    In this video I explain how to use gated reverb to achieve the classic Phil Collins 80's snare sound. This technique is really simple and is a great method on achieving big 80s drum sounds!

  • @steveswag215
    @steveswag215 7 лет назад +1

    Would you recommend using this with drummer too? Great video btw!

    • @SyllixMusic
      @SyllixMusic  7 лет назад +3

      Sure. You'd get the best results if you applied this to only snares and toms... or maybe kicks if it's blended nicely... probably won't sound very good on an entire loop with hihats and such. If using on more than one drum, you'll need to copy the reverb bus for each different drum you want to apply the effect to, and make sure that each noise gate is side chained to it's own drum. Thanks for watching!

      Honestly you can use any drum kit and apply this technique. Lots of drum kits are available online too either for free or for purchase, try searching '80s drum kits' and see what you can find. The reverb technique really adds to that big snare sound though! Good luck!

  • @BlueGuise9
    @BlueGuise9 2 года назад

    Cool tutorial!
    Although I never understood why the effects are put on a bus on not directly on the track?
    Doesn't that just over-complicate things?

    • @SyllixMusic
      @SyllixMusic  2 года назад +4

      Quite the opposite. Sure you could load your favourite reverb on every single track. What if you have 100 tracks? That's 100 instances of that reverb plugin. Using a bus allows you to send multiple tracks to the same effect. It makes it easy to send groups of instruments to the same type of effect and also saves you cpu power.

    • @musicbyshooty
      @musicbyshooty 2 года назад

      @@SyllixMusic that's right! But what about the sidechain? Let's assume I need to gate more than one instrument track to the same effect (bus). I know Logic does not have an actual sidechain functions if not within' plugins, so I can't see a way to perhaps gate the same reverb for the snare, to a rimshot, as the noise gate is already sidechain to the snare track. How would you achieve the result? Can you make a rundown of the process, cause I believe I am missing something to improve this technique to multiple tracks of my mix

  • @nounix

    Hi! Can you tell me how I duplicate a channel strip WITH the automations/effects from the original channel? Meaning, I have an audio channel in which I have some reverbs, delays etc applied to it - now I want to make a new audio channel, right below it, and in this new channel I want to make, I want EVERYTHING copied to it from the first channel! (I can then delete the audio regions in the new channel, so whatever other audio regions I will then import to the new channel will apply the exact same reverbs etc to them). Thanks!!

  • @austinduran3557

    Is it better to send tracks to the bus?
    I’m thinking it wouldn’t slow down the computer • but actually help it
    I don’t usually send tracks to the bus

    • @SyllixMusic
      @SyllixMusic  3 года назад

      it depends really. I'll usually send similar sounds to a bus if I want to treat them all together, such as all the drums. Or may I have multiple guitar parts, I may want to send them all to the "guitar" bus and throw a glue compressor or EQ on rather than a compressor and EQ on each individual track. Reverb is also great as a send effect. Helps save cpu power and is great to have several instruments with a similar reverb. Of course I'll always say, there are no rules! If it sounds good, it is good!

  • @michaos1

    How do you side chain with midi tracks and notes of a specific pitch (e.g. C1, D1)? You can't sidechain midi, right? Oh, I know how, you assign drum designer to multi output, send these drum sounds to aux and then sidechain this aux, bingo! I hate fiddling with audio regions when I actually work with samples.

    • @SyllixMusic
      @SyllixMusic  5 лет назад

      Or bounce in place and use the audio track as your side chain.

      They're from a sample pack,not sure which one. I think they're live recorded samples though. And then I processed them with eq, compression, reverb, and also sent them to a drum bus for further processing and saturation.

    Great video, cheers! By any chance do you know if it is possible to achieve this when using a multi-output ultrabeat? Only the primary ultrabeat channel is available as a sidechain, not any of the aux drums.

    • @SyllixMusic
      @SyllixMusic  5 лет назад

      I'm not sure, I never use ultrabeat. You could probably finalize your drum pattern and export to a single audio track and use that as your side chain. However I find best results come from using a single transient / drum sound. Good luck!

    • @SyllixMusic
      @SyllixMusic  4 года назад +1

      I typically don't use reverb on kicks at all. Kick drums are low frequency sounds and putting reverb on them would result in a muddy low end. You could try it and see how it sounds, depending on the type of kick you're using, but in my opinion it might be best to just try a different kick sound. Cheers!
