with my family/friends or weaker, and you've got a fight.
Love Kenny Rogers music from when he was with the First Edition (60's-70's) to his solo career. He was a great story teller in many of his songs like "Coward Of The County" & "The Gambler". He had so many hits "Lucille", "Lady", "Through the Years" etc. He did a lot of duets such as with Kim Carnes "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer", with Sheena Easton "We've Got Tonight" & with Dolly Parton "Islands In The Stream". He also did quite a few duets with Dottie West.
I was raised on country music and Kenny has always been my favorite (along with Dolly). I cried when I found out he died. This song has always given me chills in the best way possible, and I always smile when he says Tommy turned and locked the door, because I know the Gatlin boys are about to get what's coming to them. Lol
Two Kenny videos you have to watch are... 1) SWEET MUSIC MAN live at International Country Festival 2) RUBY, DON'T TAKE YOUR LOVE TO TOWN when he was known as Kenny Rogers & The First Edition. He's young in this video with long hair and an earring. PS I will also suggest the song, THE GREATEST. It's a very sweet song and you will absolutely love the ending!
This is one of my favorites. Another song, Lucille, has that heart wrenching quality. Even as a teenager, I always felt so sad after this was played on the radio.
We lost an amazing talent when we lost Kenny. Love just about all of his songs. They did a marvelous Movie out of this song, Kenny played Tommies Uncle. Absolutely love the last video he did with Home Free, Children Go Where I Send Thee So awesome and his comments at the end.
kenny rogers was in a rock band in the early 70s... i cant remember the bands name but the song i like is ... I just dropped in to see what condition my condition is in
Everything this man has done is pure gold. He used to sing with Dolly a lot and they have a library of music together. Their voices are incredible apart and even more so together. Islands in the Stream, and You Can't Make Old Friends, and then there's Kenny's the Greatest, the Rose, and I can just go on and on.
I was waiting for the look on your face when that change came, then the puzzlement as you tried to figure out where it was going. He was a great ballad singer. One of the all-time greats.
Through the Years, She Believes in Me, and Love Will Turn You Around are my three favourite Kenny songs. I think you'd love all of them. There is another Canadian country band called Emerson Drive that I think you'd love as well. They have a song called Moments - that's almost iconic now. It is super emotional - very deep and impactful with an AMAZING message. Need to watch the official video to get the true meaning. Would LOVE to see your reaction to it. Cheers from Canada!
This song brings back so many memories for me. I come from a musical family. We love to harmonize, play guitars and piano. We sang this a lot when it was on the charts. It is a great one to harmonize with! Kenny Rogers had a great storytelling voice.
How can you not love Kenny Rogers? I always loved that he never shied away from duets or partnering with other groups to bring them into the country fold....like Home Free and Kenny singing "Children Go Where I Send Thee" and then there were all the ladies that he sang with. Thankfully we still have all his music to listen to. He left a HUGE hole in the country music fabric when he passed away. Thanks for the great reaction! Love your channel!!!
I just found your channel thanks to the algorithm. Many reactors do Kenny, but very few do this track, which is my favorite Kenny song. So im happy to find this. And as Sheila Akridge mentioned in her comment, in my childhood, they made a movie based on this track as well as a movie based on his track "the Gambler". And Kenny is the star of both. He's actually a pretty good actor. I've found both movies free right now on Tubi.
The first concert I ever went to when I was a kid was Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton and they were amazing, both separately and together. I would love to see you do a reaction to "You Can't Make Old Friends" by Kenny & Dolly. It's a great song with an even better meaning since Kenny passed away.
I was lucky enough to see him in concert 3 times and he was so good. It seemed so easy for him to just convey the story of the song. Hats off to the incredible songwriters who made us actually see the scene as he sang.
I'm glad you enjoyed this. Another great storyteller you should listen to is Bob Seger. He's not country but more of a crossover between light rock and pop. He has a great voice/singing style that I think you'd enjoy. Shame on the Moon, Hollywood Nights, Night Moves, Turn the Page are just a few of many great songs
LUv, Luv, Luv Kenny Rogers! Growing my sister and I loved to sing Ruben James we would cry our eyes out. Ruby is one of my all time favorites. But everything Kenny does is gold!
I really was hoping this would be the next rogers song you did. my absolute favorite. similar vibe to the gambler by kenny with the whole knowing when to hold em or fold em except this time with knowing when it is right and proper to let into your emotions for the better. great song.
