- A wet, miserable day at Carlisle - but three charter trains to brighten the gloom.
Oliver Bullied's West Country Pacific, 34046 - Braunton, arrived with The Lakelander from Shrewsbury and Chester, returning by the spectacular (if you could see it through the rain) Cumbrian Coast line.
The daily Staycation Express from Skipton arrived and, finally, the Midland Pullman (yes, we all know it's really an IC 125!) turned up after an 8-hour marathon from London St Pancras via the East Midlands and the Settle & Carlisle.
Let's hope the weather in the Border City wasn't too off-putting for all those visitors from the south.
Well you were certainly spoiled today Tim! 2 LSL HSTs , Braunton (1 of the finest UK locos ) and other interesting diesels too. Excellent work on the video. Hopefully I’ll get up to the S&C next week to spot the green 125. Take care and all the best, Darren 😀
Thanks Darren - apart from the weather, it was a great day.
Nicely presented Tim. I stumbled across this after viewing a clip from my own part of the world (Australia). I visited Carlisle three years ago and can relate to the station. Apart from the lovely Summer weather (rain), this was a great day for railfanning with Braunton, the Staycation HST and the Blue Pullman HST all appearing. The only downside (and I know from experience this happens a lot) was the appearance of the thoughtless gits that put themselves between your camera and the subject, particularly at 0.31min.,2.30min and 9.34min. I have little patience with these prats and have been known to give them a serve in my most colourful Aussie manner. You, obviously, have the patience of Job the prophet. Thanks for posting and I look forward to viewing more of your offerings.
Thanks Michael - good to hear from you. I'm afraid that on a busy railway station many people are competing for space and, ultimately, the railway exists for travellers, not for enthusiasts. Blatant obstruction is really quite rare - most people who get in the way are totally unaware of what they're doing and the worst cases are best just edited out.
Best wishes to you.
A great days filming Tim, plenty of action and some great liveries, West Country class 34046 looking good, cheers .
Yes, usually plenty to see at Carlisle. Thanks Stephen.
Well you must admit that you don't often get the place vibrating like you had, when standing in a field! Good stuff, Tim.
Not in the middle of a field, agreed - but I have experienced quite alarming vibration when filming trackside at locations like the Cumwhinton foot-crossings. Almost earthquake-like at times!
Yes, trackside, so have I. Another reason for abandoning the tripod! The body is a good damper!!
Unfortunately, in my old age my hands are just too shaky for hand-held video.
Enjoyed the video, it's still got a bit of the old world feel about it there, dirt and oil between the rails, plenty of weeds about, background of old buildings, love it
Hmmm - not sure that I approve of the weeds - otherwise I'm with you. Glad you enjoyed it - best wishes.
Excellent vlog, Tim.
Thanks Mike - glad you enjoyed it. Best wishes.
Thanks for the video, great to see the Blue Pullman passed to run with no yellow ends!
Yes indeed - I often think the infamous "Elf 'n Safety" has done as much harm as good. Nice to see common sense prevailing occasionally.
Excellent footage Tim, Braunton looking good coming into Carlisle and leaving. Always nice to see the Pullman. Thanks.👍
You're welcome David - Braunton looking magnificent, as always. Best wishes.
Hi,it brings back memories of my time on the footplate 8yrs on steam 50yrs on the footplate Regards Phil.
Always glad to bring back some memories Philip - best wishes to you.
Plenty charter and other train activity there Tim and all very well videoed. Very enjoyable viewing. Regards, Jeff.
Thanks Jeff - it was a good day despite the dreadful weather.
Good video and nice to see someone else’s video who was there to (I was on other side) I Have subscribed
Thanks for the comment - welcome aboard! I have subscribed to your channel too. Best wishes.
Thank you for the lovely serving of Braunton. If the Staycation Express were steam hauled, I would not be getting much else done besides chasing it and editing video every day!
That might well be two of us!
A good bit of variety there Tim - an explosion of different liveries. I was passing through Carlisle at around 1 pm and you could hear the roar of the rain on the canopy glass above.
It was fairly dramatic, wasn't it? Best wishes - Tim
Nice selection of steam and modern + classic HSTs on a soggy day you did well on a nice classic station with plenty going on very entertaining Tim thanks Did i spot Northumberland snapper in your final shots on the steam departure we have met a few times not met you as yet eventually I will I suppose.Cheers Tim Brian
Thanks Brian - Carlisle is usually a promising location. As for Northumberland Snapper, I don't think I know the gentleman so can't say whether he's in-shot. Look forward to meeting you one of these days - best wishes - Tim
Great filming Tim, its a shame they don't weed the vegetation on the track beds, it looks so untidy. They are on about spending millions on "another" upgrade but do not look after what they have already.
High time for a visit by the weed-killing train.
Nice bit of variety.A good day out!
Carlisle usually provides variety - just a pity that we've lost the heavy coal traffic of a decade ago.
Did that West Country really haul 11 + a dead 47 over Shap unaided on a wet day, or did the diesel give it a "little shove"?
'Fraid I can't answer that one as I wasn't at Shap - some of the other regulars will have posted videos which might tell you what you want to know.
@@schoolshorts That's OK Tim, it was a bit of a retorical question anyway.
Obviously’vBrief Encounters’!.
Lovely video, thanks. Whereabouts do they turn the steam headed train round for the return journey?
There's a complex network of lines immediately south of Carlisle station giving access to the West Coast Main Line, the Tyne Valley line, the Settle & Carlisle and the Cumbrian Coast routes, as well as Upperby depot. This creates two different triangles, either of which can be used to reverse a loco-hauled train. This is just one of the reasons why Carlisle receives more steam trains than anywhere else in Britain - a Mecca for enthusiasts. Best wishes - Tim
@@schoolshorts Thanks for that, I will look at it on Google maps.
@@schoolshorts Still a tricky job, reversing a steam loco with up to 13 carriages behind! I was on the Pendle Dalesman on 10 August, with 'Sierra Leone' (Galatea) and no diesel on the back.
