When to Call and not to call to a Gobbler during a TURKEY HUNT

  • There's sometimes when you need to call working a gobbler and get agressive and sometimes when you need to not call at all. calling at the wrong time can mess up a hunt and not calling enough can also turn your hunt into a non successful day.

I like the fact we are being taught how. Many are showing doing, but not why or why not. Then turn to a huge sale pitch. I understand there is a need. Things cost to do. Thanks for not doing infocommercal.

Mr. Dale, I’ve been hunting turkey for 40+ years. I’ve made many, many mistakes when working a turkey. Experience is a great teacher but it sure is frustrating in the moment. You are doing a great service to not only inexperienced turkey hunters but also us old timers. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. 👍

Absolutely! I’ve never had more fun than working a gobbler in the spring woods. I’ve enjoyed many hunts when I walked out of the woods empty handed. It’s not harvesting a turtle that’s the real reward. It’s spending time in the woods trying to trick them into shooting distance. Even if you don’t get one to take home, it’s still the best time I’ve spent in the woods.

Just started practicing on an old Lynch Box I found in an elderly widow basement while helping her with her plumbing. Her husband was a Turkey hunter and wanted me to have it. She said he had bagged many turkeys over the year’s with that box call. I’m listening to videos on how to hunt and subscribed to your channel in hopes of learning how to call. Thanks for your videos.

Needless to say, turkey wins this hunt, I get to try again on May 6th

I had an Eastern wait 55 minutes before coming in. - He was on the roost gobbling, I was 125 yards away, he flew down & began mating hen after hen. After about 2 hours he walked off toward the North. - That was my chance to get into position. I tip-toed up a hollow using the steep bank on each side for cover.
When I got to where he was gobbling & mating hens I saw an old dead tree. I scratched a place, being easy, trying to sound like a turkey. Once in a sitting position I hit a loud cut on a double reeve. He answered within seconds approx. 300 yards to the North. I put the callers away & just waited.
He never gobbled again until he was right where he flew down, 30 yards in front of me..... BOOM! ~ Led in the head, gobbler took a ride in my truck. 24-lbs. 12" beard, & 1-1/4" spurs. ... I got in his safe place & made a believer out of him, he came back but sure took his time.
On another hunt I had to sit motionless for 2-hours while the gobbler stood looking toward me the whole time until he broke & came another 20 yards before I got him... you gotta love it!

I had two hens and three Toms across a property line in 2017 hunting in Minnesota. I did everything I could to agitate the the hens and after 40 minutes they came looking for me and the Toms followed ! I killed a gobbler with 5 beards totaling over 26 inches and the bird scored 90.25. Not a high score by national standards, but it is for Minnesota.

Last season I called in a 2 year old gobbler . Before season i watched that bird interact with other Jake's and Tom's... when the Tom's or Jake's got a little ways away from the hens hed try to sneak in and breed a hen . So on the opener I was pretty sure I'd call him in bc he was by himself and I did he cone in I have a lay down hen and a strutter decoy out . I used them bc I was huntibg a cut bean field didnt have woods to hunt . So he came in and looked up at 70 yards I was hitting him with a few calls here and there when I could tell he was losing interest . He skirted me to the left staying at 70 then came back to the right at 70 . He was waiting for the decoys to separate so he could sneak in of course it didnt happen and he tucked his wings and was going to leave so I hit him with the sink every time I called loud hed Gobble like hell he liked it loud ... for 7 minutes I called non stop literally I thought I was going to start a fire with that striker... I was using my slate bc he liked it . 7 mins straight I hammered that call hed gobble and take a step my way ... gobble take a step ... I inched him in from 70 to my max range of 50 and dusted him . But I'm not kidding i burnt that call up i was non stop calling literally bc every time i stopped he lost interest and was going to walk away . This was an instinctive reaction he just couldnt help it . Smoked him and then smoked a cigar! 😉🦃

Good tips Matt. Best piece of advice I’ve learned from you is when you want to get up and move, wait 30 more minutes. This has worked for me the last 3 years. We all have that voice in our heads to get up and move if we aren’t seeing anything. Just wait another half hour. Turkey’s aren’t always vocal, and new hunters may get impatient. Just have the discipline to sit 30 more minutes. You will be amazed at your success.

