    Kenny Rogers is one of the greatest all time story tellers in music history. He also was the lead of a pop band in the 70s called Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. You should check out What Condition my Condition Was In

    They turned this into a made-for-TV movie starring Kenny as Tommy's uncle.

    Another great story teller. Red Sovein. TEDDY BEAR, ROSES FOR MAMA. and yes 70s just hut different, so diversity era

      Sovine, not Sovein. Red was interesting in that he didn't really sing songs, he narrated them...a literal storyteller.

    There is a man who was known as Red Sovine who did more of a spoken word song called 'Teddy Bear' that was from C.B. radio days when trucking songs were popular. There are several he did that had pretty good stories behind them.

  • @johoney5458

    A good life lesson. Favorite line is "you could have heard a pin drop when Tommy stopped and locked the door.' As clear as a bell when that was said. As clear as Hardy's line "wait in the truck". You just know it is "fixin" to be handled.

    Oh, wow. I'd completely forgotten about this song. I heard it when I was a little kid. Loved it - not only because of the gentleness of Kenny Roger's voice and his wonderful way of story telling but because my dad grew up rough in the South being very poor and w/out a dad (apparently my grandpa was not a nice man and actually died in jail). And, while my dad was a big man, trying to be a better man than his own dad, we saw him turn the other cheek in tough situations more than once. Respect. Glad I came across your video. Watching your reaction to it brought back feelings of the first time I heard it myself.

    Country singers are the BEST at story telling. There are so many GREATS to choose from if you don't listen to country regularly. I grew up on on 60's & 70's country and came back to it in the 90's. I had a little rebellion in the 80's, but country is still my all time favorite 😁

    I like how you noticed the way the first and last lines of the song, while they were the exact same words in the exact same order, changed their meaning drastically. At the beginning of the song, they were just a description of how the people around Tommy saw him. At the end of the song, those same words were used to describe how they USED to see him, and that they know far better now.

    Kenny had a lot of great songs but this one will always be one of my favorites for the sheer story telling. Tommy's dad did not want him fighting because he was in prison for killing a guy in a bar fight and didn't want Tommy going to prison as well.

    His dad "died in prison." And he had the chance to meet Tommy and tell him "son, my life is over," so it wasn't some jail fight or other sudden cause. He was getting the chance to see his family before being executed. Which means he killed someone. The implication is that he did it in some fit of temper or ego, and did not want the same tendency to get his son into the same position.

    These days you''d never get away with singing a song about rape.

    • @OriginalLictre
      @OriginalLictre 7 месяцев назад +4

      Kenny Rogers didn't sing a song about rape, he sang about how a young man grew peacefully, and was forced to respond to the rape of a loved one. The sexual assault wasn't dwelt on, or even crudely mentioned.
