Really enjoy all of Matts video. I'm 76 years old and really got into turkey hunting just last year. Got my first E Idaho Turkey then, and Matt's videos are a treasure. Matt seem like a guy you could call 'Friend' on any hunt
Ding ding!!! Helped me bring a nice Tom in for my first day mentor hunt in PA. I'm getting better with the mouth call but not able to shoot myself used your soft call and purrs on slate. Son uses seated vest and sat in front between my legs with a big oak supporting me shielding ny movement. Stepped out about 30 yards. I am sure you have helped more people than you know!!!
This will be my 46th season. Here are some tips: Turkeys roost high up and can see and hear you for a long distance, especially if there's not much foliage. If you let them bust you from the roost you have no chance on that particular bird for a few days. Don't call to a turkey on the roost. If you do they will expect you to come to them, If a real turkey doesn't come to them they will spook. Listen for the fly down before calling. Call soft and infrequent. Hens don't yelp as much as you might think, learn to purr, putt and cluck. The hardest part is sitting still for a long time. If there's you have a bird going and he's coming closer don't expect him to appear from the direction you're looking. If he's quiet for a while don't be surprised if he gobbles from behind you. Pattern your shotgun and know it's limits. 30 yards is the perfect time to shoot. The shot pattern at around 30 is wide but still dense with sufficient energy to kill. I missed one last spring at 12 steps. It's easy to miss at close range even for experienced shooters. Dale has sound, practical advice that a lot of other channels aren't sharing because they just want to sell calls. Good luck.
Craig H. Good advice! Especially about the turkey is coming in. They love to circle you they will gobble in front of you right where you expect then 20 mins later you’ll hear him crunching leaves to your 5 o clock. Patience kills turkeys!
Just my second year of Turkey hunting, this was a good practical approach of bringing a gobbler in, several times I've experienced the "gone quiet" bird, thanks again, very helpful.
Thank you for this video. You helped me figure out how I screwed up on a gobbler last year. Exact scenario except I kept calling full blast so he stayed just out of gun range. If I had called softly I now think he would have closed the distance. I wish I had found this video back in '18.
Just started watching your videos. Would have to say I’ve been able to take my calling to the next level because of it. Have gotten two birds here in Wisconsin one in a snowstorm. And one working his way back to roost. That’s for putting the videos together.
I appreciate all your information. Live in Northern Ontario. And our turkey population is just starting to come back. I deer hunt up here and moose hunt in the same way that you turkey hunt. This will be my first year. I find your videos fantastic
Got my box call was playing with it for the first time and it brought in a group of descent birds in Indiana last September so I hope I can do the same here back home in New Mexico. Thank you
I decided this year I needed to start hunting outside my normal. This year is birds. Turkey and ducks. Turkey seems so easy but so hard. Went out for the first time this year and the season is still going so I'm a man on a mission and your videos with my already woodsman skills makes me think it's when not if I'll be successful. Thank you
Awesome video, I'm new to Turkey hunting and starting out with the box call. I have been trying to figure out how to make it sound good and your video just help me big time.
These particular tips helped me kill my first spring gobbler this past year. For my first gobbler ever he was 25lbs 6” beard and 1 1/4” spurs on public land. Thanks Dale for the awesome content!
Thank u for all of your wisdom and knowledge on these gobblers!! Well appreciated brother good luck to u out there, I’ll be on the hunt for them next week 🦃
This is great tutorial and I give it a try. I harvested three turkeys last year including a 22lb gobbler. One thing, I personally feel like seating this way and being too open is probably not very good idea. Because last Friday I did seat similar way under a wide tree and managed to call in an average maybe 3yo gobbler, the beard was 5..6 inches. There was an open field between me and him. I was watching that turkey in binocular to come out of brush 200yds away from me. He didn't make a sound to reply but was walking slowly making short stops to pick something from the ground on his way. I stopped calling when he was about 150 yds away. I slowly put my binocular down and shotgun up on my knee then freezed up. I wear full camo. There was a mesh mask on my face, gloves, etc. Also there was a bit of old grass at 6 ft in front of me very thin though. The tom has stopped about 70 yds in front of me. Looked carefully then turned leftward and moved same slow pace into the nearest brush. I tried to call it softly, couple of times, but no luck - he is gone. This turkey has clearly busted me. And I will never seat like that again.