Learned the hard way just as you described. Three nice Toms strutting in place 130 yards away across cut corn field. Calling and calling trying to get them off a hen that one gobbler mounted. I didn't have decoys with me that day. Yesterday talked with those three again and when they came running I shut it down until they turned their backs at 55 yards upon seeing decoys but no sound. Hit them with a mouth call and they immediately turned back towards my decoys. Dropped the biggest one (I think) at 42 yards. I called in another flock of hens off the hillside behind us. We had birds all around us it was crazy. When the two groups of hens found each other I guess they found that annoying hen cause they all shut up. We had 20 plus birds within 30 yards. We never could get a good ethical shot on the Tom. But still amazing hunt

Great video Matt. Been watching you for several years. I have tried aggressive calls on a few hung up gobblers before. Every so often I can get them to come in. Not often, but sometimes. What also has happened to me is on occasion I end up calling in a completely different Turkey I never knew was there, that never called at all. Last time it happened was a couple of years ago a mature Tom I was calling to had hens and wasn’t leaving them. Got aggressive and after a few back and forth conversations, I hear a different bird spitting and drumming directly behind me. Ended harvesting that bird. That is why Turkey hunting is so fun and challenging. Thanks for the content, keep it coming. Good luck this season.

Yesterday I took a young hunter hunting and we got into this field and struck up some birds on the neighboring property, it is late season here is TN and normally I would soft call , but this time I did a lot of cutting added with long sequences of yelps and it wasn’t long 2 Tom’s came under the fence and came right in our laps and the hunter was able to harvest his first bird!

What’s your hunt to harvest ratio? I’m trying to define what an expert turkey hunter is.

I hunt a river and I’ve had em where I “throw the kitchen sink at em” but then they come flying over and shut up and never seen em again. I’m sure it’ll happen again so when they don’t come right over then what do you do

If you come in at sunrise a little too late and the birds are fired up in the tree and you accidentally push them off and they fly about 150 yards to another tree what do you do ?

Thanks for your advice. I listened to a video about how a hen will go to the Tom. I did that Tuesday morning I moved 3 times. He answered hen box call but also I did the Tom call on the box sitting at a creek but he was across and would go crazy off my gobble call. Never saw him but I had another Tom come in behind me up on a ridge. I saw him at 75 yards but could not get a shot. I was going there to start on the ridge but made a bad choice. I’m learning but was blessed to hear a total of 3 birds. I’ll try again. Hopefully I will get my first Tom tomorrow on Friday. I’ve been messed up with sinus trouble last couple days. Feeling better now. Thanks for your sharing the videos. God bless.

I've sealed the deal a few times with a half dozen oddly spaced out feeding putts and leaf scratching. Pretty much anything after the morning gravel pick.

I FINALLY sealed the deal on a little young bird with my crossbow yesterday. Wanted to thank you ,these videos had a HUGE part in my success and I cant tell you how much i appreciate it.
I literally blew it with 20...25? Birds over the last several years , for every reason you can think of. Sticking one yesterday, rates up with what i feel is one of my greatest sporting accomplishments. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this video. I’m really glad you talked about how to call when a turkey is on the other side of a fence on a neighbor’s property. Everything I’ve been told and read has said to stop calling once a gobbler is approaching, and I’ve had 3 situations in the last couple days where gobblers have hung up on the other side of a fence and I stayed quiet hoping they’d come over, and only tried calling again once they started to leave. I’ll try calling more aggressively next time. Thanks again

Im a young hunter at the age of 23. Been turkey huntin since about 6 years old. The biggest turkey i killed had 36 inches of beard (4 beards) and NO spurs. He just had knubs.
Didnt have him mounted bc i didnt realize at the time what i just killed. Still regret it to this day. I hunt down in south Louisiana.

I’ve never killed a turkey and I’m 65 now. Just started cause I hear it’s fun. Problem I have is I get a turkey 50 to 60 yds and that’s as close as he will come. Can’t see him but he’s gobbling. I guess I’m over calling or can’t call at all. Ha . Maybe one day