I could tell when you realized what happened to Becky and that you were hoping for the smack down he laid on the Gatlin boys. Like you said about life lessons… There are times and reasons when fighting is the right thing to do.
I think you would enjoy "The Greatest" and "Buy Me a Rose" by Kenny Rogers. They are both songs from his later years, but are lovely Kenny Rogers songs. 😁
Kenny had an amazing story tellers voice! Is daddy tried to living with a great life lesson but everyone was rooting for him to turn around and let the gallons have it! both barrels!! Great Reaction!!
Kenny Rogers was a great talent when it came to story telling. His songs always had a way of drawing you into the stories. In listening, you were immediately able to visualize the story as it unfolded. Another legend in country music is Randy Travis. His song, Three Wooden Crosses, is a great one that shows his ability to tell a story through songs.
Kenny was the best story teller. He asked Home Free to sing "Children go where I send thee" with him. They admire him so much, after his passing they covered Kenny's huge hit "The Gambler". 🥰🥰
The Coward of the County and The Gambler were made for TV movies featuring Kenny. Check out him singing You Can't Make Old Friends with Dolly. Another good one is with Dottie West -- Everytime Two Fools Collide.
Like Sheila said (her comment below) there is a movie that was made of this. Kenny Rogers stars in it as a preacher and Tommy's uncle. There's a side story with him that happens too. It's a good movie.
When he was with the First Edition they were a pop band. Listen to the song Ruby dont take your love to town. He looked amazing with his colored glasses. Wore them til he turned country.
There's another song of his that plays like a movie in my head every time I hear it. "Tomb of the Unknown Love" That's when you know it's a good song when you have a video in your head with just the audio
So sorry to hear this, Laryn! I trust you have been experiencing what love and belonging feels like in a world that can be so painful and evil. If it helps, just know that Righteous Justice is coming, as He Promises in His Word. There is a path that leads to Peace and REST from fear. I pray you know THE Way, THE TRUTH, and THE LIFE (John 14). 💙Hugs and blessings on your day!!
I really love your reactions. You have become my favorite reactor. I saw that look of anger cross your face when you realized what happened to Becky. The other time I saw anger on your face was during Concrete Angel by Martina Mc Bride. I feel your wife and boys are in kind and gentle hands. They are blessed.
Can't go wrong with Kenny Roger's. His raw voice is beautiful and addictive. You don't miss a word when he sings. Another great storyteller is Gordon Lightfoot. His true story of a ship wreck, The Edmund Fitzgerald will hold and consume your attention. Worth checking out. Thanks Craig. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
love this song when you live a life that is not the same as others, you are looked upon as strange. it is like the saying I have heard all my life and cringe at Real Men Dont Cry Baloney knew many who did including my late dad so you dont have to fight all the time to be tough just pick your battles
Next in the storytelling songs by Kenny Rogers should be Lucille and/or Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town. To hear a completely different side of Kenny Rogers, listen to him with the First Edition with their psychedelic Just dropped in. Lots of fun!
Lucille is another good one. An old, funny country song is Harper Valley PTA by Jeannie C. Riley. PTA stands for Parent Teacher Association. You should check that one out. Love your clips!
Kenny was a master storyteller
You are correct, Kenny Rogers was a true class act.
♥ The best thing about country music is the storytelling. All you need is three chords and the truth.
...and a twang---don't forget the twang!! LOL
This song had a massive impact on me as a child. I have a great imagination and i always pictures a mini-movie in my head when we were traveling with the music. needless to say this created a very big drama movie with a great ending that sometimes almost makes me cry.
Chase rice has a song titled that...it's pretty good
Maybe he would like Big John and King if the Road ..
The difference is the words, “to be a man” and “when you’re a man”
Three things a wise man fears:
- A moonless night
- A storm at sea
- The anger of a quiet man
The Gatlin boys learned that lesson
There was actually a TV movie made of this song starring Kenny Rogers which was really good. Another good song by Kenny is “the greatest “. Another good story.
I second that suggestion. The Greatest is one of my favorites.
I use to get on my rocking horse racing to help him 😁
it's here on RUclips I watched some yrs back on here.
I used to love that movie
They were Awesome songs and movies... my mother in law had the honor of going to a Kenny Roger's concert backpasses etc as his. Personal guest cuz she helped his nephew in school....

