    During the battle for the Atlantic, merchant mariners had a saying. When on a cargo vessel, sleep above the sheets with clothes and boots on. When in an oil tanker put on your pajamas and sleep under the covers.

    17:22 T2 tanker, 159m, 9.1m draft.
    Aimed at the bow end of the central super structure, hits about 1/3rd hull length sternward of the aiming point. AoB ~90°, range 2000m, torpedo speed 44 kts, enemy estimated speed 6 kts.
    What was the real speed of the T2?
    44 kts = 22.636 m/s
    2000 m / 22.636 m/s = 88.355 s
    53 m / 88.355 s = 0.6 m/s = 1.17 kts
    The tanker was doing *7.2 knots.*
    And you could have set the depth to 6 or 8 meters with no problem - deeper holes press in water more strongly and deeper explosions are better tamped by the water pressure - not that it really matters, seeing that the tanker became a no-resurface sub.

    Its more interesting if you have no idea where/who the other U-boat is and suddenly all the escorts go tearing off in a random direction, sometimes that gives quite an opportunity as well.

      @laurenz4572 10 дней назад

      There is a lot more stuff cramped into Uboats than modeled in the game. Its extremely bare bones in game, proportions arent acurate aswell. IRL Uboats of all types, wether 2, 7, 9 or 21 had to make very efficient use of any and all available space. Engenieering, cables, gauges, baterries, piping, crew bunks, torpedoes, deck ammo, kitchen, steering, diving equipment, maps, radio, hydrophone and tons of things more took up space. Not to forget that any spare space would be stuffed to the brink with food. You can get a good feeling with a quick google image search for ww2 Uboat engine room.

    • @RonJeremy514
      @RonJeremy514 10 дней назад +1

      It's definitely more spacious than the real uboats. It's a design choice since you can walk in the boat in this game and don't want to get stuck with the AI everywhere and the AI pathing would conflict, which it used to in the command room pretty easily.

    To be honest, if you hadn't been able to escape from the sand bar that probably would have been a pretty good end of the war for the men onboard. The boat would have been lost, but they were close to the coast and the weather wasn't that bad. So everyone could easily have evacuated by dingy to the shore. The republic of Ireland was neutral in ww2, so the crew would have been safe there, if not allowed to return home until after the war ended.

      They were openly friendly towards Germany during ww2, just didn't want to openly oppose the UK.
      Their envoy in Berlin even went so far as to send formal condolences to the German state (such as it was) in 1945 in the last days before their surrender, on the death of their learder... Pretty much the only person to do so.

    9:35 - The picture of the tanker in the Ship ID manual is that of a JAPANESE Type 1TM tanker...they're using a nation that's not even in the game! 😂😂😂
    13:42 - That's why I rarely attack convoys in SH3, especially if there's other U-boats about. They attack and cause the merchants to zigzag, spoiling my aim. Most of the time I can find better targets traveling alone, anyways. Ironically, the only time I ever sighted RMS Queen Mary in SH3 was in the middle of a convoy that was going at 7 KNOTS! No way she would've been part of a convoy like that!

    Are you going to do a full series on this game at some point a-la SH3 style? Maybe a few 100% realism runs from the start of the war until death/end?

    Considering how complex and involved it is to fire a torpedo... I wonder how much higher the average intelligence of good Uboat crews was compared to the general population. Doing complex calculations while under extreme pressure... I struggle with easy calculations while under minimal pressure :D

    I’ve heard the “it doesn’t matter much what the range is when firing at 90 degrees” thing before but I do not understand it. I would think a longer range would mean more torpedo travel time would mean that the target would have traveled farther and so the torpedo would need to pull more lead.
    Is it just that at relatively short ranges the torpedo is fast enough that the difference is small?

    Any hull wouldn't take the situation well! And with the working with other U-Boats ! There's a bigger risk of doing so! Other captains will decide to attack! Independent of other factors! Mind you. He did end up deep sixing 24:12
