    UPDATE:
Since we wrote and animated this video, the Russian advance in Severodonetsk has accelerated. According to the governor of Luhansk, Russian forces now control 70% of Severodonetsk, and Ukrainian forces have retreated to defensive positions in western Severodonetsk and Lysychansk, which is still under Ukrainian control.

You should point out that the river runs through the city, so in this case, Russia is really facing another attempted river crossing while Ukrainian forces are using the typography to build defensive lines. And in most likely, the Ukrainians are withdrawing in good order.

Moral of this post, it's not ideal to make frontline conclusion videos while fog of war is thick, from daily reports Ukraine reinforcements that is holding the line is bending and bending, and the counterattack through the river at Kherson Oblast is called off after huge casualties. Russia is stalling in advances, but Ukraine is losing more reserves and people to plug the gap. Ukraine's apc's and trucks are already wiped out. and optimistic "we are repelling attacks" tone of Ukraine high command are now reporting their daily posts as "Russians are attacking x and y" and the reported big defeats on Russian units are no longer reported since Izyum breakthrough. Don't know with with these reports who is winning

The problem is that Ukraine simply can not accept to lose more land.
A lot of those territories are extremely important for Ukraine's economy so giving up on them would hurt the country a lot in the future.
There is also the obvious problem that, if Putin can come out from this conflict as a winner he may invade Ukraine again in few years (which is exactly what happened in this case after he managed to take Crimea with almost no resistance).

The myth of “rich east poor west” is outdated. There’s huge IT industry in western and central Ukraine, which grew 5-10 years ago, and brings a lot more money than outdated mines and steel plants. This is the reason why UAH fell 200% in 2014 war, but fell only 20% in 2022 war, despite the latter being far more destructive and total, Ukraine already gave up on relying on industry of eastern Ukraine

it could also mean Ukraine is in position to make it very costly for russia by using only a token resources, land can be retaken. Better to make the other guy die for their country. An important thing to understand about Severodonetsk AND Lysychansk is that those twin cities are separated by Siverskyi Donets river. Russians will eventually seize Severodonetsk but in order to seize Lysychansk, and hence capture the entire Luhansk region (which is their primary goal), they will need to cross the river which didn't go well for them last time when they tried to do so near the village of Bilohorivka where they lost about 70 vehicles and 400 men.

      2. Putin also banned all opposition parties, and part of the reason the Ukrainian government was pushed to do the same (not a move I agree with regardless) was due to Russian aggression.
      3. I would like to hear some specific instances of Zelenski handing out weapons to serial killers?
      4. Zelenski is literally Jewish first of all, second, as I mentioned before, groups like the Azov Battalion were only integrated into the military due to Russian aggression, and even then their ideals are still a fringe belief in Ukraine. Prior to the war, they HAD such safety guarantees, not just from the US, but _also_ from Russia, as a condition of Ukraine turning over their own nukes. Clearly Russia violated that, and the US did not fully live up to their commitment to defend Ukraine, for sad but understandably pragmatic reasons. I feel like only the NATO Article 5 would be enough to protect them at this point. Or at least something a bit stronger than just a pledge from the US.

While I think Ukraine could hurt Putin badly, and drive them off for a bit, lead to a "peace deal," if the only thing holding it together is Putin's promise to not invade again, then it will never last. The minute they get the Russian forces back across the border they will start plans for "Invade Ukraine 2," and start building up their forces in preparation for that. You need to define winning. It's a war of attrition. If Russia is suffering heavy losses compared to Ukraine trying to take strategically insignificant towns, then it is a case of losing smaller battles to win the bigger war. The ground Russia is taking are bombed out villages, that they then later need to hold indefinitely.
Ukraine knows Putin has personally ordered the taking of Severodonetsk and the generals have no choice except to throw everything they have at it. Therefore Ukraine are making their withdrawal as slow and painful as possible for the Russians. It's a smart tactic.

Secondly, Ukraine has dug its heels in as far as peace talks are concerned and rightly so. This is their war, and only Ukraine has a right to say when they will ask for peace. European nations refusing to aid Ukraine are doing so because of economic reasons, not wanting to face the prospects of finally weaning themselves off Russian energy dependence. Not only is this short-sighted, but it is also the same logic of appeasement that led to Hitler taking more and more land which fully triggered WW2. I think another point important to highlight is that the Russian command chain is getting decimated. I'm not at all an expert in military command structure so I am not completely sure what it means, but from what I understood, Russian army had a lack of "medium level officers" from the start, that was just the way it was organized. But as "low level officers" keep getting killed on the field, higher officers need to get to the Frontline to effectively do the job of medium command chain. This puts them at risk, and they keep getting killed themselves. There are frequent reports about this.
As such, from what I understood again, this means that it's becoming harder and harder for Russian command to keep control of its army. So not only it's becoming less effective, but dissidence and disobedience are getting harder to repress. That doesn't sound like a good thing on the long term, for them.
But please, someone who understands this topic better, comment to better explain the situation and its concrete implication.