@@kevinsharpjr interesting I do know from an interview Kenny gave that the song caused a rift between him and the guys
I've heard this song countless times and I still get a jolt when he reached above the fireplace and takes down his daddy's...picture. I was raised in South and I too expected him to say "gun".
I love that the two messages of this song are not mutually exclusive. Yes, it better to turn the cheek when you can, bit when it's no longer your cheek to turn then "sometimes you have to fight when you're a man"

A classic tale of ‘F#%k around and find out’ for the Gatlin boys.
Kenny Rogers is such a great storyteller with his music. He is one of those artists that as a listener you are focusing just as much on the verses as you are on the melody & the singing.
I'm loving your reactions and comments to Kenny Rogers singing ( The Coward of the County)!.❤
When Kenny died a part of country music died with him. It was because of him (and Glenn Campbell) that made me fall in love with country music
Nobody can tell a story as good as Kennedy Roger’s . Gust love his voice thanks for great reaction
For everyone, there are lines you don't cross. For some it's merely pride, but for most, it's a matter of mess with me and I'm man or woman enough to take it, but mess with my family/friends or weaker, and you've got a fight.
You don't have to fight to be a man but sometimes you have to fight when you're a man. As a woman, this is my favourite lesson in this song.

Lady.... Gets me every time
Thank you for reacting to this one. "Lucille" should be the next one...that tells a story too.
He's a great story teller. Very nice reaction 🥰🥰🥰
No one could sing a story like Kenny ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Everything this man has done is pure gold. He used to sing with Dolly a lot and they have a library of music together. Their voices are incredible apart and even more so together. Islands in the Stream, and You Can't Make Old Friends, and then there's Kenny's the Greatest, the Rose, and I can just go on and on.
Grew up listening to Kenny Rogers, great American story teller through music. He was truly legendary in his own time.
I was waiting for the look on your face when that change came, then the puzzlement as you tried to figure out where it was going. He was a great ballad singer. One of the all-time greats.

This song was not just played on country music stations. It was also played on pop/rock stations and top 40 stations in the 1980s.
Jerry Reed singing Amos Moses. You will love it.
I was lucky enough to see him in concert 3 times and he was so good. It seemed so easy for him to just convey the story of the song. Hats off to the incredible songwriters who made us actually see the scene as he sang.
Great storytelling...one of my moms favorites. RIP Mom.

This is a fantastic song and you can actually see it.... they did make a movie of this one.
Loved this song as a kid. This was very popular at school.
I love the story in his song “The Greatest”
The Gambler is my favorite of his!
You know it's a great song when it inspires a movie. Harper Valley PTA, Ode to Billy Joe, Coward of the County, and 9-5 are just a few great examples!
This song is fire 🔥 FACTS. GO KENNY
You said it felt like a film in your ears. They made a movie from this song.
I could tell when you realized what happened to Becky and that you were hoping for the smack down he laid on the Gatlin boys. Like you said about life lessons… There are times and reasons when fighting is the right thing to do.
Thanks for your reaction--I always loved Kenny Rogers.
Country music has and always had great storytellers, Kenny Rogers, Tom T. Hall, etc.
Kenny was one of the greatest
Some songs don't need a avideo. Thank you for the reactiom. Hadn't herd that song in about 20 years, Cheers!
Yes, He was !!!
You got yourself a new subscriber thank you for understanding what true country Is
I absolutely love this song 🥰
I think you would enjoy "The Greatest" and "Buy Me a Rose" by Kenny Rogers. They are both songs from his later years, but are lovely Kenny Rogers songs. 😁

I just found you. And I’m glad I did. I love your reactions!! Keep up the good work. Much love from Texas!!!
A great story line! Great song!
but me a rose by Kenny is a often overlooked song
This was another one that crossed into what was called “soft rock” in the “70’s.
The Coward of the County and The Gambler were made for TV movies featuring Kenny. Check out him singing You Can't Make Old Friends with Dolly. Another good one is with Dottie West -- Everytime Two Fools Collide.
Yes they actually made a movie from this song and he's in the movie and yes he can act too! I just love this song and what a great react ❣
Like Sheila said (her comment below) there is a movie that was made of this. Kenny Rogers stars in it as a preacher and Tommy's uncle. There's a side story with him that happens too. It's a good movie.

As a rape survivor, when the song starts, my stomach always rolls. I love his voice and Tommy not turning his cheek. But this song hits hard.

I can’t hit like because of what happened. Peace and continued healing.
I wish I could give a thousand likes for this reaction, this is my favorite Kenny song. 2nd is Long Arm of the Law third is Lady.
20 years ago was another great kenny rogers song
Just because a man avoids fighting.. doesn’t mean he wont fight! Underestimate a man at your own peril! Good for tommy!👍🥴 dan. 5/19/22
The song The Gambler,
Was made into a series of movies which Kenny Stared in.
They made a movie of this song in the 80s. Also the Gambler and a great one called Six Pack
The song most associated with SixPack is Love Will Turn You Around.
I am new to channel bro thank you for giving a great reaction to 2 years song I'm going to follow
Enjoyed your reaction as usual..another great song of Kenny's you may enjoy is LUCILLE
❤️ Kenny
I know all music has a story but Country music is steeped in story telling and even when it's not a pretty story it's told anyway.
Check out "The Baseball Song" by Kenny Rogers.
There is actually a movie that goes with the song (same name)and Kenny is Tommy's uncle in it.Its worth watching
Life lessons for every boy and man.
Amen 🙏🏽✝️♥️💯...
Kenny Rogers favorites, " Through the Years" "Islands in the Stream" with Dolly Parton, and "Long Arm of the Law."
love this song when you live a life that is not the same as others, you are looked upon as strange. it is like the saying I have heard all my life and cringe at Real Men Dont Cry Baloney knew many who did including my late dad so you dont have to fight all the time to be tough just pick your battles
There is a movie that Kenny Rogers played the uncle. The Coward of the County. Great movie.
The greatest is up
There is a movie based on this song, and Kenny is in it
Another Kenny Rogers song with a good story is Reuben James.
Next in the storytelling songs by Kenny Rogers should be Lucille and/or Ruby Don't
