You've the patience of a saint, Tim. I was aware it would have been a good day to see steam at Carlisle but knew of the service disruptions north of the border. I live in Dunblane and decided not to make the trip but figured you'd be there! Thank you for this video.
Wow what an eventful day wish I could have been there as I would have loved to have seen Sir Nigel but unfortunately inflicted a back injury last weekend so confined to you tube. Seeing the crowds and the long wait, well maybe not. So your wonderful video was a great arm chair alternative many thanks again for your efforts and hopefully Sir Nigel will return later in the year and I can be there JohnK.
Thanks Phil. I've just returned from another day at Carlisle and I'm afraid the level of cancellations is becoming unbelievable. I've already had to cancel a booked day away to Sunderland this week because ScotRail's cancellations of late trains meant that I couldn't get home.
Well there’s one thing I’ll say Tim, you certainly like a challenge and from the start with the bus you got one then the crowds but you keep your cool when others probably wouldn’t, unlucky for Sir Nigel’s arrival but at least you knew where to stand once that stock had passed, excellent as always, cheers 👍
Keep my cool? It's a good job the camera didn't pick up some of my mutterings - which had to be kept very low key as I had an 11-year-old companion with me for much of the day. Best wishes.
What a day it turned out to be. Very well captured amongst the crowds again Tim. Whilst you were frustrated at missing Sir Nigel arrive I was frustrated at them backing out the 86 at the same time as she arrived hiding my view and mostly sound of that. After that I set off on my long walk and waited and waited in the end giving up on seeing Scots Guardsman pass I got back to the station to find she was still there with the AWS fault. The bonus of seeing both locos together was a treat, sometimes bad things turn out good. On the way home we overtook Scots Guardsman in Hellifield loop and were able to make up the time we lost.
@@schoolshorts I am sure it was yes Not going to see this again, she will be in blue soon and the chance of two steam loco's side by side again quite rare
// Great footage Tim as always & lovely to see you again. I’ve been informed 46115 was doing 80mph up Shap Bank! That’s more than a “little push” from 86 259!!! 😬😂
Great video as always, Tim, I was onboard 4498's trip and i can tell you she performed excellently, Brillant day!!, despite waking up at 04:25 in the morning 😂
- - onboard - - lucky you! Waking at 04.25 - next week there's a special (not steam) arriving at Carlisle at 06.56 - I'm going to have to be up at 03.30 to get there to film it, assuming it actually runs. (Three steam specials have fallen victim to the strikes this week). To add to the fun, it doesn't return until 22.36 - this is going to be a seriously long day as I then have an hour's drive home. What we do for our art, eh? Best wishes.
Carlisle was very busy yesterday! Excellent record as ever. After both trains had headed to Upperby I was off to a favourite spot near Cotehill on the S&C planning to get Guardsman and have a leisurely drive to Eden Valley loop. Myself and several others gave up before Guardsman passed otherwise Gresley wouldn't be seen. Now we know what the delay was - had expected a diesel from Carnforth!
There must have been a lot of frustrated observers along the route with no means of knowing what was going on - I had a similar experience at Wetheral a year or two ago when Flying Scotsman suffered an AWS failure - very disappointing.
Ah finally, gresleys baths tubs back on the mainline after a long time, and OMG BEST STEAM ENGINE ENTRYVOF THE CENTURY THOMAS THEME HEARD, OMG VAUGHT IN 4K, but in all seriousness or as serious as I can be, hearing the thomas theme play while Scots Guardman entering the station was cool, also again your content is amazing keep ip the great work
Thanks w - you've educated me - I'd no idea what that music was - I'm rather old for Thomas, I'm afraid, and my hearing isn't too good these days! But now I know. Best wishes to you.
My initial reaction to the sight of her in wartime black was sheer horror - but the more I look, the more accustomed I've become - I've learned to live with it! Never mind - she'll soon be repainted into a more becoming livery. As for people blocking the view - it goes with the territory when filming on a busy station. Best wishes.
@@schoolshorts My thoughts exactly. ‘A Brief Encounter’ ( though not at Carnforth on this occasion). My father often took the Portsmouth to Scapa Flow train in the war when such liveries were de rigger, frequently halting for air raids. Best Wishes to you and yours.
Thanks Stephen. Hobbies are like jobs - they all have their downsides. Carlisle station can be desperately crowded on special occasions but at least there's plenty going on and usually adequate time to obtain a variety of material. Lineside filming is much more demanding - and less forgiving. My local line (the old GSWR) is dead as the dodo these days - a light 66 or 70 is something to get excited about! - and I really can't afford the petrol these days to go doing trips to Appleby (200 mile round trip) or beyond so - Carlisle Citadel - here we come! Best wishes.
- - - and thank you Stuart. Filming from the platform has its drawbacks but at least you get close to the subject, which is often stationary. When filming by the trackside you get one chance - usually very brief - and if anything goes wrong - well, tough! Best wishes.
See, nothing wrong with the steamer again. That's very often the way, that it's the electrical add-on gadgets that are at fault. Still, has there ever been an electric loco banking steam over Shap before? 🤷♂️
Aah - the curse of modern safety requirements. There were four personnel on the footplate - well, they couldn't possibly be expected to look out for signals, could they?

Great video Tim, from such an eventful day. Congratulations for sticking with your plans to get there and see them. 👍

@@schoolshorts oh dear. Not looking good for train travel in the near future.
Superb video from Carlisle Tim and great to see Sir Nigel Gresley back. Cheers, Jeff.
Thanks Jeff. As you say, great to see Sir Nigel back - though I'll be happier when she's repainted in a somewhat more flattering livery!
Great footage as ever Tim. Great to see Gresley back up north. Shame about Guardsman. A long day for u, bet u were glad to get home.👍👍
Thanks David - I was indeed! The things we do for our art, eh?

Thanks for taking the trouble, Tim, the resulting very interesting video making it well worthwhile, Murphy s law not withstanding!
Good old Murphy - gets in everywhere!
Great video Tim! I was there too. Was an amazing sight!
Thanks Spike. A great day - despite the problems..
The music when Scots Guardsman absolutely cracked me up 😂😂😂😂

My word, it was crowded! Well at least you got both - I only managed SG plus banker (but that was ELECTRIC!)
A day of new experiences!

Very strange to see in wartime black. Very distinctive chime. Thank you for your video and commiserations for the people ignoring your filming spot.

Spellcheck! I wrote de rigeur!.
If it's supposed to be wartime black shouldn't it just be N E on the tender, not LNER?
46115 is a beautiful loco.
They both are - though Sir Nigel would look better in a peacetime livery.
Interesting video! I was also there!
Which train were you on?

Love the comments it’s almost like your there
I thought I heard a different train when I got back home (in Penrith) from doing my shopping. Must have been one of these two passing through.
Both trains passed through Penrith and must have made a marvellous sight racing through the station at high speed.

Ummm why is the Thomas the Tank Engine theme playing on the speakers…
Cracking shot at 13:26 , nice one.
Thanks Mark - glad you like it. Best wishes.
It's almost like steamies are making a comeback.
They were indeed six or seven months ago - nothing expected at Carlisle for quite some time to come now, I'm afraid.