EDIT: They could try to force orcs to fight at gun point... but soldiers literally took out grenade and said ''Try it, we'll die together!'' If they try to force them, rebellion will become even more likely.

A little surprised by some of the details of this video. Based on the latest I've been reading from Ukraine, Russia seems to be gaining momentum. The fighting has become extremely intense, and Ukrainian forces have been having more and more issues resisting the relentless artillery assaults we've been seeing so much of in this war. No, there are less large-scale maneuvers at the moment, but that is just the current state of the conflict right now. But Russia seems to be whittling away at the Ukrainian resistance, and the number of daily casualties on the side of Ukraine is very high.
EDIT: Sorry I didn't see the pinned comment.

This is the war in which tanks became obsolete. The russians never had any tanks that could withstand direct artillery hits on the top deck, and the combination of artillery with drones that can observe the shell falls from fifty meters overhead means that Ukraine's artillery accuracy is nearly perfect. A Russian invader is far safer on foot than he is in a tank,
Putin can dig another thouaand tanks out of the museums, and if they can run at all, the only purpose they'll serve is to show the Ukranians where they can kill four russians with each hit.
Even if pewtin eventually throws enough cannon fodder into the fight to overwhelm Ukraine in the next year, he's done catastrophic damage to Russia. The young people streaming out of russia since his crimes in Crimea, and fleeing as we speak won't be coming back. Russia's demographic crisis has beem moved up by at least fifty years, due to pewtin's ego, power lust, ignorance, and incompetence.

The best part about the russian mechanized assult however is that the tanks they are brining out of retirement are also lacking in many key parts, so once they do get to the front, a ton of them typically wont work, or many more usually will not be able to run long due to the damage sustained through their retirement, and also since russia can't get the parts it needs anymore for these vehicles it would not be surprising if the number of vehicles they do have available to pull out of retirement is ever shrinking as they gut others for the parts to repair the others, not only that but russian assults being in waves like this makes them very very predictable, so while they halt advances and then escalate again, that must be due to how many vehicles they need to bring in before beginning their assaults, such predictability would allow Ukrainian forces to endlessly push back after each wave, or cause more damage to the mainland of russia, which coukd cause a catastrophic amount of holdup on the russian side, especially if the Ukrainians can begin targeting the russian railway systems in russia that help lead troops and armor to the front, which is surprising they haven't done yet.
It also would not be surprising if Putin and his communist regime dont even plan to really repair the damages they caused to the Ukrainian cities, and especially if their entire economy collapses doing so, considering the amount of money in repairs for the damages caused, both militarily, and infrastructurally is in my rough estimations in the trillions of dollars or more, something russia and possibly not even the Oligarchs themselves could help or hope to pay off, especially now that 90% of all that they had in banks around the world were frozen or confiscated by the world. Making alot of Oligarchs in russia poorer than the government itself now. But again, the damages done to every city they've bombed, mortar'd, airstriked, missile barraged, and cluster bombed, will cost trillions if dollars in repairs, but also the destruction to the farmlands will take ages to fix due to mortar fire, missiles and such, needing to shovel out debris and some still active shells, especially from cluster munitions.
Its also disgusting to me how France, Germany and the others against the war are choosing to try and win over the affections of the tyrant by kissing his ass and requesting a ceasefire or trying to force a peace agreement cause you know the reason their doing it is because they need or want Daddy Putins Oil and gas rather than to look for alternative means of getting it....it honestly disgusts me that they would rather kiss the boots of the tyrant than to help free a nation in strife by letting it fight back against its oppressor. While some still are, its clear they want the war to end so they can have their gas back or oil without needing to pay in rubles or make it obvious they themselves are tyrants cloaked in shadow not ready yet to strike.

Western Europeans have become comfortable living in free democratic countries and have forgotten that freedom was achieved through blood and sacrifice. We Americans lost half million of our soldiers for your sovereignty and freedom and this is how you show support to your allies? It's a shame that they are still hesitant when US called all of Putin's bluffs about Finland and nuclear weapons, escalation is just an excuse for western Europeans so they don't have to pay a little more money for gas and oil at the cost of Ukrainian sovereignty.

I've seen tankies admit T-62s are being shipped into Ukraine, they claim it is for second line troops and peacekeeping in occupied areas rather than frontline use but considering that pre-war Russia had 2,000-3,000 operational tanks and have at least 750 confirmed losses (likely 1,000 or more real ones) with basically no means of producing replacements (The total lifetime yearly average production for the T-72 is about 400 per year and with sanctions the current ability to produce replacements is likely well below 100). Having lost between 1/4 and 1/3rd of their entire tank stocks in just 3 months means that Russia is on pace to be entirely tankless by the end of the year. I wouldn't be surprised to see them resort to T-34s by Fall.

Also, Severdonetsk is essentially taken, centre was reached days ago. Chechens were mopping up and informing the civilians, they walk to the centre administrative building. Severdonetsk isn't 'small' it leads to Lysychansk that leads to Slovyansk and also has connections to most highways in that are, they lead everywhere.