I need your teachings as audio files to listen to while hunting. It would be nice if the birds would pause mid strut in case I need to rewind and review. 😂
I liked the video Dale. Can you make some videos for other types of game to hunt before and after Turkey? Would like to see your thoughts on squirrel, rabbit and hog hunting
Another great video Matt. Very good information. One thing I noticed. O gloves or face mask think he might have seen a glare possible? Great job and congrats on the big one!
Kevin Burnett I left them in the truck by accident. Nah, he wasn't spooked. Just acting nervous. I've killed many without a mask. I use them just didn't have it with me. He was a subordinate turkey
It would be helpful to know the elapsed time from the point of locating the bird through to the end when he walks past. I've let them go past (out of range) then moved to a spot that they just traveled through, then changed to a different call. I also believe going silent after a while works on hung up birds. Some valuable lessons here. Thanks.
Great video. Any tips for late season Virginia turkeys on public land? Super greened up here now and the birds are smarter this late in the season. I feel like it is a matter of time before I get one to act right, just trying to get into the woods as much a possible to make it happen.
Thanks for the video! Let's me know I'm on the right track in my thinking. One scenario I've had that really weirds me out is when I'm in the locating phase and a gobbler (usually a jake) comes flying in and lights in a tree within sight range (100yds +). I feel like I'M the one being hunted! Is there anything you can do in that situation other than wait it out? And would the pecking order have anything to do with that behavior? Maybe he's looking to avoid a butt kicking from a big Tom? I know that's no guarantee there IS a big Tom in the area, only that he's scoping it out. It's happened to me twice and I came up empty both times.
Hey dale ! Live your videos but i am a 30 plus yr turkey hunter myself. I have learned more from the turkeys themselves than from anything else. I want to ask why you didnt have your headnet and gloves on?
That particular day I left my face mask in my truck and I was with the camera man in his truck. But I’ve shot many turkeys Without one. I try to have one with me but it’s not something I won’t hunt without. I’ve killed them without one
Thanks Dale. Even with what you said your video was good. I couldn't tell where it was pausing. Here's a question, why do you not wear a mask and gloves??
Jerry Miller I do, just forgot them that particular evening in the truck. Didn't realize it till I set down and reached for my mask. But I've killed alot of turkeys without them.. most the time I just pull my cap on down lower when I don't have one.. and the problem with the video was fixed after I made this video.
Matt,if you have time-- let me know what you think of my 2nd Spring Turkey Hunting video. Put in-- Calling Gobblers In With Proven Older Callers. I had this info years ago and wanted to finally upload it to Utube.
Dont you wear gloves and a headnet or facemask? That could be why the gobbler didnt come in. Say the qhite of your hands and face. Just my opinion matt. Love your videos!!!
Great Turkey hunter, but one question, why do we see people hunting more and more with no face mask or gloves on? That was really a No No thirty years ago. Just sayin’.
My mask this particular day was in the truck and we took another vehicle to the place we hunted so I Left it by accident. But I also have killed a lot with no mask.. It helps but it's not a must to kill turkeys. Just set still and don't move. It worked before facemask it will still work today
Really enjoy all of Matts video.

So nice to see videos and tips from a down to earth guy instead of the tv “experts “ and also a guy who huts public land like most of us.
Thanks Matt
Great video work ,like the layout great job on the bird 👍🦃👊
I’m about to embark on my first turkey hunt this April. Very helpful tips! I’ll definitely be using some of the techniques you suggested
